Michaels/Santana is also a good one, Taker/Roberts is mediocre in terms of wrestling, but it's a clash of two legendary gimmicks. The second half is completely skippable and the main event is not like THIS awful, but the match still looks like a joke being put on a place it doesn't deserve. 5/10"

[7.0] "This is a Mania of two halves. The first half of the show is really good. Two all time great matches with Piper/Hart and Savage/Flair with the rise of the new guard with Taker/HBK/Bret all getting the rub over the old guard of Tito/Piper/Jake. It looked like we were on track to a fantastic Mania. But then after the World title match, it quickly goes down hill. Random matches that looked like they belonged on Superstars (Owen/Skinner & Model/Tatanka) ruined the flow of the show. The awful tag title match with pretty much two heel teams waiting it out until the count out finish. And then Hogan and Sid stink out the arena with their main event that ends in a DQ...in the main event...of WrestleMania...YIKES! ? If you had just watched until the Savage/Flair match, it would be an all-time Mania. That's not the case however and the two halves together make for an average to good show. I'll will give it a bonus point for all the great gimmicks that were on the show (LOD, Repo, Flair, Luger drinking, Sid, etc.) and the awesome Heenan/Gorilla pairing having one of their better nights together,"

[10.0] "This was my first time ever attending a wrestling event and it had to be a WrestleMania. But this was before WM became the spectacle it's become. But this one was a really good one. You can see the transition here from the old school wrestlers to the newer generation. In fact, you could see that all year long but it truly started here. Rumble 92 was still the old school wrestling but here was where the door opened. Hogan's final WM main event that was announced and the promotion leading up to it was top notch. Bret and Piper was a five star match, Savage and Flair was a five star match. The rest of the event was so much fun. But being there was an experience I'll never forget and that's why this event is rated top notch for me."

[6.0] "Wrestlemania VIII is, like a lot of the old Wrestlemanias, has a very average-below average card, but has some surprisingly decent matches, the duel between Roddy Piper and Bret Hart was very fun and had good technical wrestling in it, and the Macho Man's match with Ric Flair was very fun as well. The main event cannot be ignored however, a match between Hulk Hogan and Sid Justice, already containing underwhelming in-ring work, but the elephant in the room is that it was the main event, and Sid ended up losing by disqualification. What an anticlimactic ending made to satisfy the ego of Hulk Hogan, it almost foreshadowed the abysmal ending of the upcoming Wrestlemania IX. Overall, it was a decent event, with two very fun matches, but dragged down by a bad ending and the mediocrity of early Wrestlemanias."

niclasobrovac wrote on 14.04.2025:
[5.0] "The first thing that needs to be praised about Wrestlemania 8 is the fact that it reduces the amount of matches stuffed into its runtime, which immediately allows for much better flow and pacing. Despite that, this is a Two Match show heavily hurt by its disaster of a main event. If you only look at the first 5 of 9 matches, this would be tremendous! The opener was good, The Undertaker match was acceptable, Hart vs Piper was an instant classic, and while the Tag Team match sucked, it was a serviceable filler in between the IC Title and World Title match, which saw Randy Savage and Ric Flair steal the show. Everything afterwards is straight up BAD. Two matches that are too short to rate, a really bad Tag Team Title match, and a main event that to this day reigns amongst the worst of all time. Its a show that has to be split into two halves, and I think that is exactly why meeting in the middle of the rating scale seems fair and reasonable. Yes, the two classics deserve to have a higher rating, and maybe their existence should put this show ranking onto a six, but the awful booking surrounding the Main Event can sadly not be ignored and heavily drags down the overall enjoyment and experience of the show. Some of the best and worst Wrestlemania could offer."

Alas, we had to endure some drab shit after that which we can't ignore, culminating in one of the worst main events I've ever seen with Hogan's ego in maximum overdrive and a fucked up finish to cap it off. Although the Warrior return bailed it out somewhat, as everyone in attendance seemed to forget about what they'd witnessed in the previous 10 minutes."

[3.0] "It hurts so bad to watch Piper, Bret, Savage and Flair work their asses off only to get screwed into mid-card matches so Hogan could "shine" again in the main event. This card is less about what it is and more about what it could have been. Bret vs Piper is great, Savage vs Flair is great, Hogan vs Sid is so bad. Just imagine if this card was Hogan vs Flair and Savage vs Bret. That sounds amazing but unfortunately we were instead given the gift of a botched DQ finish in the main event of Wrestlemania."
SpecialAgentCooper wrote on 22.09.2024:
[8.0] "Getting the obvious out of the way first, yes: the main event is bad. There are also a few bad filler matches, as every WrestleMania had (at minimum) in this era. However, far more importantly, this card features two of the most brilliantly worked and all-time great storytelling matches of the Golden Era with the IC and World Heavyweight bouts, two matches that I truly believe both belong in the very small handful of legit 5* bangers from the entire 1985-1992 era. No other PPV to this point has been able to claim more than one of these all-time matches, so yes, this is a great show whose multiple legendary matches easily outweigh a bit of filler garbage and a whatever main event. Honestly, if you were to just take the horrible 8 man tag match out of the mix and swap the card position of the Hogan and Savage matches, this whole thing probably flows much better into a 9 or 10/10 type event with minimal real drag periods. Bobby Heenan was beyond funny all night, heavily elevating my enjoyment with his commentary. Consider this, even within three of the other much less heralded matches, we get to see three of the greatest wrestlers of all time, with Shawn Michaels, Owen Hart and The Undertaker. This was the best WrestleMania yet at its time by a pretty sizable margin, in my eyes."

I can't in my right mind give a good score to a show main evented to that disastrous Hogan/Sid match with one of the worst botched finishes I've ever seen. Everything after Flair and Savage absolutely stinks, and the opening matches are fine but nothing special enough to put this over the top."

Hogan vs Sid is worse than Hogan Slaughter, the Tag titles match was a slog, and we really didn't need an Owen Hart squash of Skinner. Best part of the second half is actually Tatanka vs Rick Martel. Real shame because Piper vs Hart and Savage vs Flair are two of the best Golden Era matches, Tito vs Michaels is fun, and I even like Roberts vs Taker."

[7.0] "It's a testament to how much I enjoy Piper vs. Hart and Savage vs. Flair that I've still given this show a 7.0, because boy does it end with a whimper. The first couple of hours are pretty good (not all of the matches are great, but those that aren't still feel purposeful and at least have some sort of redeeming factor to them), but the card placement really killed their momentum for that final hour or so. It was very difficult for anybody else to follow Flair and Savage, and having three matches in between them and Sid vs. Hogan just caused the show to drag at the end (even though a short overall run time prevents things from getting too bad on that front). The main event is an absolute mess, and the botched finish is disastrous and in no way how you want to close a PPV, let alone WrestleMania, and the big return from the Ultimate Warrior is not enough to save it. Still, the IC and World Title matches are both classics, and definitely two of the best matches that fans had seen at WrestleMania at this point in the show's history, so I think it'd be overly harsh to drop my rating any lower than this. I don't think there is any need to watch the show in its entirety unless you're a completionist, but I'd still consider this to be a good installment of WrestleMania even with some very heavy flaws - although I do wonder how much more negative my experience would have been if I went into the show live and didn't have the benefit of knowing what to expect with the main event well in advance."

sinfony wrote on 04.12.2023:
"An incredible show from a historical perspective alone, as it marks the end of the Golden Era: being the last huge arena show built around Hogan facing off against the latest threat to Hulkamania. In truth, Hulk was already becoming passé by this time (his elimination at the Rumble was cheered by a sizable number and they had to dub in boos later), but Vince stuck determinedly by his golden ticket, even subsequently begging him to return to give the following year's WM the fireworks and posing finale rather than put his faith truly in the "new generation" and let Bret go over against Yokozuna. Hogan's match with Sid is appalling and somewhat fittingly ends in a totally bodged finish that leaves Harvey Wippleman having to force a DQ when Papa Shango doesn't arrive on time. A strange booking even if it had been properly executed as there seems no motivation at all for Shango to become involved in a Hogan-Sid clash. They obviously wanted Hogan outnumbered and taking a beating from two heels to allow warrior to make his big surprise return and save Hogan, but Shango was a very random choice and makes an already poor match end in pure farce. As most other commenters have noted the event has two huge high points in the World title and IC title bouts, which are both outstanding matches. You can take your pick which one is better and there's no wrong answer; personally I enjoyed the Piper/Bret one slightly more, especially for the fantastically inventive finish (particularly compared to the rather meh finish of Savage/Flair) and Bret blading brings an added intensity (I always thought that Flair watched these guys tear it up and so decided to blade too - for which he got fined afterward as he didn't manage do it quite as covertly). It's also the best match of Piper's career for my money and the psychology he uses throughout is masterful. Strangely, the Savage/Flair contest was so built around the Elizabeth being Ric's ex (and him having the pictures to prove it) angle that the title almost seems secondary, but the match flows very well and the two combine to excellent effect, albeit they had supposedly rehearsed fairly extensively which was a rarity at the time - kudos should also go to Mr Perfect who pulls off his role *excuse the pun* perfectly with his continual interference and throwing the knuckle duster right into the palm of Flairs hand on the ref's blind side. For me it's always been a real missed opportunity of the the WWF that they got so little mileage out of Flair, just one real year of PPV matches and then he was gone... and Vince relegating Savage to commentator was another utter misjudgement.... Of the rest of the card, the opening match in Michaels vs Tito Santana is probably the one other bout really worth of a mention as a wrestling contest and it's particularly interesting to watch knowing how Michaels would ascend from this first WM solo outing, but Tito was a more than competent opponent that gives him a good sparring partner here. Taker vs Jake is decent too, and the match had been built well over the weeks with some masterful promos from Jake, though I felt the contest a little crash, bang, wallop and over in barely 6 minutes, when they could have had it ebb and flow a little more. The two tag matches are flops. The 8-man was only ever meant to be the (then) typical give some guys a PPV payday affair, as there is no rhyme or reason to the two teams and no heat had been built up. The tag title match had some build but the two teams just didn't seem to work together well and Money Inc simply walking out of the contest rather undermines the whole premise of any heel defending a title, as obviously the dastardly way to always defend your title would just be to accept countout loss after countout loss... but the watching fan would kinda like to see some more interesting end to proceedings than just saying to hell with it and walking backstage. Both teams come out of it looking chumps. Tatanka vs Martel never gets going and the Model schtick was always pretty tiring, particularly as it was so rarely backed up with any arrogance in securing any notable victories. Tatanka is still getting his long undefeated streak push and inevitably gets the pin, lamost out of nowhere, catching Heenan on commentary somewhat cold. Owen Hart vs Skinner is just to waste some minutes before the Hogan match and neither is given any chance to show anything in that time... kinda strange they get this one go on and cut Bulldog vs Berzerker as Bulldog was far more over than Owen or Skinner; four months later Bulldog would be in the main event. All in all, a very interesting show from a historical perspective, offering two fantastic matches worth seeking out."

This show really falls off after the World Title match (which really should've been the main event by the way), but the first half or so of the show is pretty strong. The main event was awful, and I mean of course it was going to be, but Vince couldn't help himself. Roddy Piper had my favourite singular performance of the night here; putting people over clean is something he did rarely and he made Bret look great. I thought Typhoon was really bad on this show. I expected worse from this show."

[7.0] "I really liked it, but I would have loved it if the main event delivered. The opener was great and it was a proper introduction to Michaels' heel character, while Taker vs Roberts was good for what it was and it accomplished what the booker wanted. Then Bret and Roddy knocked it out of the park with their match and absolutely stole the show, at least until two matches later. The 8-Man Tag was nothing special, but it was a nice way to let the people breathe after the IC Title Match and before the WWF Title Match, which was also phenomenal with Flair and Savage putting on a classic fight. After that though it was disappointing with the Tag Team Title Match having the awful finish and the main event being the worst match on the card. It's worth watching especially for Hart vs Piper and Flair vs Savage though - two beautiful pieces of work."

HBK and Tito Santana have a fine opener, Taker/Roberts does what it set out to do, the eight man tag is harmless filler, we get some really good promos from Jake the Snake, Piper, Hart, Savage and Flair. And of course both of the singles title matches are absolute classics that have aged really well. After that the show doesn't keep up the quality. Tatanka/Martel is another watchable filler, Owen/Skinner is absolutely pointless and you might miss it if you go grab a drink with how short it is. However the two big problems that keep this Mania from being more than satisfactory are the Tag Title match and Hogan/Sid both being fairly dull wrestling matches that end with non finishes and a botched one in the case of the Main Event. Overall I still think this was the best Mania up until that point, but its much better if you turn it off after Savage's post match promo"

Tito and HBK with the fun opener, Undertaker is over as anything and has a fine little match with Jake, Bret/Piper is really good, the silly tag isn't for me but we can live with that for now, and finally Savage/Flair is a banger that kicks gear into something special about when Elizabeth shows up. Aaaand then you get a whatever filler match, a crap tag title match with a nothing finish, a squash, and a dud of a main event that totally flubs the finish. The two singles titles matches really are that good to carry this to a decent rating though."

But there was a lot of junk on this show that felt like it didn't belong and it felt like they were running the show on a time budget where the previous manias going back to III were not shy about run times. Even more nonsensical, they thought it was a good idea to give LOD an interview segment 1 match into the show where they brought back their old manager Paul Ellering who would be quickly followed by Rocko The Dummy. No wonder Hawk flipped out at SummerSlam and left hte company. Owen/Skinner was crap, Tatanka/Martel was just filler, the 8 man tag was pretty much a comedy spot and the tag title match was a failure. Also to note, Bulldog/Berzerker was a match scheduled for the show but that got cut because of run time issues. Check this show out for the World and IC title matches obviously and maybe Shawn in his Mania debut as a singles star. Everything else is FF. This show was definitely the end of the golden age of WrestleMania and they started going for smaller venues and shorter cards and WrestleMania never really got back to the level of spectacle until maybe Mania 14 or 16."

It's not all peaches and cream though so I'll get the negatives out of the way first: The eight man tag, Money Inc vs Natural Disasters and Tatanka vs Rick Martel were all lame wastes that didn't need to be on Mania. Those were mostly kept short though, giving time to some REALLY GREAT MATCHES. Roddy Piper and Bret Hart laid down a classic match for the IC Title. Ric Flair and Macho Man threw out a banger for the WWF Title and Hogan and Sid did an... okay job with the main event. Bungled finish aside, I actually didn't hate this match, but that might just be all my good will for Sid coming to roost. Shawn vs Tito and Taker vs Jake do a good job of not ruining the show, and all in all it was a very pleasant experience watching this show. [8.0] "This is a WrestleMania best thought of as two parts, one stellar, one decent. The first part features Shawn Michaels in his first singles PPV appearance, and it's a decent match that puts Shawn over as a singles threat, and gets the crowd fired up. Solid opener! Undertaker vs Jake Roberts is underrated. While it's not the match Jake should have had (the Savage/Roberts feud should've lasted until this show), and it's only about 6 1/2 minutes, it tells a good story of the dangerous veteran falling to the Phenom, who completed his face turn here. Next up is one of the greatest matches at any WrestleMania: Piper vs Bret. Like all matches during Bret's early run as a singles star, this match is tailor-made for his opponent, which means we get a back-and-forth brawl here, but Bret and Piper tell such an amazing, and most importantly, BELIEVABLE story that this one can't be missed. **** stars! The 8-man tag match that follows is clearly meant as a buffer between two great matches, and it serves that purpose. It builds anticipation for what should've been the main event. Next up is Flair/Savage. These two pulled heat from nothing in the month leading up to Mania, when Savage pulled an about-face from Jake to instead be named #1 contender. And of course the story revolves around Elizabeth, this time an illicit affair with Flair. Slow start to this one, but once Flair gets some color this one heats up quick! This is a true ***** star match, in my view, not quite as emotional as Savage's WMIV victory, or his retirement match last year, but their motivations, the outside interference, and the style worked all meshed together to form a believable segment with high stakes, where a victory was of utmost importance. This is one to show to modern spot fest fanatics as a shining example of how storytelling and believability elevates a match and draws the crowd in far better than the endless spot fests we're subjected to today. And this match should have closed the show! Unfortunately we have another third to go. This third begins with a forgettable Martel/Tatanka match. Martel is an underrated worker during this era, yet had to waste his time with a stiff like Tatanka, but at least this one is under 5 minutes. Next up is the Natural Disasters vs Money Inc. Good heat going into this one. As always, DiBiase's heel work is perfect, and Jimmy Hart adds to the match as the weasely manager we love to hate. This one is cut short, maybe due to time, just as it finds its stride. The countout finish is a cop out for Mania, but I don't think this one is deserving of negative stars either. And just prior to the main event, we see a throwaway match between Owen and Skinner. Blink and you'll miss it. Finally we have the main event. This is another match that isn't quite as awful as advertised. Yes it's punching, rest holds, and strength tests for a good bit of it, but the crowd is hot and Sid works the crowd, and camera, great! Overall a good WM despite a weak final third."

[7.0] "1992 remains one of the most interesting years for the WWF. Shawn Michaels vs. Tito Santana. The transition from Reba McEntire singing to Tito Santana coming out with Bobby Heenan calling her his sister ARRRIBA MCENTIRE will never not be funny. The first Mania singles match for HBK. I always liked the pairing of him and Sherri. The finish seemed like they missed something. **½. ake Roberts vs. The Undertaker. Since beating Jimmy Snuka in his Mania debut, Undertaker has won and lost the WWF Title and turned babyface. It? s no secret that Jake Roberts was on his way to WCW. That means he wasn? t about to get in much offense against a star of Undertaker? s calibre. A dominant win to give Undertaker shine. It wasn? t competitive, but it did what it had to. *¼. Roddy Piper vs. Bret Hart. Heenan said this was a street fighter against the Excellence of Execution. Pretty apt. Side note but I love this pink Bret attire. One of my favourite early Mania matches ever. They told an incredible story in under 15 minutes. The intensity level made sense, the wrestling was smooth, and that finish was perfect. Stellar wrestling. ****. Big Boss Man, Jim Duggan, Sgt. Slaughter and Virgil vs. The Mountie, The Nasty Boys and Repo Man. The pre-match intros from Family Feud host Ray Combs were rough. Talk about a fall from grace for Sgt. Slaughter, who was in the main event last year. Not that I? m complaining. This was mostly just a way to get a bunch of guys who were relevant thrown onto the card. It was like the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, but smaller because the company didn? t have nearly as much talent back then. A mess of a match but at least it was relatively short. ¾*. Ric Flair vs. Randy Savage. The first time the WWF Title was in the midcard. Big time intensity to this one. A great match that had exactly the kind of animosity you want in this situation. They? re two of the best to ever do it for a reason. ****¼. Rick Martel vs. Tatanka. We? re early into Tatanka? s run here. Commentary didn? t care much about this, with Bobby Heenan instead focusing on what happened to Ric Flair in the last match. He did have a fair share of Indian related jokes though. The match had no heat and was clearly there was a cool down after the title match. *. Money Inc. vs. The Natural Disasters. Kind of crazy to see the Tag Titles be the last championship defended at a Mania. I can? t stand IRS. Ted Dibiase is good, but IRS was the pits. The Natural Disasters didn? t do much for me either, so I wasn? t excited about this match. And I was right. A dull match with a weak finish. ½*. Owen Hart vs. Skinner. I? m not really sure why this was even on the card. Not much of a match and it didn? t exactly feel like it helped establish Owen so I don? t get it. 0 stars. This got billed as possibly being Hulk Hogan? s last match. This was a terrible match and arguably the worst Mania main event in history. Definitely to this point. 0 stars."

[8.0] "I consider it personally the Best WrestleMania in 1 to 9 editions . The "WrestleMania XIX of the 90s" great show from beginning to the end in my opinion and also the Main Event isnot so horrible I think as many consider it , and the so call " Botch" in the End was not so serious it was repaired by the double attack on Hogan by Papa Shango and Sid (instead I tought watching it right now that made Sid more "unbreakeble" able to kickout the LegDrop of Doom). Also the Retun of The Warrior years later has been critizied but itself at that time I think it was fucking amazing. Two Fasntastic matches , two of the best matches of the period : Piper vs Bret and Savage vs Flair... Awesome storytelling in both, awesome storylines created around and 4 my favorite workers of that generation. Piper vs Bret told the story of "student and Teacher" in an epic encounter that "made" Bret , his baptism at the Showcase of the Immortals and one of my favorite finish to a match ever. Ric Flair vs Savage is another masterpice of Storytelling, and Psicology , Ric Flair was an amazing worker really, every time I see him in a Ring I am amazed How Great he was. The Aftermatch also is great in my opinion because Savage is so frustrated about the bevhavior of Flair that at first doesn't realize the fact he just Won the Big one. Amazing, amazing the blod, the kickouts , the figure 4 leglock, one of my favorite matches ever at WrestleMania. The rest of the Card is great. HBK was "Mr Opener" at the time because he opened both the 8 and the 9 (I think because WWE knew he could open the dance better than anyone else ... like Seth or Aj in the last years WrestleMania) . In this edition great work against Tito Santana. Also The Undertaker vs Jake Roberts wasn't itself a great match but the storytelling around it was amazing and the way undertaker gimmick was portrayed at the time is amazing , he really seemed Unbeateble by any Human Being."

The rest of the card is fine, nothing that good, nothing that bad, except the main event, which is a terrible match with a horribly botched finish, just the worst finish to a Wrestlemania ever."

Great story and great win for Bret Hart. This match even features blood. Flair vs Savage is just awesome. Fantastic psychology and storytelling. One of the best matches for that time. Ending isn't the best but anyways great match. Unfortunately it didn't end this show. Instead of that we have on of the most boring matches of all time. Horrible botched ending made it even worse. At least there is surprising return of the Ultimate Warrior."

Sure, Savage/Flair and Hart/Piper were both really good, but the same can't be said for rest of the show. Savage/Flair should have been the main event, but instead they mid-carded it and then followed it with four consecutive bad matches. The show culminated in what could be argued as the worst WrestleMania main event in history."

It was transitional to a new era, Hulk Hogan vs Sid Vicious was the end of the gimmick era, not a perfect match but neither terrible. Shawn Michaels had his first single match, The Undertaker defeated Jake Roberts almost as if it was easy. The return of Ultimate Warrior at the end was unexpected."
