Murdoch somehow can keep up with Inoki's matwork and his brawling style works well for the in-between spots and the monster gaijin heel work he can do so well. It's nice to see an actual finish in this while most of the big NJPW matches over the past month have been non-finishes. Can't wait for a year from now when the IWGP Heavyweight title will start getting defended like an actual belt. |

The first ten minutes or so was Dick brawling Inoki, working over Inoki's arm and slapping on rest holds.. Inoki made the comeback thanks to 2 enziguris, some punches and stomps but Dick took control with more arm work and rest holds. This middle got pretty boring with extended periods of just rest holds but it picked up after Inoki was busted open and made his second comeback. From there it was a lot of back forth brawling, great Inoki top rope leg drops, some big power moves from both men and some really close near falls that bit the crowd every time. Remove the extended periods of nothing but rest holds and some weird selling from Dick Murdock and this is even higher. Classic match. |

Murdoch did a great job getting hammerlock over as a dangerous hold in the beginning, and when he got back in control, he did a great job working over Inoki's arm and shoulder. But then again, Inoki hit him with a dropkick and he sold it like Zab Judah. Later Inoki got color, made a big comeback, and won. Then dropkicked Murdoch after the bell, and pinned him again. Alright. |

Vor der Schlussphase gab es sehr wenig Wertbares, dazu schwaches Selling von Murdoch. Insgesamt ist das dann ganz okay, aber ich würde davon abraten, dieses Match zu schauen. **½ |

Mit zwei Veteranen der 70er hatte ich schon ein bisschen die Befürchtung ein sehr methodisches aber auch langatmiges Oldschool-Match zu sehen. Ein Oldschoolmatch war es auch aber genial umgesetzt, mit brillianter Psychologie und genug Drama und Action zwischendrin um zu keinem Zeitpunkt Langeweile aufkommen zu lassen. Natürlich war bei zwei Wrestlern wie Inoki und Murdoch auch die Technik sehr schön anzusehen, und man bekommt nicht oft ein Match geboten in dem jemand Inoki auf der Matte in seine Schranken verweist. Für mich ist dieses Match schon fast ein verstecktes Juwel und definitiv mein liebstes Dick Murdoch-Match. Und wenn man sich manche Inoki-Matches aus den 70ern anguckt, wo es ihm sichtlich schwer gefallen ist den alten 60er-Stil abzulegen, ist es kaum zu fassen wieviel unterhaltsamer und besser Inoki in den 80ern geworden ist, und sich innerhalb kürzester Zeit auf den neuen Stil umgestellt hat. |
