[6.0] "Well, this SummerSlam felt kinda inconsistent to me, it's not like every match is memorable or something, but the management and buried of Diamond Dallas Page, the poorly executed Rhyno vs Jericho was bad, the Main Event that in match was forgettable and reminded me of some 96-97 PPVs from the In Your House era, but then some good moments like Angle vs Stone Cold a great match, and that's all I can say because the rest didn't felt worth it the time, but the rivalry of Alliance vs WWF carries it for a extra point. 6/10"

[5.0] "A very average SummerSlam edition in which the individual matches are fine to pretty good for the most part, but the booking decisions and constant overbooking (unfortunately the norm for this period) negatively affect the overall quality of the show for me. The most frustrating example is definitely the Austin vs. Angle match, which is absolutely fantastic but ultimately ruined by an incredibly weak and overbooked (non-)finish. The whole show is built around The Rock's return match in the main event, but he already seems partially checked out. The world title he's fighting for feels like a total afterthought, and Booker T comes across as impossible to take seriously, presented as little more than a body to feed to Rocky for the night. The only other match that really stands out is the Hardcore Title match between RVD and Jeff Hardy. They deliver some great ladder match action, definitely among the better examples of this style, but even here, the ending becomes a bit chaotic, mainly due to some sloppiness and botches (though thankfully no non-finishes or interference, which is a relief on this card)."

[7.0] "An interesting show. Certainly a step up from the previous month PPV, but it was clear the Invasion storyline was quite a mess. Most of it was already WWF vs WWF and with few exceptions the invaders didn't look like threats at all. I like the opening package set to Drowning Pool and the backstage segments throughout the show are silly fun. Don't know why Stasiak was running into walls trying to take out Rock but I laughed anyways. In ring the undercard was pretty solid throughout with the exception of the tag title match. The Taker/DDP feud is probably the worst part of the whole invasion in my opinion. Angle vs Austin is the match of the night by quite a bit even with the undecisive finish, which to be fair was fairly well done. The Main Event wasn't quite as good, but it was at least a fine ending to the night Match Ratings: Storm vs. Edge (7/10) Spike & The APA vs. Test & The Dudley Boyz (6/10) Tajiri vs. X-Pac (7/10) Rhyno vs. Chris Jericho (6/10) Jeff Hardy vs. Rob Van Dam (8/10) DDP & Kanyon vs. Kane & The Undertaker (2/10) Steve Austin vs. Kurt Angle (9/10) Booker T vs. The Rock (6/10)"

[8.0] "Fresh off the Invasion PPV, Summerslam 2001 delivers where that show didn't with a really strong card that is only really let down in one match and the general booking of the Alliance. Yeah, the tag team championship match is piss poor and the Alliance are booked like chumps with Booker T and DDP all eating damaging losses, but looking past this is a strong show. Angle/Austin put on a clinic of a WWF championship match that would've gone down as an all timer if it had a clean finish. RVD/Jeff Hardy put on a stellar ladder match for the hardcore championship and Edge/Storm & Jericho/Rhyno both had solid undercard matches. The main event was a servicable closer to the show with the Rock winning the WCW world heavyweight championship in a fine match with Booker T. Sure, it made Booker look like an afterthought, but it was fine for the night. While not a perfect show, Summerslam 2001 was a very strong show that just so happened to be during the middle of one of the biggest misses in WWF history."

[5.0] "You can feel from watching this show that the steam has cooled off on the WWF between WM17 and now. The biggest blow on this event is simply interference. Every single match but three have interference in them. That's 63% of this event having some kind of interference. And even though Angle/Austin didn't have interference, it still had a screwy finish. So all you had during this whole show was an excellent ladder match and an awful squash cage match that ran clean. The Invasion storyline was getting convoluted, so the matches themselves were getting convoluted. Most of this show was forgettable and underdelivered what you'd expect from the names on paper. Austin/Angle was match of the night, although Van Dam/Hardy have an excellent match and Tajiri/X-Pac have a truly underrated one too. There are worse Summerslams, and this isn't a dud, but it maybe left a little to be desired."

[9.0] "Summerslam 2001 is a pay-per-view that I've always enjoyed watching. I'm a big fan of the Invasion storyline (and yes I know it wasn't executed as well as it should've been), but this show was great for the storyline. Storm vs. Edge was a great opener and a great IC title match. The action was really good and we see the start of Christian's shift into a heel and an Alliance member. APA/Spike vs. Dudleys/Test was ok. It was really just another match on the card. Spike took a nice table bump off an Acid Drop but that was about it. Wish we got a Matt Hardy European title match instead. X-Pac vs. Tajiri was a nice showcase for the light heavyweight/cruiserweight guys. It's not apart of the Invasion storyline as both men are WWF affiliated. Jericho vs. Rhyno was decent. There were a lot of double downs and down time in the beginning of the match which brought the match down for me, but it was still a good match. Jeff vs. RVD was an amazing match. Ladder matches are always fun and this one didn't disappoint. There were so many original and unique spots involving the ladder and it just rules. Jersey Triad (without Bam Bam Bigelow) vs. Brothers of Destruction was the worst match on the card. The whole DDP stalker storyline sucked and this match did not to make DDP or Kenyon look like threats in the alliance, just punching bags for Vince's hitmen. Austin vs. Angle was MOTN, just great long term storytelling that will reach new heights at Unforgiven. Rock vs. Booker was a disappointment of a main event. The action was very slow and it wasn't suitable as a main event."

The invasion angle was a total disaster. DDP and Booker T were the only main event stars that could be part of the angle and they were both made to look like idiots. Although at least Booker got a competitive match here."

Overall WWF SummerSlam (2001) is such a fantastic show."

[5.0] "I'm not understanding the higher votes on this or the high WOW rating for angle/austin. Even after reading others comments, I'm just not feeling the same way. I did really like the RVD/Hardy match even though it was a spotfest with no psychology. But that's really what I expect from those two at this point. I was definitely looking forward to the Tajiri/pac match but it didn't meet my expectations. And i wish Tajiri won because he is obviously the better wrestler of the two and I'd like to see more of him on TV and with different opponents. Jericho/Rhyno match was OK. I think Jericho is a one trick pony and at this point in his career he is not able to main event. Not so sure about rhyno, so I'd like to see him get some better competition. But you know, instead of doing that, they put on a 10 minute squash match in a cage? Whatever man. Undertaker is garbage right now and this "Sara" angle needs to die. DDP had basically no offense, despite being the most talented wrestler in that match. I read in another thread that there was some backstage politics going on that caused this stupid setup with stalking, stupid feud, and stupid match. I don't know if I buy that, but it's really the only thing that makes sense at this point. so I'll go with it. The Rock/Booker match should not have been the main event, but I did love how Booker T gets pinned literally immediately right after doing his spinarooni. What a dumb move and I hope this kills that move forever (it probably won't). Austin/Angle was the match of the night and while I enjoyed it, I believe it is massively overrated. I don't know if my expectations were just too high after seeing the WOW rating, but I doubt that was the problem. I read the other reviews and it seems so man yother people actually enjoyed this quite a bit. I'll say it wasn't dog shit bad or even bad at all.. it was a good match. But 4.5 stars? nah. At the end of the night we have the two biggest stars in the industry with the two biggest belts... but I'd prefer a situation where the biggest guys are all going for the main belt and the WCW belt is being fought over by guys like Edge, Jeff Hardy, RVD, and maybe Jericho. I don't know when HHH and Benoit are coming back but those can be added to my personal list of guys who should be main eventers right now which is a small list: HHH, Rock, Austin, Benoit, and Angle. Those are the 5 who have a right to the main title, and to me they shouldn't give a fuck about the lesser belts, just like Angle was ok with Hardy taking the hardcore belt with him a couple shows ago. I don't remember this era at all so my hopes/wishes/dreams are that the Rock opens up the following Raw by wiping his ass with the WCW title belt and then throwing it into a volcano, forever vacating the title, therefore eliminating WCW title matches forever. Then next week they can do the same with the WCW US belt. Edge with the IC is fine. He needs a major title as he's been KOTR for 2 months. And the Undertaker and Kane are fine to have both tag team belts. Those guys have been tag champs off and on. I'm just glad Kanyon no longer has a title. I hope the two tag belts become unified and then get placed on a real tag team before the next PPV. I don't think xpac should hold any belts at this point in his career. He's had enough tries to be relevant on his own and it hasn't worked out. I usually hate when belts get held for one night only and lost on the following Raw, but I hope Tajiri takes both belts back from xpac soon, so the belts can be unified or one can get destroyed. Really an average PPV, was hoping for something better based on the ratings."

The Brothers of Destruction killed any momentum the show might have had with a really long squash match. Overall it isn't a show I'd be excited to watch again, however if it was on, that would be fine."

[5.0] "There is a lot of good stuff on this show, but also the middle part is a mess and the main event disappointed me a little. The best match is undoubtedly Austin vs Angle with Kurt giving us a hell of a babyface performance and Austin being fantastic in his heel role. Other than that Edge vs Storm is fine and X-Pac vs Tajiri was enjoyable, plus both 6-Man Tag and Jericho vs Rhyno weren't bad. But then RVD and Hardy have a sequel to their Invasion match, but this time they make an absolute joke of a Ladder Match with none of them trying to climb the thing and they just do dumb, illogical spots throughout the whole bout. Also there's the bonafide burial of poor DDP that goes for too long anyway and you can't really enjoy it since biker Taker is involved and he has to portray himself as an absolute badass Moxley style. And then the main event isn't awful, but they spent so much time outside of the ring that I lost interest. Both Rock and Booker can work, but Dwayne couldn't look himself in the mirror if he didn't go for a stupid brawl. So overall not a bad PPV with one great match and a few decent ones, but it was a mixbag."

I also apparently really liked the opener, but I watched that like two months ago so I don't really remember it all that well now tbh. The rest of the card was alright I guess, but didn't really hold my interest very well. I also thought the main event would be a lot better on paper so that match and the whole show under delivered for me to be honest."

I really like the story line of the invasion even though some may not the highlights of the night are austin vs angle in a classic match the ladder match but the rest of the card is pretty good as well the only match that I would consider not good is the steel cage match. The thing keeping this from a ten is that some of the matches weren't the best and that kept it from being a top tier summerslam but I still think it is great."

The ladder match between Hardy/RVD was really good, and Austin/Angle had one of the best singles matches in WWE/F history. Rock/Booker T was a pretty pain by the numbers WWF title match at this time period but I still enjoyed it. Matches from best to worst: Angle/Austin ****3/4 , Hardy/RVD ****, Booker/Rock ***1/2 , Tajiri/X-Pac ***1/4 , Edge/Storm ***1/4 , 6 man tag ***, Jericho/Rhyno **1/2, Tag title match 1/2*"

[9.0] "One of the better Summerslam events out there. The strongest match on the card was without a doubt Steve Austin vs Kurt Angle and this really brought at the best in both men and arguably one of Austin's best performances as a heel while Angle fully transitioned into an unlikely babyface because of his connection with the fans. It was one of the most brutal and intense matches and probably one of my favourites even with the screwy finish. Rock v Booker T was good, but was the wrong choice for the main event spot in my opinion. Edge also had at that time one of his best singles matches against the underrated Lance Storm with seeds further planted for his split with Christian. RVD vs Jeff Hardy in a ladder match was awesome, but had a clumsy finish and most of the show was great fun and close to a 10 had it not also been for that horrific burial of DDP in the tag team cage match."

[5.0] "As I've come to expect with early 00s WWF, quite a few of midcard and undercard matches were much better than the main draws of the 2 world heavyweight title matches. Storm vs Edge was a generically structured heel-champ-vs-babyface-challenger match, but it at least had good power from Storm, good agility from Edge, and good chemistry between them. ***. Spike & APA vs Test & The Dudley Boyz was fine -- quite good before it prematurely ended. There was a nicely dominant beatdown on Spike, with him being impressively ragdolled around the ring. Bradshaw showed good power and intensity in his hot tag. Interference at the end was a let-down. **1/2. Tajiri vs X-Pac was a good speedy junior-style match. Tajiri had some great strikes and agile/high-flying attacks, and X-Pac was decent too. Good chemistry and creativity in their exchanges. Shame about the interference. ***. Rhyno vs Jericho was meh. Rhyno's monster work was decent, and Jericho was a fun agile babyface in response, but there was no real intensity or creativity, and it went way too long. **1/2. Jeff vs RVD was a good spotfest and easily MOTN. It featured the same trappings as most ladder matches, but it still had some good high-flying attacks mixed well with some creative and rather risky ladder spots. ***1/4. Taker & Kane vs DDP & Kanyon was a heatless squash with low-effort brawling and incredibly generic cage spots. DDP and Kanyon got absolutely nothing here, instead being heavily dominated nonstop. This felt like a big waste of time, plus a big waste of a traditionally important match stipulation. *3/4. Austin vs Angle was another overkill soap opera, as WWF was best known for producing in this period. Just throw any big stars together, have them brawl, bleed, and hit a million finishers, and that was expected to be adequate. This was at least entertaining for how shallow for was. **1/2. Booker vs Rock featured a good pace but not much in terms of creativity. It eventually devolved into some generic brawling and some less energetic exchanges back in the ring. There was more overbooking with Shane's interferences, even after APA first made the save. Again, big signature moves and especially finishers here were treated as minor inconveniences that could be easily no-sold seconds later. This was still better than Austin vs Angle just because it still wasn't as immensely overkill and brawl-heavy as that, and most of the overkill stuff here was at least well delivered and got great reactions, but this still isn't the sort of thing I look for in my wrestling. **3/4"

[5.0] "Came so close to being a great show but just kept falling short. The brilliant and intense Stone Cold vs Kurt Angle match was marred by a screwy DQ finish, which for a top 4 show isn't acceptable in my opinion. The surprisingly average main event of The Rock vs Booker T struggled to follow it, obviously being put on last to end the show on a babyface title change and took away any unpredictability of the result. It had it's own problems with Shane McMahon's constant interference, even a brutal clothesline from hell apparently couldn't even keep him down. RVD vs Jeff Hardy in no way hit the heights of ladder matches from this era or even the match the two had at Invasion, with a poorly structured spotfest and a big botch in the lead up to the finish. Lets not even mention that cage match... Lots of potential let down by poor booking, just like the Invasion storyline itself."

Tajiri vs X-Pac was the second best match on the show, whilst the ladder match was a good spotfest, although I have always found multi man ladder matches more entertaining. Elsewhere Jericho vs Rhyno was surprisingly the low point on what was a solid undercard, whereas the main event was very average by big 4 PPV main event standards."

The only issue with this show is the first 3 matches all had interferences most of which weren't needed and took away from the match and also the squash cage match however it did make sense for the storyline but the stalker thing never should have happened to begin with though seeing undertaker and Kane in a cage match was still entertaining.
