Like most WCW PPVs the opening matches are the better crops of matches but even the good ones struggle to be anything memorable and for some reason they're interspersed with throwaway matches like Wrath vs Meng and Lodi vs Perry Saturn. We've also been punished for some unknown reason because there's two Disco Inferno matches on this card, both crushingly mediocre. The Steiner Brothers feud meets more embarrassing plot points as Rick Steiner gets tricked by Buff Bagwell and wins the tag titles anyway and then beats his brother Scott in less than 5 minutes which makes Scott look pathetic. Scott Hall vs Kevin Nash and Bret Hart vs Sting are two matches that should write themselves but are so fucking boring and both have fucked finishes, one good and one bad but you'll never guess which one had the ending that wasn't pitiful. Hogan and Warrior have their Worst Match of the Year winning match which is definitely up there for worst Hogan matches I've seen next to The Doomsday Cage. Thankfully they save the best for last as DDP brings infamously overrated Goldberg to a pretty good almost great match which in true WCW fashion didn't play live on PPV because they didn't say they were going long to the provider. Wrath vs. Meng no one really cared until Wrath hit the meltdown on Meng which was pretty cool. Disco vs Juventud was a fun match, Disco is no way a cruiserweight though. Alex Wright vs Fit Finlay was random (unless the build was on WCW Saturday Night which I'm not watching) and boring. Lodi gets beaten by Saturn not surprised but confused why this happened on ppv. Disco has a way better match with Kidman. Gotta give Disco props for tonight. The Steiners storyline was so bad please make it end. Scott Hall vs Kevin Nash started really strong but fell apart after a few minutes. Bret Hart vs. Sting was fine compared to everything else I just experienced. What is there to say to the Warrior/Hogan match that hasn't been said? Neither man is in their prime and one is working injured. I know this wouldn't make much difference but maybe wait until the Warrior recovered from his injury then have the match. Luckily they didn't make that the end because Goldberg and DDP put on a classic. DDP had a 10 minute match and Goldberg looked great. Gotta give a extra point for the Halloween set. |

Wrath vs Meng, Wright vs Finlay, Saturn vs Lodi... What are we even doing here? They had some decent ones at the beginning, as Jericho with Raven had a good bout with a great pace and Disco Inferno of all people did a nice double duty, delivering two fine matches, but after that it went downhill with the main eventers and upper mid-carders. The Steiners' feud has been absolutely butchered and they made such a fool out of Rick, that even his win didn't save him in the fans' eyes. Hall vs Nash had this ridiculous angle of Scott's drinking problems, Bret and Sting clearly didn't care about their contest and Hogan vs Warrior was a disgrace of a match in terms of work, booking and structure. But thank God for the main event, as DDP and Goldberg put on a classic. Page knew how this match between two babyfaces should look and he made Goldberg look like million bucks, as both guys delivered probably their best match up to date. A fantastic way to end the show, but it was a struggle to get there. |

The extra 30 minutes we got on this show was mostly unnecessary and made the show feel like it was dragging. I could live with the Steiner Bros promo segments as they actually told a story throughout the night that was paid off in a match later on, so they served a purpose. Its not like there has to be 3 hours of just wrestling on one of these things, you can have promos and angles too, but they need to be used in moderation and they have to actually contribute to the show overall, otherwise theyre just flotsam in the ocean. The Nitro Girls dancing, Hogan yakking about whatever, Konnans music video (which was cut from the Network/Peacock version), the commentary team waffling on during multiple lulls in the action and some moments of just outright dead air at points didnt add anything of any real usefulness to the show and served only to drag things out so that WCW could get to a 3 hour plus run-time, as that was apparently so important to them. I can only assume that they thought that it represented giving the fans their moneys worth or something, but really all it did was take away from the show itself. Its a shame, as there was genuinely some good wrestling here. Raven and Jericho tore it up in the opener. Disco gave two creditable performances. The crowd might not have cared, but Wright Vs Finlay was a snug well-worked affair. The Steiner Brother melodrama was an entertaining Dog and Pony Show. Hall/Nash and Hart/Sting were hardly classics, but they werent terrible either, and the Main Event was an absolutely cracking outing. Yeah, Hogan Vs Warrior II was utter cow dung, but it was the only really awful match here, with everything else being either okay or great. Had WCW presented a leaner more focused show, then Halloween Havoc 1998 could have been a genuine thumbs up, even with the infamous Hogan/Warrior debacle. As it is though, the show only gets a thumbs in the middle from me. Theres some good stuff here, but the show as a whole has too many problems for me to give it a recommendation. Still though, at least it isnt as bad as Road Wild 98, Fall Brawl 98 and World War 3 98, so it broke the streak of misery if nothing else! |

(no doubt cut to bizarrely keep in all the Nitro Girls segments), so for that reason I'm not giving a show rating, and I'm only commenting on the matches I saw. TV title match was fast paced and epic, with lots of cool counters, this was probably Raven's best work in WCW. The Cruiserweight #1 contender & title matches were both good, but can't pick out any highlights, I just have always found winners who win a #1 contender's match and lose in the title match in the same night really strange, don't know why they don't leave that for the next night/PPV or something? The long winded Steiner feud ended in a whimper, as did The Outsider's fallout. Hart/Sting was underwhelming, Hogan/Warrior definitely wasn't good, but I also don't think it's as bad as some make it out to be. And finally the Main Event really is exceptional for a Goldberg match, and for a WCW main event for that matter. Clearly fans who bought the VHS were cheated like the fans on PPV were, unbelievable. |

WCW booked so many matches for this 3 hour time slot, and then they thought it was a good idea to stick in a bunch of Nitro Girls dance segments to fill up time along with a crappy Konnan music video that the people who were watching this live on PPV missed out on the DDP/Goldberg match because of the cut off time and WCW wound up giving the main event for free the following night on Nitro. Meng/Wrath Wright/Finlay, and Saturn/Lodi had no place on the card. This card looks like an overloaded WrestleMania when they really could have trimmed the fat. Stillm the best WCW PPV going back to Great American Bash 98. Probably the last good WCW PPV of 98. |

The PPV is legendary for the infamous Hogan v Warrior match, where Hogan somehow gets busted open and an attempt at a fireball goes awry, before Horace, of all people, comes in to interfere and give Hogan a win with one of the worst endings in wrestling history. Can't believe they built this feud up for MONTHS. The main main event was actually good for once, which is rare from WCW PPVs of this era. Goldberg and DDP put on a good show, with DDP trying to find an edge using his smarts and quickness while Goldberg actually sells stuff. How crazy is that? The opener between Raven and Jericho is also damn good, maybe even too good for an opener as they easily could've put Disco Inferno v Juvie at the start, but I'm still puzzled by the whole Raven tapping out quickly thing. Other than those highlights though, this was a shitshow. There's also Hall v Nash, which would be awful on its own but Nash gets busted open so we get the long-distance treatment for a while. I guess the big pumpkin and skeleton monster thing at the entrance was pretty neat. |

Sehr schön fand ich die gesamte Deko und wie man das Motto Halloween Havoc aufgespielt hat. Vor allem die Stage sah echt cool aus. 12 Matches, 03:15 Laufzeit und 3 Segmente, da kommt einiges zu kurz, allein in den ersten 70 Minuten gibt es 5 Matches und 3 Interviews mit Rick, Hogan und Scott Steiner. Opener war ganz nett und ich bin überrascht, dass Jericho schon damals eine Version seines bekannten Themes genutzt hat. Wrath vs. Meng nichts besonderes, tut keinem weh aber wäre eher was für Nitro gewesen. Disco Inferno vs. Juventud fand ich zu meiner Überraschung sogar ganz gut. Absolut ordentliches Match mit solidem Wrestling. Alex Wright vs. Finlay bekommt leider zu wenig Zeit und endet dann relativ unspektakulär nach einem Neckbraker. Lodi vs. Saturn war gar nichts. Totaler Müll. Dann gab es zum zweiten Mal an dem Abend Disco. Auch das Match fand ich in Ordnung aber etwas schwächer als gegen Juvi. Dann ging es leider WCW typisch bergab. Scott Steiner vs. Rick Steiner ist eher ein Angle als Match und hat mir gar nicht gefallen. Generell gibt es die ganze Show über etliche Low Blows, die allesamt unbehandelt bleiben. So auch hier, Scott Trott seinem Bruder bestimmt dreimal in die Eier und das während des Tag Matches. Am Ende setzt sich Rick gegen alle durch, gewinnt sogar die Tag Team Titel, was mir too much war. Kevin Nash vs. Scott Hall war ebenfalls nicht gut. Hatte hier fälschlicherweise auf eine Art Grudge Match gehofft aber naja, es ist WCW. Es gab anscheinend damals schon eine Alkohol-Story rund um Hall, die dem Match eher schadet. Die Punches von Hall sahen richtig gut aus aber sonst hat das Match wenig zu bieten, hat ein merkwürdiges Ende als Nach einfach den Ring verlässt und ziemlich schlecht, wenn man ehrlich ist. Bret Hart vs. Sting war erstaunlich langweilig. Bei den beiden erwarte ich einfach mehr. Vielleicht noch solide aber auch hier ein komisches Ende und für die beiden einfach zu wenig. Als hätte Hart keine Lust gehabt. Dann war es Zeit für das Rematch, Hogan vs. Warrior. Man hat ja schon viel darüber gehört wie schlecht es war, daher konnte ich nicht mehr enttäuscht werden. Die Fans hatten anfangs sogar noch Bock, obwohl man sehr schnell merkt, dass seit ihrem Match bei Wrestlemania über 8 Jahre vergangen sind und beide entsprechend gealtert sind. Anfangs würde ich fast noch sagen, dass es ein solide Altherren Catch ist, wobei es dann immer mehr abflacht und letztlich nach dem ersten Reg Bumb. Der echt schlecht aussah, total auseinander fällt. Am Ende passt gar nichts mehr und zu allem Überfluss verhunzt Hogan den Feuerball. Aus heutiger Sicht fast schon witzig aber letztendlich eher traurig. Der Main Event ist dann zu meiner Überraschung ziemlich gut. Goldberg ist ein Star und auch DDP ist absolut over. Echt gut und so endet die Show noch versöhnlich. |

Tatsächlich ist der Mainer aufgrund seines unerwarteten Verlaufes noch das Match, dass Spannungsbogen und Drama am besten bedient, auch wenn es nicht wirklich glänzt. Kurz danach folgen Opener, das Match um das Tag-Gold und erstaunlicherweise auch die beiden Disco-Matches auf den Plätzen. Der Rest dümpelt so vor sich hin, wobei besonders das seltsame Verhalten von Kevin Nash noch ein paar Fragezeichen aufwirft. Wie ich eingangs bereits sagte, bleibt uns das totale Fiasko, für das die WCW dieser Tage ja immer mal gut ist, erspart. Das hier ist unterm Strich immer noch ausreichend, aber bitte auch nicht mehr. Und dass Hart & Sting da gar nichts gebacken bekommen, ist wirklich peinlich. |

Jericho/Raven is good-ish, I suppose, though it's entirely unclear who the face is and the crowd isn't really sure how to react. Hogan comes out to cut a pointless promo, followed by a Meng/Wrath match which is not exactly bad but the crowd couldn't possibly care less. Juvi/Disco is decent but nothing notable, and certainly the wrong man won. Finlay/Wright is probably the 2nd best match of the night honestly, it's pretty good but extremely short. Saturn/Lodi is a squash, and Kidman/Disco is just bad, lots of Disco working on top where he is phenomenally boring. The Steiner stuff is just AWFUL. Rick Steiner looks catastrophically stupid for trusting Bagwell AGAIN, and then Rick wins the tag titles by himself? Who would push Rick Steiner this hard in 1998? ! ? And then there's a SECOND Bagwell swerve IN THE SAME SEGMENT. Just insanely bad. Hall/Nash is a horrible match filled with references to Hall's real life debilitating alcoholism. I'm amazed Hall is alive. The match is long and boring and then Nash just leaves. Horrible. Bret/Sting is incredibly dull, a testament to how bad Sting was by this time and how demotivated Bret was, a terrible boring match. Hogan/Warrior is famously bad and deserves to be, just awful. The main event is, finally, actually very good, a super fun match that the crowd just LOVES, but most of this show is pure crap. |

Dazu auch nooch ein Trash Finish. (-**. Da man erneut den Payoff aus meiner Sicht für die Fns versäumte. ) 9. Hall gegen Nash war auch nicht gut. Die Matches in der WWE waren glatt besser. Dazu die Alki Story und das bescheuerte Finish. (2 1/4*) 10. Hart gegen Sting. Eigentlich ein Dream Match für Starrcade oder WM. Leider läuft das Match so typisch WCW-mäßig ab. Warum lässt man die beiden nicht einfach ein normales Match bestreiten. (2 1/4*) 11. Hogan/Warrior 2. Enough said. Wird als ultimatives Return Match gehypt. Und dann sowas. Allein die Szene mit dem Spiegel. Und der Feuerball im Match der nicht fruchtet und Hogan sich selber verbrennt. Das Selling usw. Ich glaube bei einer Top Ten der schlechstesten WCW Matches bis dahin ist Hogan sicher am häufigsten dabei und das Match sicher auch. (-*****) 12. ME siehe Guide. (3 1/4*) Ja. Danach folgen zwei schwächere Matches ehe es mit Kidman vs Disco Inferno wieder ein ordentliches Match gibt. Man kann sagen die Under- und der erste Teil der Midcard waren durchaus o. k.. Dann wird es aber gruselig. Das Match der Steiner Brothers ist kompletter Booking-Bullshit, dafür wrestlerisch noch ertragbar. Ganz im Gegensatz zu dem Nash vs Hall und Hitman vs Sting-Elend. Scott Hall war voll wie eine Haubitze und torkelte stellenweise nur durch den Ring. Das Match sofern man es so nenen kann war unterirdisch. Keine Matchstory, kaum Aktionen. Ähnliches gilt für Bret vs Sting. Eine Schande wenn man bedenkt wieviel Potenzial in diesem Match steckte. Aber auch hier regiert der Booking-Blödsinn der WCW. Das Hogan vs Warrior kein Leckerbissen wird war klar, aber ein bißchen mehr als minutenlang durch den Ring tigern ohne was zu machen, hätte es schon sein dürfen. Der Main Event war zwar kurz, aber eine echte positive Überraschung. Hatte von dem Match nichts erwartet und bekam dann doch einen würdigen Main Event und eines der besten Goldberg-Matches, die ich bisher gesehen habe. Insgesamt kann ich die Show wrestlerisch nicht empfehlen, dafür war die zweite Hälfte einfach viel zu schwach. Aber von der Starpower war das schon beeindruckend. Umso mehr enttäuscht das Ergebnis. |

By this point, though the NWO (and its offshoots) had moved into overkill territory, and it really showed all over the upper card, such as in what should have been a dream match between Bret Hart and Sting but ended up as an example of Bret's overall lackluster WCW run, the Nash-Hall stuff (which ran into discomfort as a big part of Hall's story played on his real-life personal issues), and, of course, the legendarily-awful Hogan-Warrior rematch. A mixed bag to be sure. |

| 62 | 23.06.2016 | chaos1984 | 7.0 | Zu aufgeblähte Card. Matches wie Wrath gegen Meng oder Wright gegen Finlay hätte es wegen Belanglosigkeit nicht gebraucht. Nicht dass jetzt ausgerechnet die Beiden das Lowlight waren, aber die Zuschauer waren daran nicht interessiert. Davon ab ist der Event aber super kurzweilig. Die Kulisse ist die schönste Havoc Deko, die WCW je hatte. Die Crowd war auch super dabei. Das WCW TT Title Match wird von dieser tollen Crowd super getragen. Alle wollen sehen, das Rick seinen Bruder in die Finger bekommt. Dann der Turn von Bagwell, mit denen jeder rechnete, aber Rick holt dennoch den Sieg und bekommt sein Match gegen Scott. Super Unterhaltsam. Unfassbar wie over hier Wrestler wie Raven, Jericho, beide Steiners und Bagwell waren. Doch dann, als die Big Matches anstehen, dann verflacht der Event leider. Sting gegen Hart ist enttäuschend. Hall gegen Nash lebte zumindest von der Konstelation und der Story, mehr aber auch nicht. Hogan gegen Warrior ist ein Desaster. Diese 3 Matches mit diesen Leistungen verhindern dass hier einer der besten WCW PPV`s ever gezeigt wird. Was bei 1, 2 Matches weniger, und vernünftiger Leistung in den angesprochenen 3 Matches durchaus drinne war. Goldberg gegen DDP war ein gelungener Main Event der den Gesamteindruck dann wieder deutlich anhebt. |

Hier fiel mir mal wieder auf, die abwechslungsreich und vielschichtig die damaligen WCW-PPVs im Vergleich zu den eher gleichförmigen PPVs der WWF waren. Cooles Opening Match und Wrath sah hier körperlich und wrestlerisch ziemlich gut aus, ich war überrascht. Disco gegen Juvi war auch gut, wie auch Wright gegen Finlay. Kidman vs. Disco Inferno auch nicht schlecht. Die Steiners gegeneinander zu sehen fand ich cool. Hall gegen Nash ging okay, Bret Hart gegen Sting war dagegen nicht so toll, wurde aber noch von Hogan vs. Warrior unterboten. Netter Main Event, der die Show gut abschloss. |

Finlay and too much Nitro Girls performances but there were also couple of classics like Raven VS. Jericho opener worth rating of ****, blockbuster main-event between Dallas Page & Goldberg, which really interested me with it's intensity, crowd being into match and great underdog role played By DDP. **** rating for that match. Also this card had couple of watchable midcard bouts like Bret Hart VS. Sting, Bagwell & Steiner VS. Giant & Steiner, which could had been worth more than ** 1/2 rating. But luckily there were cruiserweight matches between Inferno & Guerrera and Inferno & Kidman. Huge props to Inferno for being able to wrestle two matches worth *** 1/2 rating in the same night. Then there was this Hall VS. Nash showdown, which could had delivered more, if only WCW hadn't been so lazy about this feud and tried to make something out of this. The match itself wasn't worth more than **. Hogan VS. Warrior was something I barely wanted to watch or make rating about. But it went something like this: handtwisting, Hogan irishwhipping Warrior and running to wrong ring-rope, ref-bump, Hogan whipping Warrior with weight-belt, Hogan botching that fireball-spot and then comes the unclean finish. That was it. All that just to massage Hogan's ego. Really terrible and awkward match not even worth rating of *. Despite this, I still managed enjoy the event with it's ups and downs, so I recommend it for others to watch. |

Einerseits hatte man einige völlig unnötige Interviewsegmente, die mehr genervt haben, als Stimmung für die weiteren Matches zu erzeugen. Auch kann man über das Booking des PPVs auch in der Undercard wahrlich streiten. Dennoch habe ich mich insgesamt gar nicht so schlecht unterhalten gefühlt und bis auf Hogan vs Warrior war auch kein längeres schlechtes Match dabei. Daher gebe ich dem ganzen Mal sechs Punkte, auch wegen dem unerwartet guten Main Event. Wäre ich allerdings zur damaligen Zeit US-Kunde gewesen, wäre ich sicherlich stocksauer gewesen und meine Bewertung würde wesentlich schlechter ausfallen. Da es die Show ja aber mittlerweile mit vollem Main Event zu sehen gibt, beziehe ich meine Note mal wirklich allein auf den Event. |

Das muss aber ein sehr exklusiver Zirkel sein, denn abseits von Bischoff und Co. war das Feedback auf den Halloween Havoc 1998 desaströs. Da hat man schon 3 Stunden zu Verfügung und schafft es trotzdem den PPV derart zu überziehen, dass ein Hauptteil der US-Kunden das Ende des Main Events gar nicht sehen kann. Auch wenn man das verjobben von Raven zu diesem Zeitpunkt ja schon längst gewohnt war, ist die Midcard trotzdem durchzogen von fragwürdigen Booking - allen voran dem Tag Team Kampf mit nur halben Tag Team Champions und der völlig unnötigen Hogan vs. Warrior Neuauflage. Kaum weniger schlimm ist das Ergebnis des Hauptkampfes: Goldberg vs. DDP war zwar an sich ein gutes Match, aber bei dem Aufbau, den man speziell in DDP 1998 investiert hat, hat man hier wieder einmal den richtigen Zeitpunkt für einen klaren Titelwechsel verpasst - was ein Wunder ist, wenn man bedenkt wie oft man den WCW Titel an sich wechseln ließ. Mit Starrcade 97 hat die WCW es verpasst im PPV-Geschäft an der WWF vorbeizuziehen, mit Halloween Havoc 1998 hat man sich den PPV-Markt auf ewig verbaut. |
