Title:
"Ric Flair, the great state of Texas is after your blood!"
Date:
13.11.1982
[After being injured by King Kong Bundy (allegedly thanks to a $10,000 bounty that NWA Champion Ric Flair had placed on von Erich's head), Kerry von Erich is sitting down with Bill Mercer to discuss his return and his desire to challenge for Flair's title]

Bill Mercer: "Kerry, the doctor tells me your knee rehabilitation is going quite well. How do you feel?"

Kerry von Erich: "I feel great, Bill. My knee is totally rehabilitated now. I'm physically and mentally ready. Last time we talked I wasn't mentally ready - as you saw - now I'm mentally ready. It's not only the title I'm after now, it's Ric Flair."

Bill Mercer: "Speaking of Ric Flair, he, I suppose, is still waiting for you to bring out the facts of the alleged bounty. What is your feeling about it?"

Kerry von Erich: "Well, you know, he says there's no bounty, uh, which is, you know, that's a bunch of bull because, um, we have proof. I don't need to bring the proof out right now because I don't need it, but when I need it, the proof is there."

Bill Mercer: "Alright, Ric Flair in an interview did not mention the bounty. He did say some uncomplimentary things about you, let's watch it, I want your comments afterwards." [A video-taped interview is shown in which Flair calls himself the greatest wrestler of all time. He says von Erich is not in his league, but if he wants to face him in the ring he'll do so if he offers the right financial incentives]

Kerry von Erich: "You know, as you can tell, Bill... the way Ric Flair talk-- the game is over; there's no game anymore. [looking directly into camera] Sure, it was a whole lot of fun, Ric Flair: We had a great time. But you know the game's over now. This is serious business, baby, this is for the World Heavyweight Championship. The game was over five weeks ago. That's when it was over, Flair. This is war. I don't only want the belt, but I want you as well."

Bill Mercer: "And.. it seems to me that he's trying to provoke you into a good contract, and a good deal, here?"

Kerry von Erich: "Right. He, um... y'know, we can- we can work deals. But he said 'Gimme incentive' - your incentive, Flair, is that I'm the best in the world. And, you should, as a champion, want to know that for your own self. I wouldn't be the world champion if I wasn't legitly [he means 'legitimately'] the World Champion... And I think that's the way all of us feel, Bill."

Bill Mercer: "Certainly put down Dallas / Fort Worth too."

Kerry von Erich: "Right you know he's covering Dallas / Fort Worth, slurring our name all over the place. [to camera] It's not just me, Flair, it's Dallas and Fort Worth and the great state of Texas, that's after your blood!"
- Note: Von Erich would get his wish, facing off with Ric Flair in a No Disqualification Steel Cage Match at WCCW Christmas Star Wars. Just as it seemed von Erich was about to escape the cage and win the belt, Terry Gordy slammed the door closed on his head, allowing Flair to win and retain, and igniting the legendary Von Erichs vs Freebirds feud.
