[6.0] "This Backlash was good, had good matches like the Submission Match and the Hardcore title match, but to the last part of this with the European title match and the Main Event where they put all the titles, throw me back a bit, but in general it's a great show. 6/10"

[6.0] "I thought turning Austin heel was a huge misstep in 2001. He was still so popular even after the heel turn. It just didn't work. This was the most forgettable PPV of 2001. I don't remember ever rewatching it as a kid and I only mildly enjoyed it today."

[7.0] "While history will tell you, the WWF's decline in popularity and quality was directly after WM X7, Backlash 2001 is a pretty solid show all things considered, but it's definitely a huge step down following an incredible three PPV run at the start of the year. A lot of that can be accredited to Steve Austin's misguided heel turn which was in full effect on this show. The main evet saw the heel team of Austin and HHH take on the Brothers of Destruction in a fine tag match, further dictating the future of the WWF product before real life intervened. Stealing the show is Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit who had a gripping and intense submission match. Even better than the Mania match, the two men put on a MOTY contender which easily stole the show. Other highlights include a fun hardcore bout between Raven and Rhyno and a last man standing match between Shane and Big Show which featured another death defying stunt from Shane. Asides from an X-Factor win at the start of the show, the rest of Backlash ranges from forgettable to fine. Backlash 2001 may not have lived up to the high standards the WWF have set for themselves at this point, but it was enjoyable and the fall-off was still yet to come."

[6.0] "You might think that the company burned themselves out after having their best PPV of all-time in Wrestlemania 17, but one month later and they deliver another incredible show. Backlash might not have show-stopping performances to the degree that it'd be considered one of the companies gems, but what it does bring is a quality event from start to finish. Even my lowest matches on this card aren't ones I'd call bad. And it is pretty rare to not have one stinker in there. Just a through and through good show that continues the momentum Wrestlemania had. Certainly worth a watch or rewatch."

[9.0] "I thought this was a really good PPV from top to bottom with a really good card that had a great variety and a much better show than what was anticipated. The main event was really good with Austin and Triple H becoming the new tag team champions against Undertaker and an injured Kane. Benoit v Angle was another techincal classic and had a very unique stipulation. Rhyno v Raven was a great Hardcore Title match and Shane McMahon vs Big Show was a memorable spectacle where Shane has an unbelievable crash and burn spot where he won by diving off the top of the tron! Plus I thought the Regal v Jericho match was hilarious as well. There wasn't anything at all here that stood out as bad and while this PPV is in the shadow of the previous 3 that came before it, it doesn't deserve to be slept on as its a great show in it's own right."

[7.0] "A solid show throughout. Very entertaining and very underrated. This card had something for everyone. You want a crazy hardcore match? This show has that with Rhyno vs Raven. You want Shane to jump from Heaven? This show has that with a last man standing match against the Big Show. You want technical wrestling? This show has Kurt vs Benoit in a 30 minute, submission only iron man match. Just a little something for everybody and it makes for a very cool PPV."

[7.0] "A PPV that probably flies under the rader as it follows a string of 3 better shows, but that still is an enjoyable watch. None of the matches are particularly amazing but there's nothing that goes below decent either. You've got athletic sprints, one comedic match, one technical style a hardcore sprint a crazy Shane dive and a stacked main event so there's something for everyone here. Match Ratings: X Factor vs the Dudleys (6/10) Rhino vs Raven (7/10) Regal vs Jericho (6/10) Benoit vs Angle (7/10) Shane vs Big Show (6/10) European title Triple Threat (6/10) Two Man Power Trip vs Brothers of Destruction (7/10)"

"Solid event, strong follow up to the greatest wrestling event of all time, WM X-7. Plenty of variety and some strong gimmick matches.( Big Show v Shane LMS, Regal v Jericho Duchess rules, Angle v Vacant submission, Rhino v Raven hardcore). Main event is fun, right decision having the two man power trip go over. PPV holds up well over time, fun rewatch. 7.0 out of 10."

[6.0] "Everything on this show felt like a warm-up before the main event full of star power, but I didn't mind it since almost everything here was at least decent. The opener was fine, Rhyno vs Raven was one of rare more enjoyable hardcore matches and Regal with Jericho had a brilliant idea for their contest. Benoit vs Angle was phenomenal from the technical standpoint although not the best in terms of the crowd's reactions, Shane vs Show was all about the bump at the end and the European Title Triple Threat Match felt like a filler before the main event, which was the best thing on the show. Austin coming back to his heel roots worked wonders for my enjoyment of him, since he's back to having actual in ring matches and taking these phenomenal quick snap bumps, alongside his incredible overall body language. The crowd was alive for the whole match and all four guys worked their asses off, even Taker who I have not been a fan of lately. Overall a decent follow up to WrestleMania with heel Stone Cold bringing some new life into me."

[6.0] "Pretty average show really, the best match being Benoit/Angle and everything else being fine but nothing to go out of your way for. The biggest flaw was that every match apart from the opening one had some sort of stipulation or gimmick, which was a bit too much for a show like this."
GonzoAppreciator wrote on 08.02.2023:
[7.0] "Despite a meh opener and overly long main event, this was still a really solid show. Benoit/Angle was great and Rhyno/Raven was one of the best hardcore matches in the WWF's history. Jericho/Regal was also a fun bit of character work for Regal and a nice continuation of their feud."

[7.0] "This was a good show with nothing being bad but nothing being exceptionally great like you would expect on PPV. Rhyno/Raven was one of the best hardcore title matches with them actually bringing creativity into the match, Regal/Jericho had some great character work, Benoit/Angle had the intensity you would expect from those two, and the Shane match was elevated by Shane? s usually high spot, and the main event had a big feet feel to it although it took some time to get going. Matches from best to worst: Benoit/Angle ***3/4, Rhyno/Raven ***1/2, Two man Power Trip/ Brothers of Destruction ***1/2, Jericho/Regal ***, Shane/Show ***, Christan/Hardy/Guerrero **3/4, sixth man tag **1/2,"

[8.0] "This is much better than expected. Almost every match is good or even great. The Ultimate Submission match between Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle, Raven vs Rhyno, an all-stars main event, or the match for the European title. Except for the opener, every match is good to see, so I think it's an interesting pay per view to watch."

[7.0] "A good show to follow Wrestlemania. The opener was decent but nothing special **. Rhyno vs Raven was better, one of the better hardcore title match **3/4. Jericho vs Regal was really fun, I liked the idea of Regal constantly changing the rules throughout, better than their Mania Match ***. Benoit vs Angle was great as you'd expect but there was a few dull moments due to both its length and stipulation but still great ****1/4. Show vs Shane was pretty good, a short match compared to most Last Man Standing Matches but was fun match as is most Shane Matches though there wasn't much in the way of wrestling as you'd expect, but the final sport was amazing **3/4. The triple threat was good especially for the short time, easy to watch with no dull moments, just constant action nothing amazing but still a good match though I imagine could have been so much better given 10mins or so instead, ***. Now the Main Event was brilliant, very punchy kicky as you'd expect with 4 primarily brawling type wrestlers. Some great Tag psychology with the isolation of Kane. HHH and Austin worked Kane's arm well and were great heels and the crowd were really involved as you'd expect in any match featuring these 4, why this match isn't on the matchguide I'll never know. I really enjoyed it, my rating ****. A good show but really only two matches worth seeing."
