[9.0] "The first big win for the foursome of the Hardy Boyz and Edge and Christian. This match put the four of them on the map and they've been at the top ever since. It was really innovative at the time, but the multitude of ladder matches since have upped the ante, especially the TLC ones both teams were a part of...But damn, this still holds up pretty well even after all these years. I loved it."

[10.0] "Legendary match that put both of these teams on the map, this was a completely unique match that would soon become a staple in the WWF. There's a lot of inventive car crash spots throughout, but the way these guys sell the damage put each and every one of those spots over the top. It was absolutely relentless with how it was paced as well as there's pretty much no time to breathe compared to any of the ladder matches that came before. Every time someone climbs the ladder goes for the win it is dramatic because the match extremely dangerous. Whilst they would go on to have even better ladder matches and TLC matches in the future with bigger spots and bigger stakes, this was an absolute blowaway match when it happened. All of them looked like stars when it was over."

[7.0] "Bret introduced it, Shawn and Razor initiated it, and these four innovated it. This match is the direct match you can point to to show the origins of modern day ladder matches. It still holds up as an extraordinary and intense ladder match. However...my feelings on it are a bit divided. Because this match didn't have the amazing psychology and story-telling with pace and pain the way the classic ladder matches before this had, but it also didn't have the awe-inspiring high spots future ones did to try and make up for that. Now, you can also argue that ladder matches shouldn't have gotten more extreme or more dangerous than this, in which case, this might be a great 'stopping' point for you in terms of the every increasing bar. The creativity this match had is undeniable, and it takes the crowds breath away. But I would have either liked to see some more selling and psychology or up the ante on the stunts a bit more. While this match is still excellent and significant, it pales to the triangle ladder match and original two TLCs we'd see within the next year to two years."

I can honestly say with no irony or hyperbole that this match was extremely influential on the many ladder matches (and TLC matches) that followed, not just in WWE but in all promotions. The ending took great skill and should be commended for working!"

But here the ladders aren't really used in a interesting manner and I was not that impressed by the spots. The story and reward for the match is a bit funny in a so bad its good way."

[3.0] "Horrible spotfest that constantly made every spot feel less and less impactful, plus it buried the whole stipulation. They had all these "cool" spots planned beforehand, but the problem for them was that they had to actually implement them into the wrestling match, so as a result we get a huge chaos with no space to breathe. There are so many spots where one of the guys hits the ladder to "sacrifice" himself, but every time he clearly gets worse of it than the receiver, plus they repeated it so many times that it lost any value. No selling of anything, it's barely a contest."
gargoylesmain wrote on 15.01.2024:
[10.0] "Really great match, these guys did some really awesome and brutal spots with the ladders. The over the top leg drop and the "catapult" spot were insane. Lawler's commentary was so repetitive and garbage that it actively detracts from the match, but I'm still giving the match the full 10."

While this honestly is more like a 7 or 8 as a match Ill give it a 9 because of there impact this match had on all these guys career and On the business in general 4/5"

[9.0] "What an awesome match! This became one of the roots of the TLC match as we know it. It served as a really good prelude for what was to come. This had a surprisingly slow pace at the start with a quiet crowd. There were some great spots throughout. The ones that particularly stood out were the leg drop over the ladder onto Christian and the face whacks with the ladder by Jeff onto Matt & Christian. I really enjoyed how the ladders are a huge factor in most of these early ladder matches. To me, this was on the verge of being virtually perfect. Yeah, there are definitely some logical mistakes here such as the why factor. Some of the spots here like Matt doing to moonsault onto the ladder may strike some as why would you do that? or youre hurting yourself more than the other person. At times, it also felt like they were trying to set up spots rather than trying to win. However, it does work better here than a lot of modern ladder matches because it looked like a fight rather than a gymnastics routine or a heavily rehearsed spotfest. There are also some thing that arent directly the fault of those involved. For instance, the dead crowd at the beginning, Lawlers commentary, & whatever the hell happened with Matt when him and Jeff got whipped into the ropes. People may have issues with this as not being as hot or as great as what followed, but those people can shove a ladder up their ass. Overall, awesome match that people should watch to see where the TLC match truly began. 9/10. ****1/2"

[9.0] "All four men held nothing back as they continually upped the ante to deliver one jaw-dropping spot after another. OK, so some fans might be quick to deride this as little more than a spot fest, but this kind of match -at least in the WWF- was groundbreaking at the time and when all the spots were delivered so well, who cares what you call it? Truth be told, I tend to review these shows in bulk, usually going through about three or four different PPVs in a single weekend. That's a lot of wrestling and it's easy to get burned out, but not today. Watching this match was absolutely the most fun I've had watching wrestling in a long, long time."
TSwifty wrote on 06.11.2022:
[4.0] "Very dull match in my opinion. These two teams had far superior ladder matches not long after this. The pace was very slow and the structure just felt off. There was too much 'your-turn-now-my-turn-to-knock-each-other-off-the-ladder' and the setups just weren't very good. A few spots made no sense whatsoever. Disappointing. **"
Derek Joists wrote on 30.07.2022:
[9.0] "Legendarily one of the best ladder matches of all time, and the first tag team one in WWE. It's not quite perfect as, like most ladder matches, a lot of things don't make sense, but they did a good job of keeping the slow climbing to a minimum and making it look like a fight and not just an acrobatics display. The match that firmly put the Hardys on the map as one of the greatest teams of their generation."

[9.0] "This was a spotfest but I thought they paced all of their high spots well enough, sold the damage decently enough for this to work. They didn't have one crazy high spot in this but everyone here took a lot of hard bumps with moves off of the ladder, getting constantly thrown around and into the ladders. They all put their bodies on the line a ton here, as a result was able to get the crowd on their side by the end of the match. Jeff's springboard over a ladder leg drop was easily the best spot of the match. The ending was done nicely. Amazing star making performance from everyone here. Also Lawler's commentary here was horrific.****1/2"

[8.0] "Although they would end up perfecting these kinds of stunt show matches, this clearly laid out the blueprint and got the audience to care about these four. This might be lacking a traditional face/heel dynamic, but they build-up to the big spots well and they keep the selling consistent. The finish was pulled off exceptionally well, given how little room for error they had. Well worth a watch if you can stomach these kinds of daredevil matches and it's probably the best match you're going to find in 1999 WWF."

[9.0] "This was an awesome ladder match and also a significant breakout moment for both teams. It's crazy that now these 4 are considered legends, but back then they were complete unknowns. And out of nowhere, they put out this banger of a performance together, thus starting a feud that would last throughout the height of the Attitude Era. This match was incredible, they just destroyed each other with the ladders and took some harsh bumps, it was a trainwreck but in a great way (this would be an accurate description of all of their matches tbh). ****1/4"

[9.0] "Amazing ladder match here, this is one of the matches that defined the style these were wrestled in from this point up until today. Some of the spots in this are still incredible to this day. This match made stars of both teams: they went in to this getting little in the way of crowd reaction, but had the audience on their feet by the end. Whilst the TLC matches were probably better remembered than this one, this is still a match that deserves a ton of praise."

[10.0] "Absolutely breathtaking. This match goes by a mile a minute (but more like a spot every half a minute) and never lets up. The crowd get super hot by the end because they know they were witnessing something truly special, this match revolutionised what would become of tag-team wrestling for the next couple years and while the Hollys vs NAO was decent, this blows it completely out of the water and onto another shore. Jeff kills himself in this match (as well as Matt in that memorable see-saw spot) just to get over but that doesn't mean E&C don't do their part too. Both teams forget how much they're gonna hurt tomorrow and just commit to 16 minutes of pure adrenaline. What a match, this is just under TLC II for my new favourite tag team spotfest of all time. ****1/2"

That being said, this is still one of the best spotfests out there. Lots of fun, but very little in-ring action or psychology. Watch HBK/Razor for a classic ladder match with psychology. Fun, and good, but not mind-melting. ****."

It had a huge impact for three years and this first Ladder match is great, with huge risks and crazy ideas. Every wrestler in this match is a star, no doubts about that. I can't rate it 5 stars because there are better matches after that, but it's an impressive start. ****1/2"

It's simply 4 young wrestlers giving their best and writing their names in history. Those spots have been repeated over and over in the following years, but no one had seen anything like that in the WWE before this match. It's legendary. And I still enjoy it after all these years, more than most TLC matches that came afterwards."

I am sure that in 1999, it felt incredible, but in 2015, after seeing so many crazy ladder/TLC matches, this one didn't really stand out as anything special. Even though I respect the guys for taking some brutal bumps, I found this one to be a "meh" match. *"
