[8.0] "Yes, there hasn't been so much things. But god, look at Terry Funk's selling. He was screaming "doctor, help me". This is pure legendary moment."
[9.0] ""My Eye" . Bloody hell, this was a very gross match by the end. Lawler bloodies Funk's eye up badly and Funk's panicked squealing made the finish very uncomfortable and disturbing to watch. Funk desperately calling for the Doctor and Lance Russell (aw) was horrifying but the perfect finish to an incredible match. I never realised just how big the Mid-South Coliseum was until the lights go on and you see a sea of seats. And they made great use of the space, brawling in the crowd seats, using the empty chairs to their advantage. I loved the contrasted tempo of emotions from the two. Funk starts off the match with Lance Russel blowing his lid, itching to face Lawler who came out calm and focused. And the match was the same. The brawling was erratic and aggressive but Lawler was able to calm the storm and use that to win the match. Funk's trash talking was awesome (yet another good use of the empty arena setting). ****1/2"
[8.0] "Seen as the first Empty Arena match and has Funk's fingerprints all over this segment. Completely different from what wrestling fans would have expected back in the early 80's. Lance Russell the announcer bringing in question whether the match will even happen. Funk arrives first in his wrestling tights already cursing Lawler's name, soaking it all in as his voice bounces off the walls in the Mid-South Coliseum. It only gets louder once Lawler comes down to the ring, always finding a way to rip into his opponent before the fighting even starts. Some more words are exchanged until a fight breaks out and moves to ringside. It's nothing pretty but feels far more like a legitimate scuffle that you can't help but get sucked in. Funk constantly mentions how he's going after Lawler's eye, even making a wooden shiv from a 2x4. And in a poetic sense of justice, Lawler winds up kicking the object into Funk's own eye. The lasting image of Funk clutching at his left eye, blood pouring down his face and harrowing wails for help is chilling to witness for the first time in ways wrestling rarely ever is. ****"
[7.0] "Though not the best match these two have had against each other, it's a decent brawl. Some good work out of the ring, Funk's voice going up a few octaves like a madman as the match goes on is genius, and good hardcore stuff toward the end as both men try to stick spikes in each others eyes. Though, as I mentioned earlier, not these two's best meeting, and a little more, I think, could have been done out of the ring, it still holds up strong, even today. A 7."
[4.0] "Not fully sure what I just watched... it's mostly light brawling and not even much of that. I'll admit Funk's nonstop screaming insults at Lawler was very entertaining, and the finish where Funk wimps out from the eye injury was great, but mostly this just seemed bizarre. Not sure what the appeal of an "empty arena" match is anyway. These two have assuredly done better."
