Instead of the usual rabid racist crowd at the hog wild shows, this crowd was pretty quiet throughout. I was expecting more out of some of the matches too like Konnan and Rey should've been great but it ended up being about boring limb work"

And there's a reason for it. Despite the great scenery and atmosphere, there just wasn't much here outside of Hogan getting his title back in a very mediocre match. I thought the opening tag match was the best of the night. Everything else was a downer."

[4.0] "I liked Hog Wild last year due to the original setting, but this one didn't feel special anymore, plus they didn't have anything hot enough to make all these fans care, which was especially visible in the preliminary matches. Konnan and Rey were the dumbest of them all for trying to make a match all about working the leg with the most casual crowd possible and they got what they should have expected, which is silence. Wright vs Jericho was easily the best match of the night, as they not only got some decent reactions, but also the work itself was as smooth as it could possibly be. Flair vs Syxx was also very solid, plus Steiners vs Outsiders was alright, apart for the rotten finish. And the main event was just too slow with Hogan taking forever with his heat part and even though I love him as a heel it was just too much in this environment. So a lot of matches that just had no right to get this type of a crowd going, so it's weird that they didn't bring guys like Ultimo, Regal or just any of the luchadors for this type of event."

[4.0] "Kind of a middling effort - while no matches here are outright bad, neither do any stand out as specifically good either. Wright vs Jericho, Flair vs Syxx and DDP vs Hennig are the best of the lot - I'd probably pick the DDP match as my favorite (perhaps partly as he was my favorite in WCW when I was watching at the time), but all three are about of equal decent quality. Konnan vs Rey is a solid example of Mysterio's selling abilities. The Horsemen vs Jarrett & Malenko had some decent stuff when Benoit was in on the Horsemen side, and a decent tandem finishing sequence from him and Mongo, and the Tag Title bout between the Steiners and Outsiders had some decent stuff too in between a fair amount of stalling. Giant vs Savage wasn't much of a match, but Mach certainly put Giant over huge. The Harlem Heat-Vicious & Delicious opener certainly happened. The main event was a lot of your classic NWO overbooking with the end result of returning to the status quo as Hogan takes back the title he'd dropped to Luger less than a week before. Many of the cons of holding these shows at the Sturgis rally - notably, that WCW received no live gate from them - have been discussed, but I will say, the aesthetics for Hog/Road Wild were always very cool."

[3.0] "Complete waste of time, WCW hyped this one up as a must-watch but nothing substantial happened at all. Nearly every match is a sluggish drag devoid of any chemistry, the exception being whenever Dean Malenko and Chris Benoit fought during their tag match. The crowd was largely dead and I dont blame them. The episode of Nitro preceding this event where Lex beat Hogan for the title set the bar too high for this to not have disappointed either way. Still, it gets a 3/10 because none of the matches are flat-out embarrassing which was a rarity for WCW PPVs around this time."

The main event was fine, don't see why everyone doesn't like it other than Hogan won the belt back, would have liked to see Luger champ just a little longer."

The shows from Sturgis that started during daylight were rarely great, as neither the wrestlers nor the crowd were fully into it, and the backstage nonsense made this worse than usual. Really, this show was everything that was bad about NWO era WCW."

[6.0] "First time viewing a WCW Hog/Road Wild PPV, and I gotta say it's an interesting spectacle to view, the mass of people and the location itself was impressive, but it just felt like one big tourist infomercial (and fanservice for Easy E). The matches on Swerve Wild-...uh I mean Road Wild were all pretty solid for the most part, really nothing terrible here at all. However, a lot of the finishes sucked and had tons of swerves. It also kinda looked like most of the guys weren't giving it their all for, a not-100% wrestling fan audience (maybe I'm wrong though). The Engine revvings really drowned out the commentators sometimes too, which also sucked. MOTN for me was Konnan/Rey - with Konnan methodically working over Rey's leg. Rey looked like he botched his springboard move (Moonsault) but even that got worked into more leg selling, so impressive stuff there. The Jarrett hot tag into instant momentum-killing swerve left me speechless quite frankly, I've never seen such a thing ever in 20 years of being a wrestling fan. And of course the World Heavyweight Championship would be defended in front of a 0$ gate, this is so WCW, I'm almost thankful for Vince Russo for getting rid of this event. Watch this show for the atmosphere above everything else."

[9.0] "Yet another highly underrated WCW PPV. The crowd leaves something to be desired, true, but it's offset by the beautiful scenery and unique feel of the venue. The opening tag match is excellent, particularly Booker and Norton, and Jacqueline joining Harlem Heat was a great move. Mysterio/Konnan was likely the match of the night and certainly the best Konnan singles match that I can think, they told a great story and worked in some great action. The Horsemen tag match was interesting, good action and a clever bit of character based booking with Jarrett. Benoit also looked like a million bucks and Mongo did enough good stuff to make you think he's a little underrated, or at least over-hated. Wright/Jericho was decent, though Jericho had not quite clicked yet, and Syxx/Flair was an excellent high energy bout between a hot young gun and an aging veteran. Hennig/DDP is excellent as well, Hennig is not quite as good as his WWF peak but he still brings a lot, and DDP is way hot at this time. Savage/Giant is an ok bout and then the nWo/Steiners tag boasts some really excellent action too, albeit with a slightly lame finish. Lastly, Luger/Hogan is not as good as their Nitro bout but it's still enjoyable if you can accept the simple but effective style and the inevitable shenanigans. Frankly, I would say there are no bad matches on this card, and while there's not a strong MOTYC, it's still a lot of fun to watch."

Anyway, there are some decent matches throughout, but nothing worth a recommendation, because the biker theme suuucks. Although the announce team usually looks hilarious at these events, which is a plus..."
