[4.0] "Worst PPV of the year and there have been some stinkers. If I remember 1999, it's much better in terms of quality. This one was just a grand plan by Vince McMahon to keep the title off of Austin and the result was a mediocre PPV."
"The final 5 minutes save this PPV and make it anywhere close to watchable. This has been a slog to watch and at times unwatchable. Advice is to skip to the last match as that is it's only defining feature. The tournament works on a booking side but it makes for a painful watch."
[4.0] "The fact I cannot leave 4.0 without explaining myself is crazy when several people below me have already done so with far more eloquence than I could. How about this Cagematch, 14 matches, only one over 7.0? Several of the earlier round matches have botches in them because the format and overbooking is inherently convoluted! Even at best this show is worth no more than a 6 and even that's pushing it."
[5.0] "Match 1: /10 Match 2: /10 Match 3: /10 Match 4: 4/10 Match 5: 3/10 Match 6: /10 Match 7: 5/10 Match 8: /10 Match 9: 6/10 Match 10: /10 Match 11: 7/10 Match 12: 5/10 Match 13: 4/10 Match 14: 8/10 Overall Total: 5.25/10"
[4.0] "Look, I completely understand why this show is so highly regarded, because the current age demographic of influential content creators grew up watching this show and had their minds blown at the end. Which, fair enough, it was a brilliant idea. Keyword being 'idea'. This show is regarded as Vince Russo's masterpiece, one night where he wrote a perfect show. In reality, he wrote one good idea and bullshitted his way to get there. This show is a mess, there is no other way to put it. Almost every match had a screwy finish or at least some head scratching miscommunication. It really did feel like late WCW, huh, wonder why. One such instance was the Regal/X-Pac match. Finish is a double countout so Austin gets a bye. Simple, easy enough, except it wasnt. For some reason, Vince tells Slaughter to go down and make the match overtime. So Slaughter runs down and makes Finkel announce it, but X-Pacs already gone so Regal has to run after him. What the fuck happened. Apparently X-Pac had a storyline injury? One hand not talking to the other I suppose, but even so, what was the plan if he was still down there? Were they just going to be counted out again? A bizarre, not thought-out few minutes. So much else of this sort of thing too, here's another thing. Bossman tripped Rock allowing Undertaker to take advantage in their match, despite the whole point of the story is to blend the lines and hide that they were in cahoots. Like how do you mess that up, thats the whole story of the show. But at the same time, holy shit I cant blame the guy. He was booked to be in almost every single match. Even after he had apparently driven away, he showed up minutes later. And of course, one of the only times he had to be there, he blows his spot in the Austin match, so they have to have this awkward long sequence eventually leading to THE STOOGES LIGHTLY HITTING AUSTIN WITH THE CHAIR. The stooges eliminated Austin from the tournament. Yikes. The three-way tag is boring, confusing and just flat out terrible. Just the perfect encapsulation of the lack of thought that went into the matches themselves. And honestly, if you dont agree with me on anything else, this match alone knocks this show down from 'Greatest Of All Time' discussions. This show isnt a total loss, the characters are still all there and entertaining as always, and the moments you know will always be iconic, but I think its about time to put away the rose tinted glasses."
[9.0] "Survivor Series '98 is a PPV right out of Vince Russo's and Ed Ferrara's wildest dreams and serves as their magnum opus. A show where matches do not matter individualy. They act as parts of a bigger story. Said story is done to perfection, with its multiple threads being given much attention individualy and fitting well with each other. Arguably, the PPV's greatest element is the deception of the viewer, as it is made seem that McMahon favors Mankind throughout the night, while tries to screw the Rock. Of course, the exact opposite is true and is revealed at the end in grand fashion. An ode to layered storytelling and story structure. MOTN goes to the Main Event (Rock v. Mankind)"
[9.0] "I think this is a great survivor series with the story lines flowing throughout the whole ppv it was a solid ppv with the best match being the main event. This show has no instant classic matches but the tournament is very good and solid I really enjoy the show this is a very underrated ppv"
[9.0] "There were no match of the year candidates on this show, but this event was more about a story unfolding throughout the course of one night. After The Rock reveals himself to be a corporate champion, everything starts to make more sense. Boss Man being his opponent and losing in 3 seconds. Boss Man coming out for his last 2 matches before the finals, tossing the nightstick. Little details like that that start to pile up and connect."
[4.0] "This is a very hard show to rate, because it's so Russo-rific. The story told throughout the night is fantastic, with the through line of The Rock and Mankind, but the individual matches are all, at best, mediocre and at worst garbage. The main event at least is pretty good, and a solid storyline button on the whole thing, but with such a lackluster in-ring product, hard to put it above a 4."
[4.0] "The story told throughout this show is amazing and the finish of the main event was certainly well executed. However, a lot of these matches were absolute filler. Jarrett vs. Snow, Regal vs. X-Pac, Shamrock vs. Goldust? You can literally skip half the show. While the booking is great, the horrible match quality definitely brings this show down for me."
[2.0] "[*] Im genuinely surprised by the generally positive reception this Survivor Series has received. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion and preferences, I personally struggled to find much redeeming about it. The concept of a long night focused on crowning a new champion is promising and creates some tension throughout the show, especially given the strong storytelling and character work WWF was doing with figures like Stone Cold and Vince McMahon. However, the execution is lackluster and feels like a significant misstep in what was otherwise a strong period for creative during the Attitude Era. The shows primary focus is the tournament to crown a new champion, yet most of the matches are either subpar or outright bad, with several disappointing finishes. Apart from the final match, which stands out more due to the low quality of the rest of the show and the shocking ending, there's not much that's particularly memorable. The twists involving the Corporation members, particularly Shane McMahon's abrupt turn against his father after giving Austin a 5-year contract extension on Raw, and then turning on Austin again at the following PPV, are confusing and seem to lack a coherent narrative. What was the purpose of that storyline? Additionally, turning The Rock heel again, after his recent connection with the crowd and his growing popularity, seemed counterintuitive, even though it eventually paid off. Overall, this event feels like a showcase of some of the worst elements of the Attitude Era: the poorly executed midcard and lower card, inconsistent and convoluted storylines, the minimal attention and bad treatment of the women's division and a lack of quality in-ring action, with only a few exceptions."
[8.0] "Right off the bat this show only really has two great matches on it which was Mankind's matches with Austin and The Rock with Rock vs Shamrock being pretty decent so it's not a great show if you're watching on a match by match basis, but the show is great from a storyline perspective and it's consistently entertaining to watch because of watching how Vince McMahon's plans with this tournament ends up playing out. This was probably Vince Russo's finest hour when it came to the swerves because Shane McMahon and The Rock's heel turns was brilliantly executed and it's impossible not to feel sympathy towards the Mankind character as well as even when it appeared the tournament was completely in his favour, it was obvious to everyone he was just being used as a pawn. Vince and Rocky's promos at the end of the night got them a huge amount of heat and The Rock went from being the People's Champion to the Corporate Champion. Great stuff."
[1.0] "One of my least favourite shows ever i'm going to be honest only one match which was ok at best in the main event between mankind and rock everything else was awful there's just so much stuff which is dreadful in the show- the booking to the tournament was bad"
"I rate this event as a 4. The ending to the story of the Vacant championship was underwhelming. The booking of the tournament was terrible. The matches could have been set up much better over the prior month. The early twists and turns, like the double count-out, were somewhat unforeseen and provided some excitement, however, the Final 4 was set up for failure. We got here because of four people: Stone Cold, Undertaker, Kane, and the Rock. However, the booking set up Undertaker vs. Kane in the second round. Screwing Austin in the Semis and Mankind in the Finals provided excitement, but at the end of the day it doesn't seem like this should have been the Rock's championship if they were looking to turn him heel. The previous MNR episode was setting up "The People vs. McMahon" which was a great headline and future storyline. The Rock was given a "You're Fired" match, McMahon tried to intervene through Boss Man handcuffing him, The Rock attacked McMahon and the stooges, then delivered a Rock Bottom and a People's Elbow. Nothing in this sequence resembled a wink at a hidden partnership. There should be some foreshadowing before an enormous heel turn, especially when the Rock had just started to build a fan base. The matches outside of the tournament were largely forgettable. I was really disappointed with this enough that I've considered stopping my re-watch. The storyline was too disjointed and didn't build to a logical conclusion, especially for a match and main PLE with so much at stake. They could have done much better. Even with the big moments, I have to give this a 4. It's not that it's the worst and at least it wasn't boring. But, it made no sense and jeopardized the whole storyline to create something completely different."
[10.0] "Dave meltzer marks might say WTF dont care this ppv is one of my favourites ever, theres something in wrestling called storytelling an great characters this ppv had all of it, the story leading up to this ppv was magic , the rocks double turn was well booked plus this is the rocks breakout ppv into being the top guy, the McMahon and Austin story was at its height , Shane McMahon double turn was funny , no the matches werent great apart from , The rocks matches I actually thought they were decent, one of the best ppvs of the attitude era"
[3.0] "I hate 1998 and I hate Attitude Era. There's literally NO WRESTLING on this show, maybe apart from X-Pac vs Regal. Everything else is just brawling with everything happening outside of the ring and it gets stale really quickly. Boss Man is made to look like the most worthless bodyguard in the world and the only good thing is how they put Foley over as a babyface, but it's immidiately forgotten when Austin stunners him at the end. Pointless and quick matches throughout the whole show that you forget right after they end, but you can be sure that they had some boring brawling in them. Also Sable vs Jacqueline takes place here which is just a disgrace to actually talented women, plus Taker vs Kane has a go away heat with me at this point. WWF Tag Team Title match is also some bollocks - I have no idea how anybody thought that this type of a stipulation wouldn't just cause an unwatchable chaos. The final is obviously a simple brawl too and you just can't help but zone out, since you've seen all of it at least five times on this PPV already. The aftermath is the only redeeming thing, since you get a preview of Rock vs Austin, but goddamnit it was a long ride to get there."
[8.0] "This is Russo's magna Opus and while I not even close to a fan of his I think this show will always be a feather in his cap. Uncle Dave said in his observer newsletter that if you watch wrestling for wrestling matches you won't like this but if you watch it for the sports entertainment style stuff you'd like this. I watch it for both reason and I was thoroughly entertained. The clear match of the night was the main event, but I want to give special mention to the women's match they did not get almost any time but Jacqueline was an awesome talent and made Sable look like a million bucks here, and despite being a huge star Sable was not known for her ring work so that's quite a feat. Honestly despite it going sub 4 minutes that was one of my favorite parts of the show. On the topic of the tournament I thought it was a nice change of pace from the tired formula of 10 person elimination matches that survivor series was most years up until the recent wargames era. I would love to see a deadly games reboot in modern WWE, though to be fair it seems like an uphill battle to even get king of the ring to return, so I'm not holding my breath."
[4.0] "I will give props to this show for doing a night long story that was involved in almost every match and for having one of the smoothest spots ever with Rock intercepting Bossman's nightstick. The problem is that only two matches on the night are even close to good, Austin/Mankind and Rock/Mankind, both being decent 6/10 brawls for me. Every other match on the card was either more of an angle than a match (Like Mankind/Gill or either of Bossman's matches), unremarkable filler (like Sable/Jacqueline and Snow/Jarrett) or just straight bad (Like Taker/Rock or the Tag Title match). A good story is an important element of wrestling, but its not worth it if you barely pay attention to booking good Wrestling alongside it"
[2.0] "I really don't have much good to say about this card, it was not only awful pretty much the entire way, but it was pretty much designed to be that way. The matches themselves were just boring the entire way through just so that it could conserve energy for the match that actually mattered which was the main event. The main event was solid however I did like it, but it really didn't warrant the amount of build it took. Some matches felt like they went on for 3 seconds (or did go on for 3 seconds) and others felt like an eternity of mind-numbingly boring undercard bouts. This was shit, and I can't believe or understand how people rate this even remotely close to what it is rated unless out of nostalgia"
[3.0] "This PPV was a Russo special. Absolutely dreadful booking throughout with any match longer than a few minutes necessitating outside interference and/or weapons. A huge dud during a mega hot period."
[4.0] "Vince Russo's baby right here, and his biggest claim to fame and the ONLY success story of his in wrestling. There is ALOT of crap filler to wade through here, bad finishes, overbooked interference and blown spots, but it picks up near the end and for that I give this show 3 stars out of 10 plus 1 star for the overall story line which brings this sucker up to 4/10. This is one of those shows that once you see how it plays out, there if very little to make you want to sit through the whole thing again."
[3.0] "Two words - Vince Russo. He ruined this show like he did almost everything he touched in the wrestling business, due to his complete failure to grasp that storylines in wrestling exist to set up matches, and that the wrestling is what actually matters. There were only 3 matches out of 14 that went over ten minutes, due to the absurdity of trying to fit the tournament and the dumb McMahon storyline into under 3 hours. And to top it off, no actual Survivor Series match. Awful, everything that was wrong with the Attitiude era."
[6.0] "This is extremely weird to say for a PPV but if I was rating off matches this is probably a 4 but this was peak Russo swerve booking, his magnum opus with ease. Rock/Mankind and Mankind/Austin I can call good with everything else ranging from mediocre to below average. The swerve with Mankind not actually being the corporate champion, but Rock turning out to be at the end of the show was amazing, and help to set up the eventual Rock/Austin feud and Mankind as a sympathetic babyface. Everything that happens post-match on this show was just the chiefs kiss to this event."
[7.0] "If you are looking for great matches then kindly stay away from this show. There are only two matches which you can say were somewhat good or decent which were Austin vs. Mankind and of course the finals between Rock and Mankind. However from a storytelling point of view this was a good show and it was a fun tournament. Also it was a great moment that The Rock won his first WWF Title on the very same event he debuted at. It can be tough sitting through all the matches but if you would have seen the build up or just think of it as a normal tournament you would be entertained."
[8.0] "The peak of Vince Russo's swerveamania booking which he has spent the rest of his career trying to top with abject failure. The matches aside from the main event are either too short or not that good but it all works because the ending pays off. In many ways, it was like Bash at the Beach 1996 in terms of the PPV being more about the story than the wrestling, although not as influential."
[8.0] "If I were to just average out all the matches, this would've probably been closer to a 6. But, there's so much more to this. It comes one year after Bret Hart got screwed at the same PPV, which we get a reference to in the final match as Rocky wins the title over Mankind by putting him in the Sharpshooter, and Mankind never tapping out but the bell being rung anyway. There's a couple decent bouts leading up to it, but it's no surprise that the ones involving Rocky or Mankind don't go all out as they need to be fit for the main event. We do get to see Austin get backstabbed by Shane McMahon though, who turns out to be aligned with Mr. McMahon and costs Austin everything. Austin v Mankind was probably the second best match of the night, after the main event, given how well their styles mesh. The Women's Title was also on the line, but that match was so forgettable I already forgot who won it. This show sets up another couple of fantastic months of programming with the stories that are yet to come."
WWF Survivor Series 1998 - Deadly Game, 8 starke Punkte."
[7.0] "If there is ever an example of a show being more than the sum of it's parts then it's this one. From a match quality perspective this show is one of the worst ones the WWF did in all of 1998, but the storytelling and booking is fantastic and it makes the show an engrossing affair. The twists and turns work like a charm and it's probably one of the best nights the company ever had from a purely storytelling perspective. It's one of those shows you wouldn't want every month, but as a special event to set up storylines going forward it's excellent, and laid the table nicely for all sorts of big storyline events for WrestleMania XV"
[6.0] "This show is indicative of what the Attitude Era was, I think. Great stories, the good kind of unexpected swerves, but overall, pretty naff wrestling. There were 14 matches overall so there were some guaranteed stinkers and we do get those (Taker/Kane, Three Way Title Match, looking at you). There's only really 3 matches I can call good on this show, maybe 4 if you count Regal/X-Pac which was getting good before the DCO finish, but Shamrock/Rock, Austin/Mankind and finally Rock/Mankind all have time to build and provide some quality entertainment. Shamrock/Rock might possibly be a super underrated sub-10 minute match in the grand scheme of things. To cap it off though, that swerve finish is fantastic, setting up the next few months of storylines and making a new all time great heel in the Rock, catapulting him to superstardom while also creating a new sympathetic babyface in Mankind and bringing back the Austin/Rock rivalry to great effect. Overall, good show, great story, but a great deal of the matches aren't essential viewing."
[8.0] "This PPV is an example of how show with horrible wrestling level can be very enjoyable. Out of fourteen matches only three are good but it doesn't matter. The tournament tells great story and is booked very well. Rock vs Mankind is a cool match and the ending is awesome. Unfortunately this year we don't have survivor series elimination matches but I still like this show very much."
[9.0] "If you're doing Meltz star ratings, this show doesn't add up, but if you treat it as some show-long storytelling it's excellent. A huge show for the career of Mick Foley."
[8.0] "I recognize that the wrestling wasn't exactly up to scratch , but this is one of my favourite WWE PPVs ever. There's a lot of stories running through the PPV, and a lot of twists and turns throughout, and just manages to keep it entertaining throughout. If you only care about the wrestling, watch The Rock vs Mankind and Steve Austin vs Mankind, as they're the only good matches on the show. Would give it a 10 if the wrestling is better, but it's one I rewatch often."
So verschwendet man keine Zeit."
[6.0] "An entire tournament in a pay per view usually is less interesting than having only the final round. Short matches and less time for quality, this is King of the Ring stuff and Survivor Series is not the right event. Anyway everything with Steve Austin is excessive to make him seem invincible even when he gets out of the final round. The Rock vs Mankind is a solid match for the title but not one of their best."
[4.0] "The tournament format immediately hamstrings Survivor Series 1998 as far as I'm concerned. It always overexposes dudes and the event pays for it. Still, I can't get enough of my dude Mankind, so I'm on board with his storyline. The empathy is palpable."
[8.0] "Awesome awesome awesome PPV for the sheer amount of genuinely shocking twists and turns, and yet not just swerves for the sake of swerves. This is the true absolute best "Russo booking" show ever, in that his tendancies are reigned in and put to use to create one of the biggest and best trigger pulling moments ever in Rock's heel turn"
W. ), Al Snow vs. Jeff Jarrett 3/10, Austin vs. Bossman 5/10, X-Pac vs. Regal 8/10, Shamrock vs. Goldust 4/10, The Rock vs. Bossman (o. W. ), Undertaker vs. Kane 3/10, Mankind vs. Al Snow 5/10, The Rock vs. Shamrock 7/10, Sable vs. Jacqueline 3/10, Mankind vs. Austin 7/10, The Rock vs. The Undertaker 5/10.
[8.0] "Juhu!
So wars allein vom Wrestling her leider nicht überragend.
