[8.0] "EVIL's ability to lead a match is seconded only to his ability to draw genuine antipathy out of certain corners of the fandom. He's sort of like the Japanese answer to Jeff Jarrett in that regard; an undeniably talented professional wrestler who is always going to have a muddied reaction due to being overexposed and working a style deliberately designed to aggravate the audience. I am convinced Gedo lives virariously through this man."

[1.0] "When a wrestler says that he wants to have the worst match of the night because every fan says he does, you know he is cooked. EVIL has an interesting story and he can at least move in the ring (still has bad matches though) but damn HoT sucks and he is the owner of that shameless faction. EDIT: Changing my rating from a 3 to a 1, for no other reason than EVIL being the worst wrestler of 2025, with the biggest amount of horrible matches."

[9.0] "Let's give credit where credit is due, because this guy grew on me from some time ago 'till here. When he was in LIJ, I always thought the darkside, serious, sorcerer style of EVIL was cool, but that couldn't hide the fact his moveset was pretty basic and not very believable, and his STO (aka Everything Is EVIL) looked weak and weird. After leaving LIJ in 2020, you could feel a certain twist in his personality, with EVIL moving away from his supernatural stuff, becoming more "humanized", and his finishing move even seemed to look more real, but still lacking to adapt with everything new, which is what caused Naito to regain his belts quicker. In 2021 however, House of Torture was formed, and while the group itself sucks, it helped EVIL to finally find his niche: be a self delusional, greedy, goofy, blind believer of his own justice, and while sometimes he comes off as funny, he never loses seriousness and always finds a way to piss people off by still being a villain, even other heels like the War Dogs themselves. He finally found himself, as the guy you always hope to see losing, even though it won't be the case at times. Got it? Remember that!"

[4.0] "Evil honestly not a good wrestler he is very very mid but have good heel work sometimes. his faction is bad and his gimmick , is awfull. his moves is not good his matches is boring im not a hater but i don't like Evil."

[10.0] "Best heel in the business, gets it like few, the 0, 1 and 2 ratings in here come from non Japanese fans who truly think that NJPW faces issues due to EVIL's presence, while it's a whole different thing. This is a man who, after returning from excursion, was given hokey makeup, multicolored hair, a purple singlet and a scythe and told "Watanabe, you are now King Of Darkness EVIL, make it work pal", and he did. Now, did being part of the coolest stable of the last decade in LIJ help him? Sure, but it's not that being in LIJ equals automatic stardom, otherwise BUSHI would've been a top player. EVIL was a genuinely exciting, cool and badass brawler in a company that was and to a certain degree remains hellbent on 30+ minute long, epic and overdrawn workrate main events. His 2020 turn and sudden main event switch suffered as a result of the pandemic and not being given enough room to adjust, also the timing was all over the place due to the calendar, but since HOT has been formed EVIL has been a consistent heel who has mastered the art of selling and making his faces look strong in overcoming all the BS he and Togo throw at them. This is a clear sign of talent, given that his previous iteration as fast-paced no nonsense gothic brawler required his opponent to mostly sell his offense and put in a lot of work to beat him, as even in his depressing losses ridden 2019 he was never beaten easily. A wrestler who has also shown glimpses of his exceptional brawling skills, making the crowd wow despite being positioned as NJPW's most despicable and morally absent individual, given this booking partially due to him not being prone to fully deliver on NJPW's "typical" style, but I still hold hope that he has the ability to have a redemption story, because HOT EVIL has now lasted longer than LIJ EVIL, and it might be time for a revamp."

[6.0] "He has the looks but every time he shows up it feels like he is serving the same reheated leftovers. The gimmick has been stuck in the same gear for years. A guy who peaked long ago but keeps insisting the magic is still there. He's alright in the ring and has acceptable in-ring psychology."

[0.0] "The most mediocre and SHOVED DOWN OUR THROATS wrestler ever. Seriously? Who decided to get him to the finals of the G1 Climax? Or win the NEVER Openweight title? He's not even good either. Yep. In a world of wrestlers from NJPW. We have Konosuke Takeshita. We have Kota Ibushi. We have Shingo Takagi. SO MANY good wrestlers. And who does Gedo decide to push? To treat as his golden boy? EVIL. A wrestler who lacks ANY Charisma. A wrestler who is in one of the most m-m-mid factions ever. A wrestler who had a mediocre match with Hiroshi Tanahashi of ALL PEOPLE. Evil. You push Evil. Give me a damn break."

[3.0] "EVIL isn't a horrible wrestler, he can have good matches from time to time. The issue is how all of his matches are built and structured, the run ins and interferences are overdone and usually ruin every single match he has."

[4.0] "Before people start going "Oh, but his work in LIJ was great! " yes, I know it was! But I cannot for the life of me remove the stench that is 2025 Evil, who somehow had a passable good TV calibre match in the G1 Climax finals with Konosuke fuckin Takeshita! He isn't good, and that's purely because of the limits his faction presents with the run-ins, the cheating and the bland heel work, I don't like it, I don't like Evil.... As a wrestler, but other than that he's quite the funny lad though I'll give him points for making me laugh a bunch lmao"

[9.0] "I may be one of the few people that actually love EVIL. My favorite wrestler today and one of my all time favorites. He may not be the most technically sound wrestlers, but I think when he gets the chance like in the G1 he can be compelling in the ring. His character is entertaining and he sells getting beat well. He has a good work ethic and shows up when needed. His heel work is done well (most of the time)."

[1.0] "Probably one of the worst wrestlers in the world right now. No good moves, no compelling matches, no acting ability, no reliability, genuinely what is he doing that has earned him such a big spotlight in New Japan? I'm much more generous to the House of Torture stuff than most but even I have to admit that it is objectively bad, especially when EVIL is involved. Having him beat Tanahashi in the Ace's final G1 match is already fairly absurd, but doing it in the fashion that it was done in was outrageous."

[2.0] "Yeah, this guy is not good at all, same match every time with the same finish and he's being shoved down our throats and then they wonder why no one wants to watch New Japan anymore. You have guys like Uemura, Oiwa, Tsuji and Oleg and you decide to push this guy. He's not a heel that makes you say i don't like him because of his good work but it's go away heat, and i don't think Njpw understand that for some reason"

[2.0] "Heels are supposed to make you hate them, but still make you want to watch the product and root for the faces. EVIL makes me want to stop watching NJPW entirely. HoT is a god awful stable and funnily enough as their leader I think he's the culmination of everything bad with them. The few positives about EVIL are when he's not relying on his gimmick and actually tries to wrestle he's not bad, I like his comedy spots, & I do like how he's willing to do some of the more available hardcore things in NJPW. The negatives are the fact he hardly ever actually wrestles, relies on interference way too much, his matches go the same (ref bump, exposed turnbuckle, another ref bump, low blow attempt, weapon usage off distraction, etc.) and it's just so miserable. I dread HoT coming on my screen but at least Sanada and Douki are entertaining, EVIL is actually woeful. He makes me hate him, sure. But he doesn't make me want to watch the faces try to beat him, it's more of a "please get this over with" feeling. And this part isn't really EVIL's fault obviously, but I hate how strong they make him look even though he's the most cowardly heel with chicken-shit antics. This guy dogwalked Finlay for whatever reason even though Finlay is much more entertaining, and I think IF Finlay stays with NJPW he'd become one of the top guys of this current generation of "next-ups". But anyway, EVIL is an ok wrestler when he's not leaning onto his gimmicks to carry him through matches, but when he does lean on them, he's genuinely abysmal to watch."

[7.0] "I think he's a good heel and a capable wrestler. He's not going to set the world on fire but his job is to make people hate him and they do. The argument to be made is how many fans have stopped watching because of him. That's a little harder to gauge so until we know for sure, I think he's doing his job."

[8.0] "An underrated old school heel. If you hate him, hate his group, and all their cheating? Then he's doing his job."

[3.0] "The solely reason why NJPW crowd's are dead nowadays, it is like he suddenly forgot how to wrestle, from being one of the best all rounder wrestlers in New Japan to a shenannigans abussive character, he is even worse than Toru Yano because, at last, Toru Yano was funny"

[9.0] "i love EVIL. the lynchpin in the HoT, the goat of new japan, the king of darkness. his booking has been inconsistent and people like to blame it on his skill. more than capable of putting on a good match and an incredible character. don't get it twisted, im not a new japan fan, im an EVIL fan"

[4.0] "In theory, there's a lot of potential in swimming against the current of contemporary wrestling to bring back a match-ruining heel style that hasn't been much seen in major Japanese wrestling since the mid-1980s. And EVIL can really play his part, character-wise, and the merciful shortening of most of his matches from the Bushiroad epic lengths to 10-15 minutes has helped concentrate the effectiveness of shenanigans and fuck finishes. But there's still just such a lack of urgency to EVIL stretching all the way back to his emergence as a singles figure out of LIJ. He simultaneously plays up the cowardly cheater type well but never gets it into the right gear of you watching because you need to see this man lose. Instead, you just wait for his matches to be over."

[3.0] "EVIL borderlines one of the worst wrestlers I've seen be consistently bad. His heat has always been the bad go the f away kind, and his in ring ability has never been that good. When he is carried in matches he's only carried to decent matches, with the best of the best being unable to get something good out of EVIL. Bad character bad wrestling, just not good"

[3.0] "He's so bad I made an account here specifically to write this. I started watching NJPW again after a long break and REALLY hoped they changed something with the HoT booking since I enjoyed EVIL in LIJ. Well they did change something, and by that I mean it's somehow worse. EVIL's work is lazy now but nothing that happens in his matches before the run in matters anyway. HoT has to be in contention for the worst stable of all time, it ruins my enjoyment of the show, ruined EVIL and is ruining Ren Narita."

[7.0] "Underrated and totally deserved a better booking after his world championship win. In serious and comedy match, he completely feels in his place."

[4.0] "2015-2020 EVIL was awesome, one of the best that everyone wanted to see become world champ. 2020-current EVIL is only good with the story telling and uses bullshit cheating things in every match, which gets extremely tiring to see but very rarely will someone get a good match out of him."

[4.0] "What a fall. I liked his work with LIJ back in the day, he was a solid upper midcarder performer. The matches with Okada and even Jericho are examples that Evil can put on a good work. The Bullet Club/House of Torture run pretty much destroyed all of the potential he had."

[9.0] "Really underrated, although i am usually a bigger fan of horror gimmicks than most. Evil has had some killer matches over the years in new japan and i think hes one of the most entertaining wrestlers in modern new japan. Ive been going through the 2019 g1 and it's just made me realize how big of a fan i am of his"

[5.0] "Mediocre worker. I mostly know of his BC / HOT runs but from what I've seen of his early LIJ stuff he was just as bland and predictable then. You know what you are going to get will an EVIL match, shenanigans in the finish and plod along work getting to it. Failed to carry the company when given the chance in 2020 and whilst he didn't have the best of luck regarding the timing of his main event push he could have done much better."

[5.0] "It is sad to see how underrated EVIL is. This man is so good in the ring. He can move in the ring and he is an expert at working the crowd. He really seems like he understands the business. His work in Los Ingobernables de Japon is to die for, and it almost hurts to give him a rating of five, but the fact is that EVIL and House of Torture are booked in the the most annoying way possible. Every match that EVIL is in has a formula: he does actual good wrestling, but then at one point or another the match turns into a brawl outside the ring, and then eventually it seems like he's about to lose, but the crowd does not cheer in rejoice, ever, because they always know what comes next; somebody distracts the referee, which gives room for Yujiro Takahashi to use his cane, or Sho to use his wrench, or Ren Narita using his push-up bar, etc. It is sometime reasonable, as it always pisses the crowd off, just as heel work is intended to do, but there is a line between booing because you genuinely hate a heel or booing because the heel-work being done is just so boring and predictable. If you cut out all of the cheating and House of Torture shenanigans, EVIL's in-ring work and promos can be genuinely fun and entertaining, but the way he is booked casts too big of a dark shadow over his work."

[5.0] "EVIL is not a bad wrestler, I enjoy some of his matches, but the way he's booked is absolutely awful, it's really hard to watch a lot of things, but when he has the opportunity to show good things, he does. Not the most skilled guy ever, but pretty solid, and with charisma as well. Unfortunately because of the terrible booking, he became synonym of terrible matches, but if there's a guy on the House of Torture that can do good things, that's EVIL."

[6.0] "At his best he was like a 7 I'd say given how good some of his LIJ G1 stuff was. However, his HoT run has been abysmal which drags his rating down a bit sadly. I have hope that one day we'll see the return of the EVIL we once knew."

[3.0] "The definition of mediocre, the house of torture stuff is terrible along with the majority of his singles matches. He can't sell a long with his matches feeling like a chore to watch. I just don't enjoy or see how anyone can enjoy a match that involves EVIL. Just terrible wreslting."

[4.0] "In 2020 EVIL somehow managed to go from the worst member of the best stable in NJPW to the best member of the worst stable. To be honest I don't know if that's a compliment or not but it's most succinct way I can describe him. Now that Narita is in the group though EVIL doesn't even have that going for him anymore. I dunno, he's a very OK wrestler that Gedo really really likes for some reason and as a result has become way overexposed since the Covid era began. I don't hate him but goddamn I don't really enjoy him much either."

[6.0] "Admittedly, EVIL's IWGP world heavyweight championship wasn't the worst of all time (like it lasted 47 days chill out), and the circumstances of NJPW at the time kinda called on something like that title change, but that still doesn't mean he should be ANY way near that belt again. In recent years, EVIL is just EVIL, and I like the HOT but with their shit-eating antics there should be an obvious ceiling to where they can go, but as that ceiling simply doesn't exist and consequently EVIL is fucking everywhere to the point where I see him in my nightmares, meaning that the fact that he gets 'x-pac heat' is kinda understandable. Personally, in my opinion EVIL is a good heel midcarder but nothing more, and EVIL in LIJ was just ok as well, but he was overshadowed greatly by Naito, SANADA and especially Shingo."

[1.0] "Evil has always been my least favorite member of LIJ, I found him boring in ring and thought his gimmick was dumb. I was interested to see what would happen when he became IWGP Champion but he was still boring, hes not world title material at all. Now he (and HoT) just have pure go away heat for me. Almost every match of his post-heel turn has been borderline unwatchable, and I can probably count the matches of his I didn't hate on one hand. Once you've seen one match of his you've pretty much seen them all."

[5.0] "Despite my bias towards NJPW, this is one of the rare instances that I criticize a New Japan wrestler. EVIL might possibly be one of the worst guys in NJPW roster. He was a solid performer during his time at Los Ingobernables de Japon, had good to great matches there. He had an amazing chemistry with SANADA as a tag team that made them won multiple tag team titles. But ever since he went to Bullet Club and then House of Torture, he became a mediocre wrestler. His reign as the IWGP Heavyweight Champion in 2020 may considered be the worst title reign in NJPW history, simple because I think EVIL doesn't deserve it at the time. It felt rushed and he's obviously not ready to be a main eventer. What's worse is after he lost the title, he never recovered and fell into obscurity. His matches nowadays are mostly interferences from his stablemates and his cheating tactics have been repetitive. Sad to see the state of EVIL these days. A very promising talent that turned to be one of the most unbearable guys in the company. I hope there would be a chance to improve on EVIL. Focus more on working on a match and with less shenanigans, he could thrive and make a match better even as a villain. Just try it, NJPW."

[0.0] "There is no other wrestler in any promotion that I watch that ruins the experience of watching a show more than EVIL. If it were a pure work-rate grade, he'd get a 4.0, since he is bland but competent at performing moves. Wrestling is more than that though. It's about creating entertainment, and telling stories through the medium of a fight. The only story EVIL can tell is "Wrestling is stupid, none of this matters, and you are stupid for investing in it." HoT is in the process of ruining NJPW pro-wrestling by rendering huge chunks of matches meaningless, as nothing before the mass run-in matters. EVIL is the worst member of the faction. He is both pushed as the leader of the faction, and the least interesting and charismatic member of the group. I can't think of a single match I would ever want to see him in, and I can't think of any card that improves from him being booked."

[6.0] "I really liked EVIL when he was in LIJ and still think there is a decent wrestler in there but since joining Bullet Club and forming H.O.T he has been absolutely painful to watch and that is putting it lightly. Nearly every single match is a carbon copy of the last and unfortunately that last one was pretty bad, I do feel he is much better than the booking he has been given the past few years but still not world champion material."

[6.0] "EVIL in Los Ingobernables was passable and he served his role just fine. But then he joined Bullet Club and things started to go bad for the King of Darkness. He flopped as the leader of the Bullet Club and is now the leader of the most hated faction in New Japan: House of Torture. Even though it is starting to get better, EVIL isn't. And if he doesn't improve or maybe even break free from HoT and Bullet Club, then I don't see a successful future for EVIL... (EDIT: Bumping this up by 2 because EVIL has prospered since last year. He's fully set himself as an evil S.O.B who will ruin any moment, and take any belt he pleases even if he didn't win it. His matches can stilll be tiresome, but his character work and expressions have improved tenfold and I am looking forward to what he does next.)"

[6.0] "[6.0] The only reason EVIL gets a 6 is that I think his work before House of Torture was pretty good, but the sample size gets larger and larger each match of him needing help, needing Dick Togo or whoever to bail him. Truly in the running for worst modern IWGP Heavyweight Reign. Every match feels the same and at no point has he felt like he belongs in the main event. Every time he's challenged for the top belt since I worry because I'm afraid of New Japan actually giving him another go round at the top when he's literally as one note as can be now. I'd really like for the old EVIL to come back at this point but it's not happening."

[7.0] "overhated. he sure is a great wrestler in LIJ but under Naito, Shingo, and even Sanada, he was never gonna be that guy. His current role produces absolute comedy of matches and people that wholeheartedly believe Puroseu is somehow serious and sacred. EVIL is providing the variety on the show with all the HoT shenanigans and still giving at least some credibility to the group. Of course, anyone could be in this role, and the matches could be better, but it is a neccesary EVIL i suppose. Great heat magnet that can elevate non-main eventers over in a believable way, and step it up if needed, good hand overall."

[5.0] "The most aggressively find wrestler working today. His run on top was a busted flush but that was more a case of booking than his work. Even outside of his booking, EVIL is not someone I have ever been excited to watch in a single match. Although it is a fools errand talking about Japanese fan bases taste and enjoyment, from crowd reactions alone you get the impression they don't dislike him like they should as heel, they just do not care."

[4.0] "Looks like a star, carries himself like a star, is a great promo and even can pull it off in the ring. What's the problem then? Well his booking during his entire heel run. Stale moveset, boring and slow matches, always the same finishes etc. EDIT: He's now a 4 because he hasn't changed AT ALL. It even got worse."

[10.0] "EVIL is so incredibly cool and entertaining. Right now he provides the variety by being a Japanese style dirty heel. He gives it his all in every performance, and that's one of the things that makes him one of the best. This is something that made him stand out during his young lion days and his excursion to Ring of Honor, and something that put him on the map in 2015 when he joined Naito and formed Los Ingobernables de Japon (because when he first debuted with the King of Darkness gimmick, people considered it's too cheesy for a supposedly straight-laced company like NJPW, and yet he made it work and managed to become one of the top merch sellers). He still does his best now that he's put into a prominent position with his own faction. The guy looks like a million bucks, as he's rather big and bulky and stands out among his peers; he's incredible on the mic, got unmatched charisma and acting skills and an ability to rile up the fans like no one else can, and he's got great in-ring work. All his power moves look really crisp and make it believable that they are actually hurting, and he made his rather simple STO finisher into one of the most memorable and well-protected moves in New Japan. He can also take punishment just as well as he can dish it out, as he's low-key one of the best sellers right now. All in all, EVIL is an incredible talent that proves time and time again that he well deserves his spot in this business, and I can't wait to see more from him in the prime of his career."

[2.0] "Just wanna change my rating and rant about EVIL real quick. Pre-House of Torture EVIL is a super solid 8, tons of fun smash-mouth brawling-type hoss matches. Post-House of Torture EVIL is unquestionably a 0, anyone defending his booking and work quality since 2020 is legitimately insane. EVIL was a great wrestler, but now he's a parody of himself, with or without the bullshit shenanigans. I'm actually quite sad about his downward spiraling career, cause I found him pretty uninteresting until Wrestling Dontaku 2019, when he had that amazing match with Ishii, I finally felt him, I was like, wait, EVIL is great now! Extremely rare that I find a wrestler having the ''It Factor'' mid-career, but it happened on EVIL, then he went on to have a fantastic showing in G1 2019, solidifying him as a great wrestler to me. But then, you know, the nonsensical super mega double champ-champ push turned him into this House of Torture retard we see now. The thing is, people love to bash the booking side of EVIL, blaming it all on Gedo, while it's true that the tone deaf booking of him and House of Torture is seriously alarming, but we should equally bash his deteriorating wrestling skills and match quality. He has done nothing worthwhile since 2020. Any matchup you would classify as a must-watch? Anything worth checking out? No. 98% of EVIL matches are atrocious. Pre-HOT EVIL actually knows how to wrestle, these days he mostly gets out-performed by his opponents, like there's no polite way to say this, but he's genuinely terrible in the ring now, his steep decline has been staggering to watch. Before I wrap my rant up, lets circle back to his booking for my last point. I routinely travel to Japan, attended a decent amount of NJPW shows, Ive seen EVIL wrestle and observed the reactions in person, honestly, people just don't care. They will certainly pop when his opponent wins, but when he wins, usually due to cheap shots or outside interferences, the crowd just dies. Maybe not zero crowd reaction, but nearly zero. Someone like a Jay White gets booed, a negative reaction sure, but at least a reaction. People just don't seem to bother with EVIL, and that's the worst part of it all. A lot of fans think EVIL has go-away heat, but I think people just don't give a shit. No one give a single shit about EVIL and House of Torture, on top of that, nobody buys him as a main event level player, like literally nobody. I have no idea why bookers and management are ignoring all the indications that he isn't suitable as a top star, still tirelessly trying to shove him down our throats, as he just advanced to the semi-finals of G1 and about to challenge SANADA's world title in a few months. The most annoying and frustrating part of EVIL to me, is how easy it is to solve him. You want to make EVIL a top heel that fans will care about and get behind? Make him a monster heel! One who runs through everybody with brute force, not a chicken shit heel who needs his stablemate's assistance to win. That's how you do it. Its so easy! Just do that! Let him wrestle, like the old LIJ days, we literally saw it from 2015-2020, he was great, and we know he can still be great. Just let the man wrestle cleanly for the sake of everyone. But before that happens, all I can say is Rest in Peace Pre-HOT EVIL, 2015-2020. You will be missed."

[8.0] "EVIL is a very good wrestler, mostly a brawler. Was good in Los Ingobernables De Japon but I think he finally found his schtick with House Of Torture. Since the crowd have been able to cheer again, and despite what very delusional people seem to think, his act is over with the crowd and will generally get good reactions. He has a great ability to make the crowd cheer even more for his opponent with his dirty tactics. He's still able to remind fans that he can go and can be a threat sometimes, even without the constant cheating. Right now he brings something different in the New Japan roster and is an effective heel. People saying he has "go away heat" are just coping because they may not like his style or role now, but it clearly works with most japanese crowds."

"An absolute waste of talent. EVIL is now universally hated by puroresu fans, and has been for the past three years, but people forget how good he was before his big heel turn. His matches against Okada and Ibushi in particular were truly great. The turn he did on Naito in 2020 was excellent, but for whatever reason the booking turned on him very quickly and his reign as World Champion ended way too quickly, and he never reached the top of the card, was always playing second fiddle within the Bullet Club, and never felt like he could be a credible main eventer again, especially in the eyes of the fans. Worst thing is, I don't even think his current in-ring style was mandatory to turn him into a heat magnet."

[8.0] "EVIL is indeed one of the most improved worker since last year's G1. Can't really say why, but I always loved him, he was great in the LIJ tags, great against Shibata and Tanahashi, had a good showing in last year's G1 and this year's was a hell of a coming out party for him. His match with Okada is one of my favorite of the tournament and it showed me exactly why I root for him. The future is ironically bright for EVIL"

[3.0] "So he's leading a sub-faction that called the house of torture and it's true considering how painful it is to watch them in action at any time........ Definitely unbearable."

[2.0] "I hate Evil. Hate he's in ring work, hate his gimmick hate his stable. Putting main title on him was a big mistake from NJPW side. Everytime i watch Evil i want to lewer his rating even more. Most boring wrestler in NJPW"
