Nach mehreren Monaten Inaktivität schloss die American Wrestling Association im Frühjahr 1991 die Pforten.

Larry Zbyszko verließ die inaktive AWA für einen festen Vertrag mit der aufstrebenden WCW. Der Titel wurde ihm aberkannt und für vakant erklärt.

Larry Zbyszko gewann eine Battle Royal um den vakanten Titel.

Jerry Lawler unifizierte am 13. Dezember 1988 mit einem Sieg über Kerry Van Erich den AWA World Heavyweight Title mit dem WCCW World Heavyweight Title zum USWA Unified World Heavyweight Title. Am 20. Januar 1989 trennten sich die AWA und WCCW allerdings wieder und Lawler wurde der AWA World Heavyweight Title aberkannt.

Nachdem Stan Hansen bei einer Show am 29. Juni 1986 nicht erschien und die Promotion verließ, wurde der Titel an Nick Bockwinkel überreicht. Hansen verteidigte den Gürtel inoffiziell bei All Japan im Juli 1986 weiter.

Verne Gagne beendete seine Karriere. Der Titel wurde an den vorherigen Champion Nick Bockwinkel gegeben, der nach Gagne den Titel am längsten gehalten hatte.

Am 13.02.1974 verlor Verne Gagne den Titel in einem Match in Honolulu, Hawaii an Billy Robinson. Der Titelwechsel wurde jedoch nur im Hawaii-Territorium anerkannt, überall anders wurde Gagne weiter als Champion geführt.

Der amtierende NWA World Heavyweight Champion Pat O'Connor wurde im Mai 1960 nach der Trennung von der NWA als erster AWA World Champion anerkannt, unter der Bedingung, dass er innerhalb von neunzig Tagen den Titel gegen Verne Gagne verteidigen würde. Nach Ablauf der Frist ohne Titelverteidigung zog die AWA ihre Anerkennung zurück und ernannte Verne Gagne zu ihrem ersten World Heavyweight Champion.
