Event was pretty entertaining overall and would recommend to fans of early nineties professional wrestling where they seemed to be testing the waters and where there were tons of interesting characters."

[6.0] "What's a shame about this otherwise very diverse PPV is that it's the Main-Event, of all matches, that not only falls short in terms of quality but is also celebrated with a pointless post-match parade. Especially in the undercard and mid-card categories, this event is actually quite entertaining - the opener is atmospheric, the tag team and Intercontinental title matches are technically sound, and Hart vs. Lawler delivers a hefty dose of story and drama. Putting the Kid back on a leash and continuing to build up Borga aren't exactly major mistakes, and the 6-man tag match is also quite nice. Giant Gonzales and the Undertaker, of course, deliver a performance that's a real eye-sore, but otherwise it's all quite colorful and enjoyable. If only - yes, if only - it weren't for that grotesque closing scenario. A show that has aged well, quite decent both then and now."

[4.0] "To be honest, this was an extremely bloated and underwhelming Summerslam. There isn't a single match of weight to it that has a satisfying finish. The world and IC title matches, Bret/Lawler, and even smaller bouts like IRS/Kid have really flat finishes. So flat finishes and a ton of average matches doesn't lead to a good event. Nothing on the card is worth going out of your way to watch, but there are a few stinkers here to weigh it down. I certainly wouldn't call this a bad show, but it is pretty skippable all the same."

[6.0] "holy shit did vince have a super boner for confusing finishes in 1993 PPVs huh? From all the garbage at WM9 to Luger's "running out of time" match (and others) at the KOTR, now the fucking COUNT OUT in the title match here? And everyone celebrating like luger did something special? I guarantee most of the crowd didn't realize that yokozuna was still the champ after that match. what a bunch of horse shit really. Also, the match itself before the stupid ending was boring as shit too. Luger needs to get some better facial expressions. When they were face to face at the start of the match, it just looked like they were talking about what they had for lunch or what their playdate plans were. The stuff I enjoyed: The Bret Hart double match and the entire angle was done well. Having Bret's brothers interfere and the refs not giving a fuck, until they made lawler actually fight a match? Yeah that was fun stuff. The tag title match was also well done. Those stieners were really bad ass in this era. I'm used to big poppa pump and the 02-03 version of scott steiner who really didn't do much. But this version of him is really good. Also the IRS/Xpac match isn't getting great ratings here but I enjoyed it. The really bad matches on this card were actually terrible and it's hard to say this but HBK/Mr Perfect had it's moments but it was also slow in spots to the point of boredom. I expected way more from this match. As a whole 2.5 hour show, it isn't terrible although I enjoyed the summerslam super show from the previous week a little better."

[3.0] "Considering both Summerslam's this is sandwiched between, it could probably be the worst one of the 1990s, although 1996 might rival it, this dragged and dragged and honestly it all felt like a waste of time. Honestly I am struggling to even write about it, The first tag match was really good and the best match on the card, the angle (can't really consider it a match) with Bret and Lawler was OK. Main event was pretty good considering both men until the actual finish, penny for the thoughts of people who bought this show in 1993 logically thinking Luger would beat Yokozuna."
Cdawg987 wrote on 23.11.2025:
[2.0] "If Lex Luger beat Yokozuna in their quite entertaining Main Event clash, then Summerslam 1993 might've gotten by as a passable show. However, the bullshit Countout finish capped off a poor show with a poor ending. Asides from a solid Steiners/Heavenly Bodies match, most of the matches on this card ranged from fine to utter trite. The worst offender here would be the embarrassing Undertaker/Giant Gonzalez match that included a confusing face turn for the giant. Stupid finishes also riddled the show, not just the main event, but the disappointing IC title match and Hart/Lawler as well. Overall, Summerslam 1993 may not be the worst WWF show of the year as that would be Wrestlemania IX, but the fact it's close says enough."

My favourite match on this show was the tag title match between hometown boys the Steiner Bother facing Jim Cornette's Heavenly Bodies. The main event of this show is infamous, and that was certainly interesting to go back and see. I thought Vince and Bobby were a really good commentary duo here; it's so weird that this is so close to Bobby being out the door as honestly he may be my commentator of 1993. The worst match of the night was the Rest in Peace match, but don't overlook how shitty Ludvig Borga vs Marty Jannetty was. This was a decent show that was interesting to go back and watch that I would also probably never go back and watch again."

High points are what have been mentioned previously, the Tag Team title match was good, and I thought the 6 man match was pretty good also. Bret Hart stuff was pretty decent, both matches were okay but the story that they told was way better, and the fans were into it. Shawn and Perfect didn't really click, The Undertaker and Gonzalez was...what it was, and the main event seemed to last forever. I don't believe that match time was 18 mins, it felt like an hour. Overall, the show as ok, consistent with what WWF was putting out at the time, which quality wise was probably worse than WCW."

[5.0] "Better than Mania 9 but still not good. Razor/Dibiase is a decently worked match but it felt like it could've been at a random Raw (5/10) The tag title match was my favorite of the night, fast paced, dynamic and with great moves form the Steiners (7/10) HBK/Perfect has an underwhelming finish and its not as good as it should but its still decent and the second best of the night (6/10) IRS/1-2-3 Kid had a really deflating heel win, but Waltman at least looked good (4/10) Both Bret matches are more of a segment than an actual match wihch is fine, but I found it a bit overlong all togehter I'll give the Doink part 4/10 and the Lawler part 5/10. The Borga squash was essentially Jannetty wrestling himself to try and make it look decent and god bless him for it (4/10) Taker/Gonzalez is a bit better than their other match thanks to Bearer's return and having a proper finish, but its still quite boring (3/10) The six man tag is nothing to write home about, a few decent sequences but it fills like filler (5/10) The Main Event was actually on its way to being a pretty good match surprisingly considering who was in the ring, but of course the dumb ending and closing celebration had to drag it down 5/10 but could've been a 7/10 if Luger won the belt properly"

[3.0] "A show that's a fair bit better than its preceding Wrestlemania, but it's still not a very good show. For one thing, the entire night was steeped in a cheesy patriotism that I've always hated in Wrestling. I realize it's a pretty integral part of the sport for many years, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Rolling down the card, there are also few highs. Razor-DiBiase was perfectly effective but not very exciting, while the tag title match with the Steiners was probably the match of the night. It was well-worked and intense, but also eminently predictable. That led into one of the great disappointments, a Mr. Perfect-HBK match that was only ever fine. IRS vs the Kid was fine but mediocre. Bret's long angle with Lawler, as it was an angle more than a match, was pretty fun and effective, but the whole thing with Doink dragged on a little too long, no matter how fun the idea of him being Lawler's court jester was, and it sucks that coming off his world title run this was all they had for Bret. Things pretty well fell off a cliff after that, as we were treated to the stiff and lumbering work of Ludvig Borga, and then the even worse Giant Gonzales in a match that only slightly improved on his WM affair with Undertaker. A forgettable six man tag later and we were in to the big patriotic main event, with national anthems and the Lex Express and Aaron Neville and really, just shoot me at this point, alright? I hate all of this. It's so shlocky and so insulting, especially when you remember that Rodney Anoa'i is an American Samoan guy! He worked hard, and I guess Lex kind of did too, but it only led to them getting blown up during the match, a pedestrian slog of power spots and "will Lex ever knock the monster off his feet? " He did, of course, and even knocked him out of the ring, stupidly winning by count out and never trying otherwise so that he didn't win the title. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Lex looks like an idiot and so do all the babyfaces hoisting him on his shoulders as he's showered with confetti for his moral, but hollow, victory. Add in a video package designed to make Lex the major babyface star when you STILL didn't put him over in any meaningful way and we're out of here, after a show that fundamentally failed at its obvious objective. Luger felt like a choke-artist from here on out and would be a mid-card tag guy on his way out of the company inside of 18 months."

[5.0] "This PPV is the definition of 'thumbs in the middle'. While there are some good matches that I'd recommend, there are other awful ones that you should definitely avoid. Highlights include the whole Bret/Lawler saga, The Steiners vs. The Heavenly Bodies, the surprisingly very good six-man tag match, and the main event. The biggest disappointment was Perfect vs. Michaels by far. The lack of an all-timer (like Bret vs. Bulldog or even Warrior vs. Savage from the year before) is a point another point against this PPV. The less said about Undertaker vs. Giant Gonzalez, the better!"

[4.0] "It's such a slug at times. It started well with a great match between Steiner Brothers and Heavenly Bodies and then a pretty good IC match, but after this almost everything was skippable. The whole segment with Bret and Lawler was great when it comes to the angle itself, but the matches with Doink and Jerry himself were mid at best with the second one bothering me in terms of following the rules. Borga vs Jannetty was also okay - Ludvig really impressed me here - and the main event wasn't bad, but it was completely ruined by the dreadful, stupid finish. So far 1993 in WWF didn't impress me."

[7.0] "This was a lot better than I remembered! For me the Bret vs Lawler match and the main event was the best parts of the show, but the tag title match the intercontinental title match and bret vs doink were pretty fun too. Borga's match was unsurprisingly horrible and the rest in peace match was bad but somehow better than one would expect from the Giant Gonzalez. Everything else was just kind of in the middle. But to me that's worth a 7/10, this was indeed an under rated show in 1993."

[7.0] "I don't think this PPV deserves the negative reception that it often gets. Everything with Bret and Lawler is very entertaining and well executed and the main event is extremely underrated. Every other match is at least 'fine's (yes, including Borga-Jannetty and Undertaker-Gonzalez). What really holds it back is that there are several bad finishes (including an all time notably awful one in the main event), and also several matches that, while solid enough in-ring, feel like they belong more on a TV wrestling show than a PPV. I imagine the bad finishes would have made for a frustrating live experience, but in 2022 where there are no unpleasant surprises and you can just enjoy the action for what it is, I think this is an overall enjoyable show."

[7.0] "This show really seems to be underrated. I didn't have high expectations from the show but I enjoyed it and it was easy going through the event. There were only two bad matches on the show, and the rest of the matches ranged from being okayish to good. The whole Bret Hart vs. Jerry Lawler stuff was my favorite part of the show. The two tag team matches were also great. Post-match aside, the main event was also a solid title match. The only problem with this show is probably the fact that it didn't have a GREAT match which would be talked about for years. Shawn Michaels vs. Mr. Perfect had the potential of being that match, but unfortunately it didn't live up to the hype. All things considered, this was a solid PPV and deserves more love."

This show had no payoff and was just a filler PPV. For being the WWF's 2nd most popular PPV, that's pretty disappointing. I've warmed up to this show in recent years but not a whole lot."

The whole Bret/Lawler angle was awesome. Lawler getting his comeuppance was a sight to see. Main event was actually decent, I thought. A well worked match with a lot of heat. Everything outside the dumpster fire RIP match were all watchable, so no bad matches at all for almost the whole show. Recommended."

[5.0] "Razor Ramon vs. Ted Dibiase. Dibiase made fun of Ramon for getting beat by the 1-2-3 Kid on Raw and offered Razor a job as his new Virgil, which Ramon angrily refused. That set up a face turn and the unlikely duo of Ramon and the Kid. On the plus side, Ramon was hugely over with the crowd. * The Steiner Bros. vs. The Heavenly Bodies. Awkward interview before the match where Todd Pettengill talks to the Steiners mom and sister. Their mom clearly doesn? t like Pettengill, which means she has great instincts. Their sister calls Rick Steiner ? Rob, ? which is right, but breaks kayfabe. Oops. Good, old-fashioned tag team wrestling. The Steiners? best WWF PPV match. ***1/2 Shawn Michaels vs. Mr. Perfect. Shawn was caught fire (metaphorically) during the Summer of ? 93, and Mr. Perfect was perennially awesome, so everyone thought this would be one of the greatest matches in history. Sadly, it didn? t work out. Wildly disappointing match, given the talent involved. Check out their match from 1991-ish when Shawn was a Rocker, though. **. Irwin R. Schyster vs. The 1-2-3 Kid. ? Detroit used to be known as ? The Motor City, ? but now it? s known as ? The Tax-Cheat City. '? Ah yes. Home of the less popular Tax-Cheat City Machine Guns. I have no idea why people are nostalgic for this gimmick. The fond memories are undeserved ? much like grunge music and Buck Rogers. This was part of IRS transitioning to a singles role with Dibiase as his manager. *. Bret Hart vs. Doink the Clown. Vince is the one person in the arena who is shocked that Lawler wasn? t hurt. **1/2. Bret Hart vs. Jerry Lawler. The Sharpshooter gets the submission but Bret is so enraged by Lawler? s antics that he won? t release the hold. Finally, Owen and Bruce talk some sense into him, and he releases the hold but not before referee Bill Alphonso reverses the decision and award the match to Lawler by DQ! **1/2. Ludwig Borga vs. Marty Janetty. Borga is every Bruce Willis movie villain rolled into one. Borga comes out to what I assume is the Finnish national anthem. And to think Janetty? s summer started so promisingly. 1/4*. The Undertaker vs. Giant Gonzales. This is no countout, no DQ. Whippleman stole the urn and killed Paul Bearer to set this up. If you can accept the whole undead premise behind the Undertaker? s power, then this kind of stuff has a perverse entertainment value. 1/2*. Tatanka & The Smoking Gunns vs. Bam Bam Bigelow & The Headshrinkers. One of the best matches for both the Gunns and the Headshrinkers (and Tatanka, now that I think about it). Not sure where this came from and why neither team was able to replicate this kind of sustained effort. ***3/4. Yokozuna vs. Lex Luger. Luger underwent a quickie transformation to All-American Hero in the run up to this show. With the Japanese taking over as an economic power, there was just enough xenophobia to fuel a feud. Somehow, this is a moral victory for Lex, who doesn? t seem to care that he? ll never get a title shot again. *"

First four matches are alright at least and the one for tag titles is very good. Michaels vs Perfect is disappointing but isn't bad. Hart vs Lawler isn't really a match but an angle. And this angle is great, it is one of the best feuds in WWE history in my opinion. Rest in peace match is even worse than at Mania and it says something. Unfortunately everything about the main event is terrible. Build-up is a total fail. The match itself is bad. Ending is very dumb and the celebration has no damn sense."

Tag title match was MOTN for me, actually thought it was quite fantastic. Perfect/HBK was enjoyable at times but a definite letdown based on what both are capable of, they have a far better '91 match. Kid/IRS is reasonably good, though the wrong man won. Doink/Bret is excellent and sets up the really good angle with Lawler, a short but super-hot match. Borga/Jannetty was a pretty good showcase for Borga, and Jannetty did alright too. Taker/Gonzalez is what it is, not a good match by any stretch but it had some entertainment value. Six man tag was solid. The main event is actually really fun and feels very hot, but the ending is all time stupid, one of the dumbest finishes I have ever seen this side of Russo."

Ramon/DiBiase was completely underdone. As was Michaels/Perfect. IRS/1-2-3 Kid either IRS was supposed to go over that anticlimactically (which I wouldn't put past them) or they just messed up that finish. The Bret/Lawler stuff was decent but confused as to the decision being reversed, and keeping him in a sharpshooter that long feels like a heel move. They spent that long building Gonzalez up and a top rope clothesline takes him out of the WWF forever haha, probably just as well, I really didn't need to see a chokeslam attempt. The main event is well documented as ridiculous, the match got the crowd going but the countout finish and ensuing red, white & blue balloon celebration parade is one of the dumbest moments in company history. Pretty poor show but as mentioned before, the Bret stuff was decent, the tag title match delivered and overall the show didn't have quite a farcical feel as WM9 did."

[6.0] "Don't get me wrong, Summerslam 1993 was a pretty good PPV and it started off that way. I liked watching the opening match and for what was Ted DiBiase's last PPV match ever before he retired, this was a good last PPV match for him to have against Razor Ramon! This PPV was good throughout the first half of it as well! The tag title match was also fun to watch! Both teams looked great and this was a good win for the Steiners to have in their home state, HBK and Perfect was easily the best wrestling match of the night, even 1-2-3 Kid and IRS was a good match, but after Bret Hart's amazing storytelling match with Jerry Lawler, the last half of the show was filled with a few mediocre matches and one match that completely sucked, that being Undertaker vs. Gonzalez obviously. As you would expect any Giant Gonzalez match to have gone down back in the day. Luger vs. Yokozuna for the WWF title was ok at best, but I didn't understand the finish to the match because with all that strong build-up the match had leading to Summerslam, they waste all that by having Lex Luger win by count out? Especially when this was supposed to be his only opportunity at Yoko for the title? From a storyline standpoint, I thought that wasn't a good finish to the story. Not only that, but it didn't make sense to me either because how can Luger be happy and celebrate his win in the ring when he didn't even win the WWF title like he said he was going to do? No wonder the Lex Express is considered a fail!"
