Rey Misterio Jr. vs. Super Calo

[5.0] "Crowd gave nothing to this match and especially this Calo guy. It probably wasn't the smartest idea to give a long heat segment to a guy that no one in the audience knows. Whenever Rey was on offense it was good, Calo on offense was pretty dull."

[7.0] "A fun Rey in 96 match, but maybe a little over long. Calo is all right but looks a little clunky out there. Audience is just not invested in this one for the most part, but Rey does pop them a couple different times. Fun finish."

[9.0] "Loved this match. Had just about everything you expect to see in the Cruiserweight division. Super Calo gets quite a few control spots where he keeps Mysterio grounded, but a lot of his offense looked really impressive and creative. Mysterio just looks at his very best in a PPV setting like this and some of the spots he gets and the way he uses the 2 ring set up for the West Coast Pop looked incredible."

[4.0] "The crowd got a little bit more alive when Rey was taking over, but my God, they did not give two shits about poor Calo. He was doing Missile Dropkicks and Sommersaults to the outside and he was still getting absolutely no reaction from the fans. Way too long, the heat portion killed the audience and it really dragged."

[5.0] "Did I watch a different match to everyone else here? Rey was great and has a couple standout spots but this was pretty damn slow and overlong and spent too long on getting heat on a guy nobody knows and therefore gets no reaction. The finish was sweet, at least. (**1/2)"

[8.0] "In this era in particular, Rey just didn't miss. Having a guy like Super Calo in there that can keep up with him definitely helps, and Rey's in fine form here. Great match."

[8.0] "Misterio's awesome theme song! The initially silent crowd was quickly won over by Misterio's spectacular speed and agility which complemented Calo's style in a very good way. More or less a typical Cruiserweight match in WCW, with good pace, flow and some breathtaking spots. Mike Tenay once again being very informative on commentary."

[6.0] "It's a "prime Mysterio" match with a decent length, so it was definitely never going to be 'bad' by any stretch, though it definitely wasn't one of Mysterio's better matches from 1996 either. Mysterio's various stunts were wonderfully smooth and flashy as usual, while Calo's strikes and power-moves were fine but very generic, though his few high-flying attacks were surprisingly risky and looked quite good. Mysterio sold and bumped well for everything Calo hit him with, especially Calo's bigger and more impactful attacks, making him a good sympathetic and endearing babyface. The main issue was that the match went on too long, resulting in Calo taking up time with his pretty dull control work that bored me -- as well as the crowd -- quite heavily. Mysterio's eventual comeback spots were all impressive, though it felt like they were both just going through the motions on their way to hitting them, with effort only brought out when it was time for the big spots themselves. Keeping this as much more of a sprint, with Calo playing more of an explosive powerhouse to counter Mysterio's immense speed and agility, would have been much better. ***"

[7.0] "A good match that the crowd just simply didn't care about for whatever reason. Lots of innovative offense from both guys, especially for that time period."

[7.0] "I loved this match! Mysterio using the 2 rings to do a double spring board/west coast pop into a hurricinrana pin was a great finish!"

[6.0] "Super Calo was one of the weaker luchadors WCW brought in at this point, and even Rey struggles to make him look good here. There was enough great stuff from Misterio to make it worth watching, but he'd have much better matches."

[2.0] "Look, I'm not anti Cruiserweights, I love Rey Mysterio, but Super Calo sucks, and this match suffered because he's an inadequate wrestler. The blown spots by Calo really makes this suck, but Mysterio tries to do his best with a cool finish."

[6.0] "It was a good match but for some reason calo just does absolutely nothing for me, he dominated the match and rey took alot of big bump. Unfortunately the crowd didnt pump up for this match due to calos dominating it."

[8.0] "This was one of those WCW midcard matches where the lack of crowd reaction was in no way indicative of the quality of the match. At least they popped for the finishing spot, though."

[8.0] "It's a really entertaining match, this has everything one can hope to see in 15 minutes. I'm surprised to see Super Calo dominating most of the match, and Rey Mysterio getting the best spots. Another great match for the cruiserweight division. ****"

[10.0] "This was even better than I expected, some really great stuff here. Calo had an awful look but in terms of what he could do? He actually had a ton of ability. I loved the way he worked over Rey's arm for a good chunk of the match, some very creative offense and solid storytelling. Mysterio was great of course, some fantastic moves. The finishing sequence is seriously jaw dropping."

[4.0] "I gave this match **. Some decent spots but 70% of this match was Super Calo dominating, which went on for far too long and then Rey busts out his standard spots. Definitely an overrated and quite disappointing match"
