| 12 | 02.11.2023 | kingrokong11 | 8.0 | Some fans may downgrade this show because there was no MOTY contender (something which we've come to expect from G-1 shows), but this was a really good show. The only match that fell flat was Tanga Loa vs. KENTA (and I highly doubt absolutely had high expectations for that match), and three matches (Taichi/Ospreay, Tsuji/Kiyomiya, & Narita/Umino) delivered in spades. Even the main event was solid. Was it as good as other G-1 main event matches (think Naito/Omega in 2016 or Moxley/Ishii in 2019) we've seen in the past? No, but it still did its job. |

| 15 | 18.08.2023 | Joyless | 5.0 | For a show that is supposed to build anticipation for the rest of the show I must admit I'm fairly unimpressed. The first match was a snooze and the second a truly dreadful and weirdly paced slog. Ren Narita and Shota put on a delightful match though it dragged in the last three minutes appraoching the draw. After a weirdly paced opening few minutes Great-O-Khan put on a really good match with Okada. Yota Tsuji and Kaito Kiyomiya put on an awesome match; both fighting like they had everything to prove. Yota's flip out of atiger suplex attempt early in the match was especially effective. Will Ospreay and Taichi almost told an interesting story with a stray kick throwing Ospreay's balance of about 2/3s of the way through the match, but it barely factored into the match and besides Taichi's signature spam at the end I didn't feel he put up enough of an effort to actually walk away with the win. Could notget through the SANADA Hikuleo match. I found myself continuing to watch this card out of feeling of necessity and not because it sparked joy, but there were a few stand out matches. Condsidering the performances given the pacinf felt all wrong and the exciting matches happened in the middle of the card. I'm not allowed to rate yet, but I'd give this a solid 5/10 |

| 22 | 25.07.2023 | Zaktay8 | 6.0 | Night 1 was a good start to the tournament and felt like it gave enough to get me excited for the rest of the tournament without giving anything away. I thought that Ospreay vs Taichi and Tsuji vs Kiyomiya were definitely the standout matches with Narita vs Umino being excellent as well. I was disappointed with the slowness of the Okada vs Khan and overall Kidd's performance however I believe that it will turn around soon in the next few nights. |

| 28 | 21.07.2023 | XXDoubleHHXX | 8.0 | None of the matches were match of the year contenders but the night was filled consistent high quality. Tanga Loa vs Kenta was probably the worst match of the night. The two just didn't click but I was nice for Kenta to bring out the DEFY title with him giving the company props. My personal favorite was the wild 20 minute draw between former young lion class members. |

| 30 | 20.07.2023 | boymeetsworld | 5.0 | For the first day of G1 Climax, when anticipation for what's gonna happen is off the charts, this was a show that brought my level of excitement for the rest of tournament way, way down. It really feels like a tournament that sets up a lot of stuff for the future (that doesn't seem to be very exciting) and a lot of filler. Okada vs. O-Khan for example surprisingly stuck in the second gear, instead of being a match that gives O-Khan great momentum for foreseeable future. Kiyomiya vs. Tsuji was pretty good, but nothing blow-away. Narita vs. Umino designed to be a very important match, but it wasn't capture my imagination. SANADA vs. Hikuleo was only the Main Event for SANADA's post-match promo, I guess, because as a match it was a 3-star special. |
| 31 | 20.07.2023 | Vinny Santos | 7.0 | A nice show to start the long tournament. A O.K. match to start the night, followed by the two worsts of the night. But then, Narita vs Umino was great and put the show back on track, followed by a nice Okada/O-Khan match, and a really nice Kiyomiya and Tsuji bout, I'm really excited to see those two at the rest of the tournament. Ospreay losing was a bit of shocking, but the match was good. And Sanada and Hikuleo was ok (I'm still not fully invested at Sanada being the World Champion, and probably never will). |

| 39 | 19.07.2023 | LecramFalcao | 7.0 | Mediocre show for what is supposed to be a kickoff of the most prestigious tournament. A couple of very good matches: Narita vs. Umino (***3/4* - match of the night) and Ospreay vs. Taichi (***3/4*), four good ones: Hashi vs. ELP (***), Okada vs. Khan (**3/4*), Kiyomiya vs. Tsuji (***1/4*) and Sanada vs. Hikuleo (***). An 8/10 has been thrown in the bin by two bad matches with three people who shouldn't have been in this tournament: Owens vs. Kidd (**1/4*) and Loa vs. Kenta (**1/4*) but after two days they aren't even worst matches. At the moment the best thing of this year's G1 is changing the time limit from 30 to 20 minutes. |
| 40 | 18.07.2023 | TheOverride | 9.0 | Great way to start the G1. YOSHI-HASHI and Phantasmo didn't take being the first fight of the tournament very seriously but they delivered. Chase Owens had a spectacular brawl with the vicious Gabe Kidd. KENTA and Tanga Loa had an interesting fight where Tanga dominated but had to carefully survive KENTA's knee attacks. Shota and Narita had the first of many fights and tied as perhaps one had to wait. Okada had a simple but fun fight against O-Khan. Tsuji went mercilessly against Kaito but the NOAH guy managed to survive. Taichi demonstrated why he is the King of Pro-Wrestling and defeated Ospreay, who once again demonstrated that, with his selling and performance, he is not a spot-monkey. And Hikuleo got another entertaining fight against SANADA, the truth is, the giant already knows how to take advantage of his height and slowness, since the beginning of the year he has stopped giving boring fights, he has greatly improved. |
| 41 | 18.07.2023 | exzachly | | The G1 tournament is back, with a twenty minute time limit change from the previous thirty. While I was initially skeptical of the change, it did allow for the show to breeze by. I just hope the grand epics that the G1 is so revered for do appear later as the tournament approaches the finals. Until then, the quick and tight action is welcomed. Match #1: Phantasmo v. YOSHI-HASHI (***) Nice match to kick off the tournament, I love that YH is considered a legit contender in this years tournament. Match #2: Owens v. Kidd (*1/2) I was surprised to see Gabe Kidd attack Owens to start, does that mean the Chase is out of BC? Even more surprising was Kidd got pinned clean as hell. Before that, he looked like a killer. Match #3: KENTA v. Tanga Loa (**) I hope KENTA is getting paid well by NJ because for a man of his caliber and with his history, he certainly doesnt feel like a serious threat. Match #4: Narita v. Umino (***3/4) I had a hunch this would go to time, but it was a tight twenty with solid action bell to bell. You can see why the NJ office is high on these two, with Shota really teetering the line between face and heel. Match #5: O-Khan v. Okada (**3/4) The action in this was tight and in the beginning stages, really had me believing that Okadas confidence was shaken. Overall solid match, if nothing super special. Match #6: Kiyomiya v. Tsuji (***1/2) I really enjoyed this match, as both guys were made out to look powerful and hungry. Tsuji still looked like a beast in defeat and Kiyomiya might be A Blocks underdog. Match #7: Taichi v. Ospreay (***3/4) Probably my favorite match of the night. It did well at condensing a story to fit the time limit while still relying on this new edge of Ospreay to drive it forward. Surprising Taichi win but crisp and crushing action throughout. Match #8: Hikuleo v. SANADA (***1/4) I think the main event accomplished exactly what it needed to in making Hikuleo look like a monster in his first G1 while establishing SANADA as the clear front runner to win the A Block as champion. I really think New Japan might have something in Hikuleo. Also, shout out to Chris Charleton for really channeling the story of each match and making the contests feel important in a vacuum as well as explaining the wider importance of each to the G1. Chris and Kevin make a great pairing. |

Ospreay v Taichi was definitely the highlight and was match of the night. I can't wait to continue to watch the younger stars like Umino, Narita, Tsuji and Kaito. Overall, a good start I do think Day 2 has the better matches on paper so I am looking forward to that. |

| 71 | 16.07.2023 | Dcarter1153 | 6.0 | ELP vs YOSHI-HASHI was good enough for the opener. I was going for ELP of course but there was good action. Owens vs Kidd started with a Brawl kind of all around that I thought was enjoyable. After all the shenanigans I was happy to see Owens get the win in the biggest meh match. I enjoyed the pre match Brawl more tbh. Tanga vs Kenta bored me and was nothing to tell anyone about. Umino vs Narita was one I had circled for tonight. And they delivered. Awesome match where these two only seem to get better every time out, and I'm very okay with the time limit draw. This felt like an old school njpw match and I love it. Okada vs Khan got better in the last five minutes but started kinda boring and slow. I really don't care for Great-O-Khan and Okada saved it a bit. Kiyomiya vs Tsuji was the 2nd of 3 I had circled tonight. It also delivered and was super enjoyable just wasn't on the level of umino vs Narita tbh. My final circled match tonight of course Ospreay vs Taichi should be great as always. And it was. Not as good as the one in January (or February idr) but still very very enjoyable. I don't think the main event ever should main event any show tbh but Hikuleo showed up and it wasn't all as bad as I figured |

There was an average throughout this show which I thought was in that 6/10 satisfactory range (I seem to be lower than average with the match ratings on this one), but three hours of mostly that is hard to get excited about. Ospreay vs Taichi wasn't their best match together though it was fairly good, but as with just about every match on this card - as well as the card itself - I was left thinking "That wasn't bad but I wish it had been more than it was." That's especially true for me when it came to Shota vs Ren, which ideally would have set up their long-term story with a great match. I feel like I'd only be looking at the final few minutes if I said I was really into that one. By no means an awful show but three hours is PPV length and requires a little more justification than this card provided. It may not cost you more money than your subscription fee but time is the one currency you can never get back. |
