His polished look and articulate mic skills made him stand out, and he played his role in groups like The Nexus and The New Nexus really well. While he wasn't known for classic matches, he transitioned smoothly into commentary and stayed connected to the product. A solid utility player in WWE's PG Era."

[9.0] "I'm not gonna lie and claim that he isn't a guilty pleasure, because I definitely like him more than he deserves. But also, he is WAY better than a 2.67 lol He had a lot more strength than guys twice his size, and his moveset was basic, but not more basic than like...Austin's lol. He could put on some fun matches sometimes, and I think is most notable for being the most compelling of Cena's 4 nonsense tag team championship runs. So his in-ring work I'd give a 6, maybe a 7. But I thought he was one of the best short-term commentators of the modern era. He was quiet, which was DESPERATELY needed, with Mauro Ranallo's shouting and JBL's tomfoolery, Smackdown was in dire need of a more grounded commentator. Him and Tom Phillips were also one of the best commentary teams in the history of Main Event as well, maybe Superstars too (though there is more competition there as well). Now that our commentary team is full of people yelling bloody murder like they're Kids YouTubers, I have never missed him more."

[6.0] "David Otunga is a man who's best known for four things: His celebrity marriage, his theme song being played on loop in WWE '13 and 2k14, being buried by John Cena, and being an easy target for childhood hatred. HOWEVER, truth be told? David Otunga was better than most people remember. Now, I am not saying Otunga was GOOD, necessarily, but...he was better in the ring than people give him credit for, he played a convincing heel who people wanted to root against, and he had the mic skills to carry himself better than a decent-sized chunk of the roster he was part of. Was he ever going to be a world champion? No. God no. Not in any company large enough for TV. But Otunga was still serviceable for the midcard, or especially a tag team division. ...Just don't put him on commentary, please."

But even then he wasn't the best at anything in that stable in my opinion, which is why he was just another body on the roster after the nexus split, I remember finding his mini feud with Santino Marella funny when I was younger and his entrance music was solid, but if I were to describe Otunga, it'd be "meh" at best."

His mic work was decent and he showed promise. but it seems like his lack of push and direction really affected him to the point where he cared less and less."

In the ring & on the mic he was alright, he was more of a good heel authority type figure that people could hate. His commentary is ight, not good but I would not say bad either."

I wish he'd been able to properly utilise the characterisation he did in those few months beyond them, since he had potential in that persona. Sadly, never really turned out that way for his gimmicks and he didn't do too much impressive on commentary. Still like the guy a lot though."

The only real upsides I could see about him were that he could wrestle a basic, but safe, matchup without trouble, and his body was very impressive for a guy of his age. He could cut decent promos sometimes, but his commentary is life sucking and he sounds depressed the whole time. He's likely only kept around because he's a professional lawyer and WWE can undercut him for his services, otherwise..... no idea. There's nothing worthwhile."

As a wrestler he wasn't anything good or special in the ring, though his character work was pretty decent and he was good enough on the mic to be a secondary talker for Nexus. Surely a big part of the problem is how much the WWE saw him over and over again. Maybe his development would've been better with more years in FCW."

Throughout that season Otunga still showed signs of promise especially on the mic. But when it was time to get in the ring, it was clear he was pretty terrible. Fast forward to today & his stint as an in ring competitor was little more than a blip & even when he was part of a tag team with other Nexus members he had to be replaced because he was so horrible. Now he does the preshows sometimes & he just sounds like he reads from a teleprompter. You'd think that someone who went to Harvard, married a celebrity & has an impressive physique would be a cash cow. Otunga proved that is not the case."

He's just bad and when he's not sitting there in silence he's saying something stupid or unrelated to the ongoing match. At least with Booker and Coachman they were entertaining. He has a great look and probably would've gone far as a wrestler if he wasn't way below average. No idea how this man has stayed employed."

He was marvelous in the ring and gold on the mic. First thing's first: he was so good in the ring. He had power for days, and knew how to pick a spot. He's an excellent brawler and incredibly charismatic in the ring. Then: His work as commentary was SO good. He was one of the brightest commentators we've ever had. He's just so refreshing from the typical "LISTEN TO ME SCREAM I'M LOUD LIKE ME LISTEN TO ME I'M LOUD" that WWE commentary has devolved into. His sharp and concise voice is so appreciated. Honestly, I will never understand how he's ranked so low on here. I love him!"

[2.0] "David Otunga proves that not a good physique does a wrestler make. Otunga was a clumsy wrestler who pretty much never improved through his three years of in-ring action. What the WWE liked about Otunga is the look and the name value. Married to Jennifer Hudson and coupled with a Harvard law degree, Otunga seems like a golden character. However, poor mic skills and questionable charisma turned him off from viewers. While I could say that his attempt at wrestling was inoffensive, it has led to a very offensive and much maligned commentary career. Otunga will somehow always find employments in the WWE (props to that finesse game), but his on-screen skills are just not there."
DanTalksRasslin wrote on 01.10.2016:
[2.0] "Otunga had the kind of look WWE craves in its superstars and by appearance might have been a can't miss prospect. Unfortunately, he had little else going for him in the ring. While he was able to claim two runs with the WWE Tag Titles (including a one-day run with John Cena as part of the Nexus storyline), and his look, real-life legal acumen as well as his connection to celeb fiancee Jennifer Hudson kept him employed by WWE, his lack of improvement led to him being eventually phased out of his in-ring role to work as an analyst and now color commentator, where, unfortunately, he still leaves much to be desired."

I consider him an athletic talent, but one that was out of his element in the ring. The nice guy approach maybe just never worked for me, but early in the career of Otunga, I tuned out and never went back. There just was never enough there to invest in for me. He gets a solid "meh"."

[2.0] "Despite having a good look and initially seeming like a natural on the mic, Otunga just never evolved into the type of wrestler that anyone would look forward to seeing. His beverage gimmick is more over than him--and his beverage gimmick isn't over. I think that with a bit more fire and better heeling, Otunga might've had a shot at securing himself a solid Miz-like midcard spot, but he just didn't have the ring savvy or coordination to ever seem even halfway decent in the ring, and he always came across as a supporting actor rather than a star himself in every promo and backstage segment he was in. Maybe it'll turn out that he's found his calling as a commentator, but judging from his two SD! appearances so far, he's incredibly bad in that role as well."
