[6.0] "My rating for Survivor Series 1988 is a 6/10 a Pat Per View that was okay in ring and even though almost all the matches were an approved for me, I think It needed more to get a higher rating from me, I think the Tag Team Survivor Series Match was the best, but again like in all the matches, they can be some good and some not, but the time, they take a lot, specially the matches from this era, so that's why I think It is for a 6/10"

[7.0] "I would definitely call this an improvement on the first Survivor Series, and the best PPV show of 1988 for WWF. There isn't a bad match on this card, the opener over-delivers (**3/4) and the tag team eliminator is excellent (****). There's also a ton of significant debuts on this show: Owen Hart (as Blue Blazer), Shawn Michaels (with The Rockers), Tully & Arn and Mr. Perfect, which makes this an interesting event from a historical perspective. You also get some meaty storylines too, most significantly Fuji's turn on Demolition and the start of tensions between Hogan and Savage. Fun show!"

All matches are very similar to each other besides the main event which had a very good story telling. The second match is also interesting cause theres so much talent there even though the ending was kinda weird."

[5.0] "All four matches range from average to pretty good in quality, but Survivor Series 1988 as an overall PPV event under the Survivor Series label still had a lot of issues to work out in its second go. I think Survivor Series 1988 feels like a very small step improvement in consistency over its debut predecessor, but the card format is still absolutely terrible. We still have four matches with no title defenses, one of them entirely too long. We still have the overcrowded tag team elimination 10v10 survivor series match, which would thankfully be phased out pretty soon after this. This one was 40 minutes long: a match with no stakes, consisting of midcarders. We have not yet introduced the "Match of Ultimate Survival", pitting the previous survivors against eachother in a main event. While the arbitrary heel/face pairings of that upcoming format were so silly that they almost destroyed the gospel kayfabe of 80's wrestling culture, at least it created STAKES for the main event. Not having stakes for a main event is just silly. Speaking of main events, I think the main event was the best of the four matches here. This was not at all because of the in-ring talent, which was honestly pretty shaky outside of a couple guys, but because they actually told a fun and memorable story. The fun handcuff bit and the subtle jealously shown by Savage as Hogan and Elizabeth celebrated at the end were two of the only moments that really properly registered on a character level across the show, which otherwise mostly just felt like syndicated programming. I will say that they attempted to cleanly pull off a rare simultaneous heel/face alignment turn for the Powers of Pain and Demolition all at once during this show, focused around the treachery of Mr. Fuji. Unfortunately, like many PPV heel turns of this era, the crowd seemed baffled by the whole sequence. Even as the switched alignment teams acted in a way that should have made their new roles clear, the crowd continued to boo Demolition and cheer the Powers of Pain in the post match bits. For me, the bottom line is that the wrestling was really solid (solid, not great) all night, but it's a second Survivor Series in a row with no great or terrible matches... just filler that occasionally entertains for a few moments at a time."

I reviewed all of the matches if you care to read them individually. First match scored a 7.5. The tag match is one of my all time favorites and of course got a 10. The third match, while a step down from the first two was still fun and I gave it a 6.75. The main event has never been able to captivate me and I feel generous when I give it a 3.5. The average is 6.93 rounded up. The tag elimination is MUST SEE the rest kind of depends on your age bracket and/or overall appreciation for this time frame."

[6.0] "Weird one, this. Most of the matches are good in isolation, but the PPV as a whole is kinda draining because all the matches have the same rule stipulation. Some singles matches wouldve broken up the monotony nicely."

[6.0] "While I certainly don't feel this Survivor Series was as good as the original one, this show was still absolutely good enough to show that the concept worked. For better or for worse, this was another event that really was a larger stepping stone for Wrestlemania 5. When I rated Wrestlemania 4, I mentioned that show needs to really be watched with Wrestlemania 5 in mind, and this show is similar, but to a smaller degree. This was really the show where a lot of seeds for Wrestlemania 5 started to get planted and route in the ground a little bit. Storytelling aside, all of the action in this show was very good. I probably wouldn't call anything that happened in-ring wise amazing, but there was very little that would lead to a disappointment either. You also have to be a fan of longer matches for this show. Generally, I am not a fan of long matches, but I much prefer these long Survivor Series matches to more modern ones. I just don't think it makes logical sense if a bunch of guys can go 10-20 minutes in a singles match, but guys are taking falls within 2-3 minutes of being in the ring so the whole match can be 20 minutes. You might need to be in the mood for this show, but it's still one of the better Survivor Series events from this era."

[4.0] "A Huge step down from the inaugural event in my opinion. The opener was the shortest match of the night wich is a plus but wound up being the most forgettable one as well as it lacked interseting workers. Also having Owen Hart in the mix and him barely being in the ring has to be a crime (4/10) The Tag team showcase was good at times but was overcrowded with teams and went on for way too long to be fun (5/10) Third elimination match was, once again, way too long for what it had to offer. Some good wrestlers to make it at least watchable but some questionable choices too (who in the world is Scott Casey? ) An other boring match (4/10) The Main Event is the best of the bunch thanks to Savage intensity, some good storytelling, and guys like Bossman or Koko getting some good moments here and there. That said it still suffers from being too long as the match starts draggin a ton once Dibiase is eliminated (6/10)"

All of the matches were good with the best one being the Tag Team Elimination Match, where I loved all of the quick tagging. The main event had the great Mega Powers story sewn into it and I really enjoyed the whole spot with the handcuffs there. One of my favourite Survivor Series PPVs with talented workers all around."

[6.0] "Much like the previous year, this Survivor Series was decent but nothing all that special. I don't like the formula of the early Survivor Series where every damn match on the card was a Survivor Series match; it gets tiring to me. My MVP of this show was Andre the Giant; I enjoyed how his and Jake Roberts rivalry played off on this show. This was one of the shows the re-enforced that I don't like Ken Patera. There's not so much a standout match on this show for me but there is genuinely some good angles."
KingsCrossing wrote on 03.07.2023:
[6.0] "I thought every match here was solid with a lot of good storytelling throughout, and really I liked the concluding minutes of the main event, but four Survivor Series matches in a row (three of them being very long, too) is a lot. I love the stipulation but these early Survivor Series events can make for exhausting viewing at times without anything to break up the pace. Structural issues aside, I thought this was a solid show and I enjoyed all four of the matches on some level. If you aren't a big fan of 80s WWF then the length of these matches will likely make this a nightmare show for you, but fans of the era should have a good time."

Going back and watching WWF from the beginning I genuinely wonder if I'll find anything worse than this or WrestleMania 2. Surely there's no way, right?"
Giantfan1980 wrote on 28.03.2022:
[6.0] "The show was a little too bloated. The WWF was still working on getting their PPV's down to a manageable time. The 5 Vs 5 format would be ditched for a few years in favor of more organized 4 on 4 matches. The Coliseum Video version SUCKS! They chopped out about 45 minutes of wrestling to squeeze what's left into a 2 hour tape. Now with the network and the internet, getting your hands on an unedited version should be no problem."

[6.0] "A perfectly fine show, though there's not really a lot to write home about here, all told. Every match was of a fairly even quality, there was a lot of character and energy on display, and the crowd was into a lot of it. The tag team 20-man was definitely the high-light, with the best in ring performance and a lot of interwoven storylines that really felt like they were building to something big, as well as delightful early showings for Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart. Really, that's one of the stories of this show - you get Shawn Michaels as just a Rocker, Bret Hart really continuing his ascent, and the first PPV showings of Mr. Perfect and Owen Hart as the Blue Blazer. Coupled with Demolition turning face, the ongoing growth of Ultimate Warrior, Rick Rude, and the Twin Towers as an act, and the building seeds for WM5, there's a lot of momentum and forward growth in this show that's nice to see. It's a great mid-point from WM4 to 5, and you're certainly not going to regret watching any of it, just don't expect blow away matches or anything really memorable from a pure in-ring point of view."

[6.0] "Our opening match is Demolition, The Bolsheviks, The Conquistadors, The Brainbusters & The Rougeau Brothers vs. The Hart Foundation, The Young Stallions, the Rockers, The British Bulldogs & the Powers of Pain. The Rockers & Brainbusters were putting on an insane series of ****+ matches right around this time. Unfortunately, we don? t get the desired Dynamite Kid vs. Arn Anderson duel. This, btw, would be the last PPV appearance for the Dynamite Kid before the Bulldogs left for Japan and Dynamite? s back deteriorated to the point where he? s confined to a wheelchair. (The Rougeaus had legitimate backstage heat with the Bulldogs, so Vince arranged for them to lose early and get the hell out of the locker room before Dynamite and Davey Boy could get at them. ) Epic opener that makes you remember the ? good old days? when tag team wrestling was still alive. It slowed down quite a bit once the ? wrestling? teams were eliminated, but the other 30 minutes were gold. ***3/4. The Ultimate Warrior, Brutus Beefcake, Sam Houston, the Blue Blazer & Jim Brunzell vs. The Honky Tonk Man, Dangerous Danny Davis, Outlaw Ron Bass, Greg Valentine & Bad News Brown. Nothing much to say about this match. **. Jake Roberts, Jim Duggan, Ken Patera, Tito Santana & Scott Casey vs. Dino Bravo, Andre the Giant Rick Rude, ? Mr. Perfect? Curt Hennig & Harley Race. Another waste of time that I really don't have much to talk about. **. And now it's main event time. Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Hillbilly Jim, Hercules & Koko B. Ware vs. The Big Bossman, Akeem, King Haku, the Red Rooster & Ted Dibiase. Ted Dibiase? s stock was falling considerably. Over the past year, he went from title contender against Hogan to title contender against Savage to getting screwed on a Hercules purchase. nteresting note: 4 of the 5 guys on the heel team are former UWF/Mid-South Heavyweight Champions. The match ends with Macho and Hogan being announced as your sole survivors (which doesn? t make sense from a grammatical standpoint). Hogan hugs Elizabeth, creating some of the problems that would plague the MegaPowers until their breakup. Way too much protecting guys here to be entertaining. *3/4. The tag team opener is really the only match that's worthwhile because of the history, and because it's the only good match on the card. The main event planted the seeds for the Megapowers split, but with everyone in the match trying not to look bad, it just produced a series of horrible finishes."

The Mega Powers match was great as well, built well into the larger story but fun in it's own right also. The Warrior/Beefcake match was the weakest on the card but still pretty good thanks in particular to a great Greg Valentine performance."

Not much worse than last year but ending with double-turn is little too slow for me. Third traditional survivor series match is pretty long but it features great final part with Jake Roberts just getting beatdown. Main event isn't very good. Howewer ending is pretty fun to me. Yes, very overbooked but it is okay for Hogan's match of that time."

[6.0] "The first match works fine as an opener because The Ultimate Warrior surpasses the odds and wins when it seems over for him (the best way to get the fans excited for an event). The tag team Series is the best match, good work from most of the wrestlers. The third match is less interesting but with an acceptable final phase. The main event is the worst match of the card, with rare pinfall elimination and a too long emphasis on Hogan's comeback."

[7.0] "While not quite as strong top-to-bottom as its predecessor, the second installment of the Survivor Series was quite a good show in its own right. The main event was well-booked and accomplished what it needed to, putting over then-champion Randy Savage and top draw Hulk Hogan as a unit while sowing the seeds of discord between them, and it featured another sprawling and hugely-entertaining 42-minute rendition of the ten-team Survivor Series match that ended with a memorable double turn with Demolition and the Powers of Pain. The other two matches also featured some great talent and memorable characters of the era. A worthwhile watch."
