Styles has been with WWE for 10 years and wrestled Cena a number of times so it's easy to forget this, but I cannot stress just how much Styles vs. Cena was considered a dream match for 15 years while both were at the top of separate companies. AJ Styles vs. John Cena was a dream match that actually lived up to the hype, Charlotte and Sasha had a nice match. The other mid-card matches weren't bad at all, aside from the IC Title match which was just put in an unwinnable situation. The main thing dragging down the show is just how unremarkable the main event was. Orton vs. Lesnar was viewed as a dream match at the time, but now it's 9 years later and we never talk about it. We still talk about Cena vs. Styles, which was on the same show. Orton vs. Lesnar didn't live up to its place on the card. The Universal title should've went on last. MVP goes to AJ Styles for having the match of the night with John Cena. |

| 16 | 30.07.2024 | ceasara63 | 7.0 | In the lead-up to SummerSlam 2024, I went back and watched some old SummerSlam pay-per-views, beginning with this one. It was the first time I had re-watched this pay-per-view since I first watched it as it happened back in 2016. And overall, for me, it was a nice trip down memory lane. I got a lot of nostalgia for this time period, I was growing up around this time and all that. But does it hold up as a show? Overall, I'd say yes. Like, obviously there's some negatives here; the fact it's four hours long, The Miz vs. Apollo Crews, Gallows & Anderson vs. The New Day, they aren't amazing matches, and in the case of Ambrose vs. Ziggler, kind of boring, lackluster and forgettable. But, on the other hand, I really enjoyed the opening between Jericho and Owens vs. Enzo and Cass, it was super nostalgic for me to go back and remember just how over Enzo and Cass were in 2016-2017, and of course this is the early blossoming of the fantastic Jericho-Owens pairing. Sasha and Charlotte was botchy on occasion, but they recovered well from it, and put on a good match. Styles vs. Cena is a phenomenal (get it? ) match, the near-falls were incredible, and as a child who was so infatuated with John Cena, this storyline meant so much to me, I hated AJ Styles then. The six-woman tag team match was a fun, inoffensive showcase; Bálor vs. Rollins was a great match, and props to Bálor for carrying on the match through the injury. It's a shame he had to vacate the championship, I would've loved to see where he could've gone with it, and how his star would've continued to rise, but unfortunately he has never recovered that main event position. And the main event, Lesnar vs. Orton. This match is somewhat divisive from what I've seen, some people think it's okay, some people think it's bad. I enjoyed the match overall, but the finish was a very deflating and unsatisfying end to the show. But for what the match is up until that point, I think it's pretty good. For me, the positives outweigh the negatives on this show, and the really good stuff is 100% worth checking out. I'm ranking it a 7/10. |

When did Vince get it in his brain that somehow, longer meant better? Because it doesnt! At worst, it was a disappointing show. The WWE title match couldve been a lot better, but it just wasnt. Maybe they didnt click. And they hyped the hell out of that main event only to do that Really? But with 2 great title matches and one incredible Match of the Year candidate, you cant help but have a soft spot for this show. At least to me. |

AJ vs Cena is by far one of my favorite matches of all time I like it even more than the one at the Rumble correct result as well. Finn vs Seth was great despite the crowd being distracted over a stupid belt. Brock vs Randy wasn't bad and then had an insanely shocking ending. Raw Women's title match was really well wrestled despite the incorrect result. Hell even the worst rated match Apollo vs Miz was just a mediocre ic title filler match. |

Charlotte und Sasha Banks machen nicht viel aus der ihnen zur Verfügung stehenden Zeit und haben ungewöhnlich viele Botches drin gemessen an ihrer technischen Klasse. Miz vs. Apollo Crews ist durchschnittlich. AJ Styles und John Cena haben dann das mMn beste Match des ganzen Jahres und somit auch der Show. Nach diesem modernen Klassiker ist die Crowd aber ziemlich ausgelaugt. Bei Cena und Styles hat man ein wunderbar cleanes passing-of-the-torch Szenario auf die Beine gestellt. Die 3 folgenden Matches, inklusive des WWE-Titelmatches, sind allesamt unspektakulärer Durchschnitt, nichts Schelchtes, aber eben auch nichts was man gesehen haben sollte. Fin Balor und Seth Rollins haben das - mit Abstand - zweitbeste Match des Abends. Hier stimmt Dramatik und Technik, schade dass Balor sich verletzte und man nie sehen konnte, wie die WWE ihn als Champion gebooked hätte. Der Main Event ist insbesondere aufgrund des Finishs erinnerungswürdig und für mich insgesamt solide. Dieser Summerslam hat Höhen aber bietet sehr viel skippable Content, da man 2 sehr gute Matches auf der Card hat und kein wirklicher Ausfall dabei ist, sind 7 Punkte insgesamt angemessen. |

This match is one of the best examples I've seen of working through an injury, from both competitors.... I don't know how no one gives it credit on this. The match starts blistery and very technically proficient, but you can clearly see that after Charlotte drops Sasha in the middle of a turnbuckle spot that Sasha legitimately hurts something and the entire match changes. What's great about this is that Charlotte immediately heels it up from this point. She targets the hell out of Sasha's back with strikes, with a gory special, with backbreakers. And Sasha sells this brilliantly as well.... she's constantly clutching her back after every move, and you can see a couple instances where she slams the mat with her hand because she's pissed at herself for getting injured so early in the match. It worked the crowd to perfection, as you can hear the swell of applause for Sasha to overcome the injury getting bigger and bigger as the match goes on. I don't know if Sasha's back is actually what she hurt, or if she hurt something else and redirected the attention to her back, but it's clear that she hurt something and that Charlotte targeted her back in a way that kept her safe enough to finish the match while still getting in a number of spots. The razor's edge reversal was a thing of beauty. Natural Selection reversal into the Bank Statement was also very creative. Many people didn't like the finish given Sasha's brief reign (which is an understandable complaint) and the pin coming so unexpectedly, but in the context of the match and Sasha's back being injured, it made a lot of sense for Sasha to overexert her back in the Bank Statement, and then be unable to kick out of a pin where Charlotte laid on her and required her back muscles to get out. Overall, an excellent and underrated match. Charlotte v. Sasha: 83/100. Other matches: unrated. |

Alles andere außer ein Sieg von Jericho und Owens wäre für mich ein Rätsel gewesen. Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks auch Total Schwach. Eine ziemlich langweilige anfangs Phase von diesem PPV. The Miz vs. Apollo Crews hätte ruhig mehr Zeit bekommen können. In diesen 6 Minuten haben sie aber ein ganz Guten Job gemacht. AJ Styles vs. John Cena dann ein Hammer Geiles Match und Styles besiegt Cena Clean ohne Club oder andere Mittel (****1/2). WWE Tag Team Title Match Schwach. Dean Ambrose vs. Dolph Ziggler fand ich ganz Gut (***1/2). Six-Man Tag Team Match Total langweilig und hätte man auch skippen können. Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins war jetzt nicht das beste Match an dem Abend aber ein Historischer Moment für Finn Balor. Er wurde der erste Universal Champion in der Geschichte der WWE, obwohl er ihn ein Tag später für Vakant erklären musste (****). Main Event dann halt nicht das beste Wrestling Match. Lesnar gewinnt am Ende durch TKO und Orton fängt stark an zu Bluten. Mit diesen Szenen endet SummerSlam. Fazit: Ein Solider SummerSlam. |

AJ/cena was very disappointing and the most overrated match in 2016. Total cena indy movefest formula with over the top nearfalls. This sucked*. AJ winning clean was great. Tag title match was also trash *. World title match was boring with no heat at all *. 6 man women was just a match, too *. Nikki's comeback was nice moment. Balor/rollins was a decent raw match, could have been better, but still disappointing **3/4. Balor winning again was nice. ME was another disappointment. Way too short for the so called dream match. Lesnar again just suplexed over and over again and the finish was awful **1/2. Overall, nothing outstanding must watch here. 2 points for AJ and Balor winning. |

Opener ist da, klar sorgen die Hometown Boys für Stimmung doch das Ganze wirkt zu unsauber und insgesamt einfach nicht gut. Women Match ist riskant gestaltet, wirklich schnell und mit schönen Spots, dazu einem sehr schockierendem Finish und somit das 2. Beste Match (***¼). Miz besiegt Crews während man auf Toilette sein könnte. Dann kommt auch schon der Kracher der Nacht. AJ&Cena machen einen WWE MOTYC und auch wenn ich denke, dass Owens und Zayn ein besseres hatten, war das hier genial. Schöne Transitions, wunderbare Atmosphäre und ein schöner Moment für AJ (****¼ + MOTN). TagTeam Match ist auf TV-Niveau, dadurch auch das Finish. WH-Match ist der Beweis, wieso man diese beiden Wrestler nicht gegen einander stellen sollte. Insgesamt ist das träge, langsam und schlicht uninteressant, von der Zeit aber "ausreichend" (**). 6-Women Tag interessiert ebenfalls niemanden, trotzdem sorgt Nikki's Return für den wohl besten Pop der Nacht. Auch das UV-Match ist sehr schwach. Hier spielt keine Crowd hinzu und beide vergessen zu sellen (**¼). US Match fällt aus und der ME geht grade mal länger als 10 Minuten. Es ist einfach ungenießbar, von vorne bis hinten ein sehr schlechtes Match in jedem Belangen (*¾). Insgesamt ein ordentliches und ein sehr gutes Match, ansonsten viel und sehr viel schwaches: 3. 89/10 |

Ortons Leistung war echt schwach (Sellte dei Suplexen ganz schelcht) und Lesnar hat im Ring auch echt nachgelassen. 7 Punkte |

Die Damen geben dann wirklich alles, leider missglückt auch so einiges, aber dafür liefern die beiden auch so manchen spektakulären Spot (9/10). The Miz vs. Apollo Crews ist dann eher ein Filler, aber doch recht munter (6/10). John Cena ist – und das sage ich ohne jede Polemik – immer noch am besten, wenn er andere over bringt und clean verliert. Das Match ist wie ein *****-Match angelegt: besonnener Beginn, schrittweise Steigerung der Dramatik, nichtalltägliche Aktionen, Finisherorgie am Schluss – ganz großer Sport (12/10). Das Tag-Team-Title-Match ist gut und die richtige Überbrückung zwischen zwei Big Matches (7/10). Ganz anders als Styles und Cena legen Ambrose und Ziggler gleich richtig los und ziehen dieses Tempo bis zum Ende durch; großartiges Match, wenn auch mMn nicht so episch wie Styles vs. Cena (11/10). Das Diven-Tag-Team-Match ist sehr unsauber geworkt. Da Carmella sehr viel Zeit im Ring hat, wird dieser Eindruck noch verstärkt, da sie keine einzige Aktion richtig sellen kann (4/10). Der Universal Title wird mit einem würdigen Match eingeführt, was er letzten Endes wert ist, wird die Zukunft zeigen, Balor und Rollins liefern in jedem Fall ab (10/10). Das Match zwischen Rusev und Roman Reigns wird durch ein Segment ersetzt. Das ist mal etwas anderes und es gefällt mir aufgrund der Intensität auch ganz gut, schade, dass am Ende wieder einmal Roman Reigns triumphieren darf (6/10). Der ME sollte sicherlich anders enden als auf diese Weise. Generell bin ich sehr dafür, dass auch mal wieder eine härtere Gangart in der WWE gefahren wird und nicht alles so abgestimmt ist, dass auch Kindergartenkinder bedenkenlos zugucken können, aber wenn es so endet, ist das sicher nicht in irgendjemandes Interesse. Das passiert eben, wenn man Lesnar von der Leine lässt: er beweist abermals, dass bei ihm immer die Gefahr besteht, dass sich jemand ersthaft verletzt. Ohne Wertung. Gesamt: 7, 89. |

Solides Match (***). Sasha vs. Charlotte startet gut, sie bügeln die 2 Botches wunderbar aus & binden sie gut in die Matchstory ein! Dazu gab es nette Spots, schöne Konterserien & nette Nearfalls in einer sehr guten Schlussphase. Starkes Match (***½)! Crews/Miz war zu kurz bei dem Matchaufbau, schwach für ein IC Title Match (*½). Styles vs. Cena, siehe Guide (****¾+). TT Titel Match war reiner Bullshit (*½). Ambrose/Ziggler war irgendwie komisch aufgebaut, aber ich mochte es. Ambrose wirkte "anders" als sonst. Schlussphase war gut, Finish gefiel mir sehr. Insgesamt sehr solide (***¼). Nikki ist back, freue mich sehr für sie! Das Match dann hat mich positiv überrascht, war echt in Ordnung (**¼). Universal Title sieht nicht so geil aus. Rollins & Balor starten wunderbar & schön actionreich mit Bezug auf letzte RAW. Es gab viele krasse Spots, hohe Spannung & nette Movesequenzen. Dazu göttliche Nearfalls - Gods Last Gift - in einer großartigen Schlussphase. Extrem starkes Match (****)! RR/Rusev super gelöst, perfektes Booking! Super Segment! Der ME war dann irgendwie komisch. Es passte irgendwie schon zusammen. Als PPV Ende war es unangebracht. Dennoch sehr solides Match (***¼) Insgesamt sind das dann 6, 53 von 10 Punkten, belasse es jedoch bei 6 Punkten - 'befriedigend'. |

Women's-Titelmatch ist sehr solide mit einigen starken Szenen. Zwar ist der rasche Titelverlust Sashas ärgerlich, aber angesichts ihrer Verletzung verständlich. Das Finish ist jedoch merkwürdig (***). IC-Titelmatch ist lachhaft kurz und was Crews in diesem Match zu suchen hat, weiß wohl niemand (*3/4). Styles/Cena dann glasklares MotN und ein MotY-Kandidat. Die erste Finisher-Passage kommt für meinen Geschmack zwar zu schnell, aber das Match steigert sich immer weiter bis zu einem grandiosen und hochdramatischen Finale, was auch die Matchstory genial fortführt. Weltklasse (****1/2). Tag-Titelmatch dann der Cooldown, was angesichts der relativ kurzen Matchzeit, des Stewart-Unsinns und des blöden Finishs auch diesen Zweck erfüllt (**). Ambrose/Ziggler eine ziemliche Enttäuschung, auch wenn Ambrose' heeliges Verhalten hier doch zu gefallen weiß (**3/4). 6-Woman-Tag ist halt da. Nettes Comeback von Nikki Bella (*3/4). Balor/Rollins stark, mehr dazu im Guide (***1/2). Main Event ist eigentlich eine Frechheit, hat aber (wie jedes Lesnar-Match) doch gute Momente. Dennoch mit die größte Enttäuschung des Abends, v. a. ohne Goldberg-Auftritt (**1/2). Ein sensationelles und ein sehr gutes Match sind für einen SummerSlam definitiv zu wenig, von daher nur 5 Punkte. |

Universal Title Match war schlechter als erwartet und die Crowd war vom hässligen Titel auch abgelenkt. Weiterhin ist sonst nix besonders auffällig, ach ja der ME war nicht mal nix, nicht ma annähernd ME würdig. |
