618.02.2026SebasDiaz6.0My rating for SummerSlam 1989, it's a 6/10, an event that had for some part amazing matches (being Ultimate Warrior vs Rick Rude my favorite) and from the other as the even kept going, the second half had some lame matches, and the ending like always with Hulk Hogan being the hero of everything with a victory in this case with Brutus Beefcake, 6/10

802.02.2026Hitman266.0The second SummerSlam was good, even though it had some under average matches it had its good as well. The best match here is definitely Rick Rude vs Ultimate Warrior, these two had really nice match with both of them having some cool moments in the match. Another cool match here is the Rockers and Santana match since it was a nice heel vs face match with nice spots. The first match was also pretty good with a The Hart Foundation taking on The Brain Busters. The Main Event was ok even thought it wasn't the best wrestling wise the fans made it enjoyable because they were into the characters so much. The worst match in this PPV is definitely Dusty Rhodes vs Honky Tonk Man. Overall a PPV with its good moments and it's bad.

1531.07.2025Smi-485.0Good at the beginning, bad at the end. Summerslam 1989 kicks off with a no-frills, pretty tag match and also offers some nice entertainment with the 6-man tag around the Rockers. Even the Warrior manages to put on a decent match against Ravishing Rick, much better than the cage match at Summerslam the following year. Some things then go rather unimpressively, such as the Perfect match, which is a little too short due to Taylor's obvious injury, or the pale success of the American Dream. Towards the end, however, the show becomes mercilessly bad and one annoyance follows the next. Demolition and Duggan deliver grandiose shenanigans, and the final three matches are almost worse. Valentine sets up his feud with Garvin and only delivers a sketch of a presentable encounter, DiBiase and Snuka get no time at all and Hogan bungles together a complete disaster with Beefcake and the insufferable Tiny Lister, which is only halfway painless to endure when Savage shows up in the ring. The fact that this PPV also ends with a posing Hulkster doesn't really need to be mentioned. Conclusion - the first 90 minutes are okay, after that you can basically forget the show.
1621.07.2025WrestleRaveNick4.0"Adequate" really is the perfect word for this show. There are definitely some solid matches, but like much of this era, it's weighed down by too much filler and bouts that have no business being on a pay-per-view. It was also strange hearing Tony Schiavone on commentary for a WWF show--I've never been his biggest fan. Gimme Gorilla any day. Match of the night easily goes to Rude vs. Warrior. As for Zeus, he was comically terrible in the ring, but somehow still entertaining--Deebo made it so bizarre, you almost have to see it. All in all, not much else to say--it was adequate.

2406.04.2025owenc5105.0All things considered, I thought this was a decent show. There was some good stuff but there was also a lot of bad to balance it out keeping the rating at a middle of the road 5/10. It was much much better than the previous Summerslam. I'll go with the good stuff first. The show started with a fine opening tag match. It was good but was slow at points and had a lousy ending. However, it was fun and the Hart Foundation were very good. I stress that the Hart Foundation were the stars of the match. Next, I thought that Mr Perfect vs Red Rooster was a decent match for the time it had. The six man tag match with The Rockers and Tito Santana vs The Rougeaus and Rick Martel was really good and was the second best match on the show. The heels were great heels and worked really well together, the faces were good at the comeback. The best match of the night was Ultimate Warrior vs Rick Rude. It was an excellent contest with both men being really great. And finally I thought the other six man tag match with Demolition & Jim Duggan vs Twin Towers and Andre the Giant was a decent match. The crowd was really into it and it was pretty fun. Now the bad stuff. Hercules vs Greg Valentine and Jimmy Snuka vs Ted DiBiase weren't much and weren't very good. I liked the post match beat down of Virgil by Jimmy Snuka. I was not a fan of the main event. I was bored for a lot of the match. There was a lot of choking and bear hugs by Zeus, there was a lot of stalling and the action just seemed sloppy and awkward with everyone. I was only interested when Beefcake got in. The worst match of the night was easily Dusty Rhodes vs Honky Tonk Man. It was incredibly boring.
2519.03.2025ChristianCaged7.0From a workrate perspective, this was probably one of the best PPVs that WWF ran in the 80s. The opener is an underrated tag team clinic between two of the best working tag teams of the era: The Hart Foundation and The Brain Busters (***3/4). Ultimate Warrior and Rick Rude's IC rematch is probably the highlight of the night though (****), as these two have pretty unreal chemistry. Only Savage worked better with Warrior, for my money. Even the main event, although not a particularly "good" wrestling match, has enough drama and thrills to be somewhat memorable. It's not nearly as good as the similar tag team main event from the year before, but I enjoyed it enough. There's a few stinkers, granted, but they're kept short enough to be inoffensive. The crowd was molten for this thing too.

2817.02.2025HugoRoids2.0The opener was fun but honestly if it wasn't for the insanely good Rude Vs. Warrior match and the crowd for the main event, this would be the Summerslam equivalent of Wrestlemania 4. Super boring and I nearly fell asleep twice. I'll forget everything except for the aforementioned things when I wake up tomorrow.
2919.11.2024Rmayne246 Much like last year quite a substantial amount of average or short matches. Rude dragged Warrior to one of his best though and with that + the opening tag and the 6 man this showed had some quality.

3403.08.2024SpecialAgentCooper4.0I think this was a notable step back from the very average debut SummerSlam, in large part due to the main event being a similar type of inconsequential tag spectacle match, but with the wrestler substitutions being a massive talent decrease. In a statement that I never thought I would type, I have to begrudgingly admit that The Ultimate Warrior was involved in the best overall wrestling match of the night in reclaiming the Intercontinental Championship from Rick Rude. Somehow these guys found just the right balance of character work and power moves to make The Warrior look much more competent in-ring than usual. The only other instance, from my memory, that this would happen again would be the future retirement match that pitted Warrior against Savage. The latter match also had the benefit of incredible long-term storytelling built in to the match. However, this one may have been his best actual worked match as a WWF wrestler, not that it is a very high bar. Most of the other undercard matches weren't too bad on this PPV until it got to the dreadful stretch with the big oaf 6-man match that was followed by the Hercules/Valentine match that seemed to exist for no purpose other than Garvin having fun on the microphone. There's just nothing that I'd call particularly notable outside of the Rude/Warrior battle. I'm finding it an unfortunate pattern with these 80's PPVs that they almost never have more than one truly strong, important or memorable match. It's a shame considering how largely fun the gimmicks and personalities of the so-called Golden Era were.

4621.02.2024benny5bellys4.0This was a pretty rough PPV, best match were Rude/Warrior and the especially the six man with the Rockers in it which was a lot of fun. I liked the main event more than most because the crowd were well into it. The faces cheated 3 times on this card to win. Tut tut.
4709.12.2023Nevermore425.0This was not a good show, but it somehow managed to be better than the sum of its parts. We kicked tings off with the Match of the Night, as The Hart Foundation took on the Brain Busters in a non-title match. Things, then head downhill immediately, as Dusty Rhodes takes on the Honky Tonk Man in a match that was way worse than I expected from either man. We then got a sort and uninspired match between the Red Rooster and Mr. Perfect. Things then start to pick back up in the form of a pretty good trios match between the teams of Rick Martel and the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers and Tito Santana and the Rockers. We then got our only title match of the night as the Ultimate Warrior won the Intercontinental Title from Rick Rude in a shockingly great match. This ends the high points of the show, as we next get a dull trios match between Demolition and King Duggan and Andre the Giant and the Twin Towers. This lead into a short and dull match between Greg Valentine and Hercules. We then hit the low point of the night as Ted DiBiase fought Jimmy Snuka for too long. Finally, we got a pretty horrid tag match between Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake and Randy Savage and Zeus.
4805.12.2023lukerocker94.0Show starts up with The Harts vs the BrainBusters, solid tag work from some of the best workers on the card, but I never felt like it really got going (5/10) Dusty Rhodes beats Honky in a match that could've been way shorter since it didn't have anything going on apart from dancing (2/10) Perfect/Rooster was a fine squash match and nothing more (4/10) Mater & the Rougeaus vs the Rockers & Santana is a fun fast paced match for the most part, the moments where it slowed down weren't that intersting but it kept a decent pace (6/10) Warrior/Rude had some moments of rest hold overkill, but it got fairly entertaining by the end with Warrior showing some cool power moves and somehow having the best match on the show (6/10) The second six man tag was watchable when it was Towers vs Demolition but Andre couldn't work anymore and Duggan was always a negative in any match he was in so it ends up being quite dull (3/10) Valentine/Hercules is barely a match and could've been left out of the card, its just there to build for Valentine/Garvin down the line (2/10) Dibiase/Snuka had some rough moments mixed with some decent wrestling by Ted but had a pointless countout finish ruining it beyond repair (3/10) The Main Event is only fine when Savage is in the ring. Beefcake was underwhelming and Zeus couldn't do anything, dissapointing way to close the show (3/10) A step down from the first SummerSlam in my opinion
4903.12.2023Rjepic14.0A show that for me was just fine. I thought this second SummerSlam was quite a bit worse than the first, I've found that there isn't a lot of early SummerSlam's I've cared for though. My MVP for this show was Miss Elizabeth; I enjoyed her returning on this show. On the other side of the fence, I really didn't care for WWF Dusty Rhodes here or his match against Honky Tonk Man. A pretty weak main event for a big show here mainly due to them using an actor as a wrestler in the late 80's.

5303.11.2023TrailsOfPersona4.0This is the definition of a middle of the road PPV to me. There's not really many moments that are especially bad across this show, but there really aren't any moments that will leave a lasting impression in your mind either. The event was serviceable. Nothing more, nothing less. What's interesting about this show to me is, for the most part, the tag affairs were the highlights, and the single matches were where the card let down, when usually that's the opposite. I think another reason I feel this way is because a lot of these matches seemed to be a little bit cold. Besides the main event and the IC title match, I don't think there were that many hot feuds going into this. In fact, if you look at crowd reaction, beyond those two matches, Martel vs. Santana might have gotten the best reaction, so maybe they should have had a single match instead of Dusty and Honky or DiBiase and Snuka. You could have swapped them around some and maybe gotten a little more juice out of this show. Not a bad show by any means, but definitely not one with any legs on it.
5409.09.2023JacquesRougeauCanHaveMyWife6.0I did feel the heat for the first part of the show, but then it derailed to the wrong tracks. The opener was incredible and I couldn't wish for the better match to open the show. A brilliant Tag Team Match with some phenomenal heel work from The Brain Busters. Dusty vs Honky was okay mainly due to Rhodes being insanely over with the crowd and the 6-Man Tag Team Match was a lot of fun. Rude pulled the best possible match out of Warrior and I didn't think that it was possible after their first match a few months back. After that though there was nothing worth the time, with the main event being the only decent match left on the card. Not a bad SummerSlam overall.
5508.09.2023Hirsch7776.0
5604.08.2023KingsCrossing5.0This was a decent show that was dragged down by lot of filler. If a few of the weaker matched were cut out then everything would have flowed much better. There was nothing truly exceptional, but it did have one of Warrior's best matches, and the opener and first six man tag were both good. The main event was far from a masterpiece but I think it still had some light hearted entertainment value. It's nothing amazing, but it's far from the worst PPV you'll ever see.

6609.01.2022TigerDiver7.0Somewhat of an underrated show to be honest. Sure, there were a number of fillers in the undercard, but the great stuff here is, well, GREAT. The opening tag was an excellent display of classic tag wrestling between two legendary teams who never get a chance to face off before or again, the six-man tag was a fast-paced and exhilarating affair, Warrior/Rude was a very smartly worked match that saw Rude doing an all-time carry job, and the main event, while average, exceeded a lot of my expectations. Not to mention, the crowd was also red hot for the whole show, which really made the viewing experience a lot better.

7512.06.2021Tomas Cunha6.0Overall, I think SummerSlam 1989 was actually a pretty decent show. An all-timer even, compared to that year's shitty WrestleMania! There's a lot to like here in my opinion - Warrior vs. Rude is really good, and so are The Brain Busters vs. The Hart Foundation and the Tito/Rockers vs. Martel/Rougeaus six men tag match. The main event was actually a bit better than what I expected, and I was entertained by the Dusty Rhodes vs. Honky Tonk Man undercard match. The rest of the show honestly felt like filler, but there was nothing too offensive or particularly bad, for that matter. The worst I can think of is that awful Jimmy Snuka botched leapfrog. I'd say this PPV is (slightly) recommended.
7609.05.2021Mahanx6.0
7720.01.2021JokerDeSilva4.0A pretty subpar card, especially when compared to the drama of '88, or even Wrestlemania 5 before it. The ongoing feud of Hogan and Savage has some legs, but adding Zeus and Beefcake does nothing but heavily dilute it, since Zeus is a fictional character brought to life played by a man who is by no means a professional wrestler, and Brutus is, well, Brutus. From there, we have to deal with what is, frankly, a pretty dire undercard, There are a few high spots - Hart Foundation-Brain Busters, more early Rockers action, one of Warrior's best ever matches against Rick Rude - but it doesn't elevate much of the rest. Dusty Rhodes is paraded about in intentionally embarrassing fashion in a dire Honky Tonk match, Jim Duggan does his sluggish worst in there with two wrestlers who can't carry him at all and a fading Andre, Ted DiBiase faces a Jimmy Snuka well past his prime, and the less said about Ronnie Garvin's ring announcing and that whole angle? The better. It's just not a very good card, and doesn't inspire a ton of optimism for the direct future.
7824.12.2020Strong Zero Machine5.0
7924.10.2020btcaunce5.0The Brainbusters (w/Bobby Heenan) vs. The Hart Foundation. One of my favourite matches of the 80s. The Busters had just won the titles from Demolition in a huge upset on Saturday Night? s Main Event a few weeks earlier. Arn and Tully will always be associated with the NWA in fans? minds, but they actually did better per capita work in the WWF because the WWF put them in there with their best talent right away. ****1/4. Dusty Rhodes vs. The Honky Tonk Man. Honky? s star was falling a year after he was Intercontinental Champion. To say HTM was not a fan of Rhodes is an understatement. In fact, he goes off on him in his shoot interview for stirring things up in the WWF locker room by saying he would take certain guys with him back to WCW but then wouldn? t return their calls once he was hired as WCW booker. The match blowed. 1/2*. Mr. Perfect vs. The Red Rooster. This could have been the show-stealer, but it was cut short by Rooster? s knee injury. It? s not like Perfect wasn? t going to win anyway, but it could have been a better match. 3/4*. Tito Santana & The Rockers vs. Rick Martel & The Rougeaus. See, Slick is a streetwise conman while Martel is an arrogant Eurotrash (by way of Canada) male model, so naturally they were paired up. I smell a sitcom! Excellent tag team wrestling, and if you like this, you should track down every Rockers vs. Rougeaus, Brainbusters, Demolition, Hart Foundation match you can find. It? s all good! ***1/2. Rick Rude vs. The Ultimate Warrior. This really did have an epic feel to it, which hadn? t really happened since Savage vs. Steamboat. Both guys were on, and this was Warrior? s best match to that point. ***1/2 Andre the Giant, Big Boss Man & Akeem vs. King Hacksaw Jim Duggan & Demolition. The Boss Man is the only mobile person on his team, so I? ll just fast-forward through this. It sucked. 1/4*. Greg Valentine vs. Hercules. Ronnie lost a retirement match with Valentine a few weeks earlier, so he had to become a ? lowly referee? . Amazingly, Ronnie seemed to get assigned to nearly every Valentine match, and if he wasn? t, he? d just run down and convince the other ref that Valentine did something illegal and get him disqualified. I make fun here, but all this would actually set up a pretty good match between the two at the Royal Rumble the following year. 1/4* Ted Dibiase vs. Jimmy Snuka. Speaking of pointless matches, we have this. Dibiase went from being scheduled to hold the WWF Title in 1988 to meandering around with guys like Snuka and Hercules in 1989. 3/4*. Hulk Hogan & Brutus Beefcake vs. Randy Savage & Zeus. I'll sum this match up. Hero + obstacle = drama. It was pretty pedestrian. **3/4. A lot of people don't like Zeus, and I'll agree that he shouldn't have hung around after this show, but the character was good for a Hogan opponent. He wasn't really a gimmick in the traditional sense. Plus, there was a great opener and a pretty good six-man tag in there along with the memorable Intercontinenta
8026.09.2020Mizzle Assault Ant5.0The end result is middle of the road. Amazingly good opener, definite match of the night and in my opinion an overlooked match of the year contender. Six man tag was also really good and Warrior/Rude was miraculously good, not great by usual standards but amazing by Warrior standards. Several of the matches aren't too interesting, the main event is a big stinker of course but Jimmy Snuka also turns in a notably poor performance.

8816.08.2018The Old School7.0Another good SummerSlam this time with much more enjoyable undercard. Opener is very good. Six man tag is surprisingly even better. Rude vs Warrior is a match of the night. One of the best match in careers of both wrestlers. Main event is pretty entertaining. Yes, Zeus participating in it bug I liked this match.

9002.05.2018leblake3.0Two pretty good matches took place back-to-back right in the middle of this show, but everything else wasn't all that good. The main event was based around a movie, complete with the non-wrestling actor playing his movie character in a wrestling match.

Insgesamt in Ordnung (**¾).
9413.06.2016jackleone6.0Not a bad edition of Summerslam. The main event has the infamous feud between Hulk Hogan and Zeus but the story for this match wasn't terrible, there was so much star power in that ring even with Zeus inside it, also the conclusion was nice. The tag team match and the 3 vs 3 stole the show, Rude vs Warrior was better than average. There was something good in DiBiase vs Snuka, except for a terrible ending. The rest of the event wasn't remarcable.

9616.05.2016jfpj913.0DiBiase can take some beautiful bumps. I feel like he is so underutilized and never gets enough time in the matches to shine. On the flip side of the coin, we have Zeus. I scripted feud for a film spilling over to the ring. If no selling makes him powerful, then anyone could be a champ. This was unenjoyable.
