He'd have a lot more stock as a gatekeeper type, like he was with the Intercontinental championship, especially when a guy like Oba Femi comes along who is much more intense than Gunther as a character, looks much more imposing, and has a far higher ceiling than Gunther could reasonably achieve. As I said, phenomenal wrestler, top five in the world, but the overpushing is quickly approaching Roman Reigns levels."

I don't think there's a single aspect I dislike about Gunther and he is undeniable in the ring."

I think he plays the role of a classic wrestler so well with the "ring is sacred" philosophy."

He is a monstrous heel, a ring general, heavy chopper, and a timeless phenomenon to behold and witness. LONG LIVE THE RING GENERAL!"

Being a fantastic wrestler with a unique style, having an intimidating aura while looking like a total monster.. these are all aspects of legendary heels for sure but there's obviously something missing here. I've never been excited to watch a Gunther / Walter match or been invested in any of his fueds. We know he's going to show his in-ring supremacy and hit people super hard.. but that's it. You build up this "legend" only to feed him to one of the Usos (who cares which one it was) and have him retire people about to get their senior discounts? Maybe it's just how WWE has utilized him but I can't help but think this guy is just not really for me."

[9.0] "Gunther is currently facing a massive wave of hate, and honestly, it's quite unfair. I'm writing this as one of his biggest haters back in the day. I couldn't stand him along with Roman Reigns throughout 2022-2024. But lately, they both have been surprising me. Gunther has realized that he now bears incredible responsibility. He just finished a legendary match where he defeated John Cena. And throughout this disastrous tournament, he's been delivering some of the best matches. I didn't like what he showed when he was the IC Champion, but now he's on fire. His matches with John Cena, LA Knight, and Je'Von Evans are true masterpieces. He's been showing top-tier in-ring work recently. His style, rooted in classic wrestling, works perfectly with other superstars -- if we don't count Pat McAfee and Solo Sikoa as good wrestlers, of course. I believe this guy needs our support. He's carrying a heavy responsibility right now, and he's the perfect, bright heel of a new era in wrestling. I'm looking forward to his match with Brock Lesnar."

[10.0] "Imagine if they didn't have this guy tap out to Jey Uso. The best heel the fed has had in a long while and one of the best in the world. Absolutely godly workrate and if you don't realize why or how I don't think you should watch professional wrestling OR sports entertainment."

[10.0] "Gunther/Walter, whatever you want to call him, is simply the best in-ring wrestler in the world in my opinion and my favorite wrestler period. The way he is able to instantly have chemistry and get a 3-star minimum out of anyone is not talked about enough as I genuinly think he can have a good match with a piece of paper. The best knife-edge chop in the business is just one of his signatures, as one of the key things with Gunther is he doesn't have a finisher, and the match simply ends when his opponent has had enough as he is one of the hardest hitters in the game. He has finished opponents with the powerbomb, frog splash, big boot, lariat, sleeper, and Last Symphony, and I could go on as the guy is a powerhouse, striker and technician. Gunther generally has more finishers in his arsenal than the other wrestlers' total moveset. His character is a serious, no-shit German who simply thinks the mat is sacred and all this fancy sports entertainment is just bullshit. From Imperium up until now, he has made so many accomplishments. Being the longest-reigning NXT UK Champion and the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion and former World Heavyweight Champion are just some of the milestones he has achieved so far, and more is yet to come for sure."

[8.0] "8/10. From 2024 to 2025, Gunther's performances have been somewhat disappointing to me. I believe he is an excellent brawler--his strikes are visually impactful and memorable, often pulling me into his matches with their raw intensity. His chops, lariats, big boots, German suplexes, splashes... none are overly flashy, yet every move screams, "I'm here to destroy you, " making his style feel brutally authentic. Simple yet effective, he doesn't need elaborate maneuvers to make a match compelling. He excels at playing that dominant force, weaving gripping narratives through physicality alone. However, since losing the Intercontinental Championship, the quality of Gunther's in-ring work has noticeably dipped. Perhaps due to facing high-profile opponents, his strikes seem restrained--toned down in a way that dulls his edge. Even so, he's delivered countless standout matches. Before this dip, I'd have rated him a solid 9/10, maybe even a perfect 10. 8.5/10.From 2025.11 to 2025.12, Gunther delivered consistently high-quality matches at an exceptionally stable level. While his opponents' outstanding performances certainly contributed, his own work remains nothing short of astonishing. So far, in The Last Time Is Now Tournament, he has produced three consecutive matches rated 8.19, with WON awarding them three straight 4.25-star ratings--that's absolutely insane.Based purely on match quality alone, there's no question that Gunther is more than worthy of being John Cena's final opponent."

[10.0] "I can't speak much for his current WWE work, but WALTER left a path of destruction across the industry in some of the best, hardest hitting matches I've come across. Even in WWE, he had some of his best matches with Tyler Bate and Ilja Dragunov. You could put him in any era of wrestling, and he would succeed, that's the type of timeless asskicker he is."

In addition, I think Gunther is one of the few special attractions in the WWE today, having this uniquely unforgiving style in the WWE that we so rarely see, allowing him to feel like the realest guy in the room. The best part, as a lot of people think, is that he still has time to improve, and I might just agree with them, in all honestly. Long live GUNTHER."

Greater credit goes towards altering his body to better fit what the audience accepts for a top guy. Still, I found his post-match center-ring interview and vibe at the WWE Berlin show to be subpar. Electrify, he did not. /\/\/\/\ WoW, for a guy w/ 22 matches in the past two years, and for whom hasn't oft been tested against men bigger than himself, a 9.52 rating appears awfully high. Let him become a greater workhorse roster member prior to being ranked the #23 greatest pro-wrestling talent on the entire Cagematch database. (But of course this is a Teutonic tome.) With that being said, his array of exceptionally physical contests in-which he can play the bruising beast is impressive, as was watching him close-up in Ryogoku taking a beating from Hino & especially Okabayashi. But those guys have wrestled hundreds, if not thousands (Sekimoto, ) more matches than him against all types of competitors. I can't yet rate him higher than a..."

You could skip the promos entirely and still grasp the full narrative just by watching him wrestle. Whether he's main-eventing or elevating midcard titles, GUNTHER embodies what professional wrestling can be at its highest level. If his career continues along this path, he's not just on track to be a great--he's on track to be one of the greatest of all time."

His character's goal of protecting the sanctity of this sport lines up with the work he does in the ring, as I think his matches are the best WWE has seen in a long time, and he certainly restored the prestige of a title that was treated as worthless in recent years. He consistently wrestles with a violent intensity that makes his matches feel like real fights instead of scripted performances. It's not cartoonishly violent or bloody for the sake of being bloody, it's just believable, hard-hitting, fun action that can turn a bad match into a good match and a good match into a MOTY candidate. I also love that he doesn't have a true finisher, because everything in his arsenal is lethal enough to take someone out. Promos used to be his only weakness, but he's gained a lot of confidence and moxie since coming up to the main roster to match his elite in-ring work. All in all, I think he's the best wrestler in the world today, and maybe one of the best to ever do it. Hopefully he can rack up some world title reigns so his kayfabe achievements can match the quality of his work."
