618.07.2024Visual Kei5.0I get the hype and the rating. But man..was this boring. 44 minutes for a tournament final is ok. I like long matches. But they repeat sequences multiple times. Especially the Funks. I think Dory was (in comparison) too long in the ring. It just happened not much in this time. And what a dumb finish...Its not my style of Pro-Wrestling seemingly. ***

926.04.2024cjm5505068.0The Real World Tag League Finals have delivered the past two years in All-Japan. This was higher for me until the finish and in fact I feel like I'm still rating it too high because of it. The action throughout is amazing. Some of the best yet in All-Japan but that terrible pattern of the early years of All Japan of not ending the match with a pin or submission is a big disappointment especially at the end of a great match and tournament.

1112.03.2024flightaker3218.0I love the difference in styles between the two Funks here. Terry is all amped up and aggressive here, while Dory is more calm and composed in this match. Jumbo ended up getting his leg worked over the Funks and more specifically Dory down the stretch of the match. Theres also the portion where Terry gets his back worked over for a long period of time by Baba destroying him or getting put in an abdominal stretch or camel clutch. They even got Baba to take a longer extended beating than they had done in any of their other matches here! Terry saves Dory at the end which leads to Dory having to fight a two on one for a bit, that he ends up surviving. The finish being a count out after their previous matches was a bummer, and what they had built up here but this was still a great match.****1/4

2407.07.2022bulO4KA5.0despite the fact that I am not against such a slow type of wrestling, I watched this match with the hope of a quick end. incredibly slow, dull, boring. only at the end of the match there was a bit of dynamics. 2.75.

3126.09.2021ThomasChaos10.0This might be a minority opinion, but this is my favorite of the Funks and Jumbo/Baba tags. This is a brilliantly worked tag match and it feels like every little move over its ~44 minute length pays off at some point. The angles they run during the match add a ton as well. Seeing Jumbo fired up when Terry takes a cheap shot at him was awesome and the anticipation for the two of them to end up in the ring together was built perfectly. The Terry in peril ending that we've seen a few times with the Funks works tremendously as always and adds a ton of drama to the match. This match builds perfectly and by the end I found myself wishing that they could have kept going.
3209.08.2021OraclePuro9.0This match would decide the winner of the 1980 AJPW Real World Tag League. These teams had 45:00 draws in the previous 3 tag leagues, but with Baba & Jumbo coming in a point behind the Funks, that really put the pressure on the natives. Only Baba seemed to feel that urgency early on & was interested in taking things to the next level when he came in. There is a cool spot where Tsuruta is about to execute a move off the top rope onto Dory Funk Jr. and Terry Funk protects his brother Dory, resulting in Terry getting hit instead. Terry's pretty great the whole way through and has some really good exchanges with both Jumbo and Baba, but Dory just kind of floats along and rarely does anything. His expression never changes, even when they run an in-match angle towards the end where Terry sacrifices himself to save Dory and Dory has to fend off both Jumbo and Baba. Terry is selling the motherfucking shit out of this by convulsing on the floor before fighting his way back onto the apron so he can make the hot tag, all fired up like a lunatic shouting for Dory to reach the corner, but as much effort Terry puts in to making it seem like a big deal... you just don't get the same from Dory. Needless to say but the count out finish was super anticlimactic. Nevertheless, Giant baba & Jumbo Tsuruta won the match and the Real World Tag League for the second time. Very good match. (****1/4)

3504.07.2020KinchStalker7.0They went for the epic here, finishing just seventy seconds shy of a time-limit draw. I've actually seen this match labelled as a disappointment compared to some of their 70s confrontations, which makes me interested in reevaluating those, because I think I agree in this case. I'm a fan of all four men here (yes, even Baba, who I've grown quite fond of despite whatever he may lack in verisimilitude), and the work is generally good stuff. I'm not even opposed to them going long; after all, I loved the Robinson/Thornton vs Bockwinkel/Brunzell 45-minute draw from earlier in the tournament, and that was only very slightly clipped. The crowd is a very good one, too. But at least to me, this match didn't feel like it meant all that much. I try to separate my opinions on matches from my opinions on their booking, because I feel like "did the right person go over, and in the right way? " is a different line of inquiry than "was this match good? ", especially in an era where such finishes were a perfectly accepted way of delaying any decisive conclusion. But with all that said, Jumbo brawling with Terry on the outside and getting the win by countout with just over a minute to go was underwhelming. I still liked the match, but I wanted something a little more. Maybe that was just my problem. ***½

3703.04.2020trinidadchainz10.0One of the greatest matches I have ever seen, the atmosphere was electric and my god the noise for every time Jumbo did a move or if Dory pulled out a great reverse was amongst the loudest I have heard a crowd, wasn't just about the crowd though of course, the in ring was solid, nothing extreme but it was good enough to keep me invested entire time despite the long length. Just the best kinda match that I could watch all day. *****
3814.12.2019taabr29.0Awesome tag match here. With the points shaping up the way they did Baba and Jumbo needed to win, any other result allowed the Funks to remain the World Tag League champions. Loved how the match started with mutual respect but more and more into the match the teams got more aggressive. Terry Funk was amazing here, taking some crazy bumps and being the aggressor in the match. This just pissed off Jumbo who got more and more aggressive as the match went on. Jumbo hurt his leg early on and I loved how the more methodical brother Dory kept going back to the injury, meanwhile Terry just wants to slug things out. Even Giant Baba worked his ass off in this match taking some big bumps and doing several moves, he even played face in peril at one point. The ending was great storytelling as Terry sacrificed himself protecting Dory from a top rope move from Jumbo. This left Dory on his own and put him in serious trouble for the first time in the match. But Dory kept stubbornly kicking out of pins until Terry recovered. Great hot tag as Jumbo and Terry just unloaded on each other. The finish was the only sucky part of the match as the brawl between Jumbo and Terry spilled to the floor and then Terry got counted out giving Baba and Jumbo the trophies in a rather anti-climactic fashion. ****1/4

4324.04.2016TrevPuroFan9.0This was an excellent tag match. The storytelling and pacing here were on point. And the selling by Terry and Jumbo were awesome. Once again Jumbo wrestled most of this match for his team, and Terry his brawling antics were great. ****1/4
