Shinya Aoki vs. Yuji Nagata

[8.0] "Sometimes two tough fighters who just fight until time runs out is what I need. I do not know how, but Shinya Aoki has become incredibly good, and this is probably Nagata's best match of the year. In such a match, Aoki and Nagata tried to hide Yuji's shortcomings, which were revealed due to his age, but Nagata is still able to compete on the ground floor and it was surprisingly very interesting to watch how the "younger" Shinya tested the veteran for strength and forced him to give his best on the mat. There are a lot of good connections and consistent tactical actions, I really love watching the modern work of Aoki, who always strives not to play tap-tap-tap, but to hold a pin competition. The match probably took longer than necessary, but I didn't notice how that time flew by because they did a very good job on it, even though it was clear halfway through that we wouldn't see the outcome here, but only hard shots."

[7.0] "Gutsy stuff from two veterans of very different genres, with Aoki being a young gun in this particular equation. He tortures Nagata on the mat for much of this match, eventually losing control for a more back and forth second half. Admittedly, the match has a less defined shape with Nagata in control, equally suffering from the incredibly ambitious runtime. It does give the match an undeniable heart in the process though, this dynamic just isn't armed with a great deal of variety. It's a compelling one nonetheless, a very charming styles clash that's happy to embrace its contrast. ***1/2"

[8.0] "Every now and then, I forget just how great of a professional wrestler Yuji Nagata remains, until I see a match like this. A well paced clash leading to a time limit draw. Excellent grappling and strikes in this one."

[7.0] "Seeing these two match up was a delight, but the match went a little long. It felt like they were pacing themselves in the beginning and the ending was somewhat anticlimactic."
