[8.0] "The first Survivor Series is a really good 'all killer, no filler' kind of show where every match on the card made use of the classic Survivor Series Elimination Rules, which left a pretty stacked card and some really good wrestling as well as some really good storytelling in each match. The big attraction was the Team Hogan vs Team Andre main event to continue the ongoing feud from WrestleMania III and the opening Team Honkey vs Team Macho where Savage had Steamboat and Jake the Snake on his team, and they're both fun to watch, but the best matches here was the giant 20-man Tag Team version of the match and the Women's match because of how the Jumping Bomb Angels burst onto the scene. There's also a fun Ted DiBiase segment here as well. What a great heel character he was."

Overall WWF Survivor Series (1987) is a real good and consistent show, and a great kickoff the company's more classic Big 4 PPV."

In this time period Vince made every character in WWF fairly memorable and entertaining. Solid 9/10. P.s. Fantastic in-ring work by the Jumping Bomb Angels and Bret Hart."

GimliJr wrote on 01.04.2025:
[6.0] "Innovative show, flawless and fun to follow. The fact that there were 4 elimination matches could have been tiring, but the writing was varied enough that we didn't really get bored during these first Survivor Series matches. The construction of the matches and, above all, the teams isn't made sufficiently explicit, but it's clear that these 4 bouts revolve around rivalries for the promotion's major titles. Particularly noteworthy are the rich women's match and the main event, which continues the rivalry between Andre and Hogan. With all the action in the ring, there wasn't much outside it. Apart from the effective Million Dollar Man promo package and the simple pre-match promos which saw the teams show their muscles before entering the ring. In-ring quality: 3/5. Non-match angles and segments: 0.5/3. Bonus/Malus: Interesting and innovative concept + good atmosphere +0.5. Total: 6/10. Show seen on WWE Network."

[6.0] "This show gets the same rating as WrestleMania III that happened in the same year. While Mania had a classic match and an iconic moment but also a couple of dull stuff, the very first Survivor Series event had no real highlight but no real stinkers either. It was decent and watchable from start to finish and was certainly interesting as a novelty at that time, but there is nothing I would really recommend and no moments I would go back to. I had a good time watching it though and I would rate this show as okay."
ChristianCaged wrote on 27.02.2025:
[5.0] "I would call this first iteration of Survivor Series a mixed bag. The main upside is the new concept, which was fresh and had the great visual appeal of having a bunch of stars working together. It also allowed for longer matches at a time when sub-10-minutes was the standard for all but your top bouts. That's a bit of a double-edged sword though, as the opener proves. It's great when Savage and Steamboat are in there, but Honky Tonk Man working a five-minute heat segment on Brutus Beefcake is less exciting. The best match on the show is certainly the 20-man tag team elimination match (***). It's the longest match, but has the fastest pace and is pretty fun to watch. Lots of big PPV debuts here, including Demolition, Rick Rude, Bam Bam Bigelow and of course Ted DiBiase, who cuts a promo."

The opener was fun and did a good job showcasing the mid card, the women's match was shockingly great because of the JBA's, and the main event was fun nonsense. The reason I rate this so low, however, is that tag match that just DRAGS for 37 pissing minutes. It almost made me turn the show off."

I was not a fan of the pace in the 10 Vs. 10 Tag Team match at all, and the work rate for the women's match was just bad. I can appreciate the historical value of this even while also admitting that it's just okay for a PPV."

[4.0] "In my view, Survivor Series 1987 is the rare WWF PPV that lacks anything resembling classic or noteworthy, but also completely avoids stinkers. It has all "pretty good" matches that I would rate between 6 to 7 out of 10. If delivering a PPV was simply about the average match quality, I'd happily give this show a 6/10 and move along. On the other hand, this entire show consists of 4 long matches, and none of them carry any type of title defense or special brag-able yearly privilege or honor. It's a terrible, samey recipe for a show that doesn't have any kind of feel of stakes for a single moment of the night. The only reason the PPV isn't a total waste of time in the grand scheme of things is that it firmly established a new "Big Four" PPV type that could at least have the potential for future format improvement. The rare "tag team elimination rules" survivor series match, although decently worked, was also entirely too long and crowded to be effective. Arguably, the best part of the whole show was the Ted DiBiase promo/clipshow segment showing him trolling all the kids and fans, just classic heel work from one of the best all-time characters."

The womens match was good aswell. The tag team elimination match was was also good and i really liked the fact that it lasted that long. The Main Event was also good and with unexpected. I thought Hogan was going to win this and him getting eliminated by count down was really clever. Bam Bam Bigelow performed great and it was nice seeing Andre winning this."

The ladies match was useless & pointless aside from The Bomb Angels, The Glamour Ghouls & Velvet McIntyre (2). The tag team match will always have a special place in my heart, despite the booking (7.25). The main event was good enough but that Hogan show at the end? BARF! (5.75) The average is a 5.5 but the overall concept, historical significance, mood/tone and work of the show (including the strong commentary) help elevate it to a higher position. 6.5"

[6.0] "For the WWF's first non Wrestlemania PPV, they made sure it was a good one. Honestly, I think this show was the best 'first' event of the WWF's Big 4 events. All four matches are well done. They're all competitive and make great use of the time they were given and the match's format. Some are better than others, but none of these matches will leave you disappointed. Some later Survivor Series matches might put more drama into the concept, but this laid a fantastic groundwork. Just an enjoyable show all the way through. This is always a fun event to throw on, even if you've seen it a few times before."

It was the worst match on the card but it wasn't bad. Next the women were fantastic. The jumping bomb angels ROCKED and the glamor girls looked good as well. The tag team division was again a good match but it felt entirely way too long. The main event seemed centred between hogan and Andre but with a nice surprise bam bam was the one who got the last couple after hogan got counted out, which was very nice to see"

Opening match was alright getting good when the better workers were in the ring (6/10) both middle matches I felt suffered from draggin on way too long both would be 5/10 with the tag match being slightly better. The Main Event is the clear highlight of the show for me, one of the better matches in the 80s WWF style you could get (8/10)"

The first one and the third one were okay, almost cold matches that were all about the stipulation alone. But then the main event kicked it up a notch as they introduced some actual feud into this elimination match, which elevated it to the higher level. Good show, a lot of fun."
Rjepic1 wrote on 25.07.2023:
[6.0] "The first Survivor Series is decent, but nothing spectacular. This show was of course created to screw with Jim Crockett promotions by running on the same day as Starrcade and forcing a ton of the PPV companies not to carry. Most these matches are relatively alright; I'm not the biggest fan of Survivor Series matches if there's not a good story going in. This show is of note for it's spotlight on the "Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase; who only recently joined the WWF. This show also had Andre's first match back since Mania 3."

[5.0] "Tough show to rate. I enjoyed the main event and felt the opener was solid, but the other two matches were very flawed. The biggest issue with this show is that four back-to-back matches of the same stipulation that are all very long meant the event was a real slog to get through. I think I would have enjoyed any of the matches more if I watched them in isolation than as part of the event in its entirety. The two matches in the middle really dragged the show down for me. I may be an outlier here as I know many enjoy the Ten Team Tag, but I thought it was very boring and that the show would have been better served by cutting its run time and having some singles matches in the middle to break up the pace. As it stands I got more enjoyment out of the video they played highlighting Ted DiBiase's antics than most of the actual wrestling. The main event was my pick for MOTN and is worth checking out, but I don't think I'd ever have much desire to rewatch the rest."

[6.0] "A show with only Survivor Series elimination matches sounds like a chapter out of one of my nightmares. After watching this show though, it actually ended up being okay. Lemme say off the bat, the one with the tag teams where there's 20 guys can go in the garbage can where stupid convoluted matches with Paul Roma go. The opener is okay, and I actually didn't mind Honky walking out as the match was running long at that point anyway. You can toss the majority of the Women's match, but the Jumping Bomb Angels rule, and we got a somewhat decent performance out of Velvet and Sherri. The main event was okay too, with a good group of guys for a match like this and also One Man Gang was there too. Bam Bam got a nice little showing out of it which makes me happy and also a little annoyed that he got shafted so bad at Mania 4. I'd say this is a tentative recommend. If you're willing to be bored for a while in exchange for some really awesome moments then yeah give this whole show a watch. If you don't have the time, I don't really have a specific match in mind to throw out. I'll say one thumb up is good."

JokerDeSilva wrote on 25.11.2020:
[7.0] "For the first ever Survivor Series, it certainly showed up well and cemented the gimmick. The main event was a big main event clash, mediocre between the ropes but the characters were larger than life and excellently delivered. Meanwhile, the tag team and women's matches were both far better than they should have been, sloppy in spots but always incredibly entertaining, and this entire PPV is worth watching for the Jumping Bomb Angels alone. It's a perfect distillation of 80s WWF into one show, for all the highs and lows that includes, and you couldn't pick a much more solid show to watch."

But historical value aside, this was still a great PPV event. The crowd was on fire, the undercard matches were all good (with the women's match especially being a highlight), the Million Dollar Man promo was exceptional, and then the main event was a great match."

"Our opening match is Randy Savage, Ricky Steamboat, Brutus Beefcake, Jake Roberts & Jim Duggan vs. Honky Tonk Man, Ron Bass, Hercules, Danny Davis & Harley Race. Let? s see. Randy is feuding with HTM over the Intercontinental Title, and the Harts by proxy because Bret cost him the title on a Saturday Night? s Main Event. That? s the major feud. This was a pretty good example of how to build an elimination match, especially with all the hapless heels in there. ***1/4. Next up we have Sensational Sherri, Dawn Marie, Donna Christianello & the Glamour Girls vs. The Fabulous Moolah, Rockin? Robin, Velvet McIntyre & The Jumping Bomb Angels. Why is Moolah a babyface? Did I miss something? A quick check reveals I did not. Moolah just started being a good person one day. Maybe she found Jesus. I? m guessing not, though. The Angels impressed everyone and had a decent run in the WWF for a couple of Japanese women. Apart from that the match sucked. **. We would then get the Tag Team Survivor Match: Demolition, The Islanders, The Hart Foundation, The New Dream Team & The Bolsheviks vs. Strike Force, the Rougeau Bros. , The British Bulldogs, The Young Stallions & The Killer Bees. Wow! Ten tag teams ? IN ONE MATCH! I won? t bother you with much play-by-play, but I will say the match is tremendous and definitely worth a look. ****. And then we would have the Main Event: Andre the Giant, King Kong Bundy, The One Man Gang, Butch Reed & Rick Rude vs. Hulk Hogan, Paul Orndorff, Bam Bam Bigelow, Ken Patera & Don Muraco. Now there? s some raw tonnage in that ring. Multiple subplots here: Hogan and Andre hate each other, of course. Andre turned on Hogan and challenged him nearly a year earlier. They had the Match of the Century at WrestleMania III, which Hogan won, but Andre thought he got the win early in the match. Longtime Hogan nemesis ? Mr. Wonderful? Paul Orndorff turned face and is a part of Hogan? s team, but Jesse points out that Hogan can? t trust him. Bam Bam Bigelow had debuted not long before and was still something of a wild card. None of these guys were particularly great wrestlers at this point, but they knew how to build the match in order to get their goals (a: build a Hogan/Andre rematch, and b: get Bigelow over) accomplished. ***. A surprisingly enjoyable PPV from an era when there were still a lot of stiffs in there. They actually put a lot of effort into how to make the eliminations and matches interesting, unlike today when they just throw people out there to improvise something because it doesn't matter in the long run."

WOMEN: This was basically a showcase for the Jumping Bomb Angels and the Glamour Girls fued. There was some decent wrestling once Rockin Robin, Moolah, Christanello and Dawn Marie left, the wrestling got pretty good. [***¼]. TAGS: Always a match that I was fond of whenever I watched it and this was no different. It could? ve been a massive clusterfuck but they booked the eliminations well and the paced the match perfectly. The Hart Foundation elimination was a huge shock and the Islanders did a great job at the end, putting a great performance only to be lose via cheating. [***¾]. MAIN EVENT: Good main event. Everyone played their roles and had short doses of time and quickly got out of there. Bam Bam Bigelow was tremendous at the end and was a terrific babyface who never gave up despite the odds. Hogan coming back was heelish but whatever. [***½]"

[10.0] "Just a great, innovative concept. However it was not simply thrown together, each match was meaningful and well crafted. The opener was all about the IC title. Honky was on his big run and the list of contenders was deep. The ending went over big time with the 3 v 1 pounding of Honky Tonk. The women's event was transitional. From Moolah to Sheri. From the brawling mat wrestling style of the veteran Glamour Girls, to the rapid action of the Jumping Bomb Angels. Velvet was always a good performer as well. Unnoticed by many newer fans, but this also marked the end of a 20+ year career of Donna Christianello, deservedly on a PPV. The Tag Team event was so loaded with talent and indicative of the importance of tag teams back in this time period. A nod also given to the Young Stallions, previously just enhancement talent who found their way on a PPV card and as one of the two surviving teams. Roma even eliminated the Hammer in memorable fashion. The Main Event, was the resurgence of Andre the Giant, soon to albeit briefly, hold the WWF belt. Bam Bam gets a big boost for a great showing and the very first, microscopic cracks to the invincibility of Hulkamania begin to develop."
