But, unless you're a wrestling historian whose an expert and a fan of 70s/80s wrestling and/or the USWA, I really don't think that's what you think of Jerry Lawler when his name is mentioned. I know him primarily for his color commentary work, which frankly isn't bad at all in the grand scheme of things and for the time. Personally, however, it's hard for me to really enjoy his commentary without cringing all the damn time. Again, I get it of the time and our sensibilities have drastically changed since then, but that really isn't an excuse. Believe it or not, I really don't wanna hear an old ass man talking about women in the most perverted, disgusting way possible, mentioning he likes them younger and getting horny whenever any woman enters the ring even for a second. Not to mention all the weird shit he's said asides from being perverted. Do I need to mention the Chinese hospital line from the 2000 edition of the Royal Rumble? And of course, the big allegation from the early 90s that while he didn't get convicted of, a lot of the information around it really makes him absolutely suspect in my opinion. That, and his feud with Micheal Cole was shit. I just can't stand him."

What you get most from the guy is consistency: there's no bad weeks or terrible matches with Lawler for the most part, just a lot of solid material, regardless of if he's a hometown babyface beating down the heel, or a heel himself working the crowd into a frenzy. I can get not being a huge fan of his style but legit, Lawler could work a lot more athletically when needed, and you see small aspects of that in heated matches. Don't base your views on him with the comedy WWE shit or whatnot, go out and check his Memphis stuff. In terms of ring IQ, there's honestly not many with the range and the ability like him. -1 for the commentary stuff."

Ironic humor at its best. He's a lot smarter than people gave him credit for, but he wasn't there to provide "insight". He was there to be entertaining, and in that respect I think he was successful. And I'm saying this as someone who doesn't like Lawler much as a person. Too many wrestling fans take this fake sport way too seriously and need to lighten up. There is place for lighthearted fun in pro-wrestling."

Known for his one-liners and shrikes, Lawler along with Jim Ross became the voices of one of the best periods of wrestling, the Attitude Era. Lawler became stale in recent years before a complete removal from commentary. However, Lawler is a legend of the industry and succeeded as a draw and a commentator."
[3.0] "I have always viewed Lawler as overrated. Yes he drew in Memphis but he also booked himself in a way that kept him on top & never allowed for new stars to be created. Also, take him outside of Memphis & he was nothing but a mid-card draw at best. Heck at least Verne Gagne allowed for others (Bockwinkel is a prime example) to be the top guy in Minneapolis, too bad Lawler could not do that in his home territory."

So weit ich weiß ist Lawler sogar der Mann gegen den der Hitman die meisten Niederlagen einstecken musste. Seine Fehde mit Doink bot noch einen gewissen Unterhaltungswert, die Rivalität mit Roddy Piper fand ich dagegen weniger interessant. Durch seine extrem guten Darstellungen am Mikro (egal in welcher Form) bekommt Lawler 8 Punkte, eine höhere Punktzahl wird ihm durch seine mäßigen Fähigkeiten im Ring verwehrt."

Aber mir gehts hier um den Wrestler-und der hatte Licht und Schatten. Als Heel gegen Bret z. B konnte er seine Stärke als grandioser Rethoriker und Hassmagnet ideal ausspielen. Es gab wenige die so heat ziehen konnten. Im Ring lebte er aber in erster Linie von seinem oft übertriebenen, aber urkomischen selling und den Geschichten die er im Match erzählte. Und obwohl er durchaus wrestlen konnte, war das aber eher spartanisch und VOR ALLEM brauchte er für ein annehmbares match einen guten Gegenpart. Später als face ging Lawler mmn garnicht, weil er seine Stärken komplett wegnehmen musste. Leistungen im Ring wie gesagt überschaubar aber konstant. Mich hat er immer gut unterhalten, mehr als 6 Points sind trotzdem nicht drin. :)"

Ich dachte damals, Lawler wäre ein guter Kommentator, aber leider muss ich ein paar Jahre später feststellen, dass er sich nicht verbessert, sondern verschlechtert hat. Viele Versprecher, banales & lustloses Gebrabbel.... das ist seiner nicht würdig. Zumal er als aktiver wirklich gut am Mic war & Heat ziehen konnte. Aber im Team mit Cole (der auch kein guter Play-by-play-Kommentator ist) fällt das noch mehr ins Gewicht. Fazit: als Wrestler top & unterhaltsam, hinterm Pult ein Grund für die Stummtaste!"
[2.0] "Kann nichts über seine aktive Wrestling Karriere sagen, deswegen kommen die Punkte hauptsächlich von der Kommentator Rolle. Mit JR damals ganz klar nen super Duo, auch mit nem Heel-Cole als Partner noch gut. Aber seitdem auch Cole wieder ne Face Rolle übernommen hat ist es einfach unerträglich. Ein andauernder Wettbewerb der beiden wer den Faces tiefer in den Hintern krabbelt, egal was nen Face macht es ist immer das Beste und Tollste. Am schlimmsten diese bescheuerten Lachen bei jeder Rock Promo, wirklich EGAL was der Mann sagt, weil es ja so super "lustig" ist. Steh echt jedes mal kurz davor den Ton abzuschalten, kanns echt nicht mehr ertragen."
[1.0] "Inzwischen finde ich sogar Carsten Schäfer besser als ihn und das will schon was heißen. Im Gegensatz zum King mastubiert Schäfer wenigstens nicht verbal bei jedem Diven-Match und ergreift uneingeschränkt Partei für die Faces. Und er macht auch keinen Wrestler, der ihm nicht in den Kragen passt, im Standing runter. Demzufolge ist Lawler als Kommentator nur noch inkompetent und im Ring sollte er auch nix mehr zu suchen haben. Ich will ihn einfach nicht mehr sehen und nach dem Herzinfarkt hätte er in Rente gehen sollen. Da ist es mir auch einfach schnuppe was er vor gefühlten hundert Jahren mit Kaufmann veranstaltet hat."
[2.0] "Ich hasse Jerry Lawler. Er ist für mich kein "King". Das einzige was er ist, ist ein geiler bock der nur Diven anstarrt wie ein verschwitzter, notgeiler, alter Mann. Kann den nicht mehr sehen. Ein großer Wrestler war er auch nie."
[8.0] "Damals während der (mir persönlich auch viel zu) langwierigen Fehde mit Bret Hart hab ich ihn gehasst. Doch ansonsten war einfach immer mit unendlichem Charisma ausgestattet und ist inzwischen ein großartiger Kommentator/Co-Kommentator, der eigentlich noch heute die WWE mehr prägt, als so mancher aktueller Superstar."

Als Kommentator an der Seite von Jim Ross war er ohnehin über fast jeden Zweifel erhaben und war sowohl in seiner Phase als Heel dem man am liebsten an die Gurgel springen würde während der 90-er, sowie dann als rotziger, aber dennoch sympathischer Tweener ab der Jahrtausendwende absolut überzeugend. So sehr ich ihn das Spotlight gegönnt habe, welches er in der Zeit um Wrestlemania herum für sich beanspruchen durfte, kann mich seine derzeitige Leistung als Kommentator im Moment absolut nicht vom Hocker reißen, eher im Gegenteil. Er kann wahrscheinlich wenig dafür, doch ein Lawler als Color-Kommentator der nicht nur permanent auf seiten der Babyfaces steht und diesen gekonnt Puder in den Allerwertesten schiebt, sondern auch noch die Heels auf absolut plumpe Art und Weise herunterputzt, hat einen extremen Nervfaktor und lässt ihn eher als das Propagandasprachohr der PG-Bewegung, denn wie einen unterhaltsamen oder zumindest kompetenten Color-Kommentator wirken. Am Pult ist der King somit leider nur ein Schatten seiner selbst und mit seiner manipulativen "alles in den Himmel loben, was die WWE als cool, witzig und populär empfindet" kaum noch tragbar."
[10.0] "Der King kriegt die 10. Als Wrestler kenne ich ihn erst seit Mitte der 90er, mag schon immer seinen Old School Stil. Als Color-Kommentator im Duo mit JR außer Konkurrenz und auch jetzt noch gut. Leider fehlen mir heute die lustigen Sprüche wie "Here comes Mankind: He's not very smart but he leads the league in nose hair! ", aber wenn ich ihn nach anderthalb Jahrzehnten immer noch gerne höre, macht der Mann viel richtig."
[9.0] "Ich muss zugeben das ich so gut wie nichts von seinen alten Matches gesehen habe. 2011 ist er mit über 60 Jahren aber so gut wie ein Ric Flair schon lange nicht mehr. Natürlich, der man hat nicht diesen Tourplan mit gemacht wie ihn ein Ric Flair seit nahezu 40 Jahren durchzieht. Aber seine Leistungen gegen The Miz zeigen das er ein sehr guter Wrestler war und für sein Alter immer noch ist. Und als Kommentator ist er ebenfalls einer der Besten. Er hat egal in welcher Funktion die Massen im Griff und kann diese auch begeistern."
[8.0] "Kann ihn als Wrestler kaum bewerten, da ich ihn in seiner Prime nicht miterlebt habe und wenn nur ausschnittsweise mal was gesehen habe. Als Kommentator jedoch finde ich ihn sehr gut. Vorallem im Team mit Jim Ross waren beide einfach auf einem sehr hohen Level. Lawler glänzt auch mit Ausstrahlung, Charisma und überzeugenden Auftreten und ist ein guter Micworker."
[8.0] "Finde ihn stark als Kommentator, alleine damals sein "Latina Heat" ausspruch wenn eddie im ring war oder ne promo gab hängt mir heute noch in den Ohren, als wrestler allerings ist er mir nie wirklich grossartig aufgefallen obwohl er damals ein paar gute fehden hatte als ich die ersten male wrestling geguckt hab."
[6.0] "Ich bewerte nur seine aktuelle Rolle, nicht seine zeit als aktiver Wrestler: Als Kommentator ist er heutzutage nur noch Durchschnitt, mich nerven die Schrillen Ausrüfe die Lawler jedes mal von sich gibt wenn er Woche für Woche etwas "zum ersten Mal" sieht, sein übertriebenes Facecommentating, und sein dummes lachen wenn er einem eine reinhaut und sich damit ins Spotlight stellt. Auch wenn Cole nur seine Heelrolle spielt hat er in vielen Dingen recht, Lawler stiehlt den Jungen Leuten das Spotlight und steht jetzt sogar in einem PPV-Mainevent. Ja er war früher ein toller Heel-Kommentator und in seiner aktiven Zeit auch ein guter Wrestler(was ich selbst nicht bewerten kann) aber heutzutage ist er von Striker und Cole lange überholt worden."
[6.0] "Auch ganz schwer zu beurteilen. Als WWF-Wrestler im altbekannten Großmaul-Cheap-Heat-Heel sicherlich überaus überzeugend und auch im Ring solide bis gut. Als Kommentator hat er aber in meinen Augen in den letzten Jahren abgebaut, man hat sich einfach etwas an ihm "sattgehört"."
[9.0] "Einer der besten Talker des Business, ein schön launiger Kommentator und vor allem ein phänomenaler Old-School-Worker, der auch ohne herausragendes athletisches Können mit einfachen Mitteln alles wichtige aus einem Match herauszuholen wusste. Eine wahre Legende ihrer Zeit, die durch ihr WWE-Engagement zurecht auch einem größeren Publikum in Erinnerung bleibt."
[8.0] "Er ist als Kommentator auch heute kein schlechter. Doch seit der Unterschied zwischen PBPs und Color Kommentatoren eher marginal ausfällt, wurde Lawler um ein wichtiges Markenzeichen, nämlich seine flotten Heel-Sprüche (die immer für einen Lacher gut waren), gebracht. Und das merkt man leider. Nichts desto trotz ist er immer noch einer der besseren Kommentatoren und mit Blick auf seine aktive Karriere und auf seine einstigen Glanzleistungen als Color Kommentator der alten Schule gebe ich ihm immer noch 8 Punkte. EDIT: Sticht als Kommentator zwar immer noch hervor - aber das ist in der WWE momentan auch keine Kunst."

[10.0] "Legende: Unzählige Titel und ein Kommentator, der mich jedesmal begeistert. Auch wenn er nicht immer bei der Sache ist und oft viele Scherze macht, wäre Raw ohne Lawler, zumindest für mich, undenkbar."
[8.0] "Lawler ist schon ein Phänomen. Er hat viel fürs Wrestling getan, was ihm hoch angerechnet werden sollte. Im Ring war er sicherlich kein atemberaubender Athlet, allerdings wusste er vorallem durch Psychologie zu punkten. Sein Run in der WWE war schon erfolgreich, da er sich die größte Zeit mit dem Hitman herumärgerte, was zu einer der erfolgreichsten Fehden der frühen 90er wurde. Als Kommentator in der Anfangszeit brilliant. Er war als Heel unglaublich stark, baute mit der Zeit jedoch mehr und mehr ab. Heutzutage nur noch ein Schatten seiner selbst, was jedoch auf seinem Legendenstatus beruht. Da er mir dennoch nicht mehr gefällt, gibt es Abzüge."
[9.0] "Wirklich der King unter den Kommentatoren - habe mir schlechte Shows oft nur wegen seinen Sprüchen angesehen oder sogar nur über die Stereoanlage laufen lassen. Hat natürlich auch legendäre Kämpfe bestritten - wohl aber für den Main-Stream-Fan kein Hulk-Hogan-Potential, da man ihm eine gewisse Trainingsfäule ansieht... ;)"
[8.0] "Früher hätte ich gesagt: Der beste Kommentator bei der WWE. Foley gefällt mir allerdings noch nen Tick besser ;) Lawlers Sprüche sind einfach zum wegschmeissen. Oder zumindest: Sie waren es. Er hat mir in der Rolle des ewigen Die-Hard-Heel-Supporter/Wendehals besser gefallen. Trotzdem auch heute noch einer der besten seiner Zunft. Auch wenn seine Piepsstimme manchmal etwas enerviert. Sein Wrestling kann ich nicht bewerten, da ich davon kaum was mitbekommen habe."

Abgesehen von seiner Karriere als Kommentator kann Jerry Lawler auf eine sehr erfolgreiche Karriere als Wrestler zurückblicken, zumindest in Memphis, was bedeutsamer ist, als sich einige Fans wahrscheinlich vorstellen vermögen."

Als Heel Kommentator in früheren Jahren durchaus gut, heutzutage eher "Neben-Kommentator". Als Heel Wrestler durchaus auch für einige gute Momente verantwortlich. Auch wenn ich das Duo Ross-Lawler sehr mag, denke ich dass es bessere Kommentatoren-Teams geben könnte. (Jim Ross sollte aber in jedem fall natürlich bleiben)"

Schade, dass von seinem Kommentaren immer viel in den deutschen Sendungen verloren gingen."

Gut dank gewisser Macht hat er 20. 000 Titel geholt aber das wertet nur ein wenig ab. Macht man in der WWE ja genauso. Ihm fehlte aber der große WWE/NWA Titel. Als Kommentator ist er eigentlich immer noch ganz solide auch wenn er jetzt viel zu lange mit Ross kommentiert. Vielleicht täte ihm ein Roster Wechsel gut."
