Yes, Bobo Brazil was great in the 50's and early 60's, but he became NWA Heavyweight champion when he was well into his 50's and could barely enter the ring anymore. Same thing about folks like Johnny Valentine and Wahoo McDaniel: great great wrestlers in their prime but wore this belt when they had no business being anywhere near the title scene anymore. The title was really elevated by Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat and Greg Valentine: great champions all of them and Valentine's chase of his first title was a great slow burn feud with Flair including an epic 60 minute draw. The title was resurrected in 1997 for reasons unknown since Tully Blanchard (a good champion in any promotion) basically had one match and then the whole thing was just forgotten. |
