[8.0] "Its okay for wrestling commentators to not have over the top personalities. In every other sport, the commentators simply commentate - so I'm not sure why there's a big obsession with having something different in wrestling. Hannifan and Matt Rehwoldt are a great duo!"

Unlike Cole, he isn't generic to a point where he talks to you like you're 4 years old and doesn't use that terrible "OMG everything is so insane that happens" disingenuous sounding call that Cole does. And unlike Excalibur he actually knows how to call wrestling to some degree without sounding like a fan narrating their own wwe 2k matches while playing. He has decent delivery, he sounds legit, he just isn't incredibly charismatic and isn't incredible at telling stories."

[2.0] "He reminds me a lot of Vic Joseph. Very generic sounding. Which makes sense since they were both trained by Michael Cole. Cole, Joseph, and Hannifan not only all sound the same, but I never got the impression that any of them were fans of wrestling until they got hired because they needed a job. There's nothing inherently wrong with that but it certainly explains why they're so bad at what they do. What really bothers me about Hannifan is after every big move he lets out an "OH OHHHH OHHHH". Any high impact move you know it's coming. It sounds less like passion and more like distress. I don't think he's any better than Josh Matthews or Matt Striker."

[8.0] "I'm not sure where some of the recent negative reviews are coming from. Hannifan isn't among my favorite announcers of all time, but he's a very solid play-by-play guy. Probably the best one Impact has had as their primary play-by-play announcer Impact has had since Mike Tenay."

[2.0] "Tom Phillips is a dull, boring and lifeless commentator who wants to be the next Michael Cole and he's a couple silly catchphrases and nonsensical conversational topics away from being just as bad. Some of his performances are so robotic and bad. His WrestleMania 36 commentary was absolutely shameful. He sounds like he was produced in a factory. Him and Saxton were my least favorite commentating duo for awhile. Since he's joined Impact the little I've heard from him there isn't any better."

[8.0] "Just heard him at Hard to Kill and it was a breath of fresh air. Maybe it's the "not Josh Mathews" effect, but I heard an actual good commentator, someone who Tom was before he was remoulded by the WWE machine into being just a generic WWE commentator. He was good back in his WWE days too, and I was shocked when they let him go."

[5.0] "Decent as a commentator, but at the same time, he is yet another Cole clone. Cole has had such an impact on wrestling commentary across every promotion & the wrestling world is so much worse for it. Phillips is not bad, but he still delivers with the same old & tired WWE cadence."
Okaro143 wrote on 24.09.2020:

[9.0] "Somewhat shocked at his low rating. A great voice for commentary. He does his job REALLY well, he is the future. Once Michael Cole retires I can see him taking over as lead commentator."

[6.0] "This kid is the future of play by play commentary in the WWE. The sooner they drop Cole and get Phillips at the head of the announce teams for RAW and Smackdown, the better. He's not quite at JR or the Professor's level yet but he's only just begun. Not only does he have a solid sports broadcasting pedigree, but he's also-and this is very important for any good pro wrestling announcer-a FAN of pro wrestling. You can tell he's passionate about the sport and its people and history. It's a refreshing change of pace from the bored-sounding, Twitter-focused Cole. Here's to hoping Tom Phillips rises to the top. He has what it takes to make WWE programming a more wrestling-oriented product. It needs it."
