[7.0] "Four great matches, one horrible and a stupid finish to the show. The opener was the best thing on here with some incredible reactions from the crowd. Sting and Nikita were hot as hell, Tully and Arn were a phenomenal heel team and it was such a joy to watch all these four guys delivering a great show. Then Midnight vs The Fantastics was another great Tag Team Match - maybe it suffered a bit from following the previous bout, but it was still a very well structured contest with both team knowing exactly what they were doing. Then though the Tower of Doom thing happened and it was just awful to watch. You couldn't follow the action, the stipulation made barely any sense and there wasn't any excitement in this. But then thankfully we got back on the right track with Dusty vs Windham, where they got the most out of the least with both guys focusing on the story and personalities, while the main event was fantastic workwise, but the finish absolutely sucked. Another Flair match where they have some bullshit finish that didn't make any sense, like they couldn't just have Ric go over by cheating and even though the bout itself was very fun to watch with Lex looking very impressive it left a bad taste in my mouth."

[6.0] "If you're a fan of 80s American wrestling then there is a lot to enjoy here, but if not then this will hardly be the show to change your mind. A lot of the action is relatively slow paced, but there is a lot of story and personality to make up for it, in addition to an extremely hot crowd. The Midnight Express vs The Fantastics was easily my pick for MOTN (even if I prefer their previous matches), but I enjoyed most of the show. The Tower of Doom is the only low point wrestling-wise, but the novelty value at least prevents it from being a bore so it doesn't drag down the show all that much. My biggest issue was the terrible finish to the main event, which ended the night on a pretty sour note. That aside, I thought this was a fun show with enough good wrestling to be worth watching for anybody who is a fan of the era."

[6.0] "So many stupid finishes ruined a show with a lot of good in ring work. Nobody lost clean on this card and it does hurt the show. 4 of the matches were good in the ring with the Tower of Doom match being just plain bad. Tony and Ross are a great commentary pair."

[6.0] "The work here is mostly unimpressive but more than that, as a big show, I expect more clean finishes instead of stupid stuff left & right. Having said this, I'll be a hypocrite for a second because the main event's finish is pretty cool. It feels fresh from the modern perspective & adds more heat for a rematch. Anyone who watched this live would swear this was the greatest thing ever."

[9.0] "Surprise with the relatively low score, because I thought this was a fantastically fun show! Only the Tower of Doom mess was the weakling here, but the rest of the card was full of quality from top to bottom. You got a pair of old school tag team awesomeness to start, a hot Windham/Dusty bout highlighted by a shocking Garvin's heel turn, and a great Flair/Luger main event. If you can leave the number of screwjobs and non-finishes out the door, this is one hell of a watch."

[6.0] "It was a fine enough card, but one plagued by a lot of the standard problems of 80s NWA: overly complicated matches like the "Cornette in a shark cage" and especially the overcooked Tower of Doom match, and relentless cheap finishes. Three of the five matches ended on some kind of exaggerated gimmick, from the standard foreign object to a run in interference to a Dusty Finish referee stoppage. It's too much and takes away from what is largely a well-worked crowd with a lot of fan investment. In short, if you watch this show you're going to see a lot of good wrestling with a lot of jazzed up fans - just be prepared to groan at the finishes of the majority of the matches."

[10.0] "Very underrated show, 4 of the matches were great/fantastic, and while Tower of Doom was flawed it was also interesting and the ending stretch told a great story. My favorite match was the Midnight Express but the other tag match was also just flat out exceptional, and one of the hottest crowds I've ever seen was rocking and rolling for everything that went down."

[7.0] "Good show. I loved the Midnight Express match. The Tower of Doom was a hard match to get into. Too complicated and hard to watch the action. It was overbooked and complicated to a point that it became funny to listen to Ross and Schiavone to try and call it as a serious match. The Rhodes vs Windham match was good with an interesting finish. Flair really showed how great he is in the main event by doing such a good match with Luger. Much like most Flair matches, I felt this was a copy paste match of any of his matches at the time with him just performing the same spots he did every night. Still a good match nonetheless."

[8.0] "The American Bash '88 is a solid event with an interesting card and many enjoyable matches. I really liked Fantastics vs Midnight Express and the main event between Ric Flair and Lex Luger. The Tower of Doom is a confusing mess of wrestlers in multiple layers of a Steel Cage, the rules aren't clear and it's difficult to see everything."

I know there had to be some trepidation due to the unsure nature of the structure's integrity, but it just made the match less than it could have been. It was a straight up brawl with few wrestling moves. There could have been some brilliant manuevers, but it wasn't done."
