"What the hell am I, an ardvark? (DX parodies The Nation of Domination)"
Date:
06.07.1998
[DX, who have been feuding with The Nation of Domination, make their way down the ramp and into the ring, but they're dressed as if they were The Nation: Triple H, who is caucasian, wears blackface makeup, with a drawn on raised eyebrow and sidebuurns, and a wig. He is intended to be The Rock. Billy Gunn, who is caucasian, wears blackface makeup and has 'tattoos' on his arm, wearing a hat and smoking a cigar. His impersonation is supposed to be The Godfather.

Road Dogg, who is caucasian, wears blackface make-up, a striped hat and a vest that says 'B-LO', in an attempt to portray D-Lo Brown. X-Pac, who is caucasian, wears blackface makeup, a long black wig and a fat suit with the word Mizark (the 'carny' slang for Mark) on it. He is intended to be Mark Henry. They are joined by comedian Jason Sensation who is wearing an outfit wrapped in yellow caution tape, and a fake nose. He is supposed to represent Owen Hart'.]

Billy Gunn: [as 'The Godfather'] "Pimps up. Ho's down. Westside!"

Triple H: [as 'The Rock'] "You know 'The Crock' just came from the bathroom and woo; you should've smelled what 'The Rock' was cooking.I ain't faking, you should've smelled what 'The Rock' was baking."

Road Dogg: [as 'D-Lo Brown'] "The Rock was baking! Brother was baking!" [Road Dogg lays down and Triple H acts like he is going to give him 'The People's Elbow' before stopping at the last moment.]

Triple H: [as 'The Rock'] "As a matter of fact... When it comes to 'The Crock' and the ladies, when 'The Crock' hits 'rock bottom' he has no choice but to lay the smack down on himself!"

Road Dogg: [as 'D-Lo Brown'] "Did you hear that? The brother smacks himself down."

Jason Sensation: [as 'Owen Hart'] "Well enough is enough and it's time for a change! So what? Nobody listens to me, nobody gives a damn what I think. And what the hell am I doing wearing this ridiculous outfit?! I look like a damn road sign! What the hell am I, a school crossing?! You know I tried to be a tough guy but I just couldn't grow my damn beard in! And you know what? I am not a nugget! I'm a black heart, dammit! A winner, a sole survivor-- WOOOOO! And if anyone can smell what 'The Rock' is cooking, it's me - look how big my damn nose is! What the hell am I, an ardvark? WOOOOO!"

Road Dogg: [as 'D-Lo Brown'] "What does the brother look like? An ardvark?!"

X-Pac: [as 'Mark Henry'] "Hey hey hey 'Rock'. I don't know what you're cooking, smells like shit. But I think I eat some anyway, heheheheheh." [see Note 1]

Triple H: [to X-Pac/'Mark Henry'] "You know something Mark Henry. Mizark Henry. I know you're 'The World's Strongest Man' and 'The Crock' has a hell of a body himself, but there's one thing the people want to know: How do you get your pecs to go all the way around your back like that?"

Road Dogg: [to X-Pac/'Mark Henry'] "What he wants to know is how--"

Triple H: [to Road Dogg/'D-Lo Brown'] "Shut up! [to the camera] Shut your mouth and know your roles, Nation it's real simple, we got two words for ya: Suck it!"
- Note 1: Allegedly this is a reference to a real life incident where an unknown person defecated in Mark Henry's food, which he then consumed. Dave Meltzer recounted this in the 13th July 1998 issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (WON) as follows:

"When they talked about Henry being willing to eat shit, it was actually to make fun of him because a few years back when he was first breaking in and most of the guys resented him because he was signed to a ten-year contract at $250,000 and had an attitude of not wanting to learn to wrestle and also they found out he was being paid by McMahon before the Olympics as well, someone put a real-life turd in his sandwich and he took a bite out of it."

[10.0] "Times have changed. The majority of people speaking about this being blatant racism are looking at it through a modern lens. Today, any darkening of skin to portray a different race is seen as wildly offensive. But back when this segment aired, that was clearly not the case. Blackface existed, but it was mostly still defined as something you'd see from a minstrel show designed to explicitly demean on the basis of race. That said, I don't believe this segment was meant to demean the Nation because of their race. So I think it's unfair to judge it in such a way. This segment was super funny, as the impressions were great. Road Dogg as D-Lo was great, but the standout was Jason Sensation as Owen. "I look like a damn road sign" is an amazing line. It heated up the rivalry between the two top groups of the time."

[10.0] "The 1998 WWE promo video, in which D-Generation X parodies the Nation of Domination group, became a landmark moment in the history of wrestling. This video not only demonstrates the outstanding talent of the DX members, but also highlights their unique style and charisma. The parody of Nation of Domination, with their characteristic gestures and speeches, was executed with intelligence and a sense of humor, which made it memorable. The chemistry between the DX members, especially X-Pac and Triple H, created a dynamic atmosphere full of irony and sarcasm. Their way of ridiculing rivals was not only entertaining, but also added depth to the plot, showing the confrontation of two different philosophies in wrestling. The visual elements of the video, from costumes to set design, perfectly complemented the overall mood. This promo video became not just a joke, but an important element of the cultural context of that time, reflecting the spirit of the 90s. As a result, this moment remains one of the most vivid and beloved among fans, confirming the genius of D-Generation X in creating unforgettable images and plots."

The promo's contents are overshadowed by the presence of such ugly, rampant discrimination but they are still bad enough to stand out on their own terms. All of the DX boys are operating on the laziest register, coasting off of provocation instead of being funny or targeted in their takedowns of the Nation."

X-Pac wearing a darker skin tone isn't as...bad as it seems? Everyone was trying to look a part. It's an iconic part of the attitude era and it was just people having fun."

That being said, outside of Jasons dead-on Owen impersonation, this promo really does just suck. Its just straight up cringe and not funny outside of the whole blackface joke which I personally find amusing in a Holy shit I cant believe they actually did this on live TV kinda way."
Dynamax Dawn wrote on 12.05.2023:

Most wrestling promos have little subtly to them, much less this one. Whats next? Triple Hs people like you promo is comparable to a Spike Lee joint? Think it like this, youre supposed to laugh at them (Tropic) not with them (the promo)."

[5.0] "There are two parts of this promo. One is Jason Sensation who gets a 10 because that was one of the funniest things ever. The other is the rest of the promo who gets a 0. Not because of "racism" or anything, I'm not offended by that. But because the humor is a little bit too juvenile for me. I never really liked any Road Dogg promo and the other guys are really useless here. As for Triple H, he's always been boring on the microphone. Any year, any era, always boring. I was hoping to see Michaels here. He was a duche, but at least he was the BEST duche"

Everyone wants to say The NWO aged badly, look at this shit man. The NWO never did shit like this, The Liver Spot promo was funny, but it was never that offensive."

Mr Bungle wrote on 11.05.2023:
[1.0] "I'll give this a 1 because Jason Sensation's impression of Owen Hart was okay, but this entire segment was cringe comedy that was embarrassing to watch. It probably doesn't help matters that the Kliq bullied Mark Henry in real life, then DX went on TV and made fun of Henry for getting bullied (and they're supposed to be the faces? ) Not to mention the nWo had already done the parody thing with the Four Horsemen a year earlier, so this just came across as a cruder, inferior version of that WCW segment."

Folks today are willing to give this a pass because it's obviously a joke and yes, the segment it's surely played like that. But the whole situation with Mark it's just maddening; racism at its rawest form. Remember what they did, what they hide and what they do; not much have changed over time, just the fact that they don't openly joke about this as it became the quiet part."

[0.0] "The year is 1998. It's summer, so there's no school. I'm watching RAW and we're laughing at the absurdity of Brawl 4 All and then BOOM. This comes on... are they...? Are they wearing...? Isn't that... wrong? An uncomfortable silence falls. The people in the arena, on tv, are laughing and cheering. We wonder if what our parents told us was wrong - maybe it's not offensive to paint your face to pretend to be black...? If they were right then how could it be shown on TV? But it still feels bad. Like there's a line that they shouldn't be crossing. Fortunately Ken Shamrock is on next (one of our favourites) with a suprise appearance from Mabel! He won the most boring KOTR ever and now Shamrock is taking him apart and we forget the segment for the rest of the show. This was 25 years ago. I am no longer a child. This moment for me was an important one, and I remember the discussions with my parents after, where we talked about what we had seen. They were not angry and explained again, and I understood. In a way this promo was a powerful moment that helped solidify what was right and wrong in my mind... In another way though, it's just a trash promo that never should have aired in the first place. Either way it deserves a zero."
