Interview with Rhett Titus (english)

Interview

Article information
CAGEMATCH.de: A simple question to start off this interview: How are you? Are you happy with your current situation in wrestling or generally in life? Any good music you could recommend? And how is your son doing?

Rhett Titus: I'm great, thanks for asking, hope you can say the same. Just hanging out, about to hit up the gym for my second workout of the day, until then just chillin' at home before the big weekend in Florida! As far as music, IDK how familiar you are with Meek Mill but he's gotta hot new jam "I'm Rollin'". And as far as my son :-( he seems to have a little bit of an ear infection, so he's seen some better days!

A little follow-up on "How are you feeling": As all ROH fans know, you've been through a rough time lately with your leg injury. At the "10th Anniversary", you've successfully returned to the ring and won your match against Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin. With that said: How is your leg holding up? Any second thoughts on returning sooner than recommended by the doctors?

My leg is holding up pretty good so far! I've been doing some indy shots and I'm feeling pretty, pretty, pretty good! Finished up my physical therapy last week and they say I'm good to go. As far as returning too soon: in a perfect world I would've waited 'til I was 100% but these bills gotta get paid!! Naw mean homie?

You are probably the most well-known graduate of the ROH Wrestling Academy. You debuted in ROH in 2006 and fought many dark matches in the following years. Finally, in 2008, you became a part of the main shows, won the Top Of The Class Trophy and had a bitter rivalry with Delirious. But your REAL breakthrough was in 2009, when you started to team with a man called Kenny King. The All-Night Express was born, and you've started to make a name for yourselves, you even got Austin Aries to be some kind of mentor for you. Now, about two years later, you are one of the top teams in ROH. What are your thoughts on your eventful career from ROH Student to ROH Original?

From Dark Matches to Main Events it's all kinda surreal. Doing ringside security during the shows, just waiting for an opportunity to get a shot! It's all been one crazy journey and I wouldn't trade any of my experiences away. Looking back I think the funniest part of it is watching the Original Ladder War Match with The Briscoes vs. Kevin Steen and El Generico and Rhett Titus doing ringside security during it. When I was sitting there watching I never would imagine that in a few short years I'd be taking part in one of those crazy matches!

You've made a name for yourself in the States, but what about other continents in the world? Many independent wrestlers travel around the whole world, from Japan to Europe, from Mexico to Canada, most recently Adam Cole and Sami Callihan. Are you interested in wrestling on other continents or are you just focusing on your current projects? I for one would be excited to see you over here in Germany!

I would love to do more worldwide traveling... there has been some talks in the past of going to other continents and countries but it's fallen through. I would love to go to Germany as well! I've seen some Westside Xtreme Wrestling shows and the setup and the crowd is just awesome and would love to be a part of it!

Would you be interested in wrestling for one of the two mainstream wrestling promotions, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling or World Wrestling Entertainment? As of late, many wrestlers try their chance in the big leagues and you certainly would fit right into them.

I'd love to go to WWE or TNA but I have many goals left to accomplish in ROH and am very happy here right now.

Let's talk about Ring Of Honor. The promotion recently celebrated it's 10th birthday and you've been a part of it for most of the time. You have seen many wrestlers come and go, many champions win and lose their belts... What are your thoughts on Ring Of Honor as the biggest independent promotion in the United States? And what about the past ten years, do you have any memories you would like to share? Any wrestlers or matches that left a noteworthy impression on you?

I've been a part of ROH for the past 7 years, but most don't know that I was a huge ROH fan before that. ROH actually brought back my love for pro wrestling. I was at the very first ROH show in Philly at The Murphy Rec and it changed my view on wrestling and what it should be forever! I've seen a lot of big matches in ROH and hell, I've been a part of a lot of big matches in ROH. The ones that really takes the cake for me though were Samoa Joe vs. Kenta Kobashi and CM Punk vs. Austin Aries. Those were nights where there was just something different in the air and you could feel something special happening!!!

"Showdown In The Sun" is only a couple of days away and we already know your matches: together with Kenny King you will face the Young Bucks on both nights. You will battle them in a Tornado Tag Team Match and in a Street Fight, the order of those matches will be determined via coin toss on the first night. You already have a big history with the Young Bucks and they are pretty much responsible for your injury. Are you excited about finally getting your hands on the Bucks? What are your general thoughts on the Young Bucks? And do you have any expectations for the matches?

I am more than delighted to get my hands on those skinny lil schleps! My thoughts concerning them: yes, they are a very talented, yes, they are a team to beat, but they done f**ed with the wrong ones!!! Maybe they can pull this S*** with Caprice Coleman 'n Cedric Alexander or the Bravado Brothers. But ANX, nah homie don't play that game!!! We've fought the Briscoes in every sorta match and they're regarded as the baddest tag team on the planet and we whipped their asses!! Young Bucks will be completely out of their element this weekend: Tornado Tag, Street Fight! All I know: Ft. Lauderdale will see Dual Days of RHETTribution!

The Briscoes will battle Wrestling's Greatest Tag Team on the second night of Showdown In The Sun. Now that you are finally back in action and pretty much inserted yourself at the top of the division with a win over the current #1 contenders, who do you think will win the match? And what are your thoughts on both teams?

Quite frankly this should be our tag title match. Im no longer sidelined with an injury, we have a tag title shot in our back pocket, and were ready to go! Haas and Benjamin getting a shot is BS, we beat them in the Proving Ground, and in NYC this should be our chance! ROH officials are in panic mode though, trying their best to get the belts off of Briscoes before giving us our shot. ROH doesn't want ANX vs. Briscoes to happen again, especially with the ROH Tag Titles at stake!

And while we're at it: Ring Of Honor has (in my opinion) by far the deepest and most diverse tag team division of any promotion in the whole world. The All-Night Express, Haas & Benjamin, the Briscoes, the Young Bucks, Alexander & Coleman, and those are only the current main competitors! Your thoughts on the rise of the Tag Team division in the past couple of years?

There is no better tag team wrestling today than in ROH. There's a bunch of hungry tag teams here and whenever someone slips up, there is always someone ready to come take your spot. I thought when the Kings Of Wrestling left the tag scene... but since then teams like the Bravados, Caprice 'n Cedric, and the Young Bucks have all stepped up.

We talked about many of ROH's tag teams, but what about your own partner, Kenny King? Obviously, you make a great team, but what do you think about King as an athlete and a competitor? What does Kenny King bring to the table that you don't?

Wouldn't trade Kenny King for anybody. He is a tremendous athlete, whether it be the football field, the wrestling ring or the Chippendales stage! Kenny brings a few extra years of experience and wisdom to the table. But whatever I'm lacking in, Kenny is always there to make up the difference and vice versa.

On Friday and Saturday, you will compete in the squared circle but as you may know, on Sunday night there is a little show called WrestleMania 28. Will you watch the show? If so, what match are you looking forward to the most? And what do you think of ROH alumi CM Punk und Bryan Danielson as current world champions?

Of course I'll be watching... if you're not then how could you be a student of the game??? It's the biggest show of the year that everyone wants to get to. Luckily Punk and Bryan made it there and are doing very well for themselves! I have to say The Rock vs. John Cena has me most intrigued... it really has that big match WrestleMania moment feel to it!

Okay, I think we've tortured you enough with questions. To end this interview, I would like to play a little word association game. I'll give you keywords and you just tell us what comes to your mind.

Kenny King: Thats Myy Dawwwg
Young Bucks: Dead Men Walkin'
Ring Of Honor: Best wrestling in the world
