Randy Savage vs. The Ultimate Warrior

[9.0] "Genuinely a fantastic match, which was not something that I thought I would ever say about the Warrior. Savage was at his heelish best here, and sherri fulfilled her role PERFECTLY. UW kicking out of five elbow drops was a bit much. But that's me nit picking. The real joy in this match came after the bell when Miss Elizabeth and Randy finally reunited. Staged aggressively and with zero subtlety, but it's still magic. The crowd reactions were incredible. Banger."

[10.0] "This is truly incredible. Randy Savage with an absolute all time great performance, what he was able to pull off here is unbelievable. He forced Warrior to step up, and he did, having a career best showing. Sherri also played her role perfectly. The crowd is hot the entire way through. All of this along with the iconic post match angle, just wonderful. Updating to a 10, cause when thinking more about it, I like it more than other matches I have given 10."

[10.0] "Came back to rate this match as I have recently rewatched it. My favorite match growing up. This match was so good, I thought both UW and Macho were great in ring performers. Just goes to show that Randy Savage was THAT good. A long match that tells such a good story it feels like it goes by quickly. A classic and if you weren't born yet, go back and watch it."

[5.0] "Hoy el Rey / No puede ser feliz porque no tiene ni castillo ni amor / Hoy el Rey / No puede ser feliz porque no tiene ya su amor ? ... What good is it to be a loveless king? Even more, who cares that you are old and got your ass beat when you have your darling baby at your side? Bumped the rating just for the post-match stuff, that, while told as explicit and as dumb-proof as possible, I AM a softie so this shit gets to me, man... The match is nothing really to write home about, not even in the emotional side of things. The only memorable stuff bell-to-bell are the five elbow drops and kick-out, and then the running shoulder tackles by Warrior, who are still a little bit weird, but maybe just for the unexpectedness. [5.5]"

[9.0] "What a truly stellar match. Savage and Warrior both plays their roles excellently, but particular mention has to go to Sensational Sherri in Savage's corner, who was brilliant here, causing a lot of distractions, getting physical with Warrior, and really capturing her character fantastically, especially with the turn at the end. The closing stretch, with Randy dropping 5 elbows and Warrior kicking out, hulking up, hitting the splash, and then Savage getting his own kick out, should feel overdone, but for some reason it just doesn't, and the dive to the outside hitting the barricade was very well executed. A really excellent match."

[10.0] "It's near sacrilegious to attempt to rate this without factoring in the post-match events. This is one of the greatest bits of storytelling from the entirety of the WWF, and it was the first match that I showed to my wife many years ago. The drama, the romance, the visceral crowd reactions and over-the-top commentary all combine to make this the ultimate showcase. Rewatching it after all these years, I was surprised to see Warrior walk out to the ring instead of run like a maniac. Apparently even he knew the gravitas of the moment. The match itself is a blast, an easy watch that got my six year old hooked when she walked in mid-match (she insisted on watching the wedding afterward - that's how captivated she was). The five elbowdrops from Savage felt like a bit much, but I appreciated how they continued the match for a few minutes afterward. Warrior came across as an absolute oaf, hitting three shoulderblocks in a row with each one knocking Savage out of the ring. He could have easily hit him with some power moves in the ring, causing less work for himself in having to go out of the ring, pull Savage in, etc., but I digress. Anyway, the match is fantastic on its own, but the post-match reunion between Savage and Elizabeth is an all-time moment, and you have to love the reactions of grown men and women crying hysterically. *****"

[6.0] "The match itself is a pretty standard affair. Some good heel work from Savage, along with Sherri and Warrior does his Warrior things. The real greatness of this actually comes after the match with the reunion of Savage and Elizabeth. One of the most emotional moments in wrestling history and one that will be hard to top."

[8.0] "Although I have never been a fan of the Warrior. This is probably the best match of his whole career which is down to being in the ring with Randy Savage. Randy's heel work throughout was great. Sherri was also great in this getting involved in the action and causing distractions throughout. The crowd were very into this one as well. The reunion at the end of the match between Savage and Elizabeth topped off a good match."

[9.0] "Macho Man making his entrance under the boos of the crowd and leaving under a standing ovation with fans actually crying is something special. That post-match reunion between him and Elizabeth is such a heart-warming moment and simply one of the greatest feel-good moments in pro wrestling history. While this match might mostly be remembered and cherished for this moment, the match itself is a wild ride. The drama is off the charts, it's over-the-top, it's intense, it's epic, the crowd is in a trance, and it's a sight to behold. Because from a technical standpoint, this is quite rudimentary, but they have the crowd emotionally invested and in the palm of their hands. Savage killing Warrior with five Flying Elbow Drops and Warrior kicking out is one of the craziest kickouts ever! Savage kicking out of the Ultimate Splash is crazy too, but Warrior calling out his gods is plain silly and almost took me out of what was a sensational match. I actually dig the finish, Sherri demeaning Randy, and the rest is history, and no romance angle has even come close to this ever since. Macho Man's retirement didn't last long, but this moment lives forever. **** 1/4"

[9.0] "The match was Great but I felt like It needed a bit more to be a 10, The storyline going through the Royal Rumble and more, when Warrior lost against Sgt. Slaughter with Randy Savage interfering, all set for this match that maybe If sensational Sherri wasn't interfering that much, I would've give it 10, but after all, It was entertaining, the crowd was into it, And then Miss Elizabeth putting the Queen Sherri on her place after attacking Macho Man was good, 9/10 [****3/4]"

[10.0] "[5.0*] I absolutely loved this match because it showed exactly what this sport is all about. The Ultimate Warrior is a well known bad wrestler and 99, 99% of the indy wrestlers from nowadays clear him in terms of workrate, but his showing on this match was absolutely phenomenal and the fact that he is a bad wrestler who only does strikes, shoulder tackles and slams is what gave this match so much charm in my opinion, mixing up with Macho Kings undeniable talent and ability to carry anyone to a great match, with the addition of being a phenomenal storyteller besides being an incredible wrestler. The match was super simple with a story executed to perfection and a super fucking hot crowd, the special ingredient of this bout. It was just electric from start to finish, with some moments that let me on the edge of my seat. My favorite one was when Savage did 5 Flying Elbow Drops, Warrior kicked out and no sold it doing his classic taunt, which let the crowd on fire and they all stood up. Absolutely crazy visual, insane stuff, I was in awe. The post match is also legendary, with the camera showing a lot of people fucking crying when Savage and Miss Elizabeth finally reunited. This was more of a movie rather than a wrestling match and it was glorious."

[10.0] "This ain't a perfect match but I'm listening to my heart instead of my head for this one. This is the one of the best performances I've ever seen from Savage going full Memphis heel and getting every bit of heat he could out of this crowd. Warrior puts in the performance of his career, not gassing himself out on the entrance to make sure he can go the distance, and be the ultimate conquering babyface. Randy kicking out of the press and splash is one of my favourite kickouts ever, and the post match is the greatest face turn of all time. Beautiful scenes."

[8.0] "The crowd was very hot, and at several points it felt like the match was about to end. The main drawbacks for me were the excessive interference from Sensational Sherri and the rather simple finish. Randy Savage exceeded expectations by delivering an above-average match with The Ultimate Warrior, and the post-match segment is also worth mentioning. 8/10 [****]."

[10.0] "This is my favorite match of all time. The storytelling is second-to-none. Randy Savage deserves all the credit in the world."

[9.0] "The Warrior's two best matches were Wrestlemania 6 and 7. 6 is nothing short of a miracle because of Hogan's limitations but 7 is less surprising. Savage is great and the storyline was even better. Of course Savage was back wrestling 7 months later but I digress. This match had so much drama and suspense. Each guy kicking out of their respective finishers made them question if they could actually beat the other. The post match stuff was also amazing with the reunion with Elizabeth. One of the all time best Wrestlemania matches."

[8.0] "One of the most emotional matches mixed with soap opera ever. Ref bump and Sherri's interference added a significant value."

[5.0] "The elbow drops spot is one of the worst kickouts I've ever seen. There was no need for so many and then the match to go on. Two at most would have done the job to create the impact of Warrior's power. It's absolutely ridiculous and way more contrived than something like Gargano's kickouts at Takeover New York."

[8.0] "Randy Savage proves yet again why he is one of the greatest of all time in this match. The storytelling is beautifully captivating, the action is good and Warrior plays his role well, and it all concludes with the memorable moment of Savage and Elizabeth reuniting at last. Incredible watch from start to finish, Randy Savage is at this point in time without a doubt Mr. Wrestlemania."

[8.0] "This match told a great story and was one of the rare examples of multi finisher kickouts in this era. Honestly the in-ring action in this matchup holds up today, getting a great in ring performance from the Ultimate Warrior. The story and interferences from Sherri were done well. Overall, very good match and mania moment after."

[7.0] "A very well-executed match. The Ultimate Warrior has great chemistry with the Macho Man, and it's the only chemistry he has with anyone... Sherri is truly insufferable on the outside, and it plays into the post-match segment, which is one of the best WWE has ever offered us. I still get goosebumps every time I watch it again. What incredible acting. (3*3/4)"

[8.0] "This is probably my favourite match from the Golden Age. The actual wrestling is as simple as it gets, but it didn't need to be anything else as these two had the crowd hooked from their entrances. The crowd heat is by far the best aspect of this; it is a clear cut example of how a hot crowd can elevate a good match to a great match. They pop for everything Savage and Warrior do, and go crazy toward the end on the nearfalls helping to inflate the drama and tension into the stratosphere. The commentary from Monsoon and Heenan was fantastic also; those two were always enjoyable together but they are really effective here in getting across the stakes and selling the drama. Savage was as tremendous as you'd expect here. He was bumping around like crazy for Warrior and made his opponent look more like a force of nature than a pro wrestler. I will also give some rare praise to the Ultimate Warrior who turned in the best performance of his entire career. He actually switched things up a tad here; he did not run to the ring, and did a great job of selling just how important the match was which was essential for conveying the stakes of a career vs. career bout. That's not to say I thought his wrestling was any better than usual; it still looked as cartoonish and stiff (not in a good way) as ever, and his existential crisis after failing to pick up the win with the big splash was definitely overblown and ridiculous. Nevertheless, I still thought this was his best day at the office even though the bar may be in the ground. Praise must also be given to Sherri Martel who was really the third participant in this given how often she interfered to try and give the Macho King the advantage. Some would say she was excessive in how much she injected herself into the bout, but it worked perfectly in not only adding a bit of doubt as to whether the Warrior would triumph but more importantly on getting heat on Martel to set up Miss Elizabeth coming to Savage's defence in the incredibly well executed post match to facilitate Savage's return to the side of good. I will commend both guys on their pace. There were not many dull moments here. Even in Warrior's other standout bout against Hulk Hogan at WM6, there are moments during the middle portion of the match that were quite dull. Here, however, things were well paced all the way through. Even Savage's wearing down of Warrior with the headlock worked very well in building babyface heat for his comeback, as did the latter kicking out of five straight elbow drops. While some will definitely be bothered by the no selling not long after by Warrior, it is what the fans came to see and they popped big for it so I wasn't as annoyed as I otherwise would've been. Overall, a really great match that owes as much to the fans in attendance that to the participants involved in it. ****"

[8.0] "In many ways, the perfect showcase of some of the amazing storytelling that defined the WWF's golden era. Everything from the pre-match video package until the moment when Savage and Elizabeth walk into the back is selling the gravitas of the situation at play. The two biggest guys in the entire company, outside of Hogan, fighting one-on-one, not for a belt, not for a #1 contendership, but rather their careers, about as high-stakes as you can get. That pit in your stomach everyone involved in this match is able to leave 34 years later is astonishing. Monsoon and Heenan are in top form, they aren't putting on a performance of any kind, they are simply calling the match with all the passion and fire something of its caliber deserves. Sherri is, as always, brilliant. In an era of great (and to be fair some not so great) characters, hardly anyone truly understood their role and did it better than Sherri, she was an absolute enigma whose antics could be quite funny but always devious and threatening. And at the forefront of it all is the Macho King who reformed into the Macho Man by the end of the night. Savage is always the first wrestler I attribute the word "genius" to, and I think this match showcases why. Because yes, Savage does use his body language and to sell the high stakes, but moreso than that, he actually foreshadows his face turn at the end of the match with his facials and move delivery. Because in the context of the story being told, Warrior had been built since his push as an unstoppable babyface musclehead who can call upon the gods to help him find the strength to hardly ever lose. That combined with the fact that he's pissed off at Savage for costing him the world title a few months earlier (though Warrior does an awful job at conveying that but I digress) makes it so where, realistically, Randy would be quite terrified of the fact he's going into a match with this guy where his career is on the line. And sure enough, he does just that. Instead of his attacks and cheating coming off as malicious and focused, they come off as desperate and sloppy. This was the first time Savage had shown any real humanity since his heel turn in '89, making the fans, perhaps without even realizing it, feel a lot more for him, which was quite noticeable given how many cheers he was getting before Sherri attacked him. The only reason why I can't give this emotional storytelling masterclass a higher rating than an 8 is because, when all is said and done, The Ultimate Warrior was still an awful wrestler no matter who he worked with. His shoulder tackles at the end looked good and every now and then he had some decent expressions on his face, but for 95% of this match, he is unbearable to watch. I had thought maybe, given the fact that he walked to the ring instead of sprinting like he's famous for, he was actually going to act vulnerable and give the match some weight. But of course, that would be too much for the greatest man to ever walk the planet, and as soon as he got on the apron, it was back to typical Warrior shenanigans. Never selling the match, but only himself. Savage, Sherri, and the commentators are all out there busting their asses to make the audience belive that they're witnessing something truly historic, and meanwhile Warrior looks like he's on a different planet, one that only has his facepaint, his abs, and all of the fans chanting his name to no end. In terms of his actual in-ring work here, well, that speaks for itself. His moveset is limited, sure, but I don't really care about that. It's rather that everything he does looks terrible. His punches are phony, and his kicks are a laughing stock. It's funny really, in what is universally considered to be by far his best match, Warrior is still so bad that he sinks what could have been an all-time masterpiece into just a really good match. Quite the perfect summarization of the awful person that was Jim Hellwig."

[9.0] "Incredible match. A lot of emotion to it. Probably Warrior's best match ever. The elbow drops kickout was a bit much though especially at the time."

[4.0] "Savage works with Warrior not only because he's a way better wrestler in general but also because he often pre-planned his matches and would make sure to get it down to the last detail. I think this really works in Warrior's favour as the match was mostly dictated by Savage. He did some nice heel work and Sherri played her part well. I do have a problem with the ending feeling rather flat."

[7.0] "Ok so this match is realy here to alow what happens after thw match to happen and liz and macho togther agin is an all time wretling moment, but once agin on thia card this match is juat to long. It has alot of thw same spots hapening agin and agin and it makes most of this match sort of boring but the last few mins are amzing. Also not a fan of warrior kicking out of five elbows. Still this is a big time feeling match that ends in a legdery moment in wrestling so cant be too mad"

[7.0] "I really enjoyed this match it was very dramatic and you could feel the tension with it being career v career. Again great commentary in this era really supplements the action rather than detracting from it like modern WWE commentary does, in my opinion at least. i really did not mind the kick out from five elbow drops, no one was expecting it. I would probably knock off a point just for how silly UW is though."

[10.0] "Sometimes things age badly and remain beautiful. Some relationships are terrible behind the scenes and still can glow in front of the cameras. Miss Elizabeth puts on, no shadow of irony or a joke here, one of the greatest performances in industry history. Every moment the camera cuts to her, the pathos is undeniable. The most beautiful romance movie ending wrestling had achieved up to this point, and remains as THE defining romance for over twenty years. Imagine an angle achieving all of that while being about filthy, filthy, filthy heterosexuals. Sherri plays her part perfectly too, she can't match the subtlety of Elizabeth but she doesn't need to. She is such an excellent heel, and one of the more underrated great minds of wrestling. Macho is still the best wrestler in the WWF, his input is so obviously flawless that it barely requires repeating here. If he hit that series of elbow drops before a kickout in 2025, Vader would rise from his grave, a restless spirit seeking revenge on those killing the business. It happened when everyone here was either a kid or not even born yet so it gets a free pass. It's so fucking good. Warrior was also here."

[10.0] "The interference in this match was very annoying because it was really good. Randy and Queen Sheeri harassed the Ultimate Warrior in every way possible and it was kind of a two-on-one match. (For example, Randy getting pinned by the Ultimate, which Sheeri had distracted the referee and didn't see, and Sherai's interference outside the ring.) The Ultimate Warrior is also a good enough wrestler to know what to do in this situation and was able to take control of the match very well after a while. The two wrestlers worked each other's neck and head very well, especially the 5 elbows that Randy hit on the Ultimate Warrior's neck from the top rope and the Ultimate's thumping was also great. The Ultimate Warrior's spears and closing lines to Randy were also great and set up a great ending."

"This was the match of the PPV and Savage is just incredible. I'm adding this comment so I can rate matches after 7 days."

[9.0] "Oh wow this is amazing and by far the best thing Warrior was ever involved in, which he achieved by being a total passenger. Savage comes out with the white hat signalling the big babyface turn and he works a total miracle as he does the Flair and broomstick match and it's amazing to watch. The crowd is totally into this and we get all the sports entertainment tropes that we know and sometimes love in big matches like this. Pure cinema."

[8.0] "It's shocking to me how many good Warrior matches I've seen in the past year, given that he's objectively terrible. In this one, Savage goes all out to prove that he should keep his job."

[10.0] "Any time Ultimate Warrior has a midlife Warrior spirit crisis in the middle of a match is going to get an easy ***** stars from me."

[9.0] "Very underrated and the best Ultimate Warrior match I've seen. Macho Man is absolutely wonderful in this match. This was so much fun to watch with a rocky crowd. This is a match made great because of Macho Man with Warrior actually playing his part extremely well. This had no right being as good as it was. Legitimately surprised me that Macho Man kicked out of the Warrior splash. Ending segment was great as well and was a great "retirement" match since Macho Man fought like his career depended on it, trying everything he could to beat the Ultimate Warrior but just couldn't. [****1/2]"

[10.0] "A rare 10/10 (5*) match for me and only the chronological second so far for the WWF that I've given out. It's not a huge coincidence that Savage played a part in the first one either. Look, there's a great argument to be made that this is the best pure storytelling and acted match in pro wrestling history. In terms of ring-work, it's slightly held back by Warrior's limitations, but between what Savage/Sherri are doing and the insane nonstop drama and stakes-feel of the match, it never comes close to being anything but fascinating for a single moment. Everyone involved, from the wrestlers to Elizabeth to Sherri to Monsoon/Heenan to the production team elevated this thing to legitimate cinematic levels. It's just a next level, triumphant and emotional storytelling experience that's hard to find in pro wrestling. I don't even like Warrior, at all, and this might be my all-time favorite match. I think some younger people (specifically I mean Gen Z and Gen Alpha) might not realize how big a deal it was to see both of these guys kicking out of multiple finishers, but it was shockingly rare in these days... so the shock factor was monumental. Ever since the post-Attitude era, wrestlers kick out of finishers in main event type matches so often that they might as well not even be called finishers anymore."

[10.0] "***** (10/10) You've gotta give it to the Macho King. He might not have been the biggest name in the industry, but for the first eight WrestleMania no one stole the show quite like Randy Savage. I can't remember whom it was who said that Macho Man had been haunted by how stellar his match with Steamboat in III, because he was always chasing to top it, and no, Savage-Warrior wasn't on the same level in terms of in-ring abilities, but when it came to the story involved inside the angle (and within the performance), the mania within the crowd, and the retirement at stake, it didnt any bigger than this. Even Warrior didn't perform his ecstatic trance on his way to entering the ring, brandishing the iconic fixture between him and Randy Savage as something much more than just a match, something more than a championship belt. As was the case with Savages match in III and VII, and (you'll soon come to see) as was the case with his fight in VIII, Randy Savage performed at the highest level attainable by a sports entertainer of the times, showing why he could have easily been the main event on those shows, stealing the show from being left off the.top of the card"

[10.0] "This is, by far, The Ultimate Warrior's best match and the only one I'd give the full Monty to. Savage must have thought his career was really over here, because they hit you with the feels with the aftermath when Miss Elizabeth tossed Sherri out of the ring. The crowd heat was insane here. Savage dropped 5 flying elbows on the Warrior and he STILL kicked out. The match of the night and maybe the year."

[10.0] "One of the greatest wrestling matches ever, by far the best thing Savage was ever a part of, this is the moment where Randy Savage transcended pro wrestling and became something more, the fact that Savage made us care more about him and Elizabeth then what we paid to see aka the match speaks to his value as one of the greatest storytellers in wrestling history (*****)"

[8.0] "This was awesome. The match was very fast paced with high intensity and some brilliant drama. Savage lost the match, Sherri berated him and he was reunited with Elizabeth. Perfect post match angle; should have main evented."

[8.0] "If you count the angle after the match its a 10. Savage makes the Warrior look like a million dollars"

[8.0] "Easily Warrior's best match. Savage managed to get a great match out of him, and not only that, but it's a fun match. The action is simple but the heel work from Sherri and the storytelling really shine through. The ending where Warrior just tanks 6 elbow drops and kicks out was so unexpected. The way Savage kept trying to blindside him as well made for a really fun dynamic between the two. Then of course the post match segments really hits you in the heart and is one of the best mania moments of all time."

[6.0] "Probably one of if not the Ultimate Warriors best match of his career. Good storytelling although it felt a bit repetitive with Sherri distracting Warrior and Savage attacking him. I know Warrior is supposed to be some super strong thing from a different world but taking 6 elbows and kicking out and pinning Savage with a foot on the chest makes Savage look like a bit of a chump in my opinion"

[8.0] "24/03/1991 Wrestlemania VII WWF. This is a hard match to rate, on one hand it is a classic, the story unfolding has the crowd eating out of the palm of their hand. Although you'd have to say Savage's hand with a hint of Sherri. In saying that it takes two to tango and I would give credit where it is due to Warrior. The importance of even the commentary brings this match together. I think some people missed the importance of Sherri Martel here, she is the filler, as there is no way on earth Warrior could go this whole match without all those breathers and Sherri is the one to take the focus off the match. For everything it gets right it is not perfect and has some major flaws, the 5 elbow drops break out is absolute the shits, even when I was a kid I nearly changed the channel when I seen that for the first time. The finish is lame and some of Warriors selling is below par, although probably above par for him. 7.5* for now"

[9.0] "Very surprised by this macth, obviously macho man I has always been a great worker, but warrior has never worked a great macth until I saw this, the storytelling the emotion and the selling was their all macth, this macth had a great pace throughout, sensational sherrie played her roll to the till, Buisness really picked up at the end when the warrior kicked out of 4 of macho mans elbow drops from the top, the post macth was memorable with Randy savage finally getting back together with miss Elizabeth, this macth stole the show at wrestlemania 7"

[9.0] "This is a classic bout for good reason, as it features two crazy characters beating the stuffing out of one another until one of them caan't get up anymore, with the finish being a good example of that as Warrior just keeps shoulder tackling Savage until The Macho Man is turned to jelly. All I will say is that the last shoulder tackle probably needed to be a bit cleaner, as Savage rolled out of the ring and was briefly standing up at ringside only to then get dragged back in and pinned. I think Savage needed to be flat out on his back outside the ring and Warrior had to make a point of going outside and throwing Savage's limp body in before making the three count"

[10.0] "Between this match and Savage vs. Steamboat, you can argue that Macho Man pioneered a great deal of the modern style of wrestling. Where that match had the pace and structure that current day wrestling has built upon, this match may very well be the template of the predominant 'epic' main event style match that we see today - at least as far as western wrestling is concerned, anyway. It really is a special match, and it feels like a true spectacle. Sherri is absolutely magnificent at ringside, and puts in a performance worthy of one of the greatest valets of all time. She has so much personality, and adds so much to the match. The crowd is completely engrossed in the action, and they absolutely succeed at making this feel like a 'big time' confrontation. The series of elbow drops that Warrior kicks out of are controversial, and it's generally the sort of spot that I dislike, but something about it just works for me here. The context of it being a retirement match (in theory at least) along with something so rarely done in this era certainly helps. You could argue that the finish is a little underwhelming, and it definitely is a bit strange, but I think Savage's selling is so terrific that it still works. The post-match remains one of the greatest moments in WrestleMania history, and feels even more poignant today after the passing of both Savage and Miss Elizabeth. I debated my rating a bit because I don't think the match is quite 'perfect' as such, but there was just something in the air on this night, and everything hit in a way that is hard to replicate or even to explain. While Savage vs. Steamboat is the first 'WrestleMania classic', I think this would have to be the first 'WrestleMania epic', and when viewed as a complete moment and not just a match, it really is something special."

[8.0] "Insanely fun match, is wild to see wrestlers as bad as Ultimate Warrior giving INCREDIBLE matches. I love the camera work, the faces they make, the incredible spots, is such a good match, which is surprising for warrior, but not for Macho Man, he has been the most watchable thing on all the wrestlemenias so far."

[10.0] "This match is what wrestling is all about. Randy Savage was one of the greatest of all time and arguably the best wrestler that was on the WWE roster of the 1980s. Ultimate Warrior from an in-ring ability standpoint is in contention for being the worst of all time, but what the Ultimate Warrior lacked in the wrestling aspect the man radiated in abundance looking and speaking the part of his character. In the modern era fans today are so used to wrestlers kicking out of multiple finishing moves, back in 1991 it was unheard of in North America. This Retirement Match was the greatest the Ultimate Warrior ever had and the post match aftermath of Randy Savage reuniting with Miss Elizabeth is a top 5-10 WWE moment."

[6.0] "Everything about this match was incredible besides the action between the ropes. The storyline was perfectly done, the mentality and body language both men used during the match showed how important and desperate they were, and the crowd was eating out of the palm of their hand. Savage also does EVERYTHING to try and cement Warrior's importance, and it's sad to me that I don't think Warrior realized or respected that. Not only that, but they got the subtle things right, too. For instance, if you notice, Heenan on commentary dialed his heel character back to be an almost unbiased color man. He's almost entirely down the middle here, maybe showing the slightest of bias towards Savage. Having the heel commentator being so respectful of what this match meant to both men made the match feel 'real.' It gave the match a legitimacy and importance you could tell right away. Then the reunion with Elizabeth at the end was absolutely perfect. It gives this bittersweet feeling of "Well, Savage is gone, but at least we can be happy seeing him go." This match is probably a 9 out of 10 in terms of nuance and feeling. Unfortunately, as they say, the bell had to ring. While Warrior certainly has had worse matches, I have to balk at people saying that Savage pulls a great match out of him. Warrior is maybe slightly above average here. The pace is just...really lethargic. The constant interference from Sherri gets annoying, too. I think things would have felt much more significant if Sherri let this match play out clean and then helped Savage towards the end when he was getting desperate. I think the crowd would have gotten much hotter at her if she ran interference or made a save at a crucial moment rather than getting involved every few minutes. Besides a few close finishes, the match was barely average, and then you have Warrior kicking out of several elbows, followed by a lame foot on the chest finish. I don't see any reason why the finish had to be so disrespectful to both Savage himself and his finish. In hindsight, I also find it kind of ironic that the man who was retired here would be fighting for the world title one year from now, while the winner would be making a short lived return stint to the company at the same event. Overall, there aren't many other matches that have such a 'big fight feel' and such care and attention put into them as this one does. Especially in this era. Unfortunately, though, I just don't find they were able to deliver the goods to the level of the feel and story they created, leading to a bit of a let down. A 9 out of 10 story, and a 3 out of 10 match, so I met it halfway and gave it six points."

[8.0] "I'm gonna start this off by saying that this really should've been the main event of this show. These two had a hell of a feud going for a while and considering the stakes and aftermath of this match why the fuck would I want to see anything after this? The show only last maybe two more matches before it falls of a cliff completely in terms of quality with them always putting shitter before Hogan and then the Hogan match not even being good. Now into the match...I really fucking enjoy this match. I did not expect this one as much as I did, but let's be honest, that is all due to Macho Man; he killed it here. I will say that Warrior kicking out of all those elbows was absolutely ridiculous but doesn't ruin the match completely for me; remember this was supposed to be a shoot retirement at the time. After the match we get the five star angle with Miss Elizabeth and Macho Man reuniting after Sherri starts beating on Randy; such a beautiful, emotionally charged, and real feeling moment."

[6.0] "I get it that it's the Career vs Career match but they overdid it with the false finishes for me. When Warrior kicked out of five Elbow Drops they lost me, even though I was really into this match for the most part. They got me back a few minutes later, but the finish itself wasn't the best either with Warrior winning after a Shoulder Tackle. Apart from that though it felt like a huge match. Savage was great and Sherri worked her ass off for the whole match to build the aftermath and make Randy's reunion with Elizabeth feel even more special. All in all good stuff, but some things could have been kept simple."
