Verpackt in einer über zwei Stunden andauernden TV-Fassung bzw. VHS-Aufzeichnung plus Videopaket zu Beginn und anschließendem Interview mit Schirmherr Antonio Inoki ist der Zusammenschnitt einzigartig anzusehen, ohne überhaupt wertend klingen zu wollen. Das Match selbst ist ungenügend, ist aufgrund seiner Eigenart jedoch faszinierend und ungleich allem anderen der 80er. Inoki, ein Revolutionär."
[2.0] "In the infamous Ganryujima Island Death Match, Antonio Inoki and Masa Saito clash on a remote island, in a shoreside ring with no referee. The concept of the match prefigures both modern-day "location" matches that take place away from traditional arenas, and cinematic matches, with some nice scenery and once night falls, some rather artistic shots with the grappling lit by large ringside torches. Unfortunately, it's also a real slog to get through. Though eventually both men do get bloodied - Saito dramatically so - the vast majority of the action is limited to traditional, slow-paced grappling. Nothing wrong with grappling in theory of course, but when the runtime of the match itself is well over *an hour and a half, * it becomes a chore to watch pretty quickly. Add to that that other than providing a backdrop, the environment of the match never really comes into play; the action mostly takes place in the ring and only occasionally spilling out to the area around it. It's certainly interesting, having walked so our modern Final Deletions and DDT campground matches and Boneyard Matches could run, but the modern viewer will probably get more out of a short highlight reel than sitting through the entire thing."
[0.0] "Maybe the worst match in the history of wrestling, because not only is this dreadfully boring, it's also 103 minutes long. I'm trying to think of all of the wonderful and fulfilling things I could do with those 103 minutes if I could have them back. I could watch a movie I've never seen before, maybe discover new music, perhaps enjoy some sex with my lovely wife, stare at a wall for an hour and a half and ponder the meaning of life, the possibilities are endless and they are all better alternatives than this."
[6.0] "Ich habs mir nun auf YouTube angesehen. Es war natürlich nicht komplett aber man hat sicher 70 Minuten des Matches gesehen. Ich hab mir aber nicht alles angeschaut. Einfach weil es Stellen gab wo einfach nichts passsiert und weil es auch manchmal echt Langweilig war. Zuerst hat es sicher 30 Minuten gedauert bis beide überhaupt fürs Match bereit waren. Hubschrauber, Reporter, Wachleute und anscheinend Offizielle von NJPW waren da. Am Anfang gab es sehr viel Grappling im Ring, dann ging es mal außerhalb des Rings weiter, dann ging es wieder in den Ring. Irgendwann haben Inoki und Saito auch stark geblutet. Irgendwann wurde es auch Dunkel und eine Art Laterne oder was das war wurde angezündet. Das Match ging natürlich weiter. Sehr spät als es schon Dunkel war hat dann Inoki mal einen Slepper Hold an Saito gezeigt und später nach sicher weitern 10-15 Minuten gab es den TKO und Saito war total fertig. Ein sehr schwierig zu bewertentes Match. Sowas hab ich echt noch nie gesehen. Man soll hier nichts großes erwarten es gab auch fast keine richtige Moves zu sehen. Dazu war die Insel ja nicht fähig was anständiges da zu zeigen wenn man den Ring weglässt. Da es auch nur ein Match war war es auch der Event. Ich gebe mal, 6 Punkte den schlecht war es nicht nur sehr schwierig hier ein richtiges Match zu sehen."
