12.10.2025 | autismdragon | 7.0 | Final Thoughts: 7/10 show overall for me. Top three matches were all fun to watch and see through modern eyes. MOTN was Piper/Valentine, but the World Tag Team Title match was close. Main event slightly disappointed due to Kiniski's involvement, but the atmosphere of it was great. Match of the undercard was Slater/Orton vs Wahoo and Mark Youngblood, which was actually pretty great. Butcher/Colon was the big stinker on the card for me. Charlie Brown vs Kabuki was also rough, but had more entertainment value. Sullivan/Lewin vs Weaver/McGhee surprised as a decent gem. And I enjoyed Rufgus R Jones and Bugsy's antics even if I can't rate the match that highly. Production had some issues to iron out. Too many interviews with the same people and Dusty overly inserting himself into events (one appearance would have sufficed, though I understand the initial one had production issues) also stand out as issues. Commentary was good if not energetic. I really enjoyed looking back at this event from before my time and look forward to seeing how Starrcade '84 pans out.
17.09.2025 | BillySpears | 9.0 | This is a show I like to go back to. I think 1983 had a definite feel to it, syndication was starting to become a bigger thing and wrestling was on the cusp of the grittiness that was the 70s territory days and the family-friendliness that was on the horizon with WWF. 83 brought bigger stadiums and crowds, but with the attitudes of the years that came before it. I really like watching any wrestling shows from 1983 and Starrcade 83 was the best representation of the overall feel of the year.

19.06.2025 | Wreditor | 6.0 | This pre-Wrestlemania pay-per-view definitely hasn't aged well but it helps set the template for a lot of the supercards of the 1980s. Moreso than the early WWE pay-per-views, they make the matches feel like the endings of storylines rather than just attractions. Sometimes that works to make the matches seem more exciting, sometimes not-so-much. The matches that made my Headcanon are: Abdullah The Butcher's bloody encounter with Carlos Colon, Piper and Valentine's dog collar match and post-match brawl, and the excellent Steamboat & Youngblood's tag match with the Briscos. The main event was a bit too slow, and while there are some fun moments in some of the tag matches, I didn't find them nearly as engaging as the incredibly hot crowd at the event.
31.05.2025 | WU20 | 8.0 | Good show. It was a significant event in the history of wrestling, which helped to change the landscape. The torch was passed to the next face Ric Flair. The matches were pretty good overall and The after match brawls were entertaining. There were also blood and hardcore things. (****)

24.02.2025 | GimliJr | 6.0 | The start of the card was clearly mediocre, but the last 4 matches were quite decent, especially the last three. The dog collar wasn't the most incredible in the ring, but as the stipulation hadn't been used until that evening, the historical aspect gave it a special cachet. Finally, the main event, without being exceptional, gave a good clash whose whole evening contributed to create this particular atmosphere. Outside the match, we had a lot (too many) post-match attacks, which added a touch of violence, but probably on too many occasions. I particularly enjoyed the little backstage segments, which allowed us to look back on the evening's matches, but above all reinforced the tension between the NWA champion and his challenger. Good use of the "ceiling view" camera during the evening. The atmosphere during the main event entrances was also noteworthy. The atmosphere was quite good for the rest of the show. And let's not forget Dusty Rhodes, who makes it clear that he'll be waiting in the wings for the winner. In-ring quality: 3.75/5. Non-match angles and segments: 0.75/3. Bonus/Malus: none. Total: 5.75/10. Show seen on WWE Network.

Even new ones with Matt cardona and Nick Aldis etc. but ya Barry windham and ric flair and all the other amazing nwa wrestlers like Harley race, terry funk, la knight, Ricky steamboat etc |

04.08.2024 | JacquesRougeauCanHaveMyWife | 7.0 | A great show that even though had some technical issues the wrestling part really delivered. Apart from Brown vs Kabuki and Abdullah vs Colon nothing here really stank, plus the build to the main event throughout the whole show was great. The opener was decent, the second Tag Team Match had some impressive work from Kevin Sullivan, Orton & Slater vs Youngblood & McDaniel was the second best match on the show with some fantastic work from the heel team and the Tag Team Titles match was another solid team bout with Steamboat just being a joy to watch. Piper vs Valentine was the match of the night for me with a fantastic structure and a brilliant work from both guys, while the main event was ruined a bit by Kiniski's horrible refereeing, but at least both Flair and Race delivered in the wrestling department. Also a lot of phenomenal promo work from Dusty from start to finish.
27.07.2024 | faskalasuchus | 7.0 | 7.3 out of 10 a legendary show definitely better than the inferior inaugural wrestler by wwf 2 big flaws though the ref interfering in flair v race was awful and the post match beatdowns are repetitive & and oh yeah there where a few below 3 star matches here but that doesn't hurt too much.
24.07.2024 | bonghitter | | Ric Flair and Harley Race in cage ....pure gold...young Steamboat. Piper and Valentine, very kool to see. 7 out of 10
23.07.2024 | Zak22 | 4.0 | This is a bad show. It is poorly paced and it features multiple sub - 4/10 matches. The first match and TV title match were disgracefully bad. The dog collar, world tag team and World Heavyweight title matches gave some good entertainment but none of them were exactly all time great matches. Also, to many tag matches, it gets repetitive and boring. I will say the blue canvass with yellow "NWA" lettering is one of my favourite ring canvasses of all time, feels classy and looks great.

18.07.2024 | Open The Vault | 5.0 | NWA's first ever Starrcade event ends up being a very hit-or-miss show for anyone who decides to watch but in terms of historical significance this was absolutely huge. Big money matches like Valentine & Piper, Flair & Race & The Briscos vs. Youngblood & Steamboat actually delivers so well here. The first half of the card is very skippable as nothing much really happens during it. The second half picks up and carries Starrcade '83 to the finish line. [**1/2]

29.05.2024 | cjm550506 | 7.0 | The in-ring action really picks up with Piper/Valentine, but of the undercard matches Orton & Slater vs. Youngblood & Wahoo was okay and it worked into the main event a bit as Orton & Slater faced allies of Flair after collecting Harley Race's bounty for attacking the Nature Boy. Piper/Valentine is the real show-stealer, The NWA Tag title match is good classic wrasslin' and the main event has two of the best of all time but keeps getting interrupted by terrible officiating. Still for what it was for the time and what it meant as a new chapter of pro wrestling's history you can't discount its place as a great moment in the history of the sport.

23.12.2023 | RosVer | 7.0 | It's been 40 years since Starrcade 1983, the first ever PPV. In comparison to the WWF events of the time, there aren't any filler matches. Obviously some have more gravity than others, but overall this is not a one or two match show. Having said that, it's a show of two halves. The first is a bumpy one, consisting of average action and uninspiring finishes. Things pick up for the second half with the bigger stars putting in the work to deliver a better showing. The most important matches of the card meet the expectations and make for some feelgood moments. Commentary is a big and positive surprise as Bob Caudle and Gordon Solie offer an informative announcing and put over the stories and the matches. A surprisingly subdued Ric Flair and lots of sweaty men make for the backstage interviews being pretty entertaining. They all build anticipation for the matches. Production was pretty average, but it's 1983 so the benefit of the doubt is there. Overall, a pretty good and important show. MOTN goes to Piper vs. Valentine.

It certainly has some production issues, but the production still isn't bad overall. Not a good show at all, but an oddly charming one. |

13.07.2023 | Rjepic1 | 8.0 | I started a big wrestling watch-through late last year, and started with this show. It genuinely shocked me how much I enjoyed this show. The Dog Collar match is of course a standout. I enjoyed the tag matches. Flair/Race served its purpose well, but I thought it could've been better. Overall, this was a very solid show.
17.06.2023 | Roots | 7.0 | Pretty good show, overall. One thing that stood out to me is how the crowd is hot. It must has been a hell of a time to be a wrestling fan. Every babyface is over (even Charlie Brown seems to be a national hero) and every heel is shouted down. Simple as that. Women, children... Everybody's yelling to encourage his favorite or to curse the bad guys. There was a certain candor that is sorely lacking nowadays. That early eighties material also have this special grain that I particularly like. So, I even enjoy the basic matches, due to this special touch. The gimmicks, the outfits, the way they build their matches, even the wrestlers faces were different, at the time. The other thing that surprised me is how bloody the matches could be, back then. Same thing for the technical aspect (I knew the abilities of Steamboat but Scott McGhee, for exemple, really impressed me). The best match of the card, to me, is clearly the dog collar match between Roddy Piper and Greg Valentine. Brutal, with strong storytelling... Everything is well made. The match for the tag team title and the one between Bob Orton Jr & Dick Slater and Mark Youngblood & Wahoo McDaniel are really good too. Unfortunately, the main event is pretty frustrating.

14.03.2023 | KilometresDavis | 7.0 | A pretty fascinating watch and style of programming/storytelling that is more akin to modern PPVs and weekly TV than most programs from around this time I imagine. The backstage promos and several undercard matches all being in service to the main event feud gave it a big fight feel and felt pretty cohesive. The downside is that most of the card is pretty horrendous and there are only a few good matches all in the back half of the show.
07.03.2023 | Sinch | | Roddy Piper, Greg Valentine, Harley Race and Ric Flair stole the show, even by today's standards. As a show in total, kind of a did. I rated it 1.7 stars. But the two matches that had those four wrestlers, loved them.

01.03.2023 | Matthew23claw | 5.0 | In comparison to WrestleMania 1 I'd say they're about the same in quality I'd say the best matches on this show are alot better than the best matches on Mania 1 but the worst matches on this show are worse than the worst on Mania. I'd rate this 1 point higher than Mania 1 just for Piper vs Valentine and the main event but there was way too much filler and meaningless backstage interviews for me.
23.02.2023 | MattBarrySucks | 7.0 | The last three matches are all great. Valiant/Kabuki had a funny story going for it but the match was ass, like most of Valiant's stuff. Orton/Slater vs Youngblood/McDaniel is a nice little precursor for the feuds in the last two matches. The first three matches are skippable.
18.01.2023 | psychostar | 7.0 | This is the oldest wrestling show I've watched from beginning to end, and it was definitely a mixed bag. Piper/Valentine is an ultraviolent classic that still holds up today, Flair/Race is still great despite some obnoxious refereeing, and the last two tag matches are pretty enjoyable. However, the rest of the card is composed of total throwaway action, and there were a ridiculous amount of beatdowns by the heels after they lost their matches. Overall it was still a fun show but it was definitely inconsistent.
29.12.2022 | Jamarcus | 8.0 |
23.12.2022 | Smi-48 | 6.0 | The start is a bit stuttering, but it quickly becomes clear that this event definitely has its charms. The bottom line is that you can more or less dispense with the first three matches, nothing of dramatic relevance or sparkling quality really happens there, but at the latest with the tag victory of Slater and Orton you have a certain thread in your hands. Mr. Brown's title win isn't necessarily respectable, but has very good reactions on his side, which is clearly topped by the Dog Collar Match - Roddy Piper is over like toast and that's why the match is an eye-catcher. The tag match is hardly inferior to this and is even a bit better from a technical point of view, although it conveys less juice and drama. The mainer already gets a coating of top priority, but thus also in the prioritization a certain degree of predictability regarding the result. A solid and hefty, in places also quite bloody show with clearly above-average tendencies. Nowadays perhaps a bit glorified in the historical context, but always respectable.

The quality of the final 3 matches was very good, while the undercard stuff was a bit lacking in points. Whether or not the matches were good or not, it can't be denied that this was a historic show and was a pioneer of PPV wrestling shows. Starrcade was to Jim Crockett Promotions and WCW as Wrestlemania is to WWE. Every good tradition has to start somewhere, and this was the start of a great (and unfortunately defunct) tradition. 7/10 |

Overall, a great show which is worth watching. |

But without that reason, this was still a show worth watching on its own. There were a few lackluster matches somewhere in the start and middle, so beware. However, the last two tag bouts, the epic Dog Collar war, and the historic main event all drove this up to classic status. |

The first three tag matches aren't excruciating or anything, but outside of the goofy crowd-warming antics of Rufus Jones and Bugsy McGraw, you wouldn't miss anything by taking them off, and Charlie Brown and the Great Kabuki is more an angle than a real match besides. Abdullah and Carlos Colon is exactly what you'd expect, a short, messy, chaotic brawl with spikes and very little wrestling, but frankly I'm a sucker for Abby more often than not so it has a nice place. But man. Those last three matches go, the dog collar match especially being an all-time great slugfest that is, if anything, too brutal for it's own good, and when the entire show builds and builds towards the main event, angling it all in a laser focus on Ric Flair's coronation, the show doesn't let you down even slightly. It's absolutely worth it just for that. Just, y'know, maybe skip the first hour or so. |
25.08.2020 | cmpunk | 6.0 | Fantastic build to the main event. In fact I haven't seen a build like it. Interviews back and forth with Race and Flair, plus several crowd Vox pops. Seems like a tag heavy ppv which all were quite basic. Only matches to turn heads are the last 3.

14.05.2020 | btcaunce | 7.0 | The opener was a very sluggish affair. * The second tag match was not much of a match really. It was just kind of a Cliff? s Notes version of the tag formula. *1/4 Match 3 was more a very slow street fight than a wrestling match. I? ve never been a big fan of Abby? s style of match. * The fourth match was a hot match with good formula and some great wrestling from Slater & Orton. ***1/4 The title vs mask match was pretty boring. I? m not a big Valiant fan, but he got big reactions and always got the crowd behind him when he was fighting from underneath. That? s practically all this was. * The dog collar match's ending was a little abrupt and anti-climactic, but the rest was just brutal and bloody fun. The ear psychology lifted this match above your average mindless brawl. Piper would suffer permanent hearing loss from this match. **** The world tag titles match seemed longer than it was. Good, classic tag formula. Steamboat and Youngblood were the ultimate babyface team, and the treacherous Briscos played their parts to perfection. ***3/4 The main event was certainly not for people with today? s tastes, but a great back-and-forth, bloody brawl that was appropriately epic for this huge event. ****1/4 If you forget the lackluster undercard and focus on the last half, this is a fine show. Ric Flair became a household name as JCP went national years before Vince McMahon and people got to see what all the fuss was about. Race pretty much bowed out after this, heading to the WWF for a forgettable "King" gimmick before regaining a measure of respect as a manager in the early 1990s. They weren't the only major players, though, because Steamboat, Piper, & Valentine also had stellar performances that would, in theory, elevate them to stardom. Unfortunately for Crockett, it would be in the WWF. But that's another story. Thumbs up here.
11.12.2019 | thebigmilkman | 7.0 | This show was a lot of fun. It was no where near perfect and maybe by today's standards it's a little weak but I personally had a great time watching this show. Piper & Valentine stole the show
02.09.2019 | Jh22387 | 5.0 | Seems like this is held in higher esteem than it ought to be. It is probably because of the importance of the event, itself. While that is hard to argue against, when rating the quality of the actual matches, I find it hard to go with anything higher than a five for the whole event. Some of the matches were real stinkers. Charlie brown vs kabuki, Carlos Colon vs Abby, Johnny weaver and Scott McGee vs Kevin Sullivan and mark lewin, and rufus Jones and bugsy McGraw vs the masked assassins were all the drizzling shots. Charlie brown vs kabuki was the worst of the bunch.
10.05.2019 | rykejamal | 6.0 | This event was highlighted by the last three matches, with an average to decent undercard that remains pretty unmemorable. The dog collar match used the stipulation well, and the following tag title match was a fun watch. Starrcade 83 remains solely memorable due to the main event. A good match between a still young Ric Flair and the great Harley Race. The cage was used as it should have been, and the match itself was good for the most part. The aftermath of the finish was what really made this event as far as that goes.
18.04.2019 | deepkamate | 5.0 | Really hard to watch for the modern wrestling fan. Only two penultimate matches could show something interesting, brutality in Piper vs Valentine and quality in Youngblood and Steamboat tag match. The main event is known only thanks to Ric Flair, and he is so far from being gorgeous as it became with time after. Unfortunately, the final match couldnt boast of something outstanding, it was too long and boring

27.09.2018 | Makai Club | 5.0 | Bugsy McGraw & Rufus R. Jones vs. The Assassins (Assassin #1 & Assassin #2) (w/Paul Jones) - Bad ending, bad match. ½*. Johnny Weaver & Scott McGhee vs. Kevin Sullivan & Mark Lewin (w/Gary Hart) - Another predictably bad match. Blood was pouring over his body in seconds; doesn? t save the match though. ¾*. Abdullah The Butcher vs. Carlos Colon - Brutal match. Brawling, attacking each other with spikes Gnarly stuff. *½. Bob Orton Jr. & Dick Slater vs. Mark Youngblood & Wahoo McDaniel - This was a much better match than the others so far which isn? t saying a lot. Slater and Bob Orton Jr. did a good job in attacking the faces, mostly Mark Youngblood and creating loads of heat for themselves. I wouldn? t say it was a good match but a simple one done well. **½. The Great Kabuki (w/Gary Hart) (c) vs. Charlie Brown - Real forgettable match. Pointless. *. Greg Valentine vs. Roddy Piper - A real intensity and brutal brawl from the start. Valentine attacking the already injured ear very viciously, trying to affect Piper? s balance. Even causing him to bleed. Piper struggling to stand up, throwing wild punches, scratching and clawing to stay alive. Great commentary as well. ****¼. he Brisco Brothers (Jack Brisco & Jerry Brisco) (c) vs. Jay Youngblood & Ricky Steamboat - This was an awesome tag match. The briscoes proving to be superior, dominating Steamboat and Youngblood with quick tags and some lovely suplexes. Youngblood and Steamboat was great in the FIP role, Steamboat in particular. ***¾. Harley Race (c) vs. Ric Flair - Decent main event. The ending was very anti-climatic and it really dragged in the middle parts of the match. ***. Poor show for the most part but the last three matches helped boost the final rating.
11.08.2018 | StaylipFiggles | 7.0 | Some good matches in here, but some stinkers as well! The commentary is the worse thing about Starrcade 1983, they keep forgetting wrestlers names and offer absolutely nothing. Though the first match was a poor start the PPV, but the tag match that followed was entertaining and had a great after match attack. The Abdullah the Butcher match made it two good fights in a row and then came the Bob Orton/Dick Slater tag match - there is not much Bob Orton does that isn't great. This was easily the second best fight of the night for me. It was the shame that the match that followed this was boring, a technical submission borfest really, they could have livened that one up a bit. Good though, that the next match was the best of the night. Valentine and Piper gave a great show and put on a real slug fest. Great. The Steamboat tag match was good, but I thought the ref spoiled it a bit. The annoying ref thing carried on into the main event unfortunately, Harley Race v Ric Flair in a steel cage. They had done a good build up the match throughout the PPV with interviews. The match had a really slow start to the match, some good action when they finally started to get into it. Referee did his best to spoil it, which let this match down
17.07.2018 | Cameron621129 | 8.0 | Great historical significance. Piper vs Valentine was superb. Nothing too special from the rest of the card before that match in my opinion, but then again nothing outlandishly bad. The overall presentation and commentary was disappointing. Solie would get better and would be good by the end of the night, but felt unclear at the start. Youngblood in my opinion stole the show with his fast paced moves that were only comparable to his partner. The final three matches are really what makes this show good.
12.05.2018 | WrasslinReview1 | 8.0 | The real 'First Granddaddy of Them All', JCP's Starrcade 1983 was a pivotal event that, despite not making the same splash or having the same seismic effect as WWF's Wrestlemania, set up a grand tradition for what would eventually become WCW. This is also, I'm pleased to say, a really good, nigh-on great show which, despite a weak undercard, completely makes up for it with some ferocious and hard-hitting match-ups at the top of the card. Definitely watch Roddy Piper vs. Greg Valentine in the Dog Collar Match (***3/4), the Tag Titles affair of The Briscos vs. Ricky Steamboat & Ray Youngblood (***1/4), and a World Title cage match with Ric Flair facing champion Harley Race (****). It's a 7. 5/10 from me, rounded up to an 8/10 here on Cagematch.

10.06.2017 | DanTalksRasslin | 8.0 | The inaugural edition of "the Grandaddy of Them All, " Starrcade '83 was rather average in its first half, but picked up significantly later, where it turned in two all-time classic matches in Flair vs Race in the cage to provide Flair with his second World Title, and the Piper vs Valentine dog collar match, which came off as a realistic, brutal and bloody fight. In addition, that second half also featured a very good Tag Title match with Jack & Jerry Brisco defending against popular babyfaces Steamboat & Youngblood. The rest was average but inoffensive, but those final three matches are must-see for fans of the era.
09.06.2017 | Ice | 9.0 | This actually is a great watch, with an entertainment-centric undercard into a bloody workrate heavy second half, the first big wrestling show in the United States kicks off well. Bugsy McGraw & Rufus R. Jones vs. The Assassins was just some filler (*), Johnny Weaver & Scott McGhee vs. Kevin Sullivan & Mark Lewin (3/4*), Carlos Colon vs. Abdullah the Butcher was just to get some blood in there (*1/2), Mark Youngblood & Wahoo McDaniel vs. Bob Orton Jr. & Dick Slater was some fine tag action (***), Charlie Brown vs. Great Kabuki was a match I was more into because of the crowd and it had a fine payoff even though the wrestling was pedestrian (**), Roddy Piper vs. Greg Valentine completely turned the show around from being average to being awesome and is an all-time classic of hyperrealistic bloodbaths for 83 (****1/2), Jay Youngblood & Ricky Steamboat vs. The Brisco Brothers this is the fantastic Tag Team Action we know and love about NWA (****) and Ric Flair vs. Harley was the pinnacle kickoff of Ric Flair's career of being The Man and was well-paced 20+ minute cage match (****). Great show and obviously way better than the first Wrestlemania was.

04.01.2017 | SpruseJohnson | 10.0 | When you think of what a PPV should be this one has it all & then some. Flair vs. Race.... Piper vs Valentine in the dog collar match & the bloodbath in the second match. This is one show I could watch over & over.

01.05.2016 | jackleone | 8.0 | Except for some personal disappointments and horrible audio/video issues, I can't give less than 8 points to the event that started the era of pay per views and major events to collect. The main event and Piper vs Valentine are two great reasons to enjoy the event, way better than Wrestlemania I. I find weird how they did blade jobs right in front of the camera (shouldn't they be disqualified for the use of a foreign object? ) Also, the national anthem had one of the worst editions of all time. A true classic but I'd loved to enjoy it more.
12.04.2016 | jfpj91 | 5.0 | Very stale, even for it's era. Roddy Piper's match was decent. Steamboat is always fun to watch, but he was only 1/4 of the participants in his match. The final match was pretty good. The steel cage kept out any interference so we got to see a solid main event, which is all that keeps this from being rated lower.
