[2.0] "King of the Ring 1997 was a event that for me was lame, sucks. Most of the matches were bad for me, out of the Steve Austin vs Shawn, and the final of Triple H vs Mankind, the rest was bad. 2/10"
[5.0] "A very weak KOTR event. Of course, there have certainly been worse, but this is barely an average show. For a Big Five WWF PPV, this really doesn't make the cut. Austin/Michaels is the only above average match, and even then, I didn't find that to be outstanding. The rest of the card just kind of floats on by without leaving much of an impact at all. There is nothing worth going out of your way to see from this event. And even as a whole event it isn't that good. Still, you can do worse. At the very least, it winds up being passable."
[6.0] "The only legit great match on this PPV was HBK/Stone Cold and everything else was pretty bad. The six-man tag was alright, I suppose. King of the Ring as never a great show anyway, outside of the first one. It's a tournament show. ZZZZZZZZ."
[5.0] "There's one really good match in this PPV that's definitely worth watching and that's Austin vs HBK which was the match of the night by far. Aside from that the final of the King Of The Ring was nice, even if it starts slow it gets good towards the end. The semi-finals were ok, HHH vs Ahmed was nothing special but Mankind vs Jerry Lawler was fun. Goldust vs Crush was definitely the worst match of the night, there was literally zero build up to this and it was a very slow paced match. The tag team match was alright and to be honest i got surprised when The Hart Foundation got the win. The main event of this show was weak, Undertaker's main story was that he was being blackmailed from Paul and The Nation Of Domination were kinda falling apart since Crush and Savio Vega were fighting all the time and that made the story weak as well. Overall a 5/10 show with a really good Austin vs HBK match and a nice KOTR final match, the rest isn't really worth watching id say."
[5.0] "Here we get one really good match, albeit one with a somewhat questionable ending, in Austin vs. HBK; the finish did at least serve its apparently-intended purpose in making the crowd want more. It would also notably be one of the last big matches Austin would wrestle under his more technical style before his neck injury against Owen Hart two months later would force his style change to more brawling. HHH vs Mankind, with HHH getting his make-up victory from the previous King of the Ring, was also solid, though they would have much better matches later. Otherwise, the rest of the matches were mostly OK, with only Crush vs. Goldust falling on the "bad" side, but none really stood out as anything worth going out of your way for either. An overall middle-of-the-road event."
[6.0] "Unfortunately this show had a weak main event, but this did have a good King of the Ring tournament with a strong HHH vs Mankind final. Austin v Michaels is a great match as well despite the double DQ finish. They put on a wrestling clinic and when it ended everyone wanted to see them go at it again. The 6 man tag was fine with Sycho Sid putting over the Hart Foundation on his way out of the company and there was some fun stuff with the Hart foundation where Austin beats up Brian Pillman and flushed his head down the toilet and then later the Harts issue a challenge for the Canadian Stampede PPV (that show was amazing btw). It's an okay PPV, but it's nothing special."
[5.0] "Another mid PPV to add to the list. The Pre Show match is not worth seeking out. Very dull and unimportant (3/10) Hunter/Johnson is a TV level match at best Crowd was into Ahmed but its not great (4/10) Mankind/Lawler begins with two solid promos, but some dull wrestling at first. It starts picking up a little by the end with Piledrivers and Foley countering the Roll Up into the Mandible claw (5/10) Goldust/Crush is another incredibly dull match without much to say (3/10) The Six Man tag is decent in bursts but it wasn't anyones best performance. Owen held the wrestling together and Sid had charisma and energy as always even if he messed up the finish slightly (5/10) Hunter/Mankind much like Foley's previous match starts off slow and starts picking up with more bumps later on in the match. This one felt a little more violent than the semi final match. Also Ode to Joy is a great theme song (6/10) Austin/HBK is the best match of the night. Stone Cold still wrestled a more technical style pre injury and Shawn was very fast paced. A lot of great counters and the action felt heated. The finish is a little underwhelming but well executed (8/10) Taker/Faarooq is a drag of a Main Event outside of one Taker dive. The Paul Bearer blackmail story was more interesting than anything in ring but its not the worst in the card (4/10)"
[5.0] "A mid PPV with one absolute banger and some okay stuff or just plain bad. Hunter and Johnson opened the show with a nice match heavily dependent on the crowd's reaction that was incredibly hot for Ahmed. Mankind and Lawler had an alright bout with Jerry showing some classic heel tactics. Goldust vs Crush was okay when Dustin was in control, but once Hawaian put on an endless Camel Clutch it killed the crowd. Then we had a fun 6-Man Tag with The Hart Foundation that has been fantastic so far, plus it's always nice to watch Sid being the most over guy in the ring and him just enjoying the fans' support. Then the tournament final was a disappointment, as they had to work a 20 minute match and none of these guys are technical geniuses, so apart from the closing moments nothing really stood out. Michaels vs Austin was phenomenal and I really enjoyed the whole thing. Fantastic technical contest with some strong characters, where both wrestlers made everything look effortless - great match with a finish that made the fans want more. And then the main event that had to follow the previous masterpiece and had no heat because of that. Slow and boring match with The Undertaker continuing one of the worst world title reigns in WWF up to this point."
[6.0] "Die erste Hälfte war relativ langweilig. Und die Matches hier vermutlich sogar. Die ersten drei hat exakt die gleiche Matchstruktur. Die folgenden Matches wurden dann etwas länger und auch eindeutig besser. Der Co Main Event hier ganz klar Match of the Night. Der Event, war dann hingegen etwas enttäuschend"
[8.0] "Really liked this show, a couple of matches they didn't need but an enjoyable 6 man tag, a better KOTR final than some of them and a great match between Michaels and Austin"
[5.0] "Eine ziemich durchschnittliche Show, die einen sehr schweren Start hat. Hunter vs. Ahmed war noch okay, da es recht kurz war. Mankind vs. Lawler zieht sich gefühlt extrem, obwohl es nur 10 Minuten waren. Lawler greift auch 4-5 mal in seine Hose und tut so als würde er irgendeinen Gegenstand darin verstecken, mit dem er dann zuschlägt. Das sah so schlecht aus und hat auch keinen Effekt bei den Fans. Goldust vs. Crush war ebenso mies. Hart Foundation vs. Sid & LOD hat mich dann etwas wachrütteln können mit ganz netter Action, fand ich okay. Das Finale des KOTR war ganz ordentlich und hat mir gefallen. HBK vs. Austin bestes Match der Show und sehr ordentlich. Ich denke das Finish, obwohl dämlich, passt hier ausnahmsweise mal rein. Main Event ist solide würde ich sagen. Der Undertaker ist noch lange nicht auf dem Level, welches er später erreichte und Farooq war jetzt auch nicht der Wrestler. War in Ordnung aber nicht mehr."
"I thought I'd be disappointed in Austin vs. HBK because of the messy ending but overall I think it was perfect to maintain both of their auras and progress their feud/relationship as tag champs, and it was easily the highlight/best match of the night. Taker vs. Faarooq was stupid. HHH vs Mankind was stupid: he doesn't look good needing Chyna to win every single match for him. I don't care if it's getting him "heat, " he looks like a loser."
[4.0] "Pretty weak show overall, with only one match that was above average - and even that was spoiled by a stupid ending. Apart from the opener nothing was awful, and it was fairly watchable most of the way through, but definitely a blip on the upward trend of the year."
[4.0] "OK show but not much really happened here. HHH vs Mankind started out slow but picked up towards the end. Austin vs HBK is the only reason you should watch this show if you decide to. Really stupid ending with Ahmed giving the plunge to Undertaker"
[5.0] "Habe mir die Show nun mal in Gänze angeschaut, nachdem ich zuvor nur das Turnierfinale, sowie das Austin/Michaels Match kannte und muss feststellen, dass die anderen Matches auch keines weiteren Blickes würdig sind. Das Turnier geht noch ok los, wobei beide Matches keine Bäume ausreißen, vor allem das Mankind/ Lawler Match ging mir zu lang. Crush gegen Goldust war uninteressant und das 6 Men Tag hatte ein paar unsaubere Moves dabei, auch wenn es das erste Match war, das die Zuschauer vor Ort interessierte. Das Turnierfinale braucht etwas Anlaufzeit und wird insgesamt vom Publikum ignoriert, allerdings entwickelt sich mMn ein wirklich gutes Match daraus mit zunehmender Matchdauer, dem ich nach mehrmaligen Sehen aufgrund des gelungenen Aufbaus noch immer einiges abgewinnen kann. Michaels und Austin weisen in ihrem Match ihre jeweilige Extraklasse nach, bis zum Finish, mit dem ich leben kann, weil hier keiner der beiden verlieren soll, der Mania Main Event steht dabei wahrscheinlich schon fest. Zum Abschluss gibt es noch einen klaren Sieg des Takers über Farooq, das bewegt sich auf ähnlich schwachem Niveau wie der Main Event von WM 13, geht aber immerhin etwas kürzer. Mit Ausnahme der beiden herausgestellten Matches, sollte man diese Show überspringen."
[4.0] "Das Turnier beginnt schon langsam und kommt dann auch nicht recht in Fahrt, während das Finale hingegen dann wiederum ganz ansprechend rüberkommt. Die Partie zwischen HBK und Austin ist bis auf das Finish okay, welches wiederum den Gesamteindruck gehörig versaut und Diskussionsstoff liefert. Und zum Ausbau der Kane-Story hätte man den Main-Event nicht unbedingt dermassen verbooken müssen, zumal allen klar sein sollte, dass Simmons zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt alles andere als Championshipmaterial darstellt ... in Summe eine nicht zwingend sehenswerte Veranstaltung, zumal auch die Filler nur bedingt funktionieren."
[5.0] "Boring and forgettable show. Opener is bad, ending is stupid. I didn't really like Lawler vs Mankind too. Goldust vs Crush is just horrible. Tag team match is not great but I enjoyed it. Hunter vs Mankind is slow but brutal fight. Pedigree on the table is awesome. Those guys have steel cage match on that years SummerSlam. I think it will be great. Shawn vs Stone Cold is an excellent match. I think that ending is not that bad because nobody needed the win. Main event is very boring and overbooked. Ahmed Johnson as title contender is horrible idea."
[5.0] "Another boring ppv in my opinion, nothing really stood out to me outside of HBK vs Austin. HHH vs Mankind was decent and main event was nothing special really"
[5.0] "Ein PPV der nicht wirklich glänzen konnte, aber auch nichts bot, weshalb man sich an den Kopf fassen musste. Der Opener war nicht gerade gut und das Finish etwas antiklimatisch. HHH ist auch heute technisch nicht unbedingt ein hervorragender Wrestler, aber hier war er noch extrem langweilig im Ring. Mankind vs. Lawler war schon besser, was aber nur an der Tatsache lag, dass Foley auch hier schon wie ein verrückter hin und her gebumpt ist. Goldust gegen Crush sollte man skippen und das große Six Man Tag konnte bis auf ein paar nette Tags und die letzten 2 Minuten auch nicht viel bieten, war aber noch vollkommen in Ordnung. HHH vs. Mankind war das 2. beste Match bei diesem KOTR, aber auch nicht sehr überzeugend aufgrund des Bookings und Michaels vs. Austin litt unter dem Problem beide nicht verlieren lassen zu können, weshalb es kein Finish geben durfte. Es war trotzdem ein gutes Match und ohne Zweifel das MOTN. Der Main Event war besser als erwartet, aber kann dem PPV am Ende auch keine bessere Duftnote verleihen."
[3.0] "This event sucked. Okay, that's a little harsh. I'm just starting to resent having to right a review for all of these things I rate so differently -- haha. It was a pretty bleh event, though. Shawn Michael vs. Steve Austin is worth a watch, even though it ends in a DQ -- pffft. Other than that, I'm not a fan."
[6.0] "It's hard to see some hype for this event. The semifinals matches of the tournament were just as expected. Jerry Lawler had a nice pre-match promo. The final round was solid, but not a classic or a must-see. Steve Austin vs Shawn Michaels was another good match between two fan favorites. Undertaker vs Faarooq wasn't exciting, it was a time for changing in the Nation of Domination. The 3 vs 3 match was acceptable. Not the best King of the Ring but a watchable one."
[5.0] "Die beiden Semi Finals fand ich persönlich nicht so prickelnd und mit Goldust vs. Crush folgt ein Match, das die Spannung nicht wirklich hebt.. Das Six Man Tag bietet da schon mehr mit der Hart Foundation die einfach aus 2 guten Wrestlern und Jim Neidhart bestand. Das Finale des KotR ist eigentlich kein wirkliches, da es schon mitten in der Show war, dafür können die Akteure allerdings nichts, und boten eine gute Show. Michaels vs. Austin ist dann wirklich ein klasse Match bei dem es spaß macht es anzusehen. Farooq um den Titel, ich spar mir einen Kommentar. 6 Punkte gebe ich insgesamt, weil einfach bis auf die beiden genannten Matches nichts besonderes war."
[4.0] "1. HHH gegen Johnson war schwach. Immerhin setzte sich der bessere der beiden, wenn auch damals überraschend durch. (1 1/4*) 2. Mankind gegen Lawler war schlecht. Einzig der schleichende Face-Turn Foleys bleibt in Erinnerung. (1*) 3. Goldust gegen Crush war schwach. Warum stand das Match überhaupt auf der Card? (1 1/4*) 4. Hart Foundation gegen LOD & Sid war das erste bessere Match an diesem Abend. Obwohl die LOD aus meiner Sich hier schon über den Zenit war. Überraschenderweise durfte Owen Sid pinnen. (2 3/4*) 5. Das KotR Finale zog sich wie Kaugummi. Überhaupt waren die 97er Matches bei weitem nicht so gut wie die Matches im 2000er Jahr. (2 1/2*) 6. HBK gegen Austin ist dann das MotN. Zudem bietet dieses Match gleich einen Moment den ich bis heute nicht vergessen kann. Hätte das Match nicht dieses bescheuerte Finish. Mann wollte keinen der beiden zu diesem Zeitpunkt schwächen. Also warum bookt man das Match jetzt schon. (4*) ME war dann lahm. Alles andere als ein Sieg des Takers wäre eine Überraschung gewesen. Anscheinend plante man Taker gegen Johnson, wie das Aftermath vermuten ließ. Kann mich aber an kein Match der beiden erinnern. (1 1/4*) KotR 1997 war eine schwache Show. Mit nur drei Matches die aus meiner Sicht 2*+ eine Katastrophe. Trotzdem war der CO ME gut, nur hatte dieser ein bescheuertes Finish. Für einen damaligen Big 5 PPV eindeutig zu wenig."
[5.0] "Das war schon eine solide Nummer, die ich irgendwo zwischen fünf und sechs Punkten ansiedeln würde. HHH gegen Mankind ging mir etwas zu lang, war aber gut, was auch für Austin vs. Michaels gilt. Der Rest ging in Ordnung, ohne dass etwas dabei war, was wirklich richtig gut oder erwähnenswert war. Sid haut Live eine Promo ohne Versprecher raus, das ist durchaus bemerkenswert, ha. Undertaker gegen Faarooq war auch okay, stinkt aber gegen die vorherigen beiden Matches etwas ab und war anscheinend nur der Main Event, weil Taker zu der Zeit der Champ war. Unter dem Strich kann sich dieser WWF-PPV aber schon sehen lassen."
[4.0] "Unterdurchschnittlicher PPV mit einer ganz schwachen ersten Hälfte. Alles vor dem KotR-Finale kann man getrost vergessen und ist keiner Erwähnung wert. Das Finale ist dann durchaus ordentlich und bekommt auch erstaunlich viel Zeit. Im Vergleich zu den Schlachten der Beiden die noch folgen sollten, aber eher ein schwächeres Match. Austin gegen HBK war auch in Ordnung ohne wirklich begeistern zu können. Dafür war es über längere Strecken zu langsam. Der Main-Event war dann echt eine Zumutung. Aber das ist man bei der Beteiligung der Nation ja gewohnt. Ich fand dieses Stable nur unfassbar langweilig. Schlechte Midcarder, gepaart mit Jobbern (zumindest bis Rocky dazu kam). Insgesamt kein guter PPV, der nur von HHH, Mankind, Austin und HBK vor einem Totalausfall bewahrt wird."
[6.0] "HHH gewinnt gegen Ahmed, natürlich dank Eingriff von Chyna. Mankind gewinnt gegen Lawler, aber das war auch nichts besonderes. Goldust gegen Crush war gar nichts. Das Six Man Tag war aber ordentlich und hatte eine richtig gute Stimmung. HHH gegen Mankind war als Finale völlig in Ordnung. Michaels gegen Austin war stark. Taker gegen Faarooq war nichts und die Nation scheint sich langsam aufzulösen. Der Taker muss am Ende dann doch wieder auf Bearer hören. Die Show war in Ordnung."
[3.0] "Absolut unter dem Standard der WWF zu diesem Zeitpunkt. Die Undercard war wrestlerisch eine Zumutung. Lawler vs. Mankind war immerhin wichtig für den langsamen Face-Turn von Mankind. Ansonsten: Der gesamte PPV war eeewig langsam. Eeeewig uninspiriert. Tote Halle während der Matches trotz guter Reaktion auf die Faces VOR den Matches. Austin vs. Michaels war gut, aber nicht herausragend. Der Main Event war eine Frechheit. Insgesamt ein fürchterlicher PPV, Mankind klar der Mann des Abends."
[6.0] "This wasn't a bad show. HHH vs. Ahmed Johnson & Mankind vs. Jerry Lawyer were both good matches. Goldust and Crush put on an o. k. match. The Hart Foundation vs. L. O. D. & Sid was entertaining enough. Next up was Mankind vs. HHH for the King of the Ring. A solid match from these two. It would have gotten a higher rating from me, if it wasn't full of spots that Mick Foley had been doing for years. Was almost a "greatest hits of Cactus Jack" match. Entertaining enough for 3 Stars, and still one of the better KotR finals matches. Then HBK vs. Austin, I don't get the hype behind this match. It went on way too long to end with such a stupid finish. The end completely ruined it. And finally Undertaker vs. Faarooq put on a decent enough match to be a main event. The story of what secret Paul Bearer had over Undertaker was more important than the match though. An average 6 of 10 from me."
[5.0] "Austin vs HBK war gut. Die restlichen Matches waren eher solide bis schwach. Vor allem der Main Event mit Faarooq war seltsam. Insgesamt eine schwache 3 als Note für diesen PPV."
[5.0] "Sicherlich kein Highlight in der Geschichte des King of the Rings. Lawler und Ahmed Johnson sind sicherlich keine verdienten Teilnehmer in einem Halbfinale, wenn auch gerade Letzterer zum damaligen Zeitpunkt richtig over war. Hunter holt sich den Sieg und die königlichen Insignien, nur um sie dann auf Mankind zu zertrümmern. Damals hatte der spätere "Game" noch die Hilfe Chynas nötig. Das World Heavyweight Title Match war schwach, aber das war mit Teilnehmer Ron Simmons/Faarooq zu erwarten. Schade, dass das Match zwischen Michaels und Austin so übel enden musste. Hat sich da wieder jemand geweigert, den Job zu machen? Das Six Man Tag Team Match war durchaus ansehbar; leider hat Owen das Finish verbockt."
[6.0] "Kein sonderlich spektakulärer PPV. Zwei gute Matches mit HHH vs Mankind und Michaels vs Austin. Letzteres ist dabei das bessere Match der Beiden. Historisch dabei sicherlich interessant, dass mit diesem PPV der Aufstieg von HHH langsam Fahrt aufnimmt und auch das Publikum langsam anfängt besser auf ihn zu reagieren. Gleiches kann man wohl auch von Foley sagen, der hier zum ersten Mal fast komplett als Face angenommen wird, wobei Foley ja auch schon vorher im Main Event präsent war. Der Rest des PPVs ist reichlich unspektakulär, wobei das Six Man Tag Match noch ganz unterhaltsam ist und der Hauptkampf mit Blick auf das Auftauchen Kanes durchaus seine Berechtigung hat."
[5.0] "Ein PPV der mir nicht besonderlich gut gefallen hat, das Match von Shawn Michaels vs. Steve Austin war soweit ganz ok, nur das es in einem Double DQ endete was nen bisschen blöd! Hunter Hearts Helmsley vs. Mankind war auch ganz gut mit einem doch verdientem Sieger, der Rest der Matches waren doch eher schwach!"
[6.0] "Ganz ok der PPV. Bestes Match war klar Austin vs HBK, gutes Match. Leider mit einem scheiß Finish. Das KOTR Finale war auch ganz ok, etwas zu lang fand ich. Die üblichen Matches waren eher schwach bis solide. Der Main Event war nicht so der Bringer. Noch ne 3 für diesen Event."
[4.0] "Das war gar nix. Ganz langweiliges Turnier und unglaubwürdiger Herausforderer im Main Event. Der einzige Lichtblick war das geniale Match zwischen Austin und HBK"
[4.0] "Ich weiß nicht wieso, aber beim King of the Ring Turnier an sich ist bei mir der Funke nie übergesprungen. Das WWF Title Match kann man so stehen lassen, nur warum im Main Event? Da wäre Austin vs Michaels besser gekommen, aber ok."
[4.0] "Die ersten 3 Matches kann man getrost vergessen. Tag Team Match ordentlich. Dann das King of the Ring Finale als sehr sehenswertes Match obwohls sicher noch besser gegangen wäre. Michaels Austin auch sehr stark aber mit dem wohl mit miesesten Ende aller Zeiten. Nichtmal so schlimm, dass es keinen Sieger gab aber wenn dann doch bitte eher durch Double KO. Das wär noch irgendwie l0gisch gewesen. Das Undertaker Match war leider als ME verfehlt. Vielleicht wußte die WWE aber auch einfach, dass das Finish im Michaels/Austin Match als Abschluß des Abends nicht gut angekommen wäre."
[6.0] "Ansehnliche Show mit Höhepunkten (HBK vs. Austin, HHH vs. Mankind, Six Men Tag Team) aber auch Tiefpunkten (Main Event, Goldust vs. Crush, die beiden ersten Matches). Für die Show spricht, dass man Michaels gegen Austin unbedingt mal gesehen haben sollte. Das King of the Ring Finale und die Fehde mit Mankind leutet außerdem langsam den Aufstieg von Triple H ein."
[6.0] "Seltsame Wahl des Main Events, aber ansonsten war die Show ganz solide. Goldust vs Crush war der obligatorische Ausrutscher nach unten, wurde aber durch Austin vs Michaels wieder gut gemacht."
[6.0] "Der Main Event war selbst damals schwach, brachte jedoch den nächsten Schritt in der Undertaker-Paul Bearer-Kane-Story mit sich. Das KOTR Finale schlägt das erste Michaels-Austin-Match als MOTN, alleine schon, weil es ein klares Finish hatte. HBK, der erst wenige Wochen vorher zurückgekehrt und mit Austin Tag Team Champion geworden war, sollte nach der Show eine weitere Auszeit einnehmen und weigerte sich hier erneut zu verlieren. Geheimtipp ist das Six Man Tag Match mit der Rückkehr von Sid."
