[10.0] "I remember watching this at the time and just being blown away. I hadn't rewatched it until now, and it still amazes me. I think it's Ospreay's best match. The way this thing builds it earns the craziness that is the last 5 minutes. Takagi is tremendous. Funny watching this now and thinking of these guys as junior heavyweights. These two have unbelievable chemistry. They've had plenty of matches since, all very good. However, there's nothing that can top this one. 5 stars."

[10.0] "I have no words bro, I loved the shit outta this match. It was a fast pacing non-stop action for 33 fantastic minutes. Takagi and Ospreay destroyed each other in order to win the Super Juniors tournament. The strikes, sequences, exchanges, kick-outs, maneuvers, and moments were just unbelievable. The fact this was their first singles match and they had an absolute all-timer, says all you need to know. I had no idea who was gonna win here. Shingo almost send himself over the freaking steel barricade after launching himself over the ropes onto Ospreay, the way he landed was nasty and I'm very surprised that Takagi was alright."

Shingo was incredible, the match had an alright pace, just a bit of finisher spam at the end. Some gnarly bumps too."

I think Shingos years in DG really helped this match as he's very adept at buying Osprey time while setting up spots and making them look believable - Like lunging to grab wills leg before the oscutter. As you'd expect from both men involved the execution is flawless, the crowd are great here. The production also deserves praise"

[9.0] "One of the best final matches of the super juniors tournament in history. Shingo & Ospreay have incredible chemistry and it was on full display here. This had everything, hard hitting, some violent strikes, nice highflying and good technical wrestling and most of all stakes. Shingo walked in 96-0 trying to keep his undefeated streak alive and Ospreay was trying to take it and the trophy. (4.75*)"

[6.0] "On paper, we've got a simple enough story here. Shingo overwhelms early with his power, and Ospreay uses his athleticism and explosive offence to power through, and it's at least got the crowd hooked, but the match loses me with how little Ospreay actually sells it. Shingo dishes out some devastating-looking punishment, only for the worst aspect of Ospreay to shine through because he rebounds almost immediately like he's got a rocket up his arse. Ironically, Shingo ends up providing the most emotional gravity here, especially when he's forced to rally from behind, which is ironic because he's meant to be the final boss here. Even then, I get why people like this match, but it just doesn't hook me like it does with others. **3/4"

[7.0] "There's a certain 'Seinfeld Is Unfunny' effect going on here where this match that put Will Ospreay on the map, is just so very standard and ordinary for him these days. He's had this exact match like fifty times in the years since this match first happened. It's basically just an ordinary Will Ospreay match, with all the good and bad that entails. Very much a match without much in the way of psychology or anything to think about, and is just guys doing moves really fast. Great athletic display, not a super good match. However, the other half of the this match, Shingo Takagi, helps make it special, by being stiff as fuck and also doing his best to kill himself with a fucking INSANE dive to the outside. The extremely hot crowd for the entire 30+ minute duration also helps a lot. It's a match that really isn't anything special, but I'm also capable of appreciating a good stunt show. It's a fun one."

[2.0] "I like Takagi and I like (to an extent) Ospreay. But these two bring out the absolute worst of each other. This whole match felt like it was made for people who make Invincible phonk edits. These two just went a million miles an hour with no time to breathe in some segments, and in others there was no attempt to make anything look polished or refined. There are some instances where this fast paced "epic" Ospreay match can work for me, but this is not one of those times."

[5.0] "Usually, I do not mind Ospreay's antics and even find myself liking them a lot. This however, was not one of those times. Shingo up to this point has been (rightfully) built up as a monster that no one can last against. Someone who will easily swing momentum in his favor and seemingly does not get tired or take damage. So how do they continue that bit against Ospreay? Well having Ospreay no-sell 75% of Shingo's offense, of course. Ospreay's no-sells this match are absolutely egregious, and completely sucked me out of the match. It's not even like a fighting spirit kinda no-sell either, he just kips up constantly and hits Shingo with a hook kick. The finisher spam towards the end as well didn't move me, because I understand that in kayfabe, it's taking all of those finishers to take Shingo down. But dude, you just shrugged off most his offense and made him look like a fool for most of the match, NOW you want to treat him like a massive threat? It's not a bad match by any means, both these guys work their asses off and take some nasty bumps. Shingo's outside dive was particularly nasty as well. But the pure Ospreay-ism in this match drained my interest as time went on. I can definitely see why people love this match and rate it highly, but for me personally, it just never clicks."

[8.0] "The Shingo Takagi vs. Will Ospreay BOSJ 26 Final is an amazing, relentless display of athleticism, deserving of its high 4-star rating, but it falls short of Instant Classic territory due to its structural flaws. While the pace and technical execution were generally flawless, allowing Ospreay to showcase his incredible counter-ability throughout the 30-minute sprint, the match suffered from the visible safety gaps on critical spots and, more importantly, a lack of sustained control from Shingo. The undefeated "Dragon" felt less like an equal monster and more like an elevated engine for Ospreay's offense, failing to establish the kind of dominating control expected of a desperate tournament final."

[10.0] "Has to be my favorite match of Will Ospreay's career. One of the more unique aspects of this match that improves it quite a bit, is the amount muscle that both men are in the process of adding. This enables them to construct a match that's a hybrid of hard-hitting strong style and the high flying both were famous for in the past. But this is far from the only excellent characteristic of this contest. The execution is fantastic. The moves look clean and hard hitting and the sequences are so much fun to watch. The story is pretty straightforward going in. Ospreay may be the younger star, but he has more experience in New Japan and more specifically the BOSJ. Shingo, however, has utterly destroyed the competition and has gone undefeated up to this point. I had no idea who would win when I first watched, but I thought the finish was good and left both wrestlers looking strong. This is a top 5 match for me."

Personally I enjoy the 90s more but I respect this match and appreciate it for what it is. Some insane kick outs and just insane how this match flows very effortlessly. (****3/4)"

[10.0] "Shingo Takagi's 2019 is among my favorite individual years of a pro wrestler in history. Will Ospreay in 2019 is a unicorn; unhinged athleticism and speed and absolutely no thought of slowing down. This is one of the greatest matches of all time. The heights NJPW could reach in this era are unmatched. An electric Ryogoku crowd and Ospreay bringing a sword to the ring to be the first in NJPW to slay the Dragon. Epic. This match is a thousand miles an hour. Shingo's power, speed and explosiveness crashes head on with Ospreay's unmatched athleticism and refusal to quit. The strike exchanges; Ospreay's kicks and Shingo throwing bombs for clotheslines. The transitions, the counters, it's all poetry. My favorite match of 2019 and the match that made me a lifelong fan of both of these guys."

We are used to his style and his moves, but when you really think about it, the match he performed on this one is absolutely unreal. He is a sicko for executing that much insane moves at that pace. That's why the ratings are so high on this one. Shingo was great but on this match, Ospreay was that good that Shingo looked inferior at every stage. It was awesome, I can understand some people got overwhelmed by that density and that kind of spotfest for 33 minutes, but for everyone else, it's one of the best wrestling match ever."

[6.0] "Huge spotfest that went on at least 10 minutes too long. Pretty much falls victim to everything that annoys me about modern wrestling booking. This is my first time seeing Takagi in action and while I can tell he is talented in the ring I was fatigued by how much punishment but Ospreay and Takagi had to take before this match ended. Once again the Oscutter on the apron always looks forced to me (although this time Takagi was in better position so he didn't have to step forward AS much). He also took that Sasuke Special from Ospreay although a moment ago he tried to pull his legs out before Ospreay could do it? Very confusing. Too many obviously pre-planned sequences coupled with everything else once again took me out of this match when in reality if you had cut out the redundancies this could have been something special. 3 stars max."
FakeNoobe wrote on 04.06.2025:
[10.0] "This match is crazy. The buildup to the spotfest was perfect. I believed that after all that desperation in the beginning where they kicked out created this drama. It lead to the spotfest and insane reversals. My goodness those reversals where crazy. How did they manage to do those reversals is beyond me. When Shingo did that dive and landed his foot on the guard rail, I marked out. That's crazy. How is that even possible. Like how is it that he was hanging with one foot on the guard rail. You would think logically that the guard rail would not support his weight but I guess wrong. Also those flips that Ospreay does is out of this world. Like seriously it was a spectacle to watch. Also that selling of the ax bomber is 10/10 masterclass stuff their. I am not shocked why they made Ospreay a main guy in New Japan for awhile until he left with AEW. Overall easily one of the best matches I have ever seen 6 stars out of 5."

A flawless masterpiece of pure wrestling artistry--pristine, polished, like a diamond carved from chaos. The chemistry between Will Ospreay's boundless, otherworldly creativity and Shingo Takagi's primal, relentless intensity was nothing short of alchemy. The way they survived murderous move after move--only to kick out at two, defying physics and logic...... that's why we're addicted to this sport."

The crowd was into it from the beginning, the story of Ospreay trying to take down the overwhelming Shingo who was yet to take a pin in 97... yes 97 straight matches was great. The sequences were incredible, the high spots were insane. An absolute magnum opus of a match. This was also the first match I saw of both men and I instantly became a fan of both, especially Shingo. [10.0] "Honestly, it's kind of easy to come here and praise both wrestlers and performers, but this will not be enough to express myself, and also, it will not be original. I am, in the matter of fact, original, I like to be original and to express that what I write here, is literally what I think, don't matter the mistakes, the wrong way to think, the bad way to talk, this is my original form. These two wrestlers are also very original. No matter how long "Little Ospreays" start being made around the world, there's no one like him. He's Billy the GOAT himself, one of the best wrestlers of all time and probably the more special and talented one, in fact, it's hard to find someone that's strong, quick, fast, athletic, hit hard, thinks well, has strong sportsmanship and also is a fantastic storyteller. This is literally an aspect of Ospreay. Now...let me see what I can say about the Dragon...fantastic wrestler with unique abilities, he don't have a good physique, but this don't stop him from being so quick and fast in the ring, making everything he do look so devastating. Shingo Takagi really looks like a villain coming from a book or something related, he's the example of a high level in the pro wrestling, the only one in the history to hold the world championships from both DragonGate and NJPW. And I already saw someone calling him "RANDOM" lmao. Until this match, he hasn't been pinned, so it was put in a overcondition just to make Ospreay end up stronger in the end of this tournament. And it works. Other side, Shingo didn't end up weak, because Ospreay needed to execute literally his three finishers (Hidden Blade, Oscutter and Stormbreaker) to finish him, without even stopping to pinfal, no, not before executing this three moves in sequence. And you watch this and think, "Oh well, I can understand why". Why? Cause Shingo is a freaking beast, and that was the only way to beat and stop him. If he exists, thank God for this match, cause this was incredible, Takagi and Ospreay are both special with such a unique chemistry, this is a FUCKING five stars match for me, and it's really hard to beat that fact. And this is for sure one of the best matches of all time, just like it's in the cagematch"

[9.0] "[4.5*] The pacing is extremely fast, the moves are thrown one after another non-stop and things like selling are really not a major focus there. These things would have bothered me in a Heavyweight Main Event, not gonna lie, but as a Junior match, as everything that they always say that the Jr. division represents, this was hands-down perfect. The moves, the speed, the chemistry, the spots, the nearfalls, the drama, the atmosphere everything this division cares about was done to perfection on this match. This is the best Jr. match I have ever seen, surpassing Hiromu vs Ishimori. This is funny because if both matches were Heavyweight ones, the bomb-fest with storytelling from the 2018 Final would have been better, but as a BOSJ Final, man, this is almost unmatchable. What. A. Match. For real. Heel Shingo ruled tho, this shit was thrilling from start to finish. Ran right into my veins."

They did some of the best sequences I've ever seen in a wrestling match. They wrestled at such a high pace. The spots they did were awesome. Ospreay countering the running closeline into a nasty liger bomb was spectacular. Shingo hit some HEAVY strikes on Ospreay. There was a lot of near falls. There was like 3 different times i jumped out of my seat because of how unbelievably good this match was. They were phenomenal in this match."

Ospreay's selling is really strange in a bad way. He tries to sell but fails at it because he misses the point of selling entirely. He manages to hit these incredible moves and then stumbles to the ground and it just really doesn't work for me. Other than that, this match felt overally long and the kickouts especially near the end got to be too much for me."

[9.0] "Where to begin? The incredible opening sequence at the beginning of the match? The striking exchanges? Maybe the nearfalls? How about the red-hot crowd? The story? This match literally has it all. It all starts with the tournament and months of build before this match. Both men are having incredible years, Ospreay is clearly being built as the ace of the junior division, while Takagi, a newcomer to New Japan, is aiming higher than that. Coming in, Takagi is undefeated in New Japan competition, never being pinned nor submitted. Hes 9-0 in a loaded BOSJ tournament, and Ospreay stands as the last, but also the best chance for someone to finally slay the dragon. So the match begins, and throughout they follow the dynamic of this ariel master and powerhouse, with both men playing their parts excellently. There are so many amazing spots throughout the match, there is no point in even listing them. The crowd is into the match every step of the way, and both men throw everything at each other, it's fluent, fast, and hard-hitting, and even though Opsreay slays the dragon, both men are winners, because this is one of the most important matches in modern New Japan. But it's also one of the most destructive. This match is good not because it's a shining beacon of ring psychology or structure. This is a tightly choreographed dance of danger with some emotional depth. It's oft-imitated by New Japan to this very day, and while it didn't start here, lots of NJPW's bad main events are trying to imitate stuff exactly like this. I love this match, don't get me wrong. But I never want to see it again, unless it's EXACTLY this. 4.75 Stars."

[10.0] "This was as big time as a New Japan juniors match felt since Liger was on top two decades previously. Shingo came into New Japan as juniors killer and Ospreay wants to be the one to slay the beast. Shingo was wonderful here as a monster heel and Ospreay can sell his ass off when he doesn't overdo it. This was as violent as it was flashy. Shingo spending the opening parts of this match rather stoic made his incredible plancha pop that little extra. Even with all the flash, they never lose focus that this is about an underdog babyface taking on an undefeated monster. I was wary going into this as I'm aware of this match's reputation and I didn't want to be disappointed. This lived up to the hype. This was utterly engrossing and I was gripped on every nearfall. This never went into overkill territory and the match kept building until that incredible three finisher flurry from Ospreay. Even the most hardened modern NJPW critics will have to admit that this kicks all kinds of ass!"

[10.0] "Since 8th October 2018, Shingo Takagi has been the bane of the existence of the Junior division. For the near 8 months since joining New Japan, Shingo has been unpinned and unsubmitted. He went 9-0 in his block matches even being the current Junior champion. At this point, he has been built up as the ultimate monster heel of the Junior division. Standing across from him is Will Ospreay, who kind of serves as the interim Ace of the junior division. With a NEVER Openwieght title reign already under his belt Ospreay was already heading towards the heavyweights. However with the former Junior Ace Kushida having left the company in January and his replacement Hiromu Takahashi out with injury, Ospreay was the best option to give a believable challenge for Shingo in the finals. With the crowd on the side of the JIL member Shingo, Ospreay quickly establishes that he will no go down like everyone else. He immediately pops back up after shoulder tackle, he wont be intimidated. Ospreay clearly gets the best of the initial counter sequence. So Shingo actually refuses to give a clean break and tries a cheat shot on Ospreay with a loud chop, only for Ospreay to response with a loud chop of his own. The match is practically advertised as a battle of Ospreays speed vs. Shingos strength but the Aerial Assassin is perfectly willing to get into slugfest if needs be. Frustrated, when Ospreay fakes Shingo out with a tease dive, Shingo unsportsmanlike throws a bottle of water into the ring, and the crowd actually switches sides and cheers for the UK native. However Shingo is adaptable and actually busts out a tope con hilo to finally take over. Although I want to point out, that Shingo overshoots and seemingly hurts himself on the move, showing that while Ospreay can match Shingo in striking, Shingo cant match Ospreay in high flying. Shingos control segement doesnt last long, as each time Shingo manages to take over, Ospreay pulls out one of his high flying tricks to get back in as the match is a back and forth fast pace epic with the momentum constantly swinging. In tournament finals that takes place in the grand Sumo Hall, these two gives an epic appropriate for both the division and the venue. Ulitmately Ospreay has to throw the kitchen sink at Shingo, hitting three(! ) finishers in a row: Hidden Blade, Os cutter and Strombreaker to finally get the pin. The Aerial Assassin has slayed the The Dragon. *****"

[10.0] "This was downright spectacular. This is very close to a masterpiece of professional wrestling. First of all, the storytelling is brilliant. Both guys were having an amazing year and they came in with tons of momentum behind them. Shingo was built up as one of the most imposing threats New Japan has ever seen. Ospreay came in as the Ace of his division, and wanted to prove that he could stay at the top by slaying the undefeated dragon. The atmosphere was incredible. There was a big match feel and the audience was in for the ride. This followed the powerhouse/high-flyer dynamic, and it was executed masterfully. For 33 minutes they kept an insane pace and had me hooked all the way through. Shingo started out hesitant, and resorted to dirty tactics to gain the upper hand. As the match went on he became more of a daredevil, performing moves I have never seen him do. Such as his tope con giro. Ospreay's bumping was absolutely incredible and sold most of Shingo's offense like death. I thought Ospreay's long term selling left something to be desired, he's no Omega or Okada in that regard but that wasn't a big issue. His wrestling was astounding. There was so much creativity and crispness behind the sequences and spots. From Ospreay's insanely well timed kicks, Shingo's sell of the mid-air stunner, the wheelbarrow suplex and the apron Oscutter, the Made in Japan nearfall, and so many others. Shingo's lariats looked like they could behead Ospreay and the powerbomb counter to one of them is one of the best counters I've ever seen. The finishing stretch was insane overkill in the best way possible. Ospreay used his tremendous endurance to nail Shingo with one huge move after another to finally put him away. After the match was over, there was so much emotion in Sumo Hall you could feel it. Possibly their best match with each other out of their series of 4 (Their Dontaku match might top it) and one of the greatest matches ever. *****"

Going into this match, there was a lot of hype surrounding it and these two not only managed to deliver it but also surpassed it. The atmosphere here was surreal and comparable to the main event of a Tokyo Dome match. The action was outstanding, everything they did was picture perfect, the back and forth sequences were spectacular, the pacing was excellent, the drama - red hot and the crowd red hot every single part of the match. This was their first meeting ever, thankfully, the chemistry between them was electrifying and they brought out the best from each other. Both men went deep in their arsenal, bringing out everything they had and absolutely destroyed each other for the honor of being the best Jr. wrestler on the planet. It is the breaking point where Ospreay mutated from a talented high-flyer who could work wonders, into the selfish worker that actively detracts from so many of his opponents. I believe Shingo needed the win far more, and Ospreay's victory would end up being a mistake as the Junior Heavyweight reign was a disappointment, and their never-ending feud together has consistently delivered disappointing performances in my eyes. I enjoy this to a certain extent, but I don't feel like both men bring out the best in each other."

Absolutely incredible work, Shingo was such a beast, running through his block, making it feel like such an even bigger achievement."

Also some tremendous high flying skills demonstrated by Will Ospreay. I think this would have been the perfect match if it weren't for some minor mistakes, as well as if the counter sequences truly felt like they were going to connect."

Ospreay looking to overcome his loss to Kushida in the Finals (2017) and Shingo, who was on a record breaking tear, looking to go undefeated in his first ever BOSJ. I remember this match till this day. Absolute classic at the iconic Ryogoku. Once the ref's hand hit the mat for the 3 count I cried. What an absolute roller coaster of emotions that had the crowd at the palm of their hands. Glad this match happened in front of fans before COVID hit."

These guys smacked into each other with a lot of gusto. But ultimately, I can't help but feel the match had some flaws. There's definitely a point where it kind of doesn't matter if you're hitting impressive moves if nobody really sells them, it makes you start to think none of these moves must actually be very damaging. That's doubled by the fact that, like too many NJPW matches, this went on far too long, well over half and hour. It ended up feeling like an overly long exhibition, punctuated by the usual weird faces by Ospreay substituting for any kind of story."

These two speak the same wrestling language-- they are so fluid with every exchange and with how they counter each other and play off of the other's offense. The story coming into this match was an easy one-- Shingo was a new junior heavyweight (using that term lightly, hahaha) who had run through the competition and was undefeated up to this point, while Ospreay seemed poised to become the one to slay the dragon, A fantastic crowd, two men with perfect synergy, and the stakes of a BOSJ trophy on the line make this an all-timer."
