Unfortunately the fiveish minutes preceding it are WWE's old hardcore matches before they've learned to lean into the chaos that made the 01 era of the hardcore title so much fun."

Very basic "hardcore" stuff that paled in comparison with ECW, and of course designed to make Shane McMahon look as impressive as possible. I am not opposed to silly hardcore spots but it didn't seem to fit the theme of the match well, and they definitely just sort of let spots happen for the sake of them. So it goes I guess."

Shane did what he could here but blackman made the match for me, what an incredible bump to end the match though. Interferences annoy me but at least test and albert do some cool shit lmao, and blackman had some nice comebacks. Enjoyed!"

Nowadays we often see internet wrestling community revisioning how actually was Attitude Era wrestling-wise and it's hard not to agree with them that most of the big moments or spectacles are built at the expenses of absolutely structureless and messy brawl-style bouts that are flat out boring. Yes, the ending is a thrill; but the rest is nothingness. There spot where Blackman just easily puts a trashcan over Shane and uses him as a drum made me cringe my eyes out."

(Trash Cans, Trash Lids, Kendo Sticks, etc.) Blackman is whooping Shane until T&A makes the save which allows Shane to get the heat on Blackman. This leads to Blackman's come back and the spot everyone rememembers with Shane getting canned off the top of the trust. A match that's kinda there for me and the only big positive for me was Shane getting his ass kicked until he got help and not someone who was on equal footing with the wrestlers. **"

The spot where he makes Shane wear the trash can looked kinda brutal. Test and Albert interfere and that's pretty much the only time Shane gets any offense at all and there's a call back to what happened to Big Show at Judgment where Test tries to push a big speaker on Blackman's leg but he misses. Eventually he takes them out of the match and chases Shane up the SummerSlam tron and Shane's fall was an amazing spot. He'd become well remembered for stuff like this and it's one of the matches that made me a fan of him as he really went above and beyond to make the revenge angle look really satisfying."

Only better spot for me is mankind falling from top of the hell in a cell twice."

Apart from that it's basically a Handicap Match with T&A interfering and half of the bout was them beating up defenseless Blackman."

Into the crowd and Blackman whacks him with the trash can then back to ringside. Blackman hits a thrust kick off the guardrail then Test and Albert show up and work him over. All 4 fight back to the entrance way where Blackman outmaneuvers them then chases Shane up the scaffolding, in a spot that can end only one way. Blackman knocks him off 50 feet down to one of those hidden mat areas and dives off with an elbow drop for the pin. A LOT of people goo over this one, but aside from the finish I wasn't totally into it."

Then it gets taken away from us, which makes us root for Blackman even more. Then the finale is just wow, it's one of the best moments in WWE history and the match elevated Blackman and especially Shane. Only real issue I have with the match is the first few minutes do feel iffy, but after that it's a joy to watch."

Marx Kane wrote on 08.05.2021:
[8.0] "A very symbolic hardcore brawl with Blackman on top for most. Unlike today, McMahon is not too overpowered, so needs help from cronies Test and Albert to help him try to retain his title belt. Blackman had cut out a niche in the hardcore scene, with many of his signature spots performed here. Props to both men for climbing the 50-foot high scaffold, with Shane taking a tremendous fall before Steve took a huge leap himself. Always liked Blackman, a lack of charisma but he made up for it as a comedic straight man and unique style. A match defined by a single spot, it deserves all the props to both men for the spot for its tremendous nature."

It's one of those bumps where it was carefully planned out, yet you still cringe watching it because of how dangerous it looked. The rest of the match is pretty average stuff. **1/2"
