Undertaker

[4.0] "I find it really difficult not to sour on The Undertaker. He's one of, if not, *the* greatest characters and entrances in all of WWE yet as he neared the end of his in-ring career it was disappointment after disappointment with some pretty bad online stuff sprinkled on top. And whilst his entrances have consistently wowed me and sent shivers down my spine, his in-ring work always left a little something to be desired. I really can't rate him higher than a 6."

"I had the pleasure of seeing him numerous times over the years, from Mean Mark days to Undertaker. Always worked hard and sent the fans home happy. His promo work eventually shined through after many years as did he in ring work with some the best mania matches of all time. His house show matches with Bret Hart were something to behold. On his longevity alone he has amassed an amazing body work with the best character wrestling has ever seen."

"I was genuinely scared of him as a kid. He had the perfect dark wrestling aura, and for a big man, he was about as good as it gets in the ring. I always loved when he would walk the ropes. There was something so weird and creepy about seeing a guy that large balance up there, and I love that it didn't lead into some flashy flip. It just ended with a crushing blow. God, that was rad. I also loved those long, drawn-out chokes he would do with those weird gray gloves. Somehow the gloves made the whole thing even creepier. Huge kudos to the costume department from that era, because that original look was absolutely perfect. Undertaker vs. Undertaker was one of the most fascinating things I had ever seen as a kid. And as much as Mark has talked about hating the Giant Gonzalez matches, I loved them. I even saw Undertaker vs. Giant Gonzalez at a house show and thought it was incredible. As adults and wrestling fans, I think we sometimes get so caught up in workrate, match quality, and what supposedly was or wasn't "good" that we forget the impact these performers and characters can have on a kid. Those matches felt enormous to me. The dynamic he built with Paul Bearer was incredible: campy, creepy, theatrical, and completely believable at the same time. I was never into the Limp Bizkit-era version of the character, but give me the Deadman all day long. To me, Mark set the standard. He's the best to ever do it."

He dedicated nearly 30 years to the sport; although his appearances became much less frequent in recent years, he remains one of the greatest figures in history. He was a leader among wrestlers backstage and one of the safest performers in the ring--a respected technical wrestler and a formidable fighter who possessed immense power and astonishing agility. He is truly a phenomenon"

[8.0] "Probably the most iconic gimmick in wrestling history, Undertaker is great... but I think the fact the gimmick is iconic makes people forget that a LOT of his tenure was full of not-so-great matches. It wasn't until the early 2000s he really felt like a great in-ring competitor, and the very best of his matches are some of the best of all time. Sadly, he really should've retired after the Streak was broken, because those last few years of Taker's tenure are ROUGH to say the least. Still a fantastic wrestler, just not quite the perfect wrestler some make him out to be."

[9.0] "One of the best wrestlers I've ever seen before because in the late 2000's he was diving from the top ropes and putting himself in dangerous spots for our entertainment and I loved him since childhood and his peak for in my opinion was probably like 2008 or later. But I think he should've retired after the streak ended because he got a concussion during his streak match in 2014 against Brock Lesnar and it impacted the quality of the match really badly and Undertaker should've stopped wrestling after that. Also, in 2018 and 2019 was just not a good year for Undertaker because he was having bad matches with Goldberg where there were many botches and nearly killed one of them and D Generation X because they were out of there prime and it was a total slow match and shouldn't have been wrestling. But at least he got a very good retirement match against A.J. styles in April 2020 and I respect that match because it was very good for him to ride off into the sunset. Also, I'm gonna say he's among one of the best wrestlers in WWE and a true GOAT."

[10.0] "Arguably the greatest wrestler of all time. He has it all and even peope who have never watched wrestling know the undertaker, his sit up, and the gong."

[10.0] "My favorite wrestler of all time, the gimiick and aura alone mean 10/10, the best of all time. Not the best in ring ability , even thougfh he gave us amaizing matches. Slow and lumbering towardss the end of his career, but still, WWE will never be the same without him."

He can have solid matches with whoever at his peak but if you watch back some of his american badass or early 90s matches, they're not the best thing in the world. However, when he can go, he could go."

[8.0] "The Undertaker was a real "it depends on the year" type of performer. He was great in the Hogan Era. He was tolerable in the New Gen Era. He was bad in the Attitude Era. He was great in the Ruthless Aggression Era through to the middle of the PG Era and then he totally lost his mojo once The Streak (TM) ended. At his peaks in 1991 and 2008 he was easily a top tier performer. In his trenches in 1995 and 2001 he was borderline unwatchable. I'd say if we're giving him a cumulative career rating the good outweighs the bad in his case."

[3.0] "He is without a doubt a legend of the industry but Undertaker's career included stretches of subpar wrestling, reliance on gimmicks over substance, multiple all-time bad matches and feuds that exposed his limitations especially against opponents who can't carry a match. He should have retired after the streak ended but he kept on going even though his age and battered body has been the reasons why he can't perform at his best. Also the supernatural elements and protected booking that sometimes prioritized his mystique at the expense of compelling, well-executed in-ring storytelling. These aspects represent the less-glorified side of an otherwise celebrated performer."

[10.0] "Now that we can rate his career as a complete whole, I gotta say for one of the greatest gimmicks in the history of wrestling, man this dude had a lot of ups and downs. Winning the world title in his first year puts him in a class that is otherworldly, but then there's the long portion of his tenure that holds up about as well as Toby Keith's performance on TNA PPV. And clearly he knew it wasn't money like the deadman cause they brought him back in 2004. He would go on to have genuinely some of the greatest WWE matches of the late Ruthless Aggression and PG eras. As a (dark) green main eventer in the 90s, he always carried himself unlike any other presence in the company. It wasn't until Kane's debut in 1997 that they actually had a passable opponent for Taker. The ministry stuff is divisive, and a lot of his matches were uncomplicated. But I would argue they never had to be because he is simply a captivating presence. I would also argue that the matches from 2017 to 2019 should be considered missteps and voluntarily forgotten, and let me remind you that in that time Taker got in crazy shape, good enough the have a sendoff befitting his character. Austin, Foley, Kane, Triple H, Big Show, Lesnar, Orton, Edge, Punk, Hardy, Cody, King Mabel and the list goes on and on...all have the Undertaker to thank in part for the careers they had. The man's a myth. The myth's a legend. Shit if I'm being real, I don't think there's any other rating."

[5.0] "Undie has had an interesting career. He took a cartoon gimmick of its day and carried it for 30 years. The only actual reinvention he did was the biker gimmick but with that came his best promos of his career. To his credit, Undie also got a lot better in the ring. He was never capable of carrying a lesser skilled person to a good match but with the right people he held his own. Unfortunately his ego was bruised after 2017 and instead of retiring like he all but said outright at the end of the WM 33 match, he kept coming back to have one shitty match after another. The last one with AJ is fun but that barely qualifies as a match. Then he called in a favor to get his wife into the Hall of Fame and get her on his podcast. What a legend indeed..."

[10.0] "Maybe the greatest achievement totally made in WWE. I don't thing he is the better in ring (especially the 90's and early 2000's, honestly sometimes he was very bad...), but undoubtedly the greatest character of all time, the aura, the entrance, the mystic around the character, storylines with Orton, Edge, Michaels, HHH, incredible, and he has a imposing physical presence. And so between 2006 and 2013, he elevate his in-ring level to give us classics in WrestleMania and steal the show from Batista WM23 to CM Punk WM29, he was over 40 years old and yet he was at his prime, and not just in WrestleMania, he made incredible performances sometimes in random smackdowns (vs Angle, wow), hell in a cell (his specialty) or something else. In my opinion, Shawn Michaels isn't the only Mr. WrestleMania, he shares this throne with the Phenom."

[10.0] "Undertaker is strange in the sense his first five years in the gimmick his matches were bad but then around 96 his ring work improved. For the next 17 years or so after when put in the ring with the right person and right match type he could have amazing matches. All time gimmick though. His early deadman from 90-95 can feel alittle corny today but around 97 the character gets darker and violent and satanic. While his ring work as the lord of darkness Taker wasn't great, the gimmick is one of the greatest final bosses in wrestling. The Biker gimmick was a mixed bag for me. 00-01 he was mostly awful (Outside of a handful of matches) 02 when he turned heel his ring work improved ten fold and had probably his best year up to that point. When he went back to the deadman gimmick from 06-13 he was the greatest attraction WWE had. Every time he had matches it felt like events that you couldn't miss. This is when his ring work completely peaked. He was someone who if he had great chemistry with could have amazing matches with (HBK, Angle, Foley, Bret, Brock, Batista etc) but when put in the ring with people he had zero chemistry with you would get really bad matches (Gonzalez, Bundy, Goldberg, , Brian Lee, Bossman etc) Vince for decades used him as his Guinea pig to put in with his latest giant and monster, so he had to have some extremely bad matches but he was treated incredibly. He is someone who had five star matches but also 1 star stinkers. When he was on form he was probably the best big man WWE ever had."

[10.0] "One of the best wrestling characters of all time. He perfectly embodied what it meant to be a WWE superstar. He had the look, the physique, the skill, and the IT factor that every superstar strives for."

[4.0] "Undertaker is decent to good as a performer in ring depending heavily on his opponent. Which is the most I can say I have found enjoyment out of him. Beyond that he is a walking example of a company mascot that would have not been looked at as fondly if he was not part of that world. Even outside the supernatural stuff, none of his gimmicks were interesting in their inception and hardly ever worked for me as they required me to buy him as a badass. His performances were pretty dull and one note, thus the magic trick rarely worked for me past a certain age. Looking back now most of his stuff that i did enjoy ages worse as time passes. He was by far the least interesting part of an era filled with much better and popular wrestlers than him, but he was one of the few who stuck around in an era which he overshadowed as he remained one of the last reminders of a better time. I cant tell why am I suppose to connect with him, he doesn't represent anything, a walking hollow being who needs a mystique to hide the plain hollow void of nothingness. So to wrap it up besides some of him matches, I never connected with him as a performer, found his gimmicks one note and ultimately hated the overtly soap opera element of his character which often times lacked any subtlety and was directly supernatural. And I feel he is one of he extreme cases where getting enjoyment out 99% of his work requires some level of connection to his character."

[7.0] "Undertaker is someone who gets carried by aura and gimmick alone. Propes ro mark for getting it over but most of his work is really bad and people only look at the 5 year stretch between WM25 and 29 to point at it when they forgot stuff like the hell in a cell vs bossman or any kane match"

[6.0] "One of the most overrated wrestlers of all time. Largely carried by the aura and the character. His best matches came against the real all time greats. Don't get me wrong, there were points where he was good and even great, which is why he is still a 6, but I find most of his work to just be average at best. Given the character he gets a pass for being a really bad promo, but he is still horrible in that aspect."

[10.0] "My favourite wrestler of all-time. The aura that Mark Calaway and his character was quite simply heartstopping and I'd argue transcended wrestling as a medium. An excellent big man worker and whilst not an all-time promo, certainly competent enough to hang with the best, Taker really was a constant from the Golden Era all the way until his retirement, and wrestling feels emptier without him competing anymore. My personal GOAT."

[10.0] "One of the greatest characters and greatest workers in the history of Wrestling. It didn't matter the era, the opponent, the match, or the title; Undertaker was always must-see and in demand. Outside of maybe John Cena i can't remember watching a final match of a wrestler and thinking to myself how much I really am going to miss them. Yeah, I never got prime Undertaker, but I got some great years of WrestleMania post-streak matches and always had fun whenever he was on my TV. Still think he should have never lost the streak, but outside of that, he had probably one of the only perfect careers outside of maybe Cena or Sting."

[10.0] "There will never be another wrestler that can replicate the magic that The Undertaker brought to a TV screen."

[6.0] "The second-biggest beneficiary of a guy being considered a GOAT because WWE kept saying he was behind HHH. Just because he was dedicated to his gimmick for a long time doesn't make that gimmick or the work in it good. Now it'd be contrarian to say Taker was never good, he had multiple periods where he was good or at least worked good matches. But scattered all over his career (especially pre-Taker) are stinker matches and absolutely stinker promos. He could carry himself well (it's why he got The Deadman over) but beyond saying some of his big lines his mic skills were weak, and you can see that especially during Bikertaker. He had some great matches, some even fantastic, with all-timer talent, but in less-important matches with opponents who weren't top-notch, you could see a lot of his flaws; granted, Taker is only behind Cena, Big Show & Kane in terms of guys WWE saddled with some real dogshit feuds so some of them would've sucked against nearly anybody. I think what separates Taker from a wrestler I'd call truly great is that if I picked a random TV or PPV Undertaker match, it's more than likely gonna be bad or worse, boring. A couple dozen amazing matches doesn't feel as impressive when it's spread out over 30 years with a chunk of that being a gimmick where you only show up once a year to defend your Streak."

[9.0] "You can talk about the quality of his matches during certain points of his entire career, the American Bad Ass era, post WrestleMania streak, the many times of attempted retirement, some of the more absurd storylines and booking decisions, etc, but I don't think any of this really damages the importance, the significance, and the endurance of Undertaker. The cornerstone of several WrestleManias, someone who had multiple match of the year contenders from the mid 2000s to early 2010s, a gimmick that cannot be duplicated, one of the most protected and best looking finishers in WWE, you can go on and on. No matter which way you look at it, the Undertaker is one of the best characters to come from WWE."

"The greatest character of all time. What began as a caricature evolved into a believable figure who made the average fan accept the supernatural elements of professional wrestling without dismissing them as cheesy. As the years passed, he continually adapted--changing his character, style, persona, and physical look to match the time, tone, and tenor of the ever-evolving wrestling landscape. From an in-ring perspective, he truly hit his stride later in his career, delivering some of the most memorable matches and moments on the biggest stages in wrestling. The Undertaker is a once-in-a-generation star, and it is difficult to imagine anyone ever duplicating his persona or the career he built."

[10.0] "The Undertaker had a long career and evolved with the times. From Biker Taker back to the Deadman, he always felt special. He didn't shy away from putting others over, he even lost clean to Vladimir Kozlov. For a man his size, he was incredibly athletic and agile, and could work with almost anyone. Despite multiple career threatening injuries, he still built one of the most impressive legacies in wrestling history. He had a great moveset too, Tombstone Piledriver, Chokeslam, Last Ride, Hell's Gate, Old School, Snake Eyes, big boot, diving clothesline, and that classic sit up that made every comeback feel massive."

[4.0] "The Undertaker was, for most of my childhood wrestling fandom, my favorite wrestler of all time and a personal hero of sorts. It was actually Chris Benoit for a very brief period at some point in there, but that's another story that ends in tragedy so I won't go into it. He instantly clicked with me as a weird kid who loved horror and was fascinated by death. He really made me understand wrestling kayfabe as a concept, being an undead zombie who competed in a ring for a belt despite the fact that he could summon lighting and shoot fire alongside his rival half-brother Kane who he sometimes also teamed up with. Either way, when I returned to watching WWE in 2015 after not watching since 2007 I immediately reconnected with Taker. I got to go back through his catalog of matches that I'd missed thanks to the WWE Network. His amazing Mania matches with Edge and Shawn Micheals and Triple H (and a deeply overrated one with CM Punk, the hypocrite), some great promos and overall maintaining a consistently unique and interesting character that could easily have been a complete dinosaur of the worst of the 90s and turning it into an enduring symbol of wrestling as a theatrical performance. Even the shock of learning that his famous Streak of WrestleMania wins had finally been broken in an (awful) match with (alleged) sexual predator Brock Lesnar couldn't dull my enjoyment of the amazing legacy of what Mark Calaway had accomplished in the wrestling industry. So, why am I giving him a four, then? Well, the funny thing about legacy is that, given enough time, the likelihood of it being tarnished grows exponentially. They could keep going on for so long that they're unable to perform at a level that even remotely resembles the peaks they used to reach. The flaws in their overall work in hindsight could become more noticeable with the benefits of both hindsight and the viewer who once primarily knew WWE (and a bit of TNA) expanded their horizons to see truly great wrestling that wasn't at the behest of an (alleged but probably true) sexual predator in Vince McMahon. Maybe they even openly express support for a certain political figure with machinations towards fascism that implicitly wants to silence and erase the person who once viewed a wrestling zombie as a hero when they were six because they now identify as non-binary and that's not heteronormative enough. It's fun watching your heroes basically tell you that you don't deserve to exist because of factors like race, gender, sexuality, disabilities, financial status, and more things that are (mostly) out of our hands. Perhaps I'm being too biased here, but Mark Calaway the person has irreparably damaged The Undertaker the wrestling character in my eyes. People can cry "objectivity" as much as they want when ironically giving a wrestler a perfect score out of emotional bias despite a career with so many matches that are objectively bad (vs Giant Gonzales? The Concrete Crypt match? The fucking Saudi Blood Money debacle where four old people embarrassed themselves? ), a lot of very subpar promos where nothing of value was said despite taking fifteen minutes to say it, and basically everything from the Roman Reigns Mania match onwards. That's not being objective, it's just trying to silence those who feel differently because of your own emotional biases. This is somehow even more pretentious than someone unpacking complicated thoughts about heroes and growing up on a wrestling fandom website where we arbitrarily assign numerical values to people who pretend fight in a ring and argue about it like nerds. I guess at the end of the day, we're all just Marks. Four out of ten, and it's only not lower because of my nostalgic enjoyment of the character and some all time great matches. That first Hell in a Cell totally holds up."

My favorite in-person wrestling story is that I was at a live event as a kid when Mark first starting wrestling for WWF. The intro was scary as heck, and all of a sudden I remember being right at the aisle and next to him. A couple of kids and I reached out to touch his arm -- and he was ICE COLD. This man lived his gimmick! He stopped briefly and quickly looked over at us, and we RAN like we were shot out of a cannon! I miss this about wrestling! He's a legend and a beautiful icon to our sport."

He's had some incredible feuds and storylines, especially his Mania stuff with HBK, Triple H, Edge, etc. But my god, the bulk of this guy's career was awful and cringeworthy. So many 'monster of the week' feuds that were basically irredeemable. Not to mention he couldn't cut a compelling promo as the Deadman or the Biker character. Even growing up as a kid, I just could not get into Taker at all. I completely understand the reasons that people like him, but he's personally never been someone I've found myself enjoying outside of rare instances."

[5.0] "The Undertaker has been named one of the greatest wrestlers of all time and the greatest character and most iconic figure in WWE history. He was voted the greatest WWE wrestler ever in a 2013 Digital Spy poll. In naming him the second greatest wrestler ever, IGN described Undertaker as, "one of the most respected wrestlers, and characters in the business; treated with actual reverence. Like a cherished, invaluable artifact"."

[10.0] "My #6 GOAT. The Phenom. Taker was never a technical wizard (not that he was bad at that by any means), although still an amazingly entertaining wrestler. But in terms of playing a character alone ... well, I'm pretty sure most people won't even deny that there has never been a character like the Undertaker. There was never a character as unique as the Undertaker before him, and honestly, I can say pretty assuredly at this point that there never will be again. He was a once in a lifetime talent, in that respect. When the Undertaker made an entrance, he just exuded an aura and presence that nobody else has ever been able to match. Despite being somewhat limited in the ring in his earlier career (I'd argue he was still pretty good), and he really found his style in the late 90s/2000s to became one of the best. His matches against HBK will go down as some of the best of all time (Dave Meltzar is an absolute moron for not giving those 5*) forever, and his career spanned countless decades as a top-level star."

[9.0] "One of the greatest to ever do it. Few characters in wrestling had the aura and the staying power that the Undertaker had. Few people, except maybe Hulk Hogan, could work at the level that the Undertaker did. This is because of the entrance, the lights, the psychology, and the character work involved. Much of this credit goes to how committed Mark Calaway was to his character. Taker was one of those characters that you knew could survive and continue to thrive regardless of how bad the booking from Vince got, I was a fan of his American Bad Ass rebrand but I just think the biggest problem with the character came from how he was booked The biggest gripe I have with Taker is that he stayed around too long, towards the end of his career, I don't think he was ready to let go and as a result of that, you got alot of clunkers and bad matches that really did a number on Taker's legacy. Those Saudi matches in particular are embarrassing and I think I think a good way to send the character off was at WWE WrestleMania XXVIII."
