[4.0] "This isn't an awful main event, but a rather underwhelming one. The match plods along and really drags, especially the crowd-brawling and big spots in the second half, with the needless McMahon drama between Shane and Vince really bogging down the finishing stretch. Each elimination feels quite anticlimactic and deflating, with the Big Show being eliminated rather easily, and he doesn't even try to get his heat back. You'd think they'd try to stack the deck against the babyfaces of the match, but no, Triple H is the one trying to overcome the odds. That's a strange choice, but you could at least frame it as the heel getting his comeuppance. Then Mick just double-crosses The Rock, which is so baffling to me. They tried to explain it away as him wanting Triple H all to himself, but I still find this to be asinine. We just did a Rock & Sock reunion; now we're gonna pretend it didn't happen? Plus, why would you put the "retiring" Foley in a position where he'd be booed? And why are you now trying to stack the deck against the babyface? You could have done that with the Big Show, and it would have made sense. So Mick and Triple Nose slowly beat over The Rock as my investment and suspension of disbelief slip, Mick whiffs an elbow to Rocky on the announce table, then Trips repeatedly tries to break the damn thing. I mean, it's pretty funny, can't lie, but it further drags the pacing down while also resulting in a dreadful table break. Then Trips just casually ends his alliance with Mick that never should have been, and Mick's just gone. At least he evens the score with a Barbie-shot to his arch-rival, but that makes their temporary alliance all the more baffling. Rocky and Trippy then walk and brawl for ages, which isn't particularly gripping to me and grossly pads out the already overindulgent runtime. Rock is somehow able to keep going for another 10 minutes after a belt shot to the head and a piledriver onto steel steps. And why does no one try to bash someone's head in with the chairs or the barbed-wired 2x4? Don't you wanna win, dammit? The focus then pivots to a truly gnaff-looking scuffle between Vince and Shane that I desperately wanted to end as Rock and Trips took a 5-minute nap. Then, surprise! Vince was aligned with Trips and Stephanie the whole time! Another swerve for the sake of it that completely undermines one of the match's main gimmicks, and it doesn't make a lick of sense either, given the last 6 months of television similar to Mick's mind-boggling team-up with the Tripster. After a chairshot to the head and what should have been a hospitalization, Rocky still won't go down, which popped the crowd, but is still bollocks. Then Trips just beats Rock flat, and boy, does it deflate the crowd. And it's kinda difficult for the heels to get heat considering it's No DQ, so frustrating as the McMahon intervention may be, it's totally legal. The booking and structuring of this match was ass-backwards in so many ways, with a storyline that only dilutes what should have been a simple 1-on-1 main event. The action within is nothing offensive, but also nothing remarkable. The inclusion of too many combatants, too many story threads, and too many McMahons also throws a wrench in the match's focus and pacing, and completely derails any form of coherent storytelling or psychology, making the bout a slog to get through. Couple that with some head-scratching twists and a flat finish, and we've got ourselves a rather subpar main event for the biggest show of the year in the company's hottest ever year. Maybe including Pat McAfee would have saved it..."

I don't really like how long the match went on for, but the Rock vs.Triple H part of the match was awesome. Not a great Wrestlemania Main Event, but it's a relatively good match. The ending with Vince hitting Rock with the chair was not good. Ending this entire match with two chair shots is certainly a choice."

Her pleading for Mick to stay in the match, for all her wooden acting in general, she actually appears invested in Mick's chances of capturing the title. The match is immediately better once Big Show is gone. Mick's announce table bump, it looks like he undershot, will never not look really painful. Also I cannot stand that the 2x4 in barbed wire makes an appearance yet the only one to gig is Vinny Mac from an announce table tv monitor. Doesn't make sense. Rock and HHH as the final two, and the match picks up but this is still a way overbooked mess."

[6.0] "This might be the most chaotic WrestleMania main event ever. After all, it's tagged as "A McMahon in every corner", so no surprise there. It starts pretty well with The Big Show looking strong, the other three teaming up to get rid of him early, which is fine. The Rock 'n' Sock Connection reuniting for a brief moment is cool although Foley attacking The Rock instead of letting him eliminate HHH makes no sense. Him teaming up with HHH is even worse, and that botched elbow drop spot on the announce table hurts. He gets one last big time kickout, but as a whole, it's a bit of an underwhelming way to go out (before returning 4 years later). The Rock and Triple H then get a full 18-minute brawl with both taking a couple of hard bumps, including a hard ass Piledriver on the steel steps. Of course you get the late McMahon drama. Shane and Vince brawling is hilarious, Vince turning on The Rock makes sense, but Triple H winning is kind of a bummer. The Rock gets payback on Vince and Stephanie to close out the show on a positive, although bittersweet note. It's not bad at all, but it's still a funky 38-minute mess. ***1/4"

Also, why in god's name were Foley and Big Show there? I love Foley but he didn't even seem like he cared about being there. That leaves the main focus of the match to be around Triple H, and even in his best year that just doesn't capture my interest very well. A rare case where the heel triumphs at Mania, and it shouldn't have happened..."

[7.0] "Vince McMahon suffered from Vince Russo syndrome, which means he felt he needed to be the focus of every main storyline in the company during this time. Austin is out after having neck surgery and Undertaker is out with a foot injury, I believe. Several promotional posters showed Jericho as part of the match instead of Foley, but McMahon lost confidence in Jericho (or Triple H didn't want to work with him) and so Foley was brought back only a month after retirement for one more match. So, each member of the feuding McMahon family had a representative in the ring for them. Vince - The Rock, Shane - Big Show, Stephanie - Triple H, and Linda - Foley. This match was a massive letdown considering who was involved in the match. But that doesn't mean it was bad. It was quite good, actually, just not spectacular. Of course, this crowd was awful. Barely made a sound all show."

[6.0] "I absolutely hated the build-up for this match. It went from being HHH vs. The Rock to HHH vs. Big Show to HHH vs. Big Show vs. The Rock to HHH vs. Big Show vs. The Rock vs. Mick Foley. At one point, Chris Jericho was even supposed to be in place of Foley. WWF took "card subject to change" way too seriously heading into this show. The story focused primarily on tensions among the four McMahons rather than the actual championship competitors, who felt like mere representatives in their own title match. The match itself is extremely weird and overbooked to death. WWF had been building Big Show as a monster for months, only to have him eliminated in just five minutes, which turned the contest into a triple threat. There was a brief reunion between The Rock and Foley as they teamed up against Triple H, before Foley inexplicably turned on The Rock to align with The Game instead. Okay...? There was a confusing spot where Triple H broke up The Rock's pinfall attempt on Foley, which commentators explained as Triple H wanting to pin Foley himself, logic that didn't make much sense, but Triple H did eventually pin Foley anyway, leaving him and The Rock as the final two competitors. Shane McMahon would return to attack his father Vince, leading to a brawl between the two McMahons. There's actually a point where Shane and Vince are just fighting at ringside while Triple H and Rock lie motionless in the ring, which was painfully awkward. In the end, Vince turned on The Rock and struck him with a steel chair twice, allowing Triple H to retain his WWF Championship. SWERVE OF THE CENTURY! Okay, Vince's heel turn was somewhat unexpected, but that doesn't mean it was actually good booking. Post-match, The Rock returned to hit Rock Bottoms on both Vince and Shane, before being slapped by Stephanie McMahon, who then received a Rock Bottom and People's Elbow for her troubles, as The Rock stood tall to close the show. If I had a nickel for every time Stephanie slapped Rock at WrestleMania and was then attacked, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened twice. If you ignore all the McMahon family nonsense, the match does have some solid action with cool spots, but it dragged on far too long with a payoff that fans absolutely did not want to see. I genuinely lost braincells watching this overbooked mess. [***]"

Instead, we get Trips and Rocky along with Big Show, who is eliminated in 5 minutes, and Mick Foley, who pointlessly came out of retirement for this. Add that an unsatisfactory finish, and you get a wank Mania main event."

You just know HHH vs Foley (as in the previous 2 ppvs) or HHH vs Rock (as in the next one) would have been a better main event. The McMahon in every corner gimmick really takes over the match, and that's why my rating is as low as it is. I didn't give a crap about any of the McMahons in the 00s and I definitely don't care about the pseudo family drama on rewatch."

What they did at Backlash should've happened here. Triple H pins the Rock clean in the middle of the ring. Why does he get a rematch? It should've been a triple threat with Big Show eating the pin so they could move on."

[6.0] "This is one of those matches I have mixed feelings on because it should have been so much better than it was! I just didn't like the 'McMahon in every corner' stipulation at all because whilst there was important storytelling with Vince McMahon turning heel betraying The Rock and siding with Triple H, having then all there surrounding the ring like this just puts all the focus on the McMahon's and not the actual main eventers. The quality of the match itself was good despite some of the disappointing booking with the Big Show making no impact and getting eliminated very early. Foley's appearance was underwhelming too because it just did not make sense how he was working with Triple H to take out The Rock in the triple threat portion of the match. He got a big car crash spot and then he was quickly taken out by Triple H afterwards. His Hell in a Cell retirement match would have been a much better way for him to go out than this. The final stretch between Triple H and the Rock lasts a good 20 minutes and is really the only good one on one encounter at this entire show. It set the blueprint for the classic matches to come, but it really should have been a one on one match to begin with. Triple H ended up being the first heel to leave a WrestleMania as champion."

There was a hot point where it was Hunter, Foley, & Rock in there and the crowd was getting into it nicely, but after Foley was eliminated, it felt like a whole other 20-minute match that only needed to be five. None of the Vince and Shane stuff needed to happen, as it added unnecessary bloat to the match. Vince posting Hunter also didn't need to happen as it directly contradicted the finish, which was Vince helping Hunter win. Most importantly, this just never felt like a Mania main event. This felt like the main event of a post-Summerslam fall PPV that needed a jazzy tagline to spice up an otherwise lame card. I mean, that's exactly what this show was, a lame card with a jazzy tagline. So maybe it was fitting. **"

[5.0] "So, we all know that the real main event of Wrestlemania 16 happened one month after the event ended at Backlash, but how is the match they dragged out there to try and pretend to be the main event? Hands down the best segment of the match was when it was between Mick, Rock, and Triple H. Before and after that is dull. Big Show seemed to get in the match solely to satisfy the McMahon in each corner gimmick. Then when it was down to Rock and Triple H alone, it was really bland. It's even more frustrating how the McMahon's shoehorned themselves into a Wrestlemania main event. Vince went heel again at the end. Big deal. No one cared. Everyone knew it was a matter of time anyway. And the Vince vs. Shane brawl before that ate up WAY too much time for no reason. Without the McMahon melodrama, this would have been 6 points easily. But due to how forced, boring, and predictable their drama was, I had to knock it down a point. What could have been a decent main event turned into nothing but ego stroking."

[1.0] "So the first important thing to happen in this match is The big show is IMMEDIATELY eliminated, really making sure that they kill any hope of The Big Show ever being taken seriously again. Seriously, this was the death of him as a character and just the absolute weakest way to build a monster. Then after he gets eliminated they all just fuckin stare at each other for like 2 minutes as Triple H tries to mime out a story for us all. Triple H constantly breaks up pins despite this being an elimination match. So fucking stupid. I give everyone a lot of credit as the crowd is definitely up for this. HILARIOUS FUCKING MOMENT where Mick tries to dive off the top rope to the announce table but totally does not make it. And this is Mick basically teaming up with Triple H to beat up the Rock which makes no fucking sense, since Triple H just retired the guy. Then Triple H basically just eliminates Mick Foley, to no fuckin avail whatsoever. Just an absolutely stupid booking decision and made it all the more pointless that he was added to this match at all. He softly hits Triple H in the face with the barbed wire 2x4 and then leaves. The Rock covers Triple H but of course Triple H kicks out. They go brawl outside for a long while, there's a spot where Triple H hits the rock with a chair while the rock's holding the steel steps, then Triple H hits a piledriver on the steel steps. He rolls the rock back in the ring and the rock kicks out. The Rock reverses a pedigree by sending Triple H outside with a back body drop and Triple H takes it on his hip, big bump. More brawling outside, brawl into the crowd. Back at ringside its a bad spinebuster to Triple H. then he sends him through the announce table with a vertical suplex. Thank god we get Vince vs. Shane in the middle of this to make it all worth it. Stephanie looks on like she's brain dead and just gawks at them. Vince also doesn't sell, great theme of this match, and then he levels shane with a couple of awful looking punches. Shane gives Vince a low blow and then they crawl around on the floor in their suits before Shane gives Vince a chair shot. Please dear god let this end soon. Michael Clarke Duncan is there! Legitimately thats the most exciting thing in this entire match. Rock and Triple H punch each other for a while before The Rock hits a DDT that leads to a pin. Stephanie literally doesnt do anything but stare wide eyed its insanely annoying. there's an awful looking tilt-a-whirl and then Triple H hits the rock with a barbed wire, because somehow now this is just a no dq match despite it being an elimination match. Shane gets into the ring and the rock catapaults Triple H into him. Rock hits a rock bottom on HHH. Shane is gonna hit The Rock with a chair but Vince comes back down and has bladed and then clears out Shane, and OMG SWERVE! Vince hits the rock and lets Triple H win. None of this makes any sense, its stupid as shit. The rock kicks out though, so Vince hits him again. Then Triple H wins. The crowd is 100% dead for this, the Mcmahons just made this about them and no one really cares. Crowd wanted so badly to enjoy this and it was just lame as hell, stupid wrestling. People start throwing shit into the center of the ring because this is so bad. This is a fail of a main event and one of the worst main events I've ever seen in any wrestling event just in terms of awful awful booking."

That said, this was the first WrestleMania main event I've ever seen, and perhaps in retrospect I could have picked a better main event. Many have always said that this match should have been a closed deal between The Rock and Triple H (which we later saw at Backlash 2000), but to continue the experiment of only multi-man matches of Wrestlemania 2000, they opted for the "A McMahon in every corner" storyline. The match itself is quite strange, and VERY overbooked, as you would expect from an Attitude Era main event. As I said it's difficult to accurately give a rating to this match: so many things happen that someone could feel entertained and someone else could be terribly bored, and honestly I felt both sensations. In some situations I enjoyed it, in others I had the feeling that a hammer on the testicles would have been more edifying. In addition, the match is unjustifiably long. Almost 40 minutes end up tiring the viewer, despite the massive dose of overbooking. I certainly won't forget this main event easily, but I don't know if for right or wrong reasons"

Unfortunately, this match IS the main event of the biggest wrestling show of 2000. As a match, it is very dull, featuring no memorable spots. But, what drags this match down further is the absolutely atrocious psychology on display. The most egregious display is obviously Foley teaming with HHH to try and eliminate the Rock; it was in the months prior to this match that Foley had been involved in a blood feud against HHH that concluded with Foley being forced to retire (which this match totally ruined). Yet, in this match, he and HHH are able to coexist to try and eliminate the Rock who, it must be stated, is a long-time ally of Foley as one-half of the Rock 'n' Sock Connection. It's just nonsensical to watch. The Big Show is barely in this match as he is eliminated very quickly, so nothing to talk about there. After Foley is eliminated, the Rock and HHH proceed to have a very dull brawl before McMahon melodrama consumes the match; it leads to Vince turning heel by attacking the Rock (who could've seen that one comin'; eh? ) and forming the McMahon-Helmsley Regime. Oh, and the match itself drags on for over 35 minutes. Ugh. Overall, I recommend avoiding this match unless you really want to watch every 'Mania main event; otherwise, this is a total waste of time. *3/4"

With that said, it didn't need to last 38 minutes, and didn't need the McMahons to take the spotlight."

HHH being the first heel to close out Mania with a win felt like an obnoxious self service to many people, but despite that and the McMahon's making it mostly about them, the match was decent. Big Show got eliminated early then things picked up. Mick Foley being brought back for "One Final Match" was bittersweet and the crowd was royally pissed when he got eliminated. Match ends with Vince McMahon turning on Rock and helping HHH retain. I didn't hate it as much as other people. Better get used to it WWFE fans, you are going to be seeing the HHH circle jerk for the next 6 or 8 years."

The match was ultimately far too long and slow with HHH and the Rock being gassed by the end of it, and there being too many repeated spots. The family drama nonsense took away from it as well. All that said, there was a lot of good stuff here, and the mix of styles of the four men was interesting, but not quite enough to be great."

Big Show had some dominance early on until everyone went against him and eventually the big man got eliminated. Match noticeably improves when it's down to just Foley, HHH and Rock, we got some double teaming up and good brawling up until Foley's elimination. Rock and Triple H had a good one-on-one match but I'd say the match drop starts when we have to watch a Shane and Vince brawl as Rock and HHH sat in the ring and did nothing. Ending with Vince turned on The Rock and it took two chair shots to the head to put him down, we got a near fall that still gave you hope he was gonna win. It was like Russo came back for one night to book the main event down the stretch. Good match that had a hot crowd with a bad finish.***3/4"

Foley is back one month after his retirement and his heart is not in this at all and his entire appearance feels like such an afterthought. Show is eliminated quickly after a triple team attack, signaling the end for his main event run. Clocking in at over 36 minutes and with a Mcmahon in the corner for each wrestler, this was way too long and the overabundance of Mcmahon involvement hindered what could have been a great match between Rock and Triple H."
