[7.0] "Underrated show, undercard is solid if unspectacular, I quit match is memorable for many reasons and is one of the best matches in wwf 1999, Rumble match instead may lack star power but was pretty decent with the ending setting up Wrestlemania main event nicely."

[1.0] "Rock Vs Mankind I Quit in spite of its brutal ending was real fantastic, but Shamrock Vs Gunn was weak, X-PAC Vs Gangrel and Bossman Vs Dogg were both really bad, Sable Vs Luna strap match and the royal rumble match are both horrible and Vince winning the rumble was the all time worst in Royal Rumble history and a complete waste of time. Overall WWF Royal Rumble (1999) is an awful show thanks to its weak undercard, namesake match and booking."

[6.0] "Rock v Mankind is the only thing that brings this up. Yes, the ending is absolutely painful to watch, but it's still a brilliant match. The rest of the matches just feel like filler though, with underdeveloped storylines. The Royal Rumble itself is pretty dull, which is par for the course for these large matches, but this time in particular it's all about Austin v Vinnie Mac so there's little interest from the crowd too."

[3.0] "overall a very weak card with one bright spot, namely the savage brawl between the rock and mankind. that said i still have to ding it a couple points for the disgusting chair shots which the rock allegedly went into business for himself on. not to mention the horrible finish to that match that could have only been vomited onto the page by vince russo. wwe gets, and rightfully so, complaints nowadays about short cards. if they ran a show with only one match worth caring about that also had a huge downside, there might be riots in the streets."

[6.0] "The Royal Rumble match itself had similar Russo booking to the Survivor Series PPV so that is going to divide opinion as that show did, but for me personally I thought the McMahon vs Austin stuff was entertaining and McMahon's cheap win was a memorable finish so it had its moments, but the action outside of that was very poor and honestly if you skip the parts of the match between Austin's ambush and his return late into the match you miss practically nothing! The best match on the card by a long way was the controversial Rock vs Mankind I Quit Match, which in my opinion was a masterpiece in storytelling but it's also very hard to watch at the end because of the brutal chair shots Foley is at the receiving end of. The rest of the card was average."

[5.0] "[**1/2] This is not a great edition of the Royal Rumble. Apart from one exception, all the matches are subpar or forgettable. The Royal Rumble match itself is controversial and not the best example of what a match of that kind can bein fact, quite the opposite. The match is essentially one long (though fun) angle for the main Austin/McMahon/The Rock storyline, which makes everyone else feel secondary. On the positive side, The Rock and Mankind have an emotionally intense and physically brutal "I Quit" match for the ages, and the Royal Rumble match is still fun, despite its flaws and controversial winner. While I am not too negative about this edition, as it has its pros, it is also very messy and full of more misses than hits."

[4.0] "Bossman/Road Dogg is an average brawl that went for a bit too long it would've benefited from being no DQ (4/10) Gunn/Shamrock had more wrestling than the opener, Shamrockis cool as a heel and worked the leg pretty well during the match to lead to the tap out. Val Venis coming in was a bit random and the match was a bit overlong too, but bbetter than the opener (5/10) X Pac/Gangrel is a solid little title match with Waltman wrestling circles around the vampire doing a lot of fast paced moves. Theres a botched ref count and its very short (5/10) Sable/Luna is way too short for a strap match, but I think it was as good as it could be with the talent in the ring and the time they had but it wasn't anything too good either. More story progression that match really with Tori attacking Luna (4/10) Rock/Foley is the best match in the card. Great heelwork by Rock on the microphone, Foley takes a nasty bump on the electric equipment and its quite a fun brawl. Thats up until the ending that is hard to watch with so many chairshots to the head. It leaves me a bit conflicted. Might have given it a 10 if I was watching back then but I have to knock down some points knowing how bad the Chairshots were (8/10) The Rumble itself is not very good. The Opening with Vince and Austin is quite nice, but them cutting away to their backstage fight made the match feel pointless. That feeling increases with the amount of lower tier talent involved. Gilberg got a fun elimination but most of the other Jobbers were just making up numbers in the first half. Mabel getting kidnapped by the ministry is a cool angle, just wish it was with a wrestler that wasn't so awful to watch. It picks up later on slightly when Austin and Vince come back and we get a lot more credible wrestlers in the ring. Chyna being in was a cool surprise. McMahon winning just kills it for me in the end though (3/10)"

[6.0] "1999 opens up with a quite enjoyable PPV, but I still don't have high hopes for this year after the horrible 1998, especially since half of the show is obviously the Royal Rumble Match. There are some underneath card matches for the first half and they're not bad at all, but nothing that will get you hooked in for the rest of the PPV. Fortunately the WWF Championship match stands out so you get to the main event with more energy. It's a brutal bout to watch, as Foley gets wrecked once again, but like most of the times it serves its purpose and brings a lot of sympathy towards him, while Rock gets his title back and even more heel heat than before. And then the Royal Rumble Match is all about Vince's and Austin's feud, but it's engaging enough to get you hooked into the whole thing, even though there's not much focus on the other participants. McMahon winning the whole thing isn't something horrendous either, as he was so over as a heel that they could afford to make that decision. You leave the show with wanting his ass to get kicked even more, so they achieved what they wanted to and it was overall an easy watch with Rock vs Mankind being the best thing out of all."

[3.0] "This whole Russo-stained card was a miss. It's just dreadful to sit through today, but the storylines were what it was about back then. Russo's stuff hasn't aged well at all and it's a slog to watch these days. This card is a perfect example of Russorific booking."
Giantfan1980 wrote on 03.09.2022:
[3.0] "We are getting into the 8th level of Attitude Era Hell booking wise by this point in time. Under card is treated as meaningless, overbooked story lines drowning actual action in the ring, and wrestlers not losing clean because of outside forces/story lines mucking up the works. Rock/Mankind was the only thing worth while and that is more for historical analysts on the subject of head injuries these days. Despite the lousy ring work quality and match quality at this time, the crowds were still hotter than anything in the last 20 years possibly! Just a weird time when guys like Russo could get away with this dumb crap (for a little while) and still make money."
Derek Joists wrote on 07.07.2022:
[3.0] "This is right at the height of Russo's reign (or rain) of shit in WWE, leading to some hugely unpleasant storylines that were tasteless at the time and have aged horribly, mostly due to gross sexism. The action isn't much better, with the only decent match having a controversial (to put it mildly) ending."

[5.0] "The Royal Rumble match outside of The Ministry of Darkness kidnapping Mabel, and the Austin/Vince parts were pretty rough. Undercard was fine outside of the women's championship match, although X-Pac Gangrel does have a weird finish because Teddy Long messed up the count. Rock Mankind was awesome and easily the MOTN, one of the best I quit matches ever in general. Matches from best to worst: Rock/Mankind ****½, Shamrock/Gunn ***, X-Pac/Gangrel **½, Rumble match **¼, Bossman/Dogg **, Women match ¾*"

Aldair316 wrote on 27.01.2022:
[0.0] "The excesses of Russos booking drowned the Rumble match in a sea of convoluted muck. Most of the undercarders were sequestered to the first half of the match, creating an unrealistic imbalance. Vince McMahon wins after spending 90 percent of the match as an observer. Despite there being a $100, 000 bounty on Steve Austins head, wrestlers only attack him in randomly-timed portions."

[3.0] "If you're gonna have a show named after a match on the show then said match should be good. Sadly here that wasn't the case. The Rumble itself felt empty and void of being a Rumble with it's lack of in ring action and cutaways to backstage stuff. Rock vs Mankind was MOTN for me. It was brutal and told a great story. The rest of the show was pretty bland."
Burning V Sternness wrote on 19.10.2020:
[3.0] "This show suffers from a poor Rumble match itself and some pretty depressing booking filled with flat finishes where most of the heels win. The Attitude Era was an incredibly successful period for the WWF, and when it's worst excesses were reined in you could get some really good shows. This show is sadly is what could happen when those excesses weren't reined in"

[6.0] "A pretty fun show. There is much weird and questionable stuff but I enjoyed it. Undercard is surprisingly solid enough. First two matches are watchable and Pac vs Gangrel is even pretty good. Womens title one is terrible as how I expected. I quit match is great. This is hard to watch and it can't be called "enjoyable" but it is a very good brawl. One of the most violent matches in history even with only few spots. Royal rumble match is maybe the worst of all time. Sometimes booking is simply horrible. Often a ring has only one wrestler in it and that's very bad for speed of the action. Howewer I don't hate this rumble as some people do. It has its own memorable moments like Chyna entering and Vince's win. Yes, it is very weird decision but at least it is surprising."

[4.0] "The Royal Rumble match is one of the worst, it totally lacks star power for most of the time. The story with Stone Cold and Mr. McMahon is great and a perfect add for the match, but the rest is far from impressive and boring. The Rock vs Mankind is famous but not so good, X-Pac vs Grangel is the best match of the undercard but too short. There is nothing that I enjoyed for this event."

DanTalksRasslin wrote on 04.02.2016:
[4.0] "A somewhat average installment of the Rumble. The undercard contained matches that were mostly solid, but beside the very good Rock-Mankind I Quit match (notable for Rock going way overboard on the chairshots at the end), nothing else really stood out as spectacular. The Rumble itself showcased the rather shallow talent pool in the 1999 WWF midcard with a somewhat lackluster lineup, and while they did a good job of framing the Rumble with the Austin-McMahon feud, it left the other participants with little to do and I don't think many really wanted to see Vince win the whole thing."
Dane Bramage wrote on 03.03.2014:
[7.0] "The undercard was fine, other than the divas match. Didn't expect much from that either though, so wasn't disappointed. Rock v Mankind was a good entertaining match. The Rumble itself was fun, held together by the match-long storyline of McMahon versus Austin. You can see from it though that the WWF roster wasn't very deep at this time, there were a lot of wrestlers in the Rumble just to make up the numbers (Droz, Singh, Kurrgan, Golga, Meanie, etc. )."
eldenaaaaa wrote on 02.02.2014:
[6.0] "Hard to accurately judge. The undercard is mediocre. Rock-Foley is a awesome, but as usual the show lives or dies with the rumble match. The 99 Rumble match is definitely acquired taste, and if you weren’t a fan of the period, you will probably think it sucks. It’s dated as hell and is a microcosm of the Attitude era, but I loved the rumble match itself warts and all and that's mostly what the rating is for (the rumble and Rock-Foley). Your mileage will totally vary."
