Overall WWE Royal Rumble (2023) is an amazing show and a huge step up from WWE Royal Rumble (2022) thanks to it's top matches and moments."

[9.0] "This show is the best wrestling show I've ever seen live, and while this may be somewhat average to most people, this pay-per-view is special to me. The Men's Royal Rumble opening the show is possibly my favorite of all-time; so much star power, the crowd was molten hot, so much storyline advancement and progression, not a whole lot of surprises but I don't need surprises to enjoy a Royal Rumble personally. An amazing match. I will stand by this until the day that I die, the Pitch Black was not that bad. It was good, not really good, but it was good! It was a fun match that will always be bittersweet to me as it was Wyatt's final televised match before his passing. Maybe the fact that I was there makes me look at it with rose-tinted glasses, but you know what, I enjoyed it, and I think it does not deserve the reputation it gets, such as being voted the Worst Match of 2023. C'mon. Anyway, Belair vs. Alexa was just kind of whatever, kind of boring and I struggle to remember too much from it. The Women's Royal Rumble wasn't as good as the Men's one, but it had its moments and was certainly a fun time. The main event between Reigns and Owens was a great match too, and the show closing angle with Sami Zayn finally turning on Roman Reigns was one of the most satisfying pay-offs in wrestling history in my opinion, and the largest pop I'd ever heard live. An amazing show that I will think back fondly of."

But what put this show up there was the segment after the main event to end the PLE, just pure cinema, every little acting was great from all the parts, a truly unique moment in wrestling history, and that should be rewarded."
MahdiAbuIsmail wrote on 20.02.2024:
[6.0] "Good royal rumble event, good winners won both matches, the two matches between the rumbles were awful but fortunately short. The 2 royal rumble matches were correct i was hoping for more for a royal rumble match, not big returns and not big moments except for the Logan/Ricochet spot but the good winners won and thats the most important for the beginning of the WM road. The main event and the ending were really the strongest part of the show, really good match, a lot of hype and the betrayed of Zayn was awesome, the bloodline storyline is so entertaining, good start for the road to WM!"

[8.0] "men's Royal Rumble match was phenomenal with the right winner. Womens royal rumble match was good with the right winner. Roman vs KO was entertaining and the ending scene with the turn was awesome. That made up the bulk of the PLE so the 2 not so great matches in between aren't TOO big of a deal. Everyone needs a bathroom break."
HfnH wrote on 26.12.2023:
[7.0] "Not the strongest show since Triple H took charge but thanks to some memorable moments and a strong main card, this is a Rumble worth watching. The Mens Rumble (****) was extremely well-done and one of the better modern Rumble matches. There were a bunch of highlights and storyline progressions for WrestleMania season and the brilliant showcase of the big names helped make up for the disappointing lack of surprise entrants. The last stretch between GUNTHER (the man of the match who entered first and survived until the end) and the eventual winner Cody Rhodes helps elevate an already-good Rumble into a great one with some terrific back and forth action ending in the right winner that hyped the crowd up for the rest of the show. However, the middle portion is where the show falters as Knight/Wyatt (*1/2) was a borefest of a street fight with a forced sponsor (which ended up being the late Bray Wyatts final match. Rest in peace, Bray), whilst Belair/Bliss (**1/4) was a boring, predictable affair with Bliss failing to convince people she was a legit threat to Belairs reign. The show managed to pick up with a solid and enjoyable Womens Rumble match (***1/2), featuring an amazing Iron Woman performance from both winner Rhea Ripley & runner-up Liv Morgan, a slew of fun surprises from both legends and NXT stars and even a resurgence of Asuka as a main event competitor after years of lacklustre booking. After the Hardy music performance gave us a free toilet break, the show was capped off with the third Universal Title match between Roman Reigns & Kevin Owens (***3/4). It didnt live up to the chaos of their last two Rumble encounters but was still a very fun match on its own, with some nice spots that showed the ruthlessness of Roman extremely well. Then came the ending. After Roman retained, he gave Sami Zayn his final test: to put down Kevin Owens with a steel chair. And then Sami betrayed Roman & the Bloodline by smashing the chair into his back to an ungodly pop from the crowd, before the Bloodline destroyed him, with a conflicted Jey Uso walking out. Seriously, this was one of the greatest segments of all-time, adding another brilliant chapter to the Bloodline saga, as well as some new layers with Jey Usos sudden walkout and completing the resurrection of Sami Zayns career that had been building up early 2022. Aside from a few poor matches, two fun Rumble matches and a phenomenal ending help make this show a good one. (7/10)"

[5.0] "Overall a terrible event, one bad match and one that was one of the worst matches of all time. The royal rumbles were predictable and nothing special. This is getting extra rating because of the incredible finale, really an all timer post-match angle. But that's not enough."

[5.0] "Overall it wasn't great. The two rumble matches were too easy to predict and many moments were quite boring. Plus the booking was awful and predictible, it seems impossible for WWE to write surprising or just cool moments in rumble matches anymore. The Knight vs Wyatt and Bliss vs Belair were bad and kind of useless. The main event was okay but was nothing special, however the aftermath was really interesting and was handled pretty well. Pretty bad for a Rumble PPV but it was still better than last year in my opinion."
JacquesRougeauCanHaveMyWife wrote on 09.09.2023:
[7.0] "A very good Royal Rumble PPV with two stinkers ruining the whole thing. LA Knight vs Bray Wyatt was a disgrace and Alexa vs Bianca right after that sucked the life out of me. But apart from that the men's Rumble was booked great with Gunther looking strong and Cody earning the spot at Mania. The women's one was okay too mainly because of Rhea and the main event was great with the aftermath being pheonemal. The crowd reaction to Sami's chair shot has to be one of the biggest pops ever. Loved the show and how it had a weird feeling that something's about to go down thanks to the buildup to the main event."
wcwfan wrote on 06.09.2023:
"I first saw them use a ridiculously long run way to the ring for the 2019 Rumble and this one was even worse than that. All it means is that the instant impact of someone's music hitting and them (traditionally) running to the ring and going on a hot streak is now ruined. Instead, by the time they've run all the way down to the ring its almost time for the next wrestler's countdown plus they're knackered and need a rest! Crazy how WWE never realise that less is more - when Austin's music hit he didn't need a big cartoon skull appearing over the crowd and a load of pomp and ceremony - it was glass smash, in the ring within 10 seconds and kicking ass."

It was a fun event, but without this being the Royal Rumble and The Bloodline story this would've been a lot worse."

"The Mens royal rumble match was good not great. The ending was very predictable especially since Cody entered at #30. While the Women's royal rumble was also predictable, it was helped by the fact that the winner entered at #1. Roman vs Owens was expectedly good, however the whole show was overshadowed by an underwhelming opening match. Overall. It was a really solid show, however there were a couple of negatives as well."

[10.0] "This event had two of my all time favorite Rumbles, a very memorable ending whose reverberations continued to play out in PLE main events 4 months later (to date), and that ultimately led not only to a WrestleMania main event, but also one of the most emotionally charged title matches of the company's history when Zayn got his shot in Montreal. Rhea, Walter, & Liv Morgan all gave potentially career altering performances, and the other two matches were fun, digestible midcard stuff. Years from now, I think kids who first got exposed to wrestling around this period will love it with the kind of enthusiasm that some people save love for 1992, 2000, 2010 & 2018. Hugely successful outing, quality wise. The Takeover of Royal Rumbles for me."

Also the other matches weren't too good either. The women's Title match was whatever. I didn't care about it at all. As for the pitch black match, it was bad. Really bad. LA Knight deserves a better treatment and Bray Wyatt needs to stop being booked in gimmick matches. His character is very good but the matches aren't good at all. Both the Royal Rumbles were great. Loved Walter in it. He's a star. As for the main event. It's one of the best things in pro-wrestling in recent memory. Overall, a pretty good PLE."

[5.0] "Better than the 2022 Rumble, but anything would have been. The men's rumble was genuinely pretty great although would have been nice to see a couple more surprises other than just Booker. Obviously the main event was what people came to see, just shows how much this storyline owns WWE right now that a Roman feud takes precedence over both Rumbles. Women's rumble was very mid, but Rhea and Asuka kicked ass. Bianca-Alexa is not even worth talking about. The infamous Mountain Dew Pitch Black match is so funny that it exceeds the awfulness into something to just appreciate as a WrestleCrap hall of famer."

Ripley, Morgan, Damage CTRL, Stark, Asuka, Niven, and Rodriguez had solid performances in the women's rumble. Zayn turning on The Bloodline was great storytelling. The Rumble Matches and The Main Event are worth watching. Shame Dolph Ziggler wasn't in the rumble for the first time since 2008."

[8.0] "A fantastic start to the night was seen with the most anticipated Rumble win finally becoming a reality. Congrats to Cody Rhodes for his massive showing as well as WALTER for breaking the mega record. Wyatt is surrounded by polarization once again as he battled (or should I say, decimated) Knight in his new atmosphere which looked cool. The ending leaves the door open for many interesting plot options that could pull more hype for his fans like me or more criticism. Bianca & Alexa did a decent work, but it could've been easily on any episode of Raw (like Raw 30) to make it more newsworthy. It was fine and the reconnection of the latter with the Howdy fiasco has to go deep to have my clear opinion. It's still unclear on what's next and I trust the current creative who've brought the best out of Wyatt so far. The women's Rumble was really good with nice showcases from NXT, solid returns in Asuka & McCool and another controversial star in Nia Jax. However, Ripley channeled the Hercules within herself and won as expected. The main event was a strong closure to the show where the action was pretty good, but the story is what enhanced this clash to an excellent level especially the final moments & the post-match emotional burst. I'm stoked to see the new developments in work; I'll be seated to witness something captivating. The unpredictability heading to the show was high as last year. The major difference is that last year was a debacle in terms of the Rumble performances, the match card (except Reigns/Rollins) and lack of major surprises. This year, those wrongs were corrected with ample number of surprises where some clicked well, and some didn't. The Rumble performances were great apart from the winners and the match quality was consistent. I'm curious with all of the outcomes which keeps my interest high on the road to WrestleMania."

[6.0] "A show that will be remembered for the amazing storyline that ended the show. Probably the most predictable Royal Rumble show match to match but everything was done right. Gunther had an astounding 70 minute perforamance in the Men's Rumble and is the last person eliminated by the returning Cody Rhodes, who ended up winning the match. Rhea Ripley won the Women's Rumble, as she was the only choice that made sense. The Pitch Black match was whatever and the Biana/Alexa match was moreso the same. The main event was a solid outing and the show ended with the greatest angle in WWE history."

A good main event but the best part of the event was the ending with Sami leaving the bloodline which was 11 out of 10. Pat McAfee was a nice surprise return but wish they had just thrown him into the rumble before he joined commentary. Never a fan of the concert in the middle of a wrestling show."

DanTalksRasslin wrote on 03.02.2023:
[6.0] "A very mixed-bag show whose highs at least help to elevate its lows. On the positive side, main event was good, and especially notable for one of the best-executed post-match angles in recent memory. The men's Rumble was mostly well-done, with some memorable spots and performances, including a starmaking beginning-to-end run for Gunther. While Cody was probably the top choice for winner anyway, his entrance at #30 and subsequent victory seemed just a little to obvious - I can't imagine why they announced his return in advance instead of at least keeping a little bit of mystery as to whether or not he would actually be there. The women's Rumble had a good choice in winner, although also a bit obvious that she'd go the distance when she came out at #1 (at least her attack angle by Beth Phoenix earlier made it a little more uncertain) The women's Rumble was also a bit of a slog to get through, especially in the middle part, and the "surprise" appearances weren't exactly stellar, as I doubt many were clamoring for Nia Jax, and Michelle McCool has been a "surprise" in almost every previous women's Rumble already. The rest of the undercard was also on the weak side. The Mountain Dew Pitch Black Match(tm) was visually mildly interesting, but pretty average in terms of action (and a bit disappointing that the mystery stipulation was just a regular no-DQ match fought under blacklight), and the ending seemed somewhat botched; I'm also personally struggling to find much interest in the current Wyatt storyline. Belair vs. Bliss was very average as well; short enough to be a TV match and Belair doesn't seem to click as well with Bliss as she does with other opponents, and of course also featured more Wyatt silliness that can only drag Bliss' forward momentum down. Tempting for a 5 rating, but the high points of the men's Rumble, the winner of the women's, the main event and especially the strong main event and its post-match angle are the most memorable moments, and good enough to pull it up to the extra point."

Honestly even Roman vs Kevin Owens wasn't amazing or anything, it's the post match angle that made it so memorable. Both of the winners of the royal rumble were good though. I think Cody's win was an epic moment, and would have been the best moment on any other show didn't have that fire Sami Zayn segment. The woman's rumble was fun too but in my opinion not as good as the men's rumble. Overall this show was at it's best during the rumble matches and the post main event angle. A 7/10 seems appropriate to me."

Men's Rumble was quality, a bit predictable with Cody winning, but a joy to watch given the performance of Gunther, Brock's 3 minutes of terror, the Ricochet/Logan spot, and scum bag ways of even Dom Mysterio. The women's rumble was even better, and probably the second best event on the card. Rhea Ripley is an animal, and her finish was the best in a Rumble since Shawn Michaels in '95 to win the Womens Rumble with her skin the cat spot, and hurricanrana on Liv Morgan. Now the bad: Bray Wyatt vs LA Knight, Bianca/Bliss. Both were sub par, with the Bray Wyatt stuff leaving a lot to be desired, the best you can say is it was interesting for a gimmick match. Overall, this RR has historic replay value for the ending, for Cody, and for Rhea's thrilling win. Incredible show."

The men's royal rumble was the best actual match. Much better than previous years. The actual main event match was fairly standard, a TV main event. The middle of the card was dreadful, to be honest. Bray is really bad and it ain't Vince's fault. Alexa/Bianca was nothing. The women's royal rumble was pretty bad until the end, the final stretch was pretty good. People are definitely overcompensating the quality of this PLE due to the great show ending angle. The actual show was pretty mediocre to bad. +"
