Dazu ließ sich die World Wrestling Federation natürlich nicht lumpen und präsentierte dem europäischen Publikum eine Matchcard ohne roten Faden, meisterhaft eingefädelt. Martel vs. Michaels, der World Heavyweight Titelkampf und Hart vs. Smith im Main Event dürften alleinig einen solchen besitzen - und waren damit auch mit ganz oben in der Rating-Nahrungskette an diesem angehenden Abend. Martel vs. Michaels ging schlussendlich aber eher mit dem Opening Tag Match Hand-in-Hand, **1/2 je. Hat man in beiden Fällen angenehm anschauen können; im Eröffnungskampf zwar ein bisschen rough von Zeit zu Zeit, so aber brachte man das Publikum zum offiziellen Start in Fahrt, das Match um Sensational Sherri's Gunst gefiel ringerisch, zugleich aber zu kurz und stattdessen um den folgenden - mir persönlich zu langgezogenen - Angle aufgebaut. Dagegen hielten sich bspw. Nailz vs. Virgil und Kamala vs. The Undertaker nicht so gut, DUD je. Zwei Time Filler ohne jeden Grund, wrestlerisch in beiden Fällen nicht ansprechend und kaum interessant zu verfolgen. Im Singsang dazwischen gelegen sind Natural Disasters vs. Beverly Brothers und Crush vs. Repo Man, **3/4 bzw. 1/2* im Fall vom Einzelkampf. Beau & Blake Beverly mit ihrem wohl besten Match in der Federation so far, Natural Disasters mit einem ihrer gewohnt soliden Titelkämpfe in diesem Jahr, Crush fertigte Repo Man in einem kurzen Match ab, konträr zu Virgil's TKO-Niederlage bspw. jedoch ansprechend. Insgesamt hielt sich der SummerSlam qualitativ bis dahin bedeckt, Randy Savage's World Heavyweight Titelverteidigung und Davey Boy Smith's Titelgewinn sollten jene Stellschrauben allerdings adjustieren. Nach Hulk Hogan scheint der Ultimate Warrior im amtierenden World Champion seinen zweiten Tanzpartner gefunden zu haben, ein anständiger und mit Zeit sich zuspitzender Titelkampf in der farbenfrohen Welt der World Wrestling Federation, Davey Boy Smith hat dazu nicht lang suchen müssen, vor heimischem Publikum haben sich jene 25 Minuten gegen seinen Schwager Bret Hart zeitlos angefühlt und den diesjährigen SummerSlam versöhnlich enden lassen, ***1/4 bzw. ***3/4 bei ansteigender Tendenz im Fall vom Main Event. |

Many of the booked finish decisions throughout the night are even bad by Golden Era standards. I think a lot of people primarily love this event because it has the spectacle feeling of a huge WrestleMania, which was not yet common of the SummerSlams during the Golden Era, and I can understand that. Quite frankly, the statistical details of this card are just bizarre. In my view, there are exactly two especially noteworthy matches on this card by qualification of both carrying stakes and providing good, well-executed wrestling entertainment value, but BOTH are face vs. face matches. I think it is a big storytelling no-no to fall back on more than a "once in awhile" use of the face vs face showcase match. Even weirder, believe it or not, only one heel goes over during this entire show, and it is literally one of the worst matches in WWF history, with Nailz very slowly powersquashing Virgil with a series of what feels like 20 (very awkwardly and stiffly delivered) choke holds in a row while maintaining the expression of a baby with a loaded diaper throughout. The Undertaker, at possibly the height of his character mystique and popularity here in the early to mid 90's, is once again handed a terrible squash match booking versus an opponent with poor ring skills that has no idea how to help Taker translate his incredible raw athletic talent into a compelling match. We get a hearse intro for Taker at least, which is super badass. The Savage/Warrior match is good, but nowhere near as good as their classic retirement match at WM7. What really saves this whole show from being subpar is the incredible main event match for the IC belt. Bulldog/Hart is a masterpiece of storytelling, atmosphere and ring ability: pretty clearly the match of the night here, and good on WWF for actually letting Bulldog go over in England! It's amazing that these two were able to pull off such a classic, considering what has been reported about the Bulldog's state entering this match. I'm still going to call the match a total 5* banger, but my one big problem with this match is one specific mannerism of the crowd. I'm not taking off points for this, but man do I need to vent for a moment... While I appreciate the loudness of the British crowd, I absolutely abhor the literally constant air horn chant more than words can explain. A few times per match? Sure, that would be fine. Endlessly, though? Get out of here.. Terrible! Just because WWF did the UK a favor and stopped there for a few big 1992 shows doesn't mean wrestling needs to take on the most obnoxious aspects of football culture. Maybe just cheer loudly instead of trying to make everything about yourselves with the least creative chant of all time over and over and over and over and over and over and over. Give Bret all the credit in the world for buckling down to guide this masterpiece Intercontinental Title match and honestly Bulldog, as well, for somehow overcoming his poor decisions to equal Bret's effort. |

Bulldog vs. Hart is well known as a classic, but Savage and Warrior is an underrated gem as well. Some fans may disagree, but I don't think there's a bad match on the card, and the variety on display helps to make the show a breeze to watch (and that's despite two matches closing in on the half hour mark). It's a colourful show with a lot of personality, and the terrific Wembley atmosphere makes the night feel special in a way that it otherwise wouldn't have. If I had to summarise the show in one word, it'd simply be 'fun', and the lively crowd is a big part of that. At the time this show aired it stood out as easily one of the best PPVs in promotion history, and while I wouldn't consider that to be the case anymore in 2024, it's still a landmark event that is well worth watching for anybody who appreciates the old school WWF style of wrestling, and for my money the main event post-match is still one of the best, most memorable endings to any PPV ever. |

I just can't believe them dominating onver Earthquake and Typhoon for so long (4/10) Crush/Repo Man is filler at least better than the other squas (3/10) Savage/Warrior is my MOTN the ending is very overbooked, but I enjoyed it. Savage was on fire the whole match, told a great story and got Warrior to look great once again. A notch below their Mania match but very close (9/10) Undertaker/Kamala is another filler match a bit better than the previous two thanks to Taker's persence, but not by much specially with the DQ (3/10) Bret/Bulldog is a very good technical match with a very hot crowd but I never got hooked by it enough to call it a banger for some reason. Some portions in the middle were a bit slow but of course the best parts are very good as you would expect. Didn't like it as much as I though I would but still think its very good (8/10) |

Maybe you can get some enjoyment out of the WWF title match. Maybe you think the Undertaker's entrance and character work add a lot. Any or all of these can be true, but at the end of the day, I think we can all agree that every other match on this card besides the main event was alright at best. Not only were all the matches pretty poor, but there was so much overbooking and filler matches on this card. And I personally think the main event is insanely overrated. I'd dare anyone who loves this show to re-watch it with your TV muted, and see if you still think it holds up. Now, I'm not trying to say that the crowd should bare no impact on a show. Of course a crowd can feed a show or help kill it. But I also think it's very important to not let the crowd by itself fuel your emotion. The best crowd in the world can't make a bad match good. They can only try and help hide it. And the absolutely raucous crowd is far and away the best thing about this card. But I can't give this show a good rating just because the crowd was amazing when the entire thing had close to no substance. This show is an important show, and I think it proves then and now that more PPVs (or PLE's now) need to be held in the U.K. because of how passionate the fans are both then and still now. But important and good aren't synonymous. And for me, this event was okay at the very best. Certainly not good. |

See, the LOD was growing stale, so Vince brought in their old manager Paul Ellering to freshen up their act. Now, Ellering? s old character was a power-lifting badass so naturally Vince brought him in as a wacky ventriloquist with a dummy named Rocco. Rocco was no Socko. No one was interested here, neither the wrestlers nor the fans. *. Nailz vs. Virgil. Nailz is the marginally talented wrestler Vince stole away from the AWA and turned into a natural enemy for the Big Boss Man. Despite Nailz insistence that he was going to kill the Boss Man on his release from prison, he was paroled anyway. Thankfully, he limited his attempts at revenge to in-ring exploits that we can see on our wrestling show and not a more effective backjump in the parking. Nailz was horrible. About this, there can be no dispute. 0 stars. Shawn Michaels vs. Rick Martel. The stipulation was put in place by Sherri because she was torn between the two pretty boys. Shawn cost Martel the Intercontinental Title to set this up, even though both guys are heels. Not what you? d call a great wrestling match, but all the antics were highly entertaining. **3/4. The Natural Disasters vs. The Beverly Brothers. The Disasters were pretty woeful babyfaces because of their size, and this gimmick did the Beverlys no favors. *. Crush vs. Repo Man. DEMOLITION EXPLODES! Repo Man is Barry Darsow, formerly Smash II in Demolition. Crush was? well, Crush. I? m not sure if we were supposed to be fooled by the frosted hair, but Crush is pretty clearly Demolition? s Crush. Crush looked much better in his feud with Shawn Michaels. 1/2*. Randy Savage vs. The Ultimate Warrior. Both guys are babyfaces, but they don? t trust each other. As with their previous classic, this one is remembered more for the storytelling and sideline antics than for the match itself. It? s not quite on that level, but it? s a worthy successor, and you should try to see it at least once. ***3/4. The Undertaker vs. Kamala. The Undertaker? s cache grew when he turned babyface, but it was immediately squelched by the longest series of crappy feuds anyone has ever seen. From 1992-96 it was nothing but Taker vs. a big slug, usually involving the mystical powers of the urn. 1/2*. Bret Hart vs. The British Bulldog. Just in case being The British Bulldog in London was not enough to get fans on his side, they have Lennox Lewis come with him. I? m not sure what else to say about this match. It? s one of the top three Intercontinental Title matches of all time, and probably the best straight-up wrestling match for that title. A near-perfect match that showed both guys at their peaks. Probably the best non-gimmick match ever for the IC Title, and one of the best matches in WWE history period. *****. Like its predecessor, this one offers a little bit of everything for everyone. This show had peaks and valleys, but it has a classic in the main event and a good world title match. |

Watching it on WWE Network I loved the British crowd , the British culture around it and the atmosphere itself. The Show itself, probably it should be seen with the standard of the time, but, main events apart, it was not so great. I loved the match beetween MachoMan and UItimate Warrior, the chemistry that this two icons had was unbeliavable and probably Savage was the one that mixed better with Warrior. Great, not great as their WM VII encounter but overall really good exept for the ending, but I think it was again part of how the business worked at the time. The Main Event is great, I can't consider it great as many consider it because I don't really like that much Bret Hart, That match is really great but when I hear someone considering it one of the greatest match of all times I am in disagree. Bulldog wasn't in shape, there was some very obvious botches and Bret recalled in his DVD back in 2006 that Bulldog forgot the Whole script and Bret carried the Whole match (he consider it his best match mostly because of this factor). Great show, unique in his genre but not one of the greatest WWE shows ever. |

Nailz gegen Virgil ist dann ein reines Storymatch, welches im Kontext der Rivalität vom Bossman und Nails zu betrachten ist. Ähnlich ist auch Martel gegen Michaels zu charakterisieren, welches im Zeichen dieser Liebesdreieckgeschichte zu sehen ist, womit sich auch das Finish erklären lässt. Das Tag Title Match danach ist dann wieder etwas mehr wrestlerisch, ohne allerdings etwas besonderes zu sein. Das World Heavyweight Title Match hat eine recht einfache Story von Agilität vs. Kraft verbunden mit dem Einfluss, den die Story um Hennig und Flair auf dieses Match haben. Insgesamt ist es aber ein mehr als anständiges, unterhaltsames Match. Undertaker gegen Kamala ist dann für mich das schwächste Match des Abends, zum Runterkommen aber gar nicht so schlecht platziert. Dann folgt nämlich das ME und für mich auch das klare MOTN. Hart beginnt sehr technisch fundiert, entschlossen und dominant und setzt sogar den Signature Move seines Gegners gegen ihn ein. British Bulldog ist aber ein toller Underdog Face ( der auch klasse sellt übrigens) der am Ende unter dem Jubel der Fans den Sieg davon trägt. Das ist wirklich ein richtig guter Feel Good Moment zum Ende der Show. Allerdings muss man halt auch sagen, dass das ME ziemlich herausragt bei dieser Show. Man hat mit dem WWF Title Match noch ein erwähnenswertes Match und auch kein echtes Lowlight ( obwohl das Co ME für mich echt nicht so dolle ist aber wie gesagt gerade auf der Position keine Katastrophe), aber die Qualitätsdichte ist ansonsten einfach nicht da, um das Event wirklich gut zu nennen in meinen Augen, weswegen ich die Show mehr als anständig fand und somit 7 Punkte für angemessen halte. |

Die Undercard ist schwach. Michaels gegen Martel ist da noch mit das beste, trotz dummer Stipulation und bescheidenen Aftermath. Das World Title Match ist mir irgendwie zu langsam geführt und auch die Eingriffe von Flair und Mr. Perfect nerven. Der Main Event ist sehr gut mit sauberem Wrestling, guten Emotionen und einem schönen Moment am Ende, der die Crowd im Wembley zum Ausrasten bringt. Generell waren die Zuschauer an diesem Abend unfassbar hot und selbst in den kleineren Matches voll drin, was die Show auf jeden Fall nicht schlechter macht. Dennoch reicht das am Ende nicht für mehr als eine durchschnittliche Bewertung. |

| 78 | 05.10.2019 | BJey | 5.0 | Ein an sich tolles Event im Wembley Stadion, das viel vom Publikum lebt. Leider ist das In-Ring-Produkt eher durchwachsen. LoD/Money Inc. gefällt mir als Opener sehr gut, 2 klasse Tag Teams, die ein zwar klassisches Programm im Ring zeigen, aber zumindest für LoD ist das mal was anderes (***). Nailz/Virgil lässt nicht viel erwarten, aber das hält es dann immerhin, es ist kurz gehalten und kann sich dadurch noch retten, halt ein verzögerter Squash, der Nailz aufbauen soll (*1/2). Martel/Michaels ist eher verwirrend und mit dämlicher Stipulation, zwar ist das was die beiden im Ring zeigen ziemlich gut, aber alles drumherum macht das Match kaputt, vom Finish und anschließenden Dingen mal ganz zu schweigen (**1/4). Natural Disasters/Beverlys, was soll man dazu sagen, die beiden Blondschöpfe versuchen ihr möglichstes , aber das halbe Match einen liegenden oder knieenden Typhoon zu betrachten ist wahrlich nicht gerade unterhaltsam, wenn man ihn mal aus der Rechnung streicht, kann man sich das Ganze zumindest angucken (*3/4). Crush/Repo ist einfach schlecht, da hilft auch die Demolition-Nostalgie nicht (*). Warrior/Savage hat eine Story, die aber auch erstmal eher verwirrt, Warrior macht das Match qualitativ auch nicht gerade besser, aber trotzdem schafft man es, hier wenigstens Spannung und Interesse zu erzeugen (***). Undertaker/Kamala ist halt ein typisches nostalgisches Taker-Match in seinem Zombie-Gimmick, Geschmackssache, für mich in Ordnung, aber mehr auch nicht (**). Bulldog/Hart für mich ein gutes Match, aber keinesfalls besonders hochwertig, s. Matchguide (***1/2). Damit haben wir 3 gute Matches, der Rest eher Durchschnitt oder weniger, alles in allem 5 Punkte. |

| 80 | 16.04.2019 | TylerWhite | 8.0 | Einer der besten Summerslams bis heute und eine sehr tolle Atmosphäre hat dieser Sumerslam in England vor einer riesen Crowd. Der Opener ist solide zwischen den Road Warriors und Money Inc. sicherlich zwei der besten Tag Teams überhaupt und der Entrance der Road Warriors ist der most badass Entrance ever. Perfekt gewählt als Opener. Nailz vs Virgil war halt was es war, aber schlecht und Michaels vs Rick Martel war leider auch etwas enttäuschend und hatte ein lames Finish. Natural Disasters vs Beverly Brothers war okay, aber das schwächere Tag Team Match am Abend, dennoch die richtigen Sieger, die auch over waren. Crush vs Repo Man war schlecht. Randy Savage vs Ultimate Warrior um den WWF Titel war sehr gut, zwar nicht so gut wie ihr Mania Match aber dennoch sehr stark und dadurch, dass Savage hier nun auch Face ist, fühlt es sich doch nochmal frisch an und hat eine schöne Dynamik. Am Ende verteidigt Savage auch, zwar durch Count Out, was lame war, doch dennoch der richtige Sieger. Undertaker vs Kamala war mehr ein Segment als ein Match und hatte ein billiges DQ Finish. Dennoch steht der Undetaker am Ende stark oben und wird krass dargestellt. Bret Hart vs British Bulldog im Main Event war das MOTN und es ist so toll, dass dieses Match um den IC Title der Main Event war, was den Titel enorm aufgewertet hat. Beide waren rising Stars und natürlich einen gemeinsamen Hintergrund. Es ist auch so schön den British Bulldog in seinem Heimatland im Main Event zu sehen und dann auch noch gegen Bret Hart, mit dem er ein hervorragendes Match haben kann. Hart hatte die beste Chemie und damit die besten Matches immer mit seinen engsten Verwandten und Freunden und so ist auch dieses Match sehr stark. Am Ende gewinnt der British Bulldog tatsächlich dieses Match und gewinnt den IC Titel, was vielleicht der größte Moment seiner Karriere war. |

Bret/Bulldog is a classic as advertised, but I actually didn't care much for the overlong, convoluted Warrior/Savage match. I thought Michaels/Martel was an absolute blast though, incredibly fun and more than a little funny. God bless Sherri, the woman was amazing. Nothing else stood out much either way. |

Michaels vs Martel isn't a great wrestling match but it has interesting concept of heel vs heel. Pretty entertaining for me. Also we have some forgettable squashes or just bad matches. But it doesn't matter because double main event is awesome. Savage vs Warrior is of course worse than at WrestleMania VII but it is a great match. WWF didn't want Warrior to lose. So if we anyway don't have clean win from Savage the ending is perfect. Howewer the best match of the night is unquestionobly Hart vs Bulldog. It is great that this match ends the show because it's just fantastic. Unbeliaveble psychology and story at the ring. Awesome triumph for Bulldog in his home country. Five stars in my opinion. |

Shawn Michaels vs Ric Martel is good but it's all based on Sheri's story. Randy Savage vs The Ultimate Warrior isn't the perfect rematch, the wrestlers were tired but it's enjoyable. The main event is true strongest point of Summerslam. |

Zudem haben die meisten Matches auch begeistert. Muss sagen hab mich bis auf das Nailz vs. Virgil und Kamala vs. Taker Match sehr gut unterhalten gefühlt. Der Main Event zwischen Bret Hart und Bulldog war dann natürlich überdurchschnittlich gut. Die Crowd war durchgehend auf der Seite von Bulldog. Beide haben ein tolles Match geliefert und es gab am Ende den richtigen Sieger, in diesem Stadion. Einfach Herrlich! |

You'd probably be safe to skip the other matches and just watch Bulldog/Bret, but you'd be missing out on some overall great atmosphere. I'd probably recommend watching this event, even if I don't think, overall, that it is particularly great. |

Nailz vs Virgil war Schrott. Zwei schlechte Wrestler worken ein mieses Match. Wenigstens war es kurz. Martel und Michaels waren dann eigentlich auf dem Weg ein schönes Midcard-Match zu zeigen, aber aufgrund der Storyline mit Sherri ist das Finish dann nicht ganz so dolle, aber immerhin irgendwie unterhaltsam. Wesentlich unterhaltsamer als gedacht war das Tag Team Titel-Match. Bei der Besetzung war Schlimmes zu erwarten, aber man wurde durch ein durchaus ansehnliches und irgendwie auch ausgeglicherneres Match als erwartet überrascht. Mit Crush und Repo Man treffen danach zwei alte Demolition Kollegen aufeinander. Allerdings bleibt auch hier null hängen. Beim WWF Titel Match brennt zum ersten Mal an diesem Abend das Wembley Stadion. Die Stimmung ist groß und sowohl der Macho Man als auch der Warrior haben ihre Working Boots an. Das Match ist wirklich gut bis zum Eingrif von Flair und Mr. Perfect. Auch danach ist es bis zu dem dummen Count Out-Finish noch gelungen, aber das Finish zieht das Match echt ein Stück runter und wird diesem großen Kampf in keinster Weise gerecht. Undertaker vs Kamala war das Match zum runterkommen und das hat das Match auch geschafft. Wer gutes Wrestling sehen will sollte von frühen Taker-Matches echt die Finger lassen. Der Main Event war dann aber ein mehr als nur würdiger Abschluss eines insgesamt sehr starken SummerSlams. Bret Hart und der Bulldog geben wirklich alles und schenken sich nichts. Auch technisch wird hier einiges geboten, ein echter All-Time-Klassiker. Mit einem völlig ausflippenden Wembley Stadion wird einer der besten SummerSlams aller Zeiten beendet. |
| 97 | 31.01.2016 | Smi-48 | 7.0 | Im Main-Event Bereich, also bei den Titelverteidigungen von Savage und Hart, ist das hier der klar beste Summerslam bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt. Die beiden erwähnten Matches haben es wirklich in sich und die lange Pause Hogans tut dem Gesamteindruck der Show und der Matchqualität in den wichtigen Regionen sichtlich gut. Aber besonders der überragende Mainer überstrahlt auch viel Gegurke am unteren Ende der Card - der Opener und das Match zwischen Michaels und Martel (dramatisch overbooked) befinden sich knapp auf akzeptablem Niveau, der Taker und das Tag-Titles Match knapp darunter. Bleiben noch die beiden Begegnungen zwischen Nailz und Virgil, sowie Crush und dem Repo-Man, welche allesamt durch Gimmickmüll beladen totale Anti-Matches darstellen. Im Grunde kann man mit Recht behaupten, dass diese Show aufgrund des tollen Matches am Ende und dem emotionalen Triumph des Bulldog schon etwas verklärt wirkt. Hier scheinen einige Sterne richtig hell, die Veranstaltung hat einen hohen Wiedererkennungswert, aber das ist bei Weitem nicht alles gut, was hier geboten wird. Sieben faire Punkte, weil dieser PPV genau da funktioniert, wo es wichtig ist. |

Da Bret und der Bulldog meine Lieblinge waren, war ich natürlich hin- und hergerissen, dann dieses "sportliche" Finish nach dem Match, dazu die (auch heute noch) beeindruckende Crowd in Wembley inkl. entsprechender Stimmung. Auf der VHS sind sogar die Dark-Matches mit drauf (hätte es auch nicht gebraucht). Der Main-Event eine klare 10, für WWF-Wrestling haben die beiden alles rausgehauen, Savage vs Warrior eigentlich in der gleichen Liga, lediglich die Eingriffe fand ich hier etwas viel. Das LoD-Intro sollte man auch gesehen haben, Martel vs Michaels und der Eimer für Sherri auch gut, Taker ist halt Taker, Rest egal. Coole Show. |
