That being said - despite sometimes this bout started being slow and not such exciting in the middle - this is still very good, considering the last bumps Kobashi took. Legendary finish and solid match overall. ****1/2"

[9.0] "This match is pure puroresu bliss. Hard hitting, back and forth action with the constant, underlying air of danger that Dr. Death always brings to his matches. Williams is right up there with Hansen for me as the perfect monster for young Kobashi to try to overcome. He's so explosive and is able to shut down Kobashi's comebacks in the blink of an eye. The early portions of the match were a tad slow and Williams busting out an awful looking Mutoh Space Rolling Elbow on the floor took the match down just a smidge, as funny as it was. It didn't fit the match whatsoever. With that said, this is a bonafide classic and a must watch for anyone that likes puroresu."

[9.0] "Tremendous, exactly what you expect from classic All Japan. Although I always forget how nimble and technically sound this big beefy goliaths are. They were so well rounded. Popped for the powerslam on the floor, the ddt off the railing, Williams picking up Kobashi like he is a small child, the running powerslam is art. Then we have the finish. Rip Kobashi's neck not once, not twice but three of the sickest backdrop drivers you will ever see. ****3/4"

denierstragedies schrieb am 29.04.2022:
[9.0] "With the finishing stretch in mind it's hard to give this match anything lower than a 9 really, as Williams attempts to kill Kobashi with multiple Dangerous Backdrops onto his head and Kobashi showing he has the strongest fighting spirit in wrestling history as he attempts to get back up by pulling himself up on the ropes afterwards. The crowd are electric for the final stretch as every move or even indication of a move like the backdrop or Kobashi's moonsault sends them into fever-pitch. The rest of the match is strong, especially the first few minutes, but the closing stretch is certainly what makes this match an all-timer. 9/10."

[9.0] "A lot of my rating come from the absolutely insane last 5 minutes. There is so much tension created here, great near-falls, counters.... But the rest of the match is good, but not as much as Steve Williams vs Kenta Kobashi should be. There isn't really any interesting things happening, just two wrestlers trading moves very well but without a point. Still a great match, but far from a five stars imo. ****1/4"
OraclePuro schrieb am 08.08.2021:
[10.0] "This was a fantastic match. That was barely and slow periods in it and there was the right pacing that allowed the audience to absorb what had just happened before the next big sequence. Suddenly there was a sense of urgency and the drama became far greater. At the end there were the two famous Backdrop Drivers. It was an insanely dangerous move that could've easily broken his neck. The sound that this suplex in the ring made is impressive. Steve Williams won in 27 minutes. Kobashi is not in a position to have his first opportunity at the Triple Crown Championship, but after his match against Hansen in July, he proves he is the best in the world in 1993. (****3/4)"
BrayanLaPre schrieb am 02.08.2021:
[10.0] "Five-star classic! From before the opening bell even sounds, intensity radiates from both of these legends. And then they spend 27+ minutes trying to make it so the other wouldn? t be able to exit the ring under their own power. This was the very definition of the clash of the titans, as two powerhouses with various manners of inflicting damage threw everything they knew how to throw at each other. Best of all: Everything was deliberate. Everything was intentional. Every single moment of this match served the strategies that were established in the opening minutes of this marathon. An absolute war that ranks amongst the best matches in AJPW history. 5 stars, 10 out of 10."

[10.0] "This is the type of match that will grow hair on your balls. It's incredibly intense from bell to bell. Williams shows that he's actually got loads of charisma as acts like a total jock to Kobashi. Watching both guys hype themselves up during the chopping segments kicked all kinds of ass. I have no idea how Kobashi didn't break his neck on those three Backdrop Drivers. Kobashi isn't able to win the Triple Crown on this night, but he won the hearts of the AJPW fans."
TigerDiver schrieb am 04.07.2021:
[9.0] "A manly fight between two of the hardest hitting wrestlers in the entire sport. A bunch of brutal, stiff exchanges between the two en route to one of the most devastating finish ever that saw Kobashi receive not one, not two, but THREE backdrop suplexes straight on his damn neck. [****1/2]"
The Beholder schrieb am 08.05.2021:
[10.0] "Like Kobashi's match with Hansen the month before, the 5-star rating might not hold up as well today, but this is still a fantastic match with an iconic ending. It's not the most exciting match in the world but it continuously builds to the conclusion. The ending is what makes this match. They had already been dropping bombs on each other, but then Williams hits a vicious backdrop driver on Kobashi, and somehow he kicked out. Kobashi tries to block another, but he doesn't have enough left in the tank, and Williams hits perhaps the most sickening backdrop I've ever seen. Yet somehow Kobashi doesn't stay down and tries with all his might to get back to his feet because he refuses to give up. Incredulous, Williams hits Kobashi with another backdrop, this time into a pin, which finally keeps Kobashi down. This does wonders to put Kobashi over as a potential future champion. ****3/4-*****"

[6.0] "On my first watch of this nearly 5 years ago, I didn't get the hype but still thought it was a really good match. Now, I still don't get the hype and I find that this match appeals to me even less. The biggest issue I had with the match was the lack of tension created. There were no exciting sequences where both wrestlers got to display their equally impressive skill. It felt more like just a normal wrestling match, not the epic that I expected to see based off of the reception I'd seen it receive. There were bursts of excitement in the opening few minutes and in the closing few minutes, but everything else in the middle truly felt like pure filler, with both men seemingly operating at half-effort (or at least quarter-creativity). My second major issue with the match was Kobashi and Williams' chemistry. At times, their moves didn't connect well, or their bodies would get caught up, and this noticeably happened quite a few times in the supposedly 'exciting' second half. As everyone else agrees, the final stretch of the match was pretty stunning. Kobashi showed good heart as he constantly went for the finish, and then Williams delivered some absolutely disgusting backdrops in which he dumped Kobashi on his head before picking up the win. It did feel a bit overkill having all these nearfalls and big bombs crammed into just the last 7 ish minutes, but this was also the only part of the match that properly built up tension and felt truly exciting, so I appreciated it for that reason. The majority of the match was still a pretty good display of skill from both wrestlers, and I particularly enjoyed when either guy was trying to prove how resilient they were, but it wasn't anywhere near quality I'd equate to a 5-star match, and this is far, far, FAR away from being one of Kobashi's top singles matches. ***1/4"

[10.0] "Okay WOW! What a brutal, insane and amazing match it was. I already knew how grat Kobashi is and he was great in this match but Steve Williams really suprised me. I always thought that he is some boring wrestler from the WWF and that's it but I'm glad to know that I was wrong. The match was intresting from the start until the end and the end was F***ING GOLD. Part of the match felt a little messy to me, but that's really, really not so bad."
SmarkCalaway schrieb am 29.07.2020:
[9.0] "Impeccable pacing, not a single move appeared out of place, wasted or like filler. Kobashi starts off on top but then Willliams hulks up and starts beating the crap out of him. Then Kobashi hulks up and starts beating the crap out of him. Then they brawl to the outside and damage each other both with Kobashi hitting a DDT on Williams and Williams slamming Kobashi. Back in the ring and Williams is on the offense but then CHANCE for Kobashi as Williams goes to the top rope and fucks up. Kobashi builds momentum and starts hitting his big moves, moonsault included, but he can't keep Williams down. Another subplot to this is Kobashi trying desperately to avoid the backdrop driver from Williams which he ultimately succumbs to. He gets hit with three brutal drops and his selling on the third is amazing. Very, very impressive. This still isn't a 5 star match for me and I mark it a shade below his match versus Hansen as it felt like the fans bought into the potential of him beating Hansen more than they did here with Williams. **** 1/2"
zephyr schrieb am 19.07.2020:
[10.0] "A classic tale of brutality vs tenacity, expertly worked and perfectly paced. Combined with a crowd so hot that it became difficult to hear the commentators at times and an electric atmosphere, you get a match that's still genuinely exciting in 2020. Simply brilliant."

[7.0] "Unlike the Hansen match where the match got better upon revisiting, this didn't captizate me nearly as much as it first did. I really adored the finishing stretch but that is about as far as my love went for this match. This just seemed to really lack tension in the build. Kobashi is a tremendous underdog, we know this but Dr Death clearly is still figuring out how to work his background into a compelling long singles match. ***1/2"

[10.0] "excellent match all the way. strong work right from the start. a great atmosphere for the match as the fans are completely into everything these two are doing. really stiff shots from both. hard chops, slaps, kicks, punches, all that you would expect. great, intense expressions from both men. neither letting up with attacks and neither giving up till the very end. real good moves like DDT to Williams onto the floor. German suplex onto Williams' head, Military press slam to Kobashi to the floor, scoop slam to Kobashi onto the floor, Kobashi's signature machine gun chops, and many more. really great when you hear super loud rumbling from the fans near the end when they were going all the big moves like Kobashi with the moonsault and Williams with the oklahoma stampede and the backdrop driver. above and beyond great."

[10.0] "Just shock and fucking awe. Kobashi's battle with Hansen was a stiff war, but this Williams match is a god damn bomb fest. Just some of the nastiest spots I have ever seen are in this match like the damn DDT Kobashi gives WIlliams on the floor, and obviously I can't go on without mentioning those DISGUSTING Backdrops at the end of the match. There was a beautiful harmony in the way Kobashi immediately gets up after the second one desperately not wanting to give up even though he's stumbling. This wouldn't be the last time these two iron men just tear the house down trying to tear each other apart, *****."

[9.0] "Really good stuff, but not as good as their match from 9/94. Nice wrestling action all-around, with some novel stuff. Williams is a bit sloppy, which detracts a bit. He seems obviously winded; he obviously can't keep up with Kobashi on this day. But Kobashi carries, and the last 5 minutes or so are great. Williams DESTROYS Kobashi at the end with THREE backdrop suplexes that are just brutal and very scary to watch. ****1/2."

Kobashi shows in this match why he holds a claim to the title of greatest underdog performer ever, however I felt Williams could have brought a more energetic performance. Incredible finishing sequence highlighting Kobashi's determination and resilience."

Williams was good in the dominant role and his moves just looked destructive. One could feel the hate these two had for each other here and it was good to see and the crowd was hot for this one and once Williams was able to connect with the Backdrop Driver it was all over for Kobashi.

Volle Punkzahl. *****"

[10.0] "1993 saw Kobashi thrown to the lions as such, being booked as a rising young prospect in a series of matches with some of the roughest, toughest and meanest veterans AJPW had at their disposal. This is one such example – a really vicious brawl that went a long way to getting Kobashi sympathetically over with the crowd by highlighting his toughness, drive, grit, and never quit attitude. Quite how he walked away after the finishing run is beyond me though, with Kobashi being on the receiving end of some of the scariest head-drop suplexes you will ever see."
