[3.0] "This show was merely an advertisment for their "this Tuesday in Texas" PLE, and it showed WWF had no interest in doing this PLE. Alot of the hype was given for macho man Randy savage vs Jake the snake Roberts and we didn't get it here. Taker's first title win was an afterthought and the survivor series matches were awful here. What a dump"

A far, far cry from the original Survivor Series in 1987, where every single match delivered."

[2.0] "The worst PPV WWF put on in 1991, this is barely a PPV and instead more of a commercial for next week's This Tuesday in Texas, which in itself was a total bomb. The show was a horrid bomb which peaked with its opening match which ended in a schmoz countout finish. That's the peak of the show by the way. The world title match was subpar, and the other three Survivor Series Tag match were heatless, nothing matches that dragged on. It was a shite show that was only there to build to another shite show."

The first match was about as star studded as you could get. The second match was pure gimmick fun. The Gravest Challenge had that eerie feeling going into it. The teams' tag match was awesome. The only thing that might have let me was the three on three but even then it delivered. Standouts were the interviews, both out in the audience and backstage, especially with the fallout of the Hogan/Taker match. I absolutely love love love this PPV"

The second match didn't suck as hard as I thought it would (3.25). I love it when Hogan loses (5). Battle of 4 tag teams was so-so (4.25). Finale gets a 3.75. The average is 5.15. However, there is a constant plugging of "This Tuesday in Texas" that becomes a major turnoff, using a pay per view as a commercial for a pay per view is another reason why the WWF was losing fans hand over fist during this time. This is enough to warrant a full point deduction when rewatching. Vince just HAD to put an even more bitter taste to his product, he's compelled. 4.15"

"There's a reason Vince never went back to using a PPV to promote another PPV again. There were some good moments but the whole event felt like a bit of a bait and switch, since commentators spent most of the show was promoting 'This Tuesday in Texas'. The whole purpose of a PPV is to feel like something special, a climax or at least some major event to deliver value for money for fans who spent time and money on the show. Instead this Survivor Series plodded along. Even important incidents such as the foreshadowing of The Rockers splitting up just felt slow and laboured. The main event was backtracked on the following Tuesday. At least they learned from it."

And then of course the title switch which was an interesting change of approach but the crowd did not react as Vince expected and the match itself was a total snooze."

The opener would be my MOTN although the DQ everyone minus Flair kind of ruined it. The second elimination match was a glorified squash for the babyfaces. Taker vs Hogan was decent especially for how young Taker was. Tag survivor series match was alright and advanced the story. Main event was fine but didn't feel like a main event. Overall decent show but not the strongest PPV they put on."

[5.0] "Survivor Series 1991 finally addresses my biggest problem with the previous Survivor Series events: they added a title match. The good news? WWF made a seemingly amazing surprise move by letting The Undertaker take the belt off Hogan and gave Ric Flair even more glorious heat & buzz in one brilliantly booked motion. The bad? The match itself was basically one long choke hold (Both of those guys, especially Taker, are athletically capable of so much more than the match that they gave) and of course, the WWF walked back their seemingly brave and surprise booking by having Hogan win the belt back almost immediately after this event ended. What's more, it's almost insultingly comical looking back in retrospect at the booking patterns to notice that Hogan (or Warrior) would drop their belts if placed in midcard World Heavyweight title matches on PPV. God forbid we send the kiddies home with a heel main event victory, right, simple Vince? I'm just not sure their little hearts could take it, or something... There's honestly not a lot to speak of outside of that "midcard title match" in this one. The opening survivor series bout had a great assortment of talent and personality that worked well together all match, and they squandered it on a terrible, terrible finish. The other survivor series bouts were either terrible (the 2nd match with the heel jobbers vs. poor Tito grouped with the blandest workers on the roster) or squarely mediocre. Maybe the one interesting takeaway from these other matches is the start of the Shawn Michaels heel turn and solo run as he argues with Jannetty after Marty accidentally caused his elimination. Unfortunately, Golden Era gives and takes from us in equal measure, and this whole execution was screwed up too. In a rare gaffe from the generally excellent and funny Monsoon/Heenan commentary team, we are repeatedly explained that Michaels was not eliminated and walked out on Jannetty, but we clearly see the referee count 3 and escort Michaels out of the ring. If Michaels was supposed to have kicked out, that's fine, but anyone with eyes can see that didn't happen and commentary should have adjusted. They even doubled down on the story not matching empirical reality in the post-match discussion. Just a sloppy show, overall. Some really great things are suggested in all of the above instances, but each great seedling is met with an equal negative."

[4.0] "This is a fairly eventful show, but in terms of wrestling action it's a pretty uninspired one. I enjoyed the opening match and Taker vs. Hogan was worth watching for historical significance, but other than that this show was a drag. A lot of the matches felt far too long, and were very basic. The promos from Savage and Roberts had more energy than most of the matches did. The show was cleverly structured to build towards This Tuesday In Texas, but from a pure entertainment perspective I don't think this is worth watching in its entirety. I'd recommend checking out the opener and Hogan vs. The Undertaker (just because it's an important match, even if it isn't very good) and skip the rest."

My favourite thing on this show was Team Flair vs Team Piper; which is the best Survivor Series match I've seen so far. Hogan vs Taker was good enough, and is still a cool moment; one that unfortunately couldn't last longer. This show also manages to have possibly the worst Survivor Series matches I've seen so far. This is the first Survivor Series show with a singles match, and it was certainly an appreciated buffer. The promotion for This Tuesday in Texas and the Savage/Roberts feud is good on this show too."

Nothing particularly wrong with it but its just unintersting (4/10). Apart from the opener the only highlights are some of the promos sprinkled throughout by guys like Piper, Roberts or Savage"

The best match was the opener with so much star power that it was impossible to screw it up. Other Elimination Matches were decent too, but nothing out of the ordinary while the WWF Championship Match was everything that you could expect from Hogan at this point and that includes him not selling the Piledriver at all and refusing to make the new monster look strong. It was nice to see Ric Flair for the first time in WWF and also one of the highlights has to be Roberts' incredible heel promo on Macho Man."

Easily the worst of the old school Survivor Series ppv's. They jettisoned the elimination tag formula almost completely the following year but they eventually found a more even balance between singles matches and elimination tags from 93-onward."
Tomas Cunha wrote on 16.09.2021:
[4.0] "Not a very good one. The opener (Flair/Piper) was the best match of the night in my opinion, and even that had a very disappointing finish. The highlight of the show was obviously Hogan/Undertaker with Taker winning his first title over a huge star, and also The Rockers' angle to a lesser extent, but apart from that this show left a lot to be desired. Most likely because it was nothing but a glorified ad for This Tuesday in Texas, let's face it. It doesn't surprise me that Vince changed the concept of Survivor Series the next year, as some of them here felt like nothing but filler, particularly the second one which absolutely sucked. Overall, I'd recommend you watching the opener and Hogan/Undertaker for historical reason, and you'll be just fine ignoring the rest."

[4.0] "Roddy Piper, Bret Hart, British Bulldog & Virgil vs. Ric Flair, Ted Dibiase, Warlord & Mountie. This may be the first survivor match where all eight guys are involved in feuds; Bret/Mountie, Warlord/Bulldog, Virgil/Dibiase and Flair/Piper. Good opening match that had a silly ending to, I guess, protect all the wrestlers; bad move as a lot of people get pinned in Survivor Series, why protect now? ***. Jim Duggan, Sgt. Slaughter, Tito Santana & Texas Tornado vs. Col. Mustafa, Berzerker, Hercules & Skinner. Mustafa and Duggan are the captains I think, they never announced it, whatever I? m not losing any sleep over it. Jim ? The Anvil? Neidhart was supposed to be the fourth member of Team Duggan, but Ric Flair put him out with the figure-four leglock; Slaughter, who became a face after ? getting his country back? , replaced him. This match is like gimmick hell, or jobber hell. The match ended, thank God. 1/2*. Hulk Hogan vs. Undertaker. This was billed as ? The Gravest Challenge? and quite possible the end of the true Hogan era in the WWF. I? m sorry that match was boring as hell; I know the Undertaker? s zombie character leads to matches like this, but they still suck. Hogan would get revenge in a rematch at ? Tuesday in Texas? but there would be controversy there as well involving Ric Flair, leading to the vacant WWF title and the Royal Rumble 1992. 3/4*. Rockers & Bushwhackers vs. Nasty Boys & Beverly Brothers. Nothing special except for the Rockers? pending break-up; although it appeared that more was supposed to occur here with the commentators confusion about why Shawn left the ring, Gorilla and Heenan couldn? t have been that bored to lose track of the match, could they? Anyway it was what it was and there was also some confusion in the end. *1/4. Big Bossman & Legion of Doom vs. Irwin R. Schyster & Natural Disasters. Jake Roberts and Sid Justice were the original team captains but Sid moved aside in case Randy Savage was reinstated before Survivor Series to captain the team against Roberts. They were taken out of the match at the onset of the show, taking this from an anticipated exciting main event, to a neutered crappy six-man elimination tag match that you would see on an episode of Prime Time Wrestling. Not a great match to close the show; seemed like everyone was off or going through the motions as the match was killed and the show should have ended with Hogan and Undertaker despite the heel title switch. *. This PPV started out okay but died a slow painful death. The only good match on this PPV was the opening contest; the Rockers? break-up was beginning here which is the only other interesting thing happening on this show with the exception of the Undertaker winning his first WWF championship, but the match that lead there was boring. Half of the matches, that they built to for months, were baited and switched in favour of the Tuesday in Texas PPV."

[8.0] "i can be wrong, but, in my opinion, that was one of the best classic SS PPV, just because how fun it was. Ric Flair as a top "survivor" right after he jumped ship from WCW as a champ, faces just destroying heels with no chance, great "The Rockers" performence and The Undertaker/Hulk Hogan match, which is not technical masterpiece by any means, but solid battle of "cartoony characters", with a best final for any Hulk Hogan's title change match. I think that really helped established The Undertaker as a top guy, so... you know... nice little show of its time."

[5.0] "A very mediocre Survivor Series event but not a terrible one for me. First elimination match is very solid even with very weird if not bad ending. Second match is awful as well as WWF title match itself. There are too many interviews after that and it becomes annoying though promos themselves aren't bad. Survivor Series match between teams is pretty enjoyable. So called "main event" is boring and has a predictable ending with IRS. Terrible idea to close the show."

The matches in between weren't amazing but none were bad, except maybe the Duggan match. Taker beating Hogan for the title is very historic of course, very unexpected at the time."
DanTalksRasslin wrote on 16.10.2017:
[6.0] "The one non-Survivor Series match - Hogan vs Taker - was a decent brawl and a good spectacle, and an important relatively-early moment for Taker as he claimed his first (albeit brief) World Title reign. The first Survivor Series match was also entertaining stuff, with classic heels Flair and DiBiase doing what they do best against classic babyfaces Bret, Bulldog and Piper (and Virgil was there too, and actually getting decent pops himself at that point), though the end was a bit rushed with five guys getting DQ'd at once. The Nasties/Beverlys vs Rockers/Bushwhackers was OK, though mainly notable for building the Rockers' split, and the six-man Survivor Series was fine if unremarkable. The show was rounded out with some good promos with major stars of the day, including a great one from Macho Man and Elizabeth as they built to Mach's grudge match with Jake Roberts after the snakebite angle. There's some fun stuff here for fans of the era."

The other three elimination matches have nothing to appreciate, maybe except for the hint of split of the Rockers. Hulk Hogan vs The Undertaker is terrible, boring chants were unusual at the time, the crowd hated it. Avoid it or watch only the ending of Hogan vs Taker (which is the beginning of a too short reign for Taker)."

[7.0] "I thought this Survivor Series had great storytelling and it had some pretty good matches for the most part! You had 2 good promos from Macho Man & Elizabeth as well as Jake Roberts all building up to Savage vs. Roberts at This Tuesday In Texas! I thought they built that story up very well! The Beverly Brothers & Nasty Boys vs. Bushwhackers & Rockers match was pretty good. It showed great and legendary storytelling when there was dessension between The Rockers after Shawn Michaels was eliminated! Flair's team vs. Piper's team was great! However I didn't like the ending when the 5 remaining guys on both guys were disqualified and Ric Flair was the sole survivor only because I thought this could've been even more great, more competitive, and more of a wrestling clinic than it already was! Boss Man & LOD vs. IRS & Natural Disasters was definitely good, but it would've been a better ending if Boss Man forced IRS back into the ring leading to a Doomsday Device from LOD for the win, but instead all we got was a flying clothesline from Hawk after IRS' encounter with Boss Man, so I was a bit disappointed by that, but it was a good match though! Hogan vs. Undertaker for the WWF title, the match wasn't all that great, but the ending to the match obviously left a great Survivor Series moment to remember, and Taker's promo hyping up his title rematch with Hogan at This Tuesday In Texas was a good way to end the show, so I thought it was good for what it was!"
