Lucha trios match was fine in ring but had zero crowd heat, WWF didn't promote it literally at all and was just flapping around trying to figure out how to counter WCW kicking their ass. Rumble match was the clear highlight of the show, one of my very favorite Rumbles overall. Austin's performance is amazing but the whole back half of the match is insanely loaded, the final batch is Bret Hart, Undertaker, Vader, Kane-nee-Diesel, The Rock, Terry Funk, Mankind, 2 Cold Scorpio... not all were used to full potential but the raw talent is staggering. Main event was meh, at least the crowd liked Shawn this time instead of despising him like they did at Survivor Series, and at least Sid isn't champion anymore (for a bit at least). |

Das aktive Johnson-Comeback ist in dieser Durchführung ein ziemlicher Flop, ebenso wie das den Undertaker doch recht schwach aussehen lassende Match gegen Vader. Die Latinos sind den zahlreichen Texanern (ansonsten fantastische Halle, gute Atmosphäre, besonders im Main-Event) recht egal, was sich auch auf den Rumble selbst übertragen lässt, welcher vielleicht eher zu den schwächeren seiner Zunft zu zählen ist. Das Rumble-Match kann nur wenig Brisanz vermitteln und auch das Teilnehmerfeld ist wesentlich schwächer besetzt, als in den Jahren zuvor, was auf einen geschrumpften WWF-Kader zu Beginn des Jahre1997 schließen lässt (zu viele Abgänge und die Jungs der AAA, Funk etc. werden hier zum Auffüllen dringend benötigt). Der Mainer ist klar schwächer, als noch bei der Survivor Series '96 und dazu mit knapp 14 Minuten auch recht kurz. Der Royal Rumble 1997 ist somit insgesamt eine relativ wackelige Geschichte, aber aufgrund der Peripherie auf Hochglanzpapier geschrieben. |

The opener goes on and on and is burying the referee at the same time by making him not disqualify Goldust and then Johnson and Faarooq do the same thing! The referee is put in an awkward position once again and the match isn't that good to begin with to make you forget about it. Then Vader and Taker have a slow contest and it couldn't be any different, as both of these guys flourish when they dominate and they couldn't do that at the same time, obviously. The luchadors then enter the ring and have an abomination of a match with the coldest tags in the world, sloppy work and none of the competitors caring about the rules (the guy tagged himself out while being outside of the ring). But then thankfully the Royal Rumble Match happens and that is all about Stone Cold who's phenomenal in this. The moments when he's alone in the ring are magnificent and when Bret enters the ring the atmosphere gets even more intense. Nicely executed finish with Bret coming closer and closer to his eventual heel turn and then we're on to the main event that was also great. It was much better than Shawn vs Sid from Survivor Series, as Sid was allowed to dominate here and he didn't try to do any technical wrestling. Michaels was a great hometown babyface and the big fight feeling was through the roof with the crowd getting louder and louder every minute. Shawn gets his title back, which was the only right call in this environment. All in all it was basically a PPV of two halves. |

There were two matches which were extremely okay, those being Vader vs Taker and HBK vs Sid. The real attraction here though is the Rumble Match itself. The pre Austin Stages of the Rumble aren't much to write home about, but it really picks up once he gets there. The final few is once of the best in Rumble history, and the match is a definite recommend. As for the show as a whole... eh. Maybe give it a watch if you're bored or if you're super interested in 1997 WWF like I was when I threw this on. |

Johnson hat danach ein fast deckungsgleiches Match im Vergleich zum Royal Rumble im Jahr zuvor, bevor es mit Undertaker gegen Vader ein Match gibt, was nicht über die gesamte Zeit so abliefert, wie man sich das gewünscht hätte aber doch immer noch solide ist. Das Six Man der Lucha Wrestler fand ich dann anständig, gut platziert und gerade für die damalige Zeit war das mal was Anderes. Mal was Anderes war auch der Rumble im Vergleich zu den beiden Jahren davor weil er eine umfassendere Story und weniger Leerlauf hatte und insgesamt wirklich mehr als anständig war. Im ME konnte Michaels aus Sid zumindest ein solides Match rausholen, was dann natürlich auch stimmungsvoll endete. Insgesamt war das eine wie ich finde durchaus unterhaltsame und anständige Show, welche 6 Punkte verdient. |

Es ist mehr Feuer drin, mehr Heat, die Charaktere werden kantiger und es wird wilder. Dieser Weg wird auch hier fortgesetzt. Opener wwr ganz nett, in der Mitte gibt es mal einen kleinen Hänger aber sonst Gent ordentlich. Farrow vs. Ahmed mochte ich leider gar nicht. Ahmed war hier irgendwie gar nicht auf der Höhe und wirkte so als wäre er nicht richtig bei der Sache. Schwerfällig und unsauber fand ich ihn hier. Match daher auch schwach. Vader vs. Undertaker hat einen überraschenden Sieger und hat ein paar ganz coole Schlagabtausche. Das Match der Mexikaner ist fast unmöglich zu bewerten. So wie es hier war, fand ich es ziemlich schlecht, unsauber, kein Matchfluss aber leider auch keinerlei Reaktionen der Fans, da sich keiner dafür interessiert. Wie auch, wenn man die Wrestler hier einfach so reinwirft? Totaler Fremdkörper und es gab halt ein paar Moves. Das Royal Rumble Match war ziemlich gut gebooked und hat mir echt gefallen. Stone Cold wurde sehr stark dargestellt, lange im Ring, viele Eliminierungen und letztlich sogar der Sieg und seine Präsenz zieht sich wie ein roter Faden durch das Match. Zudem laufen viele kleinere Fehden zusammen, was gut war, obwohl es am Anfang schon an Starpower mangelt. Der Main Event ist erneut knackig und ansehnlich, fand ich in der Form schon in Ordnung. Sid wird wieder gezwungen mehr zu zeigen, was hier sogar ganz gut ankommt. Bei dem Match wachen auch endlich mal die Fans auf und dass Michaels dann die Kamera einsetzt, passt gut in die Story. |

HBK vs. Sid in the main event was OK action but told a good story. The Rumble itself was a bit odd in its lineup and a bit overloaded with AAA guys at the expense of the WWF roster (with the six-man tag on the undercard, maybe at most two AAA guys in the Rumble itself would be more than sufficient), and dragged in places, but overall was good at telling the story of Austin overcoming the odds from his early entry to winning, albeit in disputed circumstances after his blind elimination by Bret, which would help set up Austin's career-defining moment in his match with Bret at WM13. Overall, a good show for storytelling even if the actual action was a bit average. |

Interessant auch dass der Einsatz der Ringtreppe nicht mit DQ geahndet wird. Das Match ist für mich dann sehr solide und somit schon das beste des Events. Bei Faaroog gegen Ahmed Johnson hat mich dann weiterhin irritiert, dass auch der Einsatz von einem Gürtel und Stuhl keine DQ nach sich zieht, wobei die DQ dann erfolgt, als die NOD den Ring stürmt, Johnson aber nicht erfolgreich attackiert... das Match war wirklich nicht gut. Vader und Undertaker machen es etwas besser, auch wenn das hier eher durchschnittlich war. Das 6 Men Match war sicher nicht schlecht, aber selbst die talentierteren Heavy Metal und Hector Garza waren nicht frei von Botches und Perro Aguayo gehörte in dem Zustand in keinen Ring mehr. Das Rumble Match lebte fast nur von der Story um Austin, der sich auf dem Weg nach ganz oben befand und mit Abstrichen auch von dem Duell mit Bret Hart. Dazu noch eine Hand kleiner Stories wie Ahmed Johnson vs NOD oder der Eliminierung des British Bulldogs durch Owen Hart, ansonsten gab es aber viel Leerlauf, wenig potentielle Sieger und auch keine spannende Schlussphase - eines der schwächeren Rumble-Matches. Sid vs HBK war ordentlich und bot eine einfache Matchstory in welcher Sid Michaels lange durch Power-Moves dominieren konnte, Michaels letztlich aber klüger agierte und so - getragen von seiner Home-Crowd - seinen Titel zurückholen konnte. Insgesamt eine mittelmäßige Show. |

Die 60. 000 Fans, von denen wahrscheinlich nicht einmal die Hälfte bezahlt hatten, sahen im Großen und Ganzen keine katastrophale Veranstaltung, aber letztendlich ein Event, dass bis auf den Rumble nicht viel zu bieten hatte. Der Opener war in Ordnung, aber mit 17 Minuten viel zu lang und von beiden ziemlich faul und kreativlos geworkt. Johnson vs. Faarooq war auf einem noch schlechteren Niveau, bei dem einzig und allein das Selling von Johnson etwas zu gefallen wusste. Vader vs. The Undertaker war ebenfalls eine Enttäuschung, wobei Taker zur damaligen Zeit weit von einem guten Worker entfernt war. Das AAA Match war nicht schlecht litt aber extrem unter dem abwesenden Publikum. Der Rumble war das einzige Match an diesem Abend, das ich überdurchschnittlich bezeichnen würde und das lag vor allem am großartigen und schockierenden Finish. Der Main Event war für mich persönlich die größte Enttäuschung nach dem ganzen Build Up. Da hat so gut wie gar nichts funktioniert und das Finish war auch nicht zufriedenstellend. Insgesamt gab es viel zu viele kontroverse Finishes und man hatte nach diesem Rumble einfach das Gefühl nichts gesehen zu haben. So bleibt es am Ende eher wegen den 60. 000 Zuschauern in Erinnerung und nicht wegen dem, was gezeigt wurde. |

Ahmed Johnson vs Faarooq sorry brauch ich nicht, Vader vs Undertaker hatte eine Merkwürdige Wendung, was hatte plötzlich Paul Bearer dort zu suchen? Die Mexikaner waren nice, aber auch nicht wirklich weiter wichtig. WCW hatte damals zum selben Zeitpunkt mehr zu bieten. Der Royal Rumble an ich war dann auch wieder ganz nett(Ich Liebe diese Matchart). Was mir beim Network auffällt, die Musik der Godwinns ist nie die von Hillbilly Jim(Don´t mess with a Country Boy). Sure, the Stone Cold character was interesting, and the feud with Bret Hart was about to kick into high gear... but it was still a Rumble, and aside from Austin it wasn't great. Also, there were exactly zero highlights outside of the Rumble match, and that's a shame. Watch the Rumble itself if you want to see the evolution of Stone Cold; otherwise, skip this show. |

The Royal Rumble match of 1997 was one of the less interesting, too much focus on Stone Cold and Bret Hart, really a few superstars had time to shine. HHH vs Goldust was not a bad match. Taker vs Vader wasn't good as I expected. Just a really standard event, not at the level of others Royal Rumble. |

Johnson schaffte es nach seinem Comeback noch schlechter als vorher zu sein. (1*) 3. Vader gegen den Undertaker war ebenfalls nicht gut. Der Sieg Vaders geht in Ordnung, nur führte dieser angedeutete Push mit Siegen über Hart und dem Taker ins nichts. (2*) 4. Das Six Man TTM war leider nichts für Jedermann. Obwohl man hier in Texas war, konnten die Beteiligten absolut null Reaktionen bei der Crowd ziehen. ( 1 3/4*) 5. Das RR Match ist im Mittelmaß der Rumbles anzusiedeln. Ausserdem frage ich mich, wenn zu dieser Zeit Hart/Michaels 2 für WM13 plante, warum hier Austin gewann. Die Austin Story mit Konfrontation mit seinem Nemesis Hart ist auch das Highlight dieses Rumbles. Damals habe ich mich über den Sieg Austins total aufgeregt. (3*) 6. | 100 | 15.06.2015 | Follow the Buzzards | 6.0 | Der Opener war etwas schwächer als bei WM. Trotzdem ein solides Match. Johnson/Faarooq war wie erwartet auch kein großes Highlight. Kein berauschendes Match und dann auch noch ein DQ Finish. Vader und der Undertaker haben mich enttäuscht. Das Match war nicht schlecht, aber komplett ohne große Highlights. Das Six Man Tag Team Match war total unnötig. Die Crowd scheint auch irgendwie eingeschlafen zu sein. Das Royal Rumble Match war solide, mehr aber auch nicht. Ganz klar stehen hier Hart und Austin im Vordergrund, der Rest ist nichts Besonders. Der ME wurde von Michaels und der Crowd gerettet. Mit der Länge war das Match sogar ganz ansehnlich. |
