[9.0] "Great match up from Claudio and Nigel Mcguinness. There was a lot of uppercuts. It was hard hitting and had some good counter wrestling. Two very talented tall guys it was an excellent match."

A lot of Nigel's title matches have a fairly methodical first half, but this started all guns blazing from the outset as Claudio was looking to put Nigel away early. It's an opening that has been done quite a lot in more recent years, but at the time it was very unique, and it created a sense of tension that made it feel a bit like anything could happen for the remainder of the bout. Claudio came very close to taking the title with a flurry towards the end, but a dazed Nigel eventually used his momentum against him and caught him rushing in with the Jawbreaker Lariat. While I have given both Nigel-Claudio matches the same rating, I felt a lot more confident about it this time (and even considered going higher here), and would definitely consider this the better of the two matches."

[9.0] "Most ROH title matches start out with a lengthy feeling out process, but this one starts with Claudio coming out hot right out the gate. Castagnoli immediately goes for a surprise pin, Nigel kicks out and hits a devastating lariat, and Castagnoli then quickly hits his finisher for a believable near-fall that the fans pop for. It's one of my favorite opening sequences in any ROH title match, not only because it's pretty much never done, but also because it makes perfect sense. Hypothetically speaking, if you're a wrestler, why wouldn't you use your deadliest move at the start of the match to try to get a quick win? The match doesn't end there and goes for an additional 19 minutes, but a part of me wishes that had been the actual finish just for how shocking it would have been. It would've shown fans that anything can happen in an ROH title match, and that every near-fall can end a match. The match didn't end that way however, but it's okay because we got a pretty great title match regardless."

I liked the video package they aired for Claudio showing his frustrations and such, and I love how he started the match the same way, beating up Nigel, showing his desperations. The middle of the match was your usual heel Nigel working on top performance and it was great. I did not like the nearfalls at the end though, dropped my rating. (***3/4)"
