Talking of the masterpiece main event between Ospreay and Takagi, that match alone was almost as long as the previous four matches combined. I would say the opener was the second best, the second match the weakest match on the card. Unfortunately - or to our fortune, as some might say - the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title Bout had to be scrapped because of bad-virus-thingy. And we all know how catious those Japanese are. Good for them, bad for us. But I digress. There is no point in watching anything besides the main event, so spare your time and just skip straight to Ospreay vs. Tagaki No. IV. |

Das Main Event zwischen Shingo Takagi und Will Ospreay ist dann aber so großartig, dass es diese Show am Ende um ein oder zwei Level nach oben hievt. Wenn man nur die größeren NJPW Shows ansieht, wird es einem vielleicht gar nicht als so etwas Besonderes vorkommen, dass man hier so einen Klassiker zu sehen bekommt, wenn man aber die ganzen Road to Shows gesehen hat, bei denen es höchstens überdurchschnittliche Matches zu sehen gibt und wenn man dann zusätzlich dazu auch noch den mehr als eigenartigen ersten Tag von Wrestling Dontaku als Vergleich hinzu zieht, dann ist es eine echte Überraschung, dass wir hier so ein Monster von Match zu sehen kriegen. Wenn man ehrlich ist, war ein solches Match auch überfällig, um nicht komplett das Vertrauen in NJPW zu verlieren, denn zuletzt sind die Shows nicht gerade berauschend gewesen und man drohte das über Jahre aufgebaute Vertrauen der Zuschauer zu verlieren. Das dürfte mit dieser Show und diesem Main Event erst einmal wieder vom Tisch sein. |

Als Show nicht wirklich stark, was natürlich auch an den Covid Cancellations lag, aber mein Gott, was für ein großartiger Main Event. Über die Tag Matches will ich gar nicht viele Worte verlieren, hat man so oder so ähnlich alles schon mal gesehen. Ospreay gegen Shingo war absolut fantastisch. Das ist einfach so unfassbar atemberaubend, was die zwei jedes mal zeigen, wenn sie in den Ring steigen. Etwas verhaltener Beginn, der aber trotzdem nicht einfach nur vor sich hinplätschert. Alles, was dann so ungefähr ab Minute 25 passiert, hat mich komplett geflasht. Einige Leute sagen jetzt wieder zu viele Konter, aber das hat es für mich grandios gemacht, ist dann vermutlich Geschmackssache. Die Poison Rana von Shingo war mein absolutes Highlight im Match. Jetzt ist scheinbar erstmal Pause, was New Japan angeht, aber wenigstens hat man sich mit einem Kracher in die Zwangspause verabschiedet. Die ganze Situation ist natürlich arg unglücklich, ich hoffe aber, dass man Richtung Dominion wieder einsteigen kann und im Sommer dann auch die zwei Grand Slam Shows nachholen wird. |

Allerdings zeigen beide Wrestling Dontaku Show sowie Sakura Genesis, warum ich kein Interesse an New Japan habe. Die Under/Midcard besteht aus irrelevantem und größtenteils schlechtem (auch mit furchtbarem Sports "Entertainment") Füllmaterial. Mir wird nicht vermittelt, für wen ich mich interessieren geschweige denn mitfiebern sollte. Da ist es mir auch egal, wie gut die Main Events angeblich sind. Zur gleichen Zeit lief eine Show von TJP, wo es einen klaren Spannungsbogen gibt und sich die Charaktere weiterentwickeln. Das zu sehen, ist einfach befriedigend. Es scheint aktuell nicht der Fall zu sein, dass sich New Japan in eine bessere Richtung bewegt. |

| 31 | 04.05.2021 | KING | 8.0 | - Suzuki-gun vs Bullet Club ** 3/4 or 6. 5/10 : nice opener, Tama and Tanga are much better in tag and these two trios are well oiled, especially DOUKI with Taichi and Zack. - Bullet Club vs Tenzan and Wato ** or 5/10 : not their fault, some were kept at home, so Wato and Ishimori had to carry the worst heavyweight of the company and old Tenzan. - United Empire vs LIJ *** or 6. 5/10 : good trios match that continues the long feud between the factions, the ending was particularly convincing. - good guys vs Bullet Club ** 2/5 : mostly a match to put the guys on the card, they tried to hit their greatest hits before the main event. - Ospreay vs Takagi ***** or 10/10 : the intensity, the story, the facial expressions by both, incredible. So far the best match of the year. Takagi has reached god status and is the real best bout machine of 2021, but since being called my some the best in the world in 2019, Ospreay has improved even further, becoming a full heavyweight, ready for the top title scene of New Japan, in this year he stepped up greatly, and yes, he faced the best of the best, but he more than did his part. Takagi is a god of gods, the hard hitting offense, the fighting spirit, this match had it all, and I would've been ok with it being the headliner for Wrestle Grand Slam. - PPV 8/10 : undercard was just there and suffered from some being left out, such as Suzuki and Okada, and the junior match especially, but the main event was godly and upped the entire average of the show. |

Despite the undercard being an easy watch, with the 6 man LIJ/UE particularly fun, this could be considered a one match show (thus putting even more pressure on Shingo and Ospreay), but what a match it was. Close to 45 minutes of adrenaline fuelled, brutal physicality between the two top wrestlers in the world since 2019. One of the greatest matches in recent memory, possibly the best Ospreay/Shingo match in their series, which is remarkable in itself. After such a incredible match, the hype for Ospreay Vs Okada at the Tokyo Dome was just increased tenfold. |
