[5.0] "Honestly, it is a really overrated show. This is a one match card. Foley/Orton not only steal the show, but might as well have been the only match ON the show. The main even triple threat match is definitely a good encounter, and is the only other above average match on this card, but considering how significantly worse it is than the Wrestlemania match, its stock only climbs so high. Everything else is immensely forgettable. As a full show..? It is certainly a decent watch, but it isn't anything special."

El evento empezó con una gran pelea de shelton Benjamin vs Rick flair una de las luchas con las que muchos pensaron que sería el push de Benjamin. El evento cumplió con una gran calidad luchística."

[5.0] "An Awful show saved by an incredible main event. This was largely boring and underwhelming. The aura was not there for most of the show. The Coachman/Tajiri match was awful, and I didn't enjoy Cactus/Orton as much as others. Couple of other matches were just a bit flat. Edge's return match did not feel special. Without the epic main event, this is a nothing show."

[6.0] "(6.3/10) You could call Backlash 2004 a two-match show, but that would be slightly discrediting the women's championship and handicap encounter from the same card, which drew heated battles as well (though the fans didn't really care for Victoria/Lita). The rest of the show had it's moment, but wasn't particularly good. Though, with a main-event as electric as Benoit/HHH/HBK that ended with a thunderous roar in celebration of Benoit's victory, plus the jaw-dropping punch in the face from Orton/Foley that is something that haunts the soul, Backlash 2004 achieved success and establish a legacy that makes it worth revisiting every now and then, unless you're one who's troubled while watching Benoit's work."

[10.0] "Most of the matches on the show are either whatever or awful, but the Benjamin Vs Flair is solid, the handicap match is actually good, Benoit Vs Michaels Vs Triple H 2 is really spectacular and Foley Vs Orton is an iconic masterclass. Overall WWE Backlash (2004) is a really brilliant show mostly thanks to it's top two matches."

[3.0] "One very good match and that's it. At least there weren't so many bad talking segments like on the rest of these RAW PPVs, but it still wasn't a good show. Orton vs Foley was the only contest that got me hooked and actually had some purpose, as it put over Randy fantastically and gave him a lot of needed edge. But everything else... ugh. Benjamin vs Flair wasn't bad, but sloppy at times, Coachman vs Tajiri was insulting to the intelligence, Jericho vs Christian & Trish had some nice spots with Stratus, but similar to their WrestleMania match it lacked any aggression from both guys and Victoria vs Lita was an awful, choreographed mess. Rosey & Helms vs La Resistance had an unbearable Eugene segment, Edge vs Kane lacked any heat and the main event was mid and nowhere near the level of their first encounter. The work wasn't bad, but it was much slower and the underdog aura was missing this time. So another underwhelming Backlash PPV that looked like Vince was still thinking about starting any new angles."

[10.0] "Fantastic PPV and probably the best one of the year with another excellent triple Threat main event, which was a rematch of the classic Benoit/HBK/HHH match. The atmosphere throughout the match was just electric in Benoit's home town, as well as booing the holy hell out of HBK. Even that match is overshadowed though by the outstanding Orton v Foley Hardcore Match which really did go above and beyond all hype and expectations and is one of the most violent and bloody wars I have ever seen in a WWE ring. Randy Orton truly looked like a star and his toughness taking a thumbtack spot and then still taking some brutal bumps afterwards earned him so much respect when it was finally over. Theres a good undercard here too with Shelton v Flair, Jericho v Christian/Trish and a solid Lita v Victoria match all worth a watch. Even the Tajiri v Coachman match was much more competently worked than I expected, although the booking at the end was bad. Theres a couple of forgettable matches that get the death spot of following Orton v Foley and unfortunately one of them was the surprisingly lacking Edge vs Kane match. Still, this was a damn good PPV overall."

[8.0] "The Undercard for this show has some underwhelming stuff, especially Coachman/Tajiri which was just embarrassing but nothing that was just there overstays its welcome so that was a positive at least. Victoria/Lita was shockingly average, but the crowd just wasnt into the match at all which is understandable considering how they were presented on TV. Shelton Flair and the handicap match were both good matches. Cactus/Orton was awesome and made every weapon shot feel impactful while telling a story at that. The main event was pretty damn good, but it went like 3 minutes too long, and also just failed to live up to what they did at Mania. So overall I thought this was a low 8 thanks to Cactus/Orton a strong main event and two good lower card matches."

[8.0] "Very strong PPV. Yes, half the card is sub-par, but those matches are all very short so I didn't feel that they brought down the vibe too much. Cactus Jack vs Randy Orton is the clear highlight, and one of WWE's best hardcore matches of all time. I've always found the handicap match to be underrated and a lot of fun, and the main event is very good (albeit, nowhere near as good as their WM match). One of WWE's best events in 2004."

[5.0] "A total 2-match show, with everything else varying from fine to awful. Those 2 key matches saved this show from being plain bad. Shelton vs Flair was a fine opener. I enjoyed Shelton's athleticism, selling, and cheeky attitude, but he seemed to rush/fumble in his comebacks, making them look a bit awkward. Flair was good with his old-school beatdown work made up of his signature strikes and cheap shots. His selling was typically melodramatic but not overbearing. A shame he wasn't agile enough to bump properly for Shelton's stuff. **3/4. Tajiri vs Coach was an absolute joke. Tajiri had to sell for a total loser like Coach, who then won by interference. WWE absolutely sucks. 1/4*. Jericho vs Christian & Trish was a standard babyface-vs-heel handicap match. Christian was good as the cheap and scrappy heel that was constantly embarrassed and out-smarted by the cool babyface Jericho. Trish's smug and cowardly heel character work was good too, surprisingly make for a worthwhile addition to the match. The constant trading of control was decent, even if their exchanges weren't very creative. **3/4. Victoria vs Lita had the typical awkwardness that all WWE women's matches pre-2014 had, but it wasn't as frequent as usual, and their chemistry was surprisingly only slightly below average. **1/4. Orton vs Foley was surprisingly really good for a hardcore match, which is a stipulation I usually hand-wave. There were a variety of genuinely nasty-looking weapon attacks and prop bumps, and the way the match constantly changed by introducing new weapons and props kept it fresh and very engaging. Orton sold very well when working from below, and he showed good killer instinct when working from top. Foley did well showing how unhinged and sadistic he was, making each hardcore spot feel even more captivating. Very easily the MOTN. ***1/2. Rosey & Hurricane vs La Resistance was a worthless filler/cool-down match, featuring nothing interesting or engaging. Even worse, Eugene took up heaps of screen time. 1/2*. Kane vs Edge was short and uneventful. Kane's control segment was very slow and boring, and Edge's comeback was equally unengaging. Their selling and character work was fine, but this was still a total 'nothing' match. *3/4. Benoit vs HHH vs HBK 2 is overrated just like their original Wrestlemania match was, and it was also inferior to that match but ultimately still quite good. Benoit's intensity and brutality were unsurprisingly the highlight, especially in front of his hometown fans. HHH and HBK were also good but definitely leagues below Benoit's level. They sadly repeated some spots from their 1st match in the 1st half, and then the 2nd half was pretty stale as although they had some more creative spots, they unfortunately didn't come across too excitingly, and their exchanges felt like they were just going through the motions. Still good work all-around, but it didn't feel appropriately special considering the setting and stakes. ***1/4"

[9.0] "2nd best PPV of 2004 so far. The triple threat is the best match here but not the only one worth watching. It's really depressing to see Nancy and Chris' kids be there obviously. Orton vs Foley is incredible and really makes Orton an actual credible threat. Victoria vs Lita is a good match and a shame that the fans shit on it. Jericho vs Christian/Trish is good too."

[10.0] "The biggest strength is the two MOTY conteders right next to each other, with Orton/Foley being a particular all time great achievement, but I also really liked Shelton/Flair, Jericho/Christian & Trish, and Victoria/Lita. Tajiri losing to Coach was very stupid, but still overall this is a really great show."

[9.0] "Amazing PPV, two of the best matches in WWE history right here on this PPV in the hardcore match and the triple threat, an extremely underrated match in the handicap and a fun opener in Benjamin/Flair. Even Coachman/Tajiri wasn't as bad as I expected. That Tag match didn't need to be here though, filler in every sense of the word, and Edge vs Kane wasn't as good as Edge's comeback match should've been. Apart from that though, the best brand-exclusive PPV hands down."

[8.0] "This PPV had two really excellent matches and one match is pretty solid. Benjamin vs Flair was an ok match, nothing special nothing I would recommend to watch - ***. Taijiri vs Coach - DUD. Jericho vs Christian and Trish Stratus was a good handicap match, really, Christian and Jericho can make anything worth watching - ***1/2. Lita vs Victoria was awful but for a long time in WWE, Women's Wrestling was never really interesting to me - DUD. Randy Orton vs Cactus Jack WOOOOOW what a fucking match it was, to this day, one of my favorite WWE matches from Orton and Cactus is a legend - ****1/2 for that great match. Didnt care for the tag match - DUD. Edge vs Kane was soooo meh - *. Now, the main event. It was literally again a triple threat between the same wrestlers like WM 20 with the same winner, and these men managed to deliver an amazing match even though my 5 stars go to the Mania 20 match - ****3/4. Overall, a really good post Wrestlemania PPV"

[8.0] "Writers take it easy for Backlash, simply copy-pasting the best matchs from last month WrestleMania. Seems lazy... but it worked ! Jericho/Christian and Benoit/HHH/Michaels are both as good as the originals and picking the best is up to everyone's taste. But the third WM duplicate showed that writers were working all along. Trading The Rock and Evolution for studs and barbed wire, the hardcore match between Randy Orton and Mick Foley was not only instant classic but turned the unproved Orton into a respected, legit wrestler. The fine booking of the minor matchs completing the card and the excellent wrestling effort from top to bottom makes it one of the best post-WM PPV."

Randy Orton vs Cactus Jack is spectacular, the main event isn't worse than the triple threat match of Wrestlemania XX, Jericho vs Christian, Edge vs Kane and Benjamin vs Flair are good. Also che Canadian crowd was fantastic this time."
