Controversially I think the big blockbuster main event was a success and John Cena and AJ Styles put on a classic. Where this SummerSlam falls short is literally everywhere else. Nothing is bad but a lot of it just feels like TV matches and I'm more positive on the mid card of this show than most. Hey at least this show only happens over one night"

[5.0] "Just having that match on this show was already such an amazing prospect. Very middle of the road show for me. Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins was great. Styles has been with WWE for 10 years and wrestled Cena a number of times so it's easy to forget this, but I cannot stress just how much Styles vs. Cena was considered a dream match for 15 years while both were at the top of separate companies. AJ Styles vs. John Cena was a dream match that actually lived up to the hype, Charlotte and Sasha had a nice match. The other mid-card matches weren't bad at all, aside from the IC Title match which was just put in an unwinnable situation. The main thing dragging down the show is just how unremarkable the main event was. Orton vs. Lesnar was viewed as a dream match at the time, but now it's 9 years later and we never talk about it. We still talk about Cena vs. Styles, which was on the same show. Orton vs. Lesnar didn't live up to its place on the card. The Universal title should've went on last. MVP goes to AJ Styles for having the match of the night with John Cena."

[7.0] "In the lead-up to SummerSlam 2024, I went back and watched some old SummerSlam pay-per-views, beginning with this one. It was the first time I had re-watched this pay-per-view since I first watched it as it happened back in 2016. And overall, for me, it was a nice trip down memory lane. I got a lot of nostalgia for this time period, I was growing up around this time and all that. But does it hold up as a show? Overall, I'd say yes. Like, obviously there's some negatives here; the fact it's four hours long, The Miz vs. Apollo Crews, Gallows & Anderson vs. The New Day, they aren't amazing matches, and in the case of Ambrose vs. Ziggler, kind of boring, lackluster and forgettable. But, on the other hand, I really enjoyed the opening between Jericho and Owens vs. Enzo and Cass, it was super nostalgic for me to go back and remember just how over Enzo and Cass were in 2016-2017, and of course this is the early blossoming of the fantastic Jericho-Owens pairing. Sasha and Charlotte was botchy on occasion, but they recovered well from it, and put on a good match. Styles vs. Cena is a phenomenal (get it? ) match, the near-falls were incredible, and as a child who was so infatuated with John Cena, this storyline meant so much to me, I hated AJ Styles then. The six-woman tag team match was a fun, inoffensive showcase; Bálor vs. Rollins was a great match, and props to Bálor for carrying on the match through the injury. It's a shame he had to vacate the championship, I would've loved to see where he could've gone with it, and how his star would've continued to rise, but unfortunately he has never recovered that main event position. And the main event, Lesnar vs. Orton. This match is somewhat divisive from what I've seen, some people think it's okay, some people think it's bad. I enjoyed the match overall, but the finish was a very deflating and unsatisfying end to the show. But for what the match is up until that point, I think it's pretty good. For me, the positives outweigh the negatives on this show, and the really good stuff is 100% worth checking out. I'm ranking it a 7/10."

[8.0] "The biggest problem I have with this show is its length. Some of the booking is weird, but this was a 4 hour event. When did Vince get it in his brain that somehow, longer meant better? Because it doesnt! At worst, it was a disappointing show. The WWE title match couldve been a lot better, but it just wasnt. Maybe they didnt click. And they hyped the hell out of that main event only to do that Really? But with 2 great title matches and one incredible Match of the Year candidate, you cant help but have a soft spot for this show. At least to me."

AJ vs Cena is by far one of my favorite matches of all time I like it even more than the one at the Rumble correct result as well. Finn vs Seth was great despite the crowd being distracted over a stupid belt. Brock vs Randy wasn't bad and then had an insanely shocking ending. Raw Women's title match was really well wrestled despite the incorrect result. Hell even the worst rated match Apollo vs Miz was just a mediocre ic title filler match."

The opening match was really enjoyable, Sasha and Charlotte was one of their best, Miz and Crews was pretty good, Styles-Cena was a classic among classics, the tag match was alright, I mean the women's tag match could've been worse, the Universal title match (assuming you can get past not liking what the belt looks like seriously are you 5? ) was great, and the main event was intriguing and surprising."

"Writing to comment on the Charlotte v. Sasha Banks match and request that it become a recommended match. This match is one of the best examples I've seen of working through an injury, from both competitors.... I don't know how no one gives it credit on this. The match starts blistery and very technically proficient, but you can clearly see that after Charlotte drops Sasha in the middle of a turnbuckle spot that Sasha legitimately hurts something and the entire match changes. What's great about this is that Charlotte immediately heels it up from this point. She targets the hell out of Sasha's back with strikes, with a gory special, with backbreakers. And Sasha sells this brilliantly as well.... she's constantly clutching her back after every move, and you can see a couple instances where she slams the mat with her hand because she's pissed at herself for getting injured so early in the match. It worked the crowd to perfection, as you can hear the swell of applause for Sasha to overcome the injury getting bigger and bigger as the match goes on. I don't know if Sasha's back is actually what she hurt, or if she hurt something else and redirected the attention to her back, but it's clear that she hurt something and that Charlotte targeted her back in a way that kept her safe enough to finish the match while still getting in a number of spots. The razor's edge reversal was a thing of beauty. Natural Selection reversal into the Bank Statement was also very creative. Many people didn't like the finish given Sasha's brief reign (which is an understandable complaint) and the pin coming so unexpectedly, but in the context of the match and Sasha's back being injured, it made a lot of sense for Sasha to overexert her back in the Bank Statement, and then be unable to kick out of a pin where Charlotte laid on her and required her back muscles to get out. Overall, an excellent and underrated match. Charlotte v. Sasha: 83/100. Other matches: unrated."

Opener was your usual enzo tag match **1/4. Women match was too sloppy and had a lot of botches, but still pretty damn good ***. IC title match was nothing *. AJ/cena was very disappointing and the most overrated match in 2016. Total cena indy movefest formula with over the top nearfalls. This sucked*. AJ winning clean was great. Tag title match was also trash *. World title match was boring with no heat at all *. 6 man women was just a match, too *. Nikki's comeback was nice moment. Balor/rollins was a decent raw match, could have been better, but still disappointing **3/4. Balor winning again was nice. ME was another disappointment. Way too short for the so called dream match. Lesnar again just suplexed over and over again and the finish was awful **1/2. Overall, nothing outstanding must watch here. 2 points for AJ and Balor winning."

The only 2 matches that are actually worth watching are Rollins/Balor (I had it at *** 1/2), and Cena/Styles, which ended up being an excellent match (**** 1/4). The rest though felt like a Raw episode, and the main event was a 2nd DUD in a row for Brock Lesnar, who somehow managed to have an even worse match that he did with Ambrose at Wrestlemania. And that ending.. my God, so fucking stupid. Cena and AJ saved this show from being a disaster, but it was still just a bad show. What a disappointment."

[3.0] "The one word to describe this show is disappointing, so may opportunities for great matches or moments but we got none of it, in my opinion there was no match of **** or higher standard with the MOTN being Cena vs Styles which even that was disappointing (***1/2). The opener was acceptable but quite sloppy. The women's match was pretty good though the pacing was a little off early on (***1/4). The IC title match would have been decent if there was actually any heat and interest in it. New day vs the Club wasn't good, I had no interest seeing Jon Stewart and the match was poor (*). Ziggler Vs Ambrose was decent and basic but nothing special (***). The women's tag match was not near PPV quality. Universal title match was again disappointing but acceptable at least (***1/4). I didn't mind the brawl between Roman and rusev if it leads to a gimmicked match and then there's more of a chance id actually enjoy watching them fight. The main event was the biggest disappointment, it was actually relatively back and forth for the most part compared to most Lesnar matches but it was far too short. I wouldn't have minded the ending if it was built up and the match had been 5-10 mins longer, instead we got the shell of what could have been a great match. Very disappointing show that I wouldn't recommend."

[4.0] "A slog to get through at six hours (counting the largely-unremarkable pre-show). Styles-Cena was a legitimately excellent match; Balor-Rollins was a solid affair if not out of the ordinary for those two (and resulting in a major injury to Balor), Cass/Enzo-Jericho/Owens was a fun tag opener, and Sasha-Charlotte was decent despite Sasha going in already injured and Charlotte making some rather major botches. The rest was easily skippable. For the four matches mentioned I would give it a 5, but can't help but drop it a point given the show's unnecessary length."

[8.0] "I'm a little dissapointed by so numerous dissatisfied comments and reviews all over the internet about SummerSlam 2016. Maybe in terms of pure wrestling on the very show it wasn't so good how it could be, but in terms of history, in terms of unpredictability we had great show. Just think: AJ Styles vs John Cena - the match for right to call themselves "the face that runs the show and the company", the match that countered most decorated wrestlers in the world in last ten years and whose ways hadn't ever been overlaped + very good match. Seth Rollins vs Finn Ballor for the first ever Universal Championchip. For many it was a dream match. The rookie from NXT vs one of the most legimit heel in the company for today. And they also gave us really good match which was seeing even easier than AJ vs Cena. Dean Ambrose vs Dolph Ziggler. The most anticipated event of this evening. Finally DZ got his chance to show everybody who he really is. We had several actually amazing promos from Ziggler in last few weeks and even started to think Dolph can win that belt. Of course, booking of the match was awful, but what the helluva storyline we had. And of course Brock Lesnar vs Orton. The very appeirance of "The Beast" makes any show more important. There is no more to say. That was a historical PPV in my opinion, in spite of lack of great matches."

[5.0] "Exhausting your audience with overkill prevents it from being able to reach an elevated, collectivized spirit so that the people will instead choose to focus on an (unoriginal) belt rather than the two participants working hard to give the audience a quality match. JeriKO is a better heel act than 'The Club' and I hope it's they who end 'The New Day's' impressive run. Charlotte needs to take lessons from C Cabana on how to execute dropping a prone body on a belt buckle. The IC belt has no credibility because the champion is incapable of leading someone into a quality contest. Ambrose/Ziggler was terribly ironic: the man who insulted the other for being a 'show-off' lazily showed-off most of the match and yet still won. Why did A climb the ropes when he had Z beat? The spot culminated in nothing, and outside A's impressive promo skills, he's not championship material. The denouncement of the main event made me uncomfortable: Lesnar in WWE is suppossed to be a facade yet the plan was evidently a hard-way bust-up. OK... but did he have to create a gash that would require ten staples and give the audience, who sat through at least a 4-5 hour show essentially a no-decision ending. Of course the entire purpose of this is to make Lesnar appear as such a detestable, sub-human monster that we'll all be so gracious and pleased when R Reigns beats him. Great 'Juice' sign upon Lesnar's entrance but I wish the audience turned heel on L earlier and started a 'Cheater' chant."

Also bisher einer Favorit PPVs in 2016."

When combined with my poor internet, which caused stoppages (and even an app crash on my Amazon Fire Stick), the show dragged on for me until almost 2 in the morning when I started it on time. Even without that, it was just an absurdly long show. By the time it ended, I was bored with it to be honest."

John Cena vs AJ Styles is a must watch, Dean Ambrose vs Dolph Ziggler and Seth Rollins vs Finn Balor do not disappoint. My real issue is with the main event, I can't believe Randy Orton vs Brock Lesnar could be so bad and with a weak ending. Summerslam should be for a decisive match, not a construction one. The rest of the show is watchable, not a single terrible match. Also I hate that there is no Rusev vs Roman Reigns and the New Day match was gimmicky with Stewart."

The fact remains there just wasn't enough great action to justify the inflated runtime and it was hurt by a lukewarm crowd. There were, however, a couple of excellent matches, one of which was one of the best WWE matches all year, and the main event, for better or worse, was really different and did its job in getting people talking. Though really it was kind of reckless. Pre-show: 12 Man Tag **3/4, Zayn/Neville vs. Dudleys **, Sheamus vs. Cesaro ***. Main Card: Jericho/Owens vs. Cass/Enzo **, Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte ***1/2, Miz vs. Apollo Crews *1/2, AJ Styles vs. John Cena ****1/2, New Day vs. The Club *, Ambrose vs. Ziggler **3/4, 6 Woman Tag *3/4, Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor ****, Rusev vs. Reigns DUD, Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton ***1/2"

At yet WWE went out of their way for that to happen. From the match order (i haven't seen one more terrible) through the overstacking of the card actually and finally to the lackluster finish of the main event, Summerslam disappointed. Sure there were some great moments. Cena vs. Styles (**** 1/2). An instant classic as expected with the right outcome. Balor vs. Rollins (****). Also a great performance by two proven stars with the right booking decision in the end. Banks vs. Charlotte (***). Certainly not their best encounter and now that I understand Sasha has dropped the belt to nurse some injuries, at least the finish of the match should've been a bit more spectacular. The Tag opener and the WWE title were good but I think more was expected out of Dolph and Ambrose. For me the other matches were not PPV quality. And the main event it should not have been a main event in the first place but with a better finish or a memorable moment in the closing moments of the show after the match it would've been saved."

Women's title match between Charlotte vs Sasha Banks was another good match between these two but there was a couple of botches so should have been better. Kind of shame Sasha had to lose after holding the title for little less than a month. Lenar vs Orton was sub par, definitely did not live up to expectations. Balor vs Rollins was good but expected better, the new universal title looks too much like the world heavyweight title. Cena/AJ was a Match of the Year candidate, the Universal Title match was very good, the World Title match was decent, and the Women's Title match satisfied and could have been even better if it wasn't for the botches and Sasha possibly being injured. The first two hours were awesome, with a couple of strong matches, particularly the Styles/Cena match which was a classic and is probably the best non-NXT match WWE has done this year. The last two hours weren't that good though, as the crowd was burned out from Styles/Cena and never fully recovered. Plus, they went very angle heavy, which is infuriating since this is the second biggest show of the year and this should be the place where things are blown off, not a set-up for Backlash and Clash of Champions. This show is getting a thumbs up because there's enough good wrestling to make it worthwhile, but WWE is struggling to maintain a consistent show in these new marathon formats and they really need to start cutting out some of the fat going forward or these shows will just continue to drag and burn people out."

Nothing surprising happened, the crowd was way too smarky/annoying and the main event was a slap to the face for every wrestling fan. Lesnar should really leave, he is overpaid, overpushed and has zero passion. I was hoping that this show would top WM32 but it didn't.
