Is Ricky Starks a particularly bad wrestler? I don't think so. I think there's a diamond in the rough, something that can be polished, if given enough time. His AEW run is testament to that: he had potential, he was given opportunities, and he has a decent, but not incredible, track record with them. But the problem for Ricky Starks is, he found himself somewhat out of favour with Tony Khan whilst Tony Khan was finding himself somewhat out of favour with the rest of the internet, and so the mythology of the "fumble" started to form. But if you paid attention, the problems for Ricky were already in AEW. He could competently wrestle, but he could never lead a match, which is what separates the good from the great, so it just looks like he was just there. He looked like the Rock, sure, but the problem was that he looked too much like the Rock, so much that everyone and their mother were calling him a Temu version of the guy. And it was, indeed, during one of those promos which exposed him something rotten. He got flustered in two successive big promos where the veteran against him -- Copeland and Omega -- was clearly also having a bad day, and I think that's where the shine came off. But his year sitting out the contract allowed narratives to form which I think he started to believe his own hype. So did, as the chant go, Tony Khan fumble him? I don't think so. I think where he is now in NXT is currently the best place for him, and I think deep down, Tony Khan knows it, Shawn Michaels and Triple H know it, and more to the point, even he knows it. |

He has a natural charisma to him that can't be taught. I figured he would've improved the rest of his game since then, but he's the exact same character and wrestler that he was in 2019. It's safe to say that Ricky is what he is. There's a weird misconception out there, fueled by him, that he was misused in AEW, but honestly, he was used exactly how a man of his talents should be. He's currently being treated well in NXT because Triple H wants to show AEW stars that they'll be treated well in WWE, but I think fans of Ricky are in for a rude awakening if they think he's going to be anything special on main roster WWE. He is a good hand who will be capable of drawing enough heat to help put over babyfaces who are on their way up the card. I think his ceiling is a Miz type role, where he's a versatile heel that can be plugged in anywhere when you need them, but certainly not good enough to be a top star. My suggestion to him is to develop his character even just a tiny bit. Man with a chip on his shoulder and a constant scowl can only take you so far. Also, change up your arsenal of moves a little bit. Why would a man who looks like Ricky ever use a spear as one of his signature moves when guys like Roman Reigns and Bobby Lashley are also using it? Just strange to me. He's a good hand who is competent in all aspects of wrestling, but nothing special in any aspect. I am confident he never would have made it to WWE if it weren't for AEW. |

I think he has upside potential if he adjusted his look/character a bit more instead of being Dwayne Johnson Jr. I know he's more than that, but people are visual creatures and The Rock comparisons will never go away unless he adjusts his look, unless being in The Rock's shadow is what he's going for. Doesn't seem to be a team player. This will be one of those guys who when they finally do go to WWE, all the WWE marks will pretend like they loved him forever. |
