This show was fine to really good, fairly consistent card throughout but not the best show of the tour by any means."
[7.0] "Ah, first night of New Japan Cup and it really only makes sense to review the actual New Japan matches. I liked the Juice/Yujiro match, they both so good in their roles - Juice the fiery, energetic babyface and Yujiro the grimy, douchebag heel. and I think it's good that Yujiro has these matches where he can show some competency as a singles guy. ***1/2 A big hoss fight in this one, I loved their 2015 G1 match and this one wasn't on par, but still really enjoyable. Thank goodness, Ishii doesn't have a neck because he landed right on it with that Avalanche Razor's Edge spot. Goodness. I loved Ishii's resilience this whole match. Suprised Elgin won, given how toxic (IRL) and cold (in-ring) he's been but ah still a solid match with a fun last 10."
[8.0] "Smooth first show of this years New Japan Cup. Juice vs Yujiro was a pretty good match showing Yujiro can still put in good effort when he wants to, ***3/4. Elgin vs Ishii was completely overkill, but still an insane match, ****3/4."
[6.0] "Another over the top Elgin borefest. Same let's just keep going and going and going like his matches with Naito and Omega last year. overkill to the max."
[8.0] "The two matches that really matter were really good. Juice vs Yujiro impressed me. Takahashi had an outstanding performance, and Robinson was great again. It was Ishii vs Elgin that stole the show, though. Ishii is great, we all know that, but, sometimes, we forget how good Elgin is. This last year wasn't a good one for him outside the ring, but when we put that aside he is one of the best in the world. MOTY contender for me."
