1209.01.2024cactus8.0This had plenty for me to nitpick, but I was suckered into the finishing stretch and was biting on the close calls and that's all that really matters. Ospreay got a bit of flak for his performance here and I understand why. His hardman C'MON BRUV trash talking will make you you roll your eyes and that strike tradeoff was so cliché that even Don Callis buried it on commentary, but I didn't find him too offensive despite that. The opening is your standard indy start where they trade lightning quick exchanges that establish both wrestlers are equals. It's overdone but it was pulled enough with enough flashy acrobatics that it worked in this context. The best parts of this match was when KUSHIDA would find ways to work over Will's arm in order to soften it up for the Hoverboard Lock. I was engrossed whenever KUSHIDA would lock in that hold during the go-home stretch. Ospreay's selling of it was great as well, with him even taking the time to groan in pain as he counters a whip. Ospreay's leg slapping Cheeky Nandos flurry did detract from my enjoyment of the closing moments, but KUSHIDA sickening matching-ending sequence was enough to wash it from my mind.

2110.10.2023Kyle from TheMatchGuide10.0An essential junior heavyweight classic between 2 titans of the junior division. Kushida's limb work is excellent, and Opsreay sells it like death. They move fluidly between moves, and the crowd ramps in excitement as they both trade big blow after big blow. The Reverse Rana on Kushida looked like absolute money, and the strike trade sequence that ends in closed-fisted strikes is a wonderful exchange as well. An absolute must-see match. 5 Stars.
2203.10.2023Okaro14310.0The match was so clean. Very fundamental start like most epic New Japan matches, A little bit of limbwork by Kushida which Ospreay sold beautifully. The action was back and forth, it was very competitive with a very fluid pacing and not a single dull moment. There was a lot of style and spectacular spots but the action was mostly grounded and basic. They didn't try too hard to stand out but every action was as picture perfect as could be and there was almost no wasted movement. 25+ mins of professional wrestling excellence. Amazing match. *****

3816.04.2023Tyler729.0Simply one of the greatest matches of all time if not extremely close. This is where the best are at, and the best example of what wrestling should be. An exceptional performance from both KUSHIDA and Ospreay that went beyond my expectations, and was truly the Best of the Super Juniors and what they had to offer in 2017. They clearly put a tremendous amount of effort into preparing for this event as both men just blended so well together with their in ring action and chemistry.

4614.01.2023BrayanLaPre Two of the best wrestlers of their generation. KUSHIDA was the Junior Heavyweight king at this time and this match was just another feather in his cap. Will Ospreay was in the early stages of his ascension but had already displayed remarkable ability at just 24 years of age. These two had also wrestled two singles matches prior to this, including an absolute classic at Invasion Attack 2016. Unfortunately for Ospreay, he was 0-2 against KUSHIDA in singles matches coming into this. And that was the perfect foundation for this match. At the start, this was all about two world-class wrestlers looking to gain the upper hand. Ospreay attempted to outwrestle KUSHIDA, but was quickly informed of the disparity between them on the mat. That is saying something considering The Aerial Assassin is also a brilliant technical wrestler. Ospreay then attempted to stand things up and win that way, but was reminded once more of the elite athleticism that KUSHIDA possessed in his own right. As cracks in the armor began to show, Ospreay and his famous temper took over. He engaged in striking battles with KUSHIDA, which was all that was necessary for the limb targeting to begin. Kicks to the arm and leg were as effective as anything else, with KUSHIDA blitzing Ospreay every time it seemed as though the underdog would prevail. KUSHIDA is as good as anyone ever has been at working over an arm or a leg, and he gave yet another masterclass in this one. Ospreay sold the leg well, including the gradual build to getting feeling and stability back in his knee. Unfortunately, the arm was still an option. As KUSHIDA presented counter after counter, Ospreay turned up the dial. He no longer seemed focused on winning the match, but instead on hurting his opponent. That petulance has become significant piece of the story of Ospreay during his career, and this match was a major development in that long-running story. Ospreay would decimate his opponent, but would also focus so much on inflicting pain that the counters were right there in front of KUSHIDA. He would claim fighting spirit by stating he wanted to trade strikes, but lose his cool when KUSHIDA got the best of him and break the back and forth. He would claim honor and respect, but leave KUSHIDA outside of the ring in the hope of a count-out victory in the biggest match of his career. It was an absolute dissection of Ospreay as both a wrestler and person. And it was one of the best matches of a legendary year in professional wrestling.

6410.05.2022ShineyxDiver10.0KUSHIDA started in the beginning with a double whammy of assaulting the arm and leg, and once the leg work didn't seem to work he went after the arm. Then when that didn't put Ospreay away this time, he just slammed him with a couple bombs to finish it off. Fantastic fucking match, with my favorite part being the slap fight followed by Will being punched in the neck. *****

6703.04.2022UWF Rules Enthusiast10.0This was a great match, and it was a relatively long match. It was fitting that the final of the most prestigious junior heavyweight tournament of the year featured the two best junior heavyweights in the world at that time. There was lots of great action, and there were plenty of great moves. Ospreay's reverse rana on KUSHIDA on the apron looked sick.

7331.10.2021TheLegitBoss10.0Incredible match between Kushida and Ospreay and surely one of my favourite matches of both wrestlers' careers, it was simply everything I expected from them and everything a final of this prestigious BOSJ tournament should be. They put no limits or restrictions on themselves, they decided to give it their all for almost thirty minutes and I couldn't be happier to know that this match existed. After watching it for the first time, I can definitely say that it made me happy for the rest of the day because I went through a lot of emotions and only positive ones. They got me out of my seat during some of the sequences, they made me hallucinate during some mind-blowing spots and they built everything they wanted to do so well. Everything in the intention as well as the execution was absolute perfection, I really miss that time when Kushida was one of the best wrestlers on the planet and it makes me even sadder to see him being portrayed as a joke in a rivalry with the awful Creed Brothers now on NXT. But I don't want to be negative because I have nothing but love for this five-stars match that deserves all the praise in the world, these two guys are sensational.

8019.06.2021Judestar9.0Near perfect Junior style of wrestling and easily the best of this tournament, one of KUSHIDA's best individual performances ever. I would probably go the full 5 had Ospreay factored in some of the limb selling from earlier in the match as it could've enhanced the finishing stretch even further ****3/4.

9205.08.2020RoscoeSantangelo10.0Absolutely classic final the perfectly shows off the chemistry these guys built up. The Incredible intensity at the start made this hype from beginning to end. Ospreay was really going into KUSHIDA, but he gave it right back. They weren't wasting any movements, every chance they had to keep the action moving they took, even if it's just giving some chops while in a submission, etc. They just perfectly worked a match to keep it moving. Superb pacing to never feel like there's a down moment, it just builds and builds. Just phenomenal storytelling and selling as the action got hotter and hotter. The ending minutes of this match make it all pay off in epic fashion *****
9316.06.2020AndoCommando7.0There's a lot to like about this match, but if you had to point at something here to criticize it would be Will Ospreay. Ospreay's ceiling must be one of the highest any wrestler has, but it's on him to deliver on that potential. Ospreay didn't deliver in this match, and what could've been an incredible rubber match in their rivalry, turned out to be one of the weakest BOSJ Finals matches in recent memory. KUSHIDA was on his A-game and while he did have moments of unbelievability (though no one beats Ospreay in that regard), he was consistently the better of the two. Him targeting Will's leg and arm was great and Ospreay's screams honestly worked well to sell the offense. But that's as far as the psychology in this match goes, because Will Ospreay decided to stop selling the leg work because they're Jr. Heavyweights and they have to get in their high spots. Honestly, this is a match comprised of two parts: a more technical, realistic and psychology-driven beginning, and a high-octane, spot-heavy finish that made the former nearly worthless. Also a slight nitpick here, but the part where Ospreay blocks the Kimura by clasping his hands together behind his back I find so ridiculous in the New Japan setting, regardless of its callback to their previous outings. ***1/2
9406.05.2020The Beholder10.0This match was absolutely insane. They were pulling out spots of holy-shitness at a staggering clip in this match. This was everything you would hope for in a tournament final. *****
